As we look for places to eat amongst coworkers, we decided to go to a Japanese place. Not being familiar with places to eat here in London, I looked to Yelp, and of course someone from our hotel recommended this place too. So I can say it wasn't bad at all, but it wasn't the beat Sushi I have had. I would go back for sure as the service was good, minus my coworkers chicken dish took forever to come out, as we kept having to check on it. The Uni was definitely not a bad batch as it had a sweetness and creamy texture that I would expect. Amaebi was not the larger shrimp with the fried heads, so not what I was expecting. As for the Natto Rolls, I could tell you that our young waitress made a surprising face, which made me laugh, as I could tell she was from Japan, as I was told not many Japanese even eat Natto. As another reviewer says, this is an undiscovered gem! Hidden away inside an arcade, it was filled on a weekday evening with mostly Japanese patrons. Plenty of wait staff who were quite attentive, including some who were preparing table side shabu shabu (cooking thinly sliced meat and veggies in a broth). They have a huge menu with an unusually wide selection of small dishes as well as the usual entrees. I ordered their ten piece nigiri (17 GBP), grilled miso black cod (12 GBP), and salmon belly age dashi (cooked lightly in a daikon soy based sauce) (7 GBP). All were excellent including with fresh not powdered wasabi root. Super affordable, high quality with great service -- what's not to like! read more

A little bit pricey, but good nonetheless! I got the japanese curry chicken katsu - definitely tastes like authentic japanese curry and not chinese/indian curry. The portions are quite generous as I felt like I was growing a food baby after the meal. Good place for a decent price - especially given the limited options around the Maryleborne area! Make sure to bring your student card - 10% discount! Would recommend coming here if you are craving japanese curry :) read more

Very authentic Japanese food at a pretty good price, especially from their lunch special! Highly recommend their udon - great broth and so many sides! Eel here is also fantastic! Worth looking for! Hidden inside an arcade, this is a lovely little place. Not fancy, but our sushi and chicken katsu curry were very good. Starting to get crowded with Japanese businessmen, but never loud. We saw some truly huge hot pots going by and were jelaous. I wish we had the vacation time to eat here again! read more

Finding good sushi in London is like waking up to sunny days. You know it's possible, but no one is putting their money on it. That said, Nambu Tei is not only good sushi, it is arguably some of the best prepared seafood I've had within the confines of London. Having noted Nambu Tei and its menu one time when wandering around for a good lunch spot around Baker Street station, I returned the other night with a couple friends. I am embarrassed that I didn't realize how comprehensive the menu really is. Try the grilled squid with ginger, it's utterly fantastic (we ordered a second, just to make sure). The Sake-cha and seaweed salad were also great. All of the rolls we had were amazingly good, so it might be a matter of trying to find something bad on the menu, which might be hard as the menu is quite long. My only worry is that I will never try another place again and only return to Nambu Tei from here on in. But that's a good worry to have. read more

The food here is actually quite good. I have been here a few times and had tendon, all various lunch boxes with unagi, beef teriyaki, tempura, sushi, and sashimi. The servers are also very polite and attentive. The chef is Japanese along with the rest of the staff, so this place is authentic. Their katsu curry is also amazing large for lunch, a great value! The reason I gave it a 3 is due to hygiene. When I was sitting at the counter a few times, the chef keeps sneezing, which of course makes the customers uncomfortable since he is making sushi/sashimi while doing that. I would just ask the chef to refrain or go to the restroom to take care business first and then return. read more

This little gem was reccomended by the girls at the beatles store. Service was impeccable, food hot and fresh, as well as delicious. Sushi was also spot on and the only down side was not enough green tea. Sushi has got to be one of my favorite foods, and I've eaten a lot of it over the years in places known for fresh fish (read: the West Coast). London isn't exactly a Mecca for sashimi or nigiri, and as much as places like Itsu and others are fast and cheap, they lack freshness and creativity. Enter Nambu Tei, or rather you're going to have to find it first. Tucked away in the corner of a strip mall off Baker Street, it's easy to miss but worth the hunt. The sashimi is fresh with nicely cut pieces, and I love the spicy fatty tuna roll. I usually only do take-out, and they always offer green tea while I wait. While not particularly cheap, it's probably the closest I've come to quality sushi in London. read more

So glad I've found this place for my regular dosage of Japanese comfort food. Don't be spooked out by the empty hallway leading to the place, the food is worth it and the restaurant t is really quite cozy. They have a big selection on the menu and I tend to go for the Nabeyaki Udon when I feel like something delicious in a soup. While sometimes it's hard to find well-cooked Nabeyaki Udon soup (how can people get it wrong so easily?), this place has nailed it! The few other dishes I've tried are very good as well. Lunch boxes that are heaven, great variety of foods! The place is slightly hidden in the mini baker street arcade next to Pret, but Nambu-tei delivers you that real Japanese cuisine. I think I need to reset my sushi expectations now that I'm not in California or maybe they were just having an off day :/ Came for lunch for a bit of treatyoself and had the sashimi bento which was just sort of meh for £16.50. The fish was fresh but very little of it, the tempura doughy, the salad was sad and under-dressed, and it came with some sort of lukewarm pork nugget things that I didn't really understand. Everyone was very friendly and efficient though, and all the other reviews are so good that I may try it again if in the area. Definitely a disappointment though. read more

Nambutei is my favourite Japanese Restaurant around the Baker St area. It's a small restaurant that is reminiscent of the 1980's - with sit-down black laquer furniture and ... green carpet... but the atmosphere is professional and it's quiet. The food is awesome. If you're after anything that truly represents Japanese - go for this! My favourite dish is the Nabu-Udon which is delicious. If you're hungry go for the Chicken Katsu Curry Set which is available for under 10 quid at lunch times. The sushi and sashimi is exquisite here too. Highly recommended for a taste of traditional Japanese food and some great impeccable service. read more

Possibly the best sushi I have had in London, and the first 5 stars I award. This place is BUTT-UGLY and a bit hard to find, and frankly when you enter you think you're gonna get salmonella just by breathing, but the sushi... oh friends, their sushi is spectacular. Their menu is incredibly vast and reasonably priced and in London, that is so hard to find. Their fish was crazy fresh, the cuts are large and even the more 'special' things like fatty tuna or sea urchin were top standard. It was one of those evenings where one feels as alone in a way one might not anticipate, and in need of a bit of supplement and warmth as it were. Nambu-tei is situated in a simple suburban arcade just opposite one of the Baker Street tube exits. On entry, there is often the cheery welcome from one or more sushi chefs from behind the counter to remind you especially that if dining solo, perching yourself at the sushi bar and having the occasional chat with the chefs as they expeditiously deliver those artworks of sushi, is an alternative. I chose this time to sit at one of the regular tables and ordered one of my usuals ie the tempura soba, which they do simply but exquisitely, as well as a fatty tuna sushi roll. Overall and as expected, both were done well and to my mind, perfection. Their tempura is always prepared just right (so that the batter is light enough, which is not always the case in many other establishments) and the sushi fresh and succulent. I sometimes order the yellow tail which is also very good here. All is served with care and ultimate Japanese courtesy, and though not all the staff have very good English, they do make up for this better than most other non fluent non Brits would do. They also have a newer staff member who speaks perfect English and who on asking revealed that though Japanese by birth, had grown up in UK. The restaurant is actually much bigger than it first appears with a generously sized private dining room near the sushi bar and infact a few more combined with Karaoke and other facilities downstairs. For me, Nambu-tei is almost always a reliable warmer, both of stomach, heart and even ones spirit. read more

High Japanese style chairs. We went for the sashimi 30 pound special which was good value for the money. Nice large pieces of salmon though not the best I have had. The scallops were lovely. Some other interesting fish to choose from. The price was very reasonable especially as my friends have some expensive tastes. It was a bit of a shame about the ambience of the room. It felt a little dingy and I can see the private rroms off to the side appeared to have more going for them. My friends loved it, I thought it was pretty ok. Mercifully undiscovered, Nambu-Tei is hidden from view in an anonymous arcade opposite the side entrance to Baker Street tube. Though I don't come back for the decor (white walls and high-backed black chairs), the reasonably-priced dishes and friendly attentive service never disappoint. That we're often sharing the stark dining room with a large proportion of Japanese locals speaks volumes for the authenticity and quality of the food. The menu is vast, with enough to explore for the expert (which I confess I'm not), and recognisable mixed sushi and sashimi platters, set-dinners and combinations for the uninitiated. If like me you have a preference for or against particular fish/shellfish they will usually try to accommodate this in the set dishes. The sushi and sashimi are of a high standard (with none of the experimental rolls found in its more pretentious and expensive rivals) , though it pays to sit at the sushi bar if you wish to ask the quietly spoken sushi chef (the same for the past decade, and very likely the owner) what he recommends on any given day. My suggestion for a first visit: try the Nasu-Agedashi deep fried aubergine to start, followed by the sushi/sashimi combined platter. Their warm sake is good, but a more adventurous stab-in-the-dark from their extensive chilled sake selection can be better. If it's Nobu or Sumosan style and exclusivity you're after, you won't find them here, just very good Japanese food with polite service and sensible prices - which in Marylebone are hard to come by. read more

Really loved the eal sushi very fresh and tasty. Udon noodles also great, I got the one in pot. My friend ordered the tempera udon. Both are good. Seaweed salad is a bit weird different from other places. Recommend and will go again! read more

Came here totally by chance, to meet friends for dinner and this was the closest option. Looked more like a Japanese place in one of the underground stations in Tokyo. The staff and clients all Japanese. It has got to be the cheapest sit down Japanese in London and given its location, super surprised. The food was good too, I liked the sashimi, rolls of which we ordered at least five different types, excellent gyoza, agadashi tofu. Didn't care much for the aubergine with miso, too sweet for my taste, but everyone else liked it, chicken karage their version, again not great. Had some scoops of green tea ice cream and got free tea. Ordered a bottle of house wine, our bill came to 100 quid between four of us without service. Definitely going back. read more
