I know this will sound weird to most people, but my first ever visit to Yo Sushi was unlike any other eating experience I've had before. To be fair, I HAVE been living under a rock for the past few years (Gibraltar), so to be presented with a restaurant where the food revolves on a conveyor belt and allows you to grab whichever portion of sushi takes your fancy, without having to leave your seat, was quite frankly, OUT OF THIS WORLD - like some kind of funky, futuristic buffet, where little spaceship-style domes of mouth-watering Japanese food come hovering past your table!
Each 'spaceship' (bowl) on the conveyor belt comes in a particluar colour, with each colour representing a set price. For example, the green bowls are the cheapest at £1.90 each and the grey bowls are the most expensive, at £5 each. At the end of the meal, the waiter adds up all the coloured bowls and lets you know the total. Genius! There is also a menu from which you can order drinks and an appetising array of hot dishes, salads and desserts.
Once I'd got my uncultured little head around the concept of the restaurant, I enjoyed all sorts of delicious Japanese delights (sushimi, maki, nigiri etc), straight off the conveyor.
The staff were incredibly friendly, which is just as well because I needed an explanation as to how it all worked. I was also informed that they offer sushi making classes (£30 per person or £50 for two and can accomodate up to 15 people in the restaurant) which includes lunch, a rolling mat, booklet and certificate. I feel some birthday present hints about to drop!
I love the fact that there were no knives and forks on standby, so those who aren't good with chopsticks have no choice but get their fingers out, literally! All in all, this was a fantastic, if slightly alien, way to dine out. Good food, great staff and an awesome concept. Yo Sushi is the future! I will definitely be back for more! read more
