All you can eat sushi :D
Sam Y.

Ordered: A few Kirin Beers, and TASTING MENU (Ie All you can eat rolls) Price: £12 beers, £16.50 tasting menu! Review: Wow - came here with a friend. Must admit it is a tad far for those that don't work or don't live nearby. BUT, it is all you can eat sushi+7 hot dishes (no AYCE on the hot foods). The fish isn't the best in the world - obviously, BUT it is a good laugh being in the middle of nowhere, and eating a ridiculous amount of sushi!! I will be definitely coming back for more sushi!!!! I liked their spicy rolls quite a bit - spicy tuna, spicy salmon! On top of that....the tasty avocado, salmon, mayo combo. Can't ask for more! Cheap, Fun, and Quiet! Come here early if you are going to go out afterwards because it is a little far away!

The other 1/2 of our Tasting Menu selection for three.

Wow, this was a tough one for me! There is a big part of me that wants to go four stars, but as with everything I think this one is down to expectations. Above said, I wager I will be back here several times as long at they maintain the tasting menu... it's an INSANE value at twelve items for under £17 with as much sushi as you can eat in an hour and a half; even if everything on it doesn't come across five star you just can't fault it at the price... it literally borders on the ridiculous and twice three of us have failed to finish the initial offering much less order more sushi. Before they introduced the tasting menu I've actually eaten here a few times as well as had their delivery... I have to say that it's never bad, but mostly didn't blow me away. (So far the Buta Kimchi has been my favourite with an honourable mention to the Jap Chae.) The Bulgogi, a staple of mine when available, is where I felt a bit let down to be honest. The Galbi fared a bit better however. For me this place isn't that far away so coupled with the tasting menu (I'm a sucker for choice) I can see myself back here often when in town looking for variety and value... I would be back regardless, but perhaps not as frequently versus my usual, but less convenient, Korean haunt on Poland Street. No complaints for the place itself or staff... it's rather large, clean, and the staff always seem friendly. As others have mentioned this place is definitely a bit hidden, but worth seeking out if you happen to be in the area and it sounds interesting to you... I especially appreciate their later dining hours happily allowing you to order and actually dine in at 10pm.

Opens late. 10.30pm

Food was very good, but service was terrible. We had our starter, banchan and main courses on the table before we got our drinks.

Best takeaway Sushi ever! Finally found some good Japanese food near me. Though they are Korean the Sushi is excellent.

Unfortunately, before I can get to the actual review of the food, I have to point out that it took about an hour for us to receive anything, and it was clear the kitchen had forgotten our order. That's not a critical failure in my mind, as long as it's properly addressed. However, while the food eventually came after we flagged down multiple waiters, there was never an apology or acknowledgement that they had forgotten. Disappointing. However, the food itself was good. The Udon soup with tempura was tasty, and the tempura was an interesting selection, all perfectly fried. The salmon and avocado hand roll was also tasty, and the fish tasted fresh. The tomago roll was also yummy. The decor is very sleek, with black and blue tones throughout. The restaurant was completely full when we were there on a Saturday night, so you may want to make a reservation. Overall, a decent choice for Japanese in Deptford, and right by the DLR. However, don't be surprised to wait a while for your food.

The service was mediocre; staff were not very attentive. I had chirashi don which had very little fish and toppings compared to what I've had in other Japanese restaurants and also in Japan. A lot of the appetizers were out of stock despite it being a quiet Monday evening with hardly any other customers. Overall inefficient service and poor quality food for a Japanese restaurant.

The first course was some spinach leaves in a sweet sauce and it was actually better than expected. It then came with 3 pieces of sashimi which I could tell were very fresh and melted in my mouth. There was also a tiny container of tuna tartare. Lastly, for my choice of protein, I went with the black cod, which was a nice soft consistency and cooked well. The sauce on the side also added some nice sweet flavor to complement the fish. While the food was good, I do feel that 48 GBP is slightly on the high side considering the small portion sizes. The interior of the restaurant has some elegant and classy decor. That's probably why so many people come for business lunches here (plus the location). The staff are average friendliness, although the service speed was kind of slow. It was also weird that they for some reason couldn't find our reservation in their system but we were still able to get a table nonetheless. Overall, I think ROKA is a very choice choice if you are looking for a fancier Japanese meal than your typical sushi restaurant.

Roka is basically a typical faux luxury establishment of the type that has been popularized over the years in areas of low culture and/or regions where a particular cusine doesn't really exist. You know the type: pictures of beautiful people and food, tasteful font for the establishment, and a quick look at the about section of the restaurant reveals it's place as part of group founded by a bunch of executives; it's not so much a restaurant as it is an exercise in corporate branding. When you visit, you'll notice that the clientel reflects that branding design as well. Everyone here looks like they're part of a vertical strategy that includes the workers at the firm itself, the final spot on a flow chart diagram where the staff themsleves are the primary customer for the product and then a line arches back to the beginning of the flow to further inform strategic planning for more pan something restaurants. The name of this group could be called Ouroboros but that might be a little on the nose. Most izakayas on Planet Earth have better food that what you'll get here and for far less money. This said, you won't get to enjoy a space filled with the finance crowd who are all tastefully lit to ensure their Instagram selfies look good enough for them to tag themselves with the establishment. Service is slow and aloof. Skip it.

You know going in here that the quality probably isn't going to be good. Straight away it violates two rules of good dining: 1) Pan anything is usually pretty poor, 2) A huge menu that doesn't make any choices is probably going to suffer. We ordered one of the set menus. As far as I could tell, this place dedicated to "sticks" and "sushi" had no "tuna" or "negima" on the menu at all which is pretty weird to start but we definitely tried to find them. Instead, salmon seemed to be the fish of choice and all of the ala carte skewers were at exorbitant prices; note that a much more delicious yakitori anything in Japan costs about 100-200 yen, not 1500 yen, but ok. Instead of beloved tuna we received red pepper nigiri as part of our set menu - what? There was a chicken roll that was kind of like a grilled chicken salad in rice paper that was OK. Etc. The quality of the fish in the nigiri wasn't bad but they have no idea how to make sushi rice here so I would avoid nigiri all together and just stick to sashimi if you're going to order from the sushi side of the menu. Oh and my 350ml bottle of junmai cost 49£, which was pretty typical for the sake prices here. So yeah, if you're visiting from the States set your sights on "Suburb Mall Court Fusion" with a bill around 200 bucks and you'll have an idea of what you're in for. Avoid it.

The tonkotsu pork broth was very creamy, rich, and well-seasoned, and the firm noodles offered a very good taste as I ate them together with all the ingredients. The "water" taste was relatively minimal. The pork belly was a bit overcooked and falling apart, by which time I realized there was a bit less meat than I had anticipated but more of the fatty skin part. I just think the broth was a big plus and could make me comfortably say that the ramen I had was great. I know making the tare and the broth takes a long time so while I am not sure Ippudo is exactly following that process, I do see efforts in trying. Both the chicken kara-age and the takoyaki tasted like what they were supposed to taste like, with the oroshi ponzu sauce providing the chicken with a bit of new flavor on top of the already flavorful chicken. The chicken was juicy, too! Juice was flowing out of the breading as I took a bite. The takoyaki had the standard amount of octopus, which was a tiny bit. The matcha brownie was not bad, but lacked matcha flavor and was a bit too hard. It took me a bit to cut it open with my fork which I normally wouldn't be expecting from brownies. Based on the fact that it was cold, I thought it might have been frozen previously. It was well-decorated, but the fact that it was frozen most likely affected how hard it was, along with how less tasteful it was. It was still sweet, but like I mentioned previously, lacked matcha flavor. Another thing I noticed was that the service was slow. It took us a while to get out food. And despite me saying to bring the dessert along with everything else, they still brought out the dessert towards the very end and when we inquired about it, said that they were waiting on us to ask to bring the dessert. Just want to bring it up as a miscommunication instance, but totally not a big deal and it didn't impact my experience negatively at all.
