The best thing about Egger's Ice Cream Parlor on Forest Avenue is its historic presence at that…read morelocation for over 90 years (1932). It is surely a community fixture with generations of families stopping by to celebrate the best things in their lives with homemade ice cream and an assortment of candy in dozens of glass jars along one wall. I admit to stopping in after an epic brunch at a nearby Greek diner, and to being too stuffed to dive into their flavors of the week 'screams. My friend was not as disciplined as I, so she ordered a cup of some chocolate peanut butter which she kvelled over. Apparently, they also had an orange long stringy confection that she wanted for later indulgence. All very cool, but she isn't diabetic. The ambiance of Egger's is definitely mid-twentieth century, and could use a fresh coat of paint to brighten the joint up a bit. Maybe better lighting, too. Otherwise, growing up in the City (Washington Heights) in the same era, this malt shop/candy emporium with long counter and spinners brought fond memories of my childhood flooding back. That, my friends, is always a very good moment. Four Sugary Super Sundae Stars. Those were the days!

Stopped in for a summer treat after a long day out hoping they wouldn't be too busy and I'm so…read morehappy we did. Egger's is a classic with a good variety and selection of flavors. They have the classic ice cream diner experience with candy, sweet treats, and counter with bar stools. It's well worth the price and the flavors are exceptionally tasty!

This is the second in a series of Staten Island reviews I'll be doing, based on my "Staten Island…read moreAdventure" with Jill R. and Rebecca G. Funny enough, I did not start with the first place that Jill R. and I went to the minute we got off the Staten Island Railway. Have you ever taken that thing? It's a trip. I'm pretty sure two homeless kids with bikes were trying to make fun of me. Anyway, it took about 20 minutes for the thing to get going, Jill and I had worked ALL DAY, and then taken a BOAT to sit and listen to these homeless kids with disproportionate ages (one of them was clearly a grown man actually) say really ignorant thing and have their nips keep slipping. Yeah... they were wearing tank tops in September. My point is: I needed ice cream. I said as much at one point at the ferry terminal, 'cause they have some sort of substandard ice cream you can buy at the ferry (sorry ferry ice cream stand). This place was like a majestic beacon the minute you get off the great kills stop. When we in, NO ONE WAS INSIDE. I was going to get something more classic, like a waffle cone or some such, but my instincts asked if she could make a milkshake in any of the flavors available. Could she? Oh, she could. I had a cookies and cream milkshake. It was fantastic. I did suck it down way too fast, and essentially had a dairy hangover for the next 6 hours, but this was aided by not eating anything all day. The lady talked to us for a bit, too. They had games for kids inside. Some sort of rewards program I could not properly sign up for. There's a big ceramic ice cream thing in the window. Good place to bring kids to, I would say. IP.S. Joe G. and I were talking down 2nd Ave later the next week, and I saw a stand outside a pizza place for the SAME EXACT ICE CREAM. I'm like I JUST went to this place on Staten Island. Then the guy behind the counter yelled, "Hey! That's where I'm from!" I'm glad I waited to write this so I could tell you that part. It was the best part of the whole thing.

Very poor experience. The service was terrible from start to finish. I'm genuinely surprised…read morethey're still in business given the level of customer service they provide. Andrew
