Visiting a new yoga studio as a drop-in guest is always an unexpected adventure. But here, in the Mueller Tower district of East Austin, that is especially the case, both for what is happening inside the studio and out. Outside, a new neighborhood is emerging from the ground at a starling pace from the remains of the old Austin Municipal airport, which has since relocated to the former Bergstrom Air Force base SE of the city. Regardless of your views on urban redevelopment, this area is amazing to witness: rows and rows of new model homes and apartments, parks and open spaces designed to protect native Texan prairie habit, and new shops and retail providing to the influx of new residents. This is one of the most elaborate PUDs (Planned Urban Developments) I have ever experienced. I was left dazed, confused, and slightly disoriented - and that was even before the intense yoga session that was to come! All that remains of the old airport is the historic control tower, which you can use as a handy orientation point to locate the Bikram studio itself, which is housed on the ground floor of an attractive apartment complex about a block away from the tower. Nearby is a nice park for walking and jogging, and there is plenty of free street parking next to the studio for dozens of cars. While primarily a spot for practicing classical 90-minute Bikram hot yoga, the ueber-talented teachers here are totally committed yoga nerds who also experiment widely with Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and Rocket yoga sequences. In addition, they host numerous visiting instructors, many of whom are award-winning yogins with decades of prior experience, to run day-long workshops and other special events, like Bikram yoga in Spanish and progressive variations on the conventional 26 postures + 2 breathing exercises. In short, there is a lot of interesting, challenging, and fun stuff happening here, and you'll want to check it out if you're in town and love a good yoga workout. I somewhat foolishly dropped in on a day that a special teacher was offering a 2-hour long Rocket 3 class. The only other students attending were themselves all yoga teachers in their own rights, so I was clearly the oddball in the bunch, but fortunately, it didn't really matter. I followed as best as I could and backed away wisely from the most difficult postures. Still, it was horizon-widening and exhaustively enjoyable in a way that all good yoga practices are, and the instructor, Gil, was super patient and inclusive in his instruction. I came away with huge respect for the class and the studio and learned a few new things to take with me when I returned home to my normal Bikram studio. Had it not been for Bikram Yoga East Austin, I never in a million years would have ventured this far into the exurban wilderness. And that would have been a real loss, because yoga, like life, is about mindful awareness of the world around you - not the world you imagine, but the world as it exists in dynamic realtime. Thanks to the staff and student-teachers here for making me feel welcome on my first visit!

Great environment for reflection and meditation. Recommend the Bik 60 classes- especially the silent. Don't miss out on this transformation.

A rare find: a clean, well managed hot studio -- with parking and a nice staff.

This particular location of Black Swan is tucked away from the main road. It's one large room vs studios with multiple rooms. It has mirrors everywhere so you can check and correct your posture easily, as well as rubber flooring that makes balancing better / easier on your joints. They have plenty of props and the room being wide allows everyone to have a good view of the instructor as well as hear well.

Generally I love Black Swan! I've been going to their Flow classes for years. Here's the thing:…read moreBlack Swan lists a bunch of their classes just as "Flow" but each one is led by a different teacher with a different style and different definition of "all-level." Your experience will vary based on the teacher and time of day. 5:30pm - you're gonna get a sweaty, packed room and hardcore workout. 8:30pm - you're gonna get a chill vibe more focused on stretching and winding down for the day. I'm glad they offer both, but it's hard to know what you're gonna get when you book. I literally started keeping a list of teacher's names to note if I liked their style or not ‍ Parking sucks at Orchard (& Cesar Chavez). Get there early to find a spot. Also, they also don't clearly advertise that the rooms are heated. Trust me - bring a sweat towel!
