Following a boozy day in Manchester we decided to pop to Wasabi in China Town for some quick sushi for dinner. For a Saturday evening it was rather busy, so we waited around 15 minutes for two seats at the belt. Once seated we opted for the set menus - I ordered set menu B at £8.95 giving me 3 grey plates of sushi off the belt and 1 hot noodle or rice dish cooked from the kitchen. Neil C. ordered the Wasabi set menu at £17.95 with 10 grey plates off the belt and 1 hot noodle or rice dish. He didn't eat them all, don't worry, we split the 13 plates between us and it was plenty for the 2 of us as well as a main meal each. The service in here is great. Anything you don't see on the belt you can order fresh from the kitchen at no extra cost. For a quick lunch or dinner to satisfy a sushi crave, I would always recommend wasabi.

    The sushi belt.

I would say Wasabi serves its purpose! Ouch, a little harsh okay. It's good sushi, and they know what they're doing. It's perfect for a quick lunch between meetings, and they have good offers on (6 sushi dishes + miso soup for £8.95) but a little on the pricey side. I think they'd get more people through the doors if they had cheaper lunchtime deals on, something for on the go commuters who just need to grab a bite. However, it's clean, staff are friendly and it's easy to park! So I wouldn't say I was disappointed, just a little... meh! I'm sure there's better sushi in Manchester, but it's good for a quick meal. I wouldn't take out-of-towners here.

All sushis off the belt are 1 pound from 12 to 3 pm. Absolute bargain

I entered Wasabi to find a packed room with a mono colored conveyor belt. That sublime, wonderful, divine white colored plate meant that the sushi it contained was one pound. ONE POUND. At this price you obviously can't expect the best sushi of your life but you know what, it was not bad. I've had much worse in certain branches of yo sushi, and for a lot more money. For this particular lunch deal, you won't find anything high profile such as sashimi or hand rolls, but I had some lovely california rolls, along with spicy salmon nigiri, edamame and avocado maki. Total bill came up to 7 pounds, and I had a feast. Good to know though, they only accept credit cards for a minimum of 8 pounds, or you need to pay an extra 50 p. My belly made the maths before my head did: "I either pay 7,50 pounds, or I can get an extra plate and bring the bill to 8 pounds and problem solved..." Nom nom nom. I didn't have time (or space left) to try their desert upstairs but I would go back just for a taste of their green tea waffles.

I've been here twice lately and that's saying a lot because I hardy ever visit the same place twice in such a short space of time. First I went for an evening meal and enjoyed Set Menu B, which includes three plates of sushi and a main meal, all for less than £9! Secondly I went for weekend lunch at the bargain price of £5.50 for a bowl of miso soup and three plates of sushi. The setup is very similar to Yo Sushi with the sushi coming around on the conveyor belt and there being different coloured plates at different prices. There's a list of the dishes so you know what you're picking and the dishes tend to come round in the order they're listed to make life even easier. Cheaper and way better than Yo Sushi!

The sets here with out the cheapist

Well not the best sushi that you will every have, wasabi is one off the cheapist. Great when I'm broke and in need of a sushi fix - I can grab some plats and a main for under a tenner. I do find that this place is a great stepping stone into bigger and better sushi places, know I need to grab me a plane ticket.

Think this is a Cucumber hoso maki – no fish yet, we might as well have stayed on shore

You may have noticed, things have changed with the El Food Brothers. This review features no mention of beer, El Food One had a water and El Food Two something that looked like a Lemsip. Theres no meaty burgers, carb-loaded Pie and Mash or infinite amounts of chicken wings. Whats left? Fish. The final frontier. El Food Two suggests we give Sushi a go. We've heard the word before, and have the laymans view of it. It's all raw fish isn't it? A quick google confirms our suspicions, but Sushi doesn't have to be raw fish at all. In fact a lot of it is just rice and veg, which doesn't make us any more comfortable. It takes us until Friday to pluck up the courage to hit the fish (slap the bass?). Deciding on the classic 'Generation Game' style of Sushi, as we've got no chance if presented with a menu to choose from. Wasabi is the destination for our lunch time fishing trip. We are immediately out of our comfort zone as we pass over the Northern Quarter border to 'the-rest-of-Manchester' and immediately loose 300 cool points. But we have a lot of cool points to play with, so we keep like 'Snoopy in Shades' as we try and navigate to the Printworks. Heading randomly down streets, we chose a left, as I ask the question is this where the Printworks is, El Food Two is pointing at the, frankly ludicrously large sinage hanging proudly on the wall. Its safe to say our boat has sailed true and the shore is in site. Wasabi is equally well signposted, with its neon sign our lighthouse in the dark of the Printworks. I can tell El Food Two is still not sure on this, as he makes me put my foot on the shores of Wasabi first. Its cosy in here, just enough room to swing a lucky cat, or the Sushi belt and the seats around it. We are quickly shown to our seat, nestled between fellow sailors who must be the rank of Admiral or at least Captain, compared to our First-mate and Cabin Boy status. Theres some rough seas following the smooth sailing from our mooring, and a touch of sea sickness as we suddenly realise we are far from the shore, and neither of us even know which way Port and Starboard are. The seas calm as a member of the crew comes to speak with us. I take the 'own-up-to-not-having-even-learnt-to-swim' tactic and we get thrown a much needed life raft, as we get the Idiots Guide to Sushi. Pick what you want off the belt. Theres a big picture up of what everything is, and the colour coding tells you how much it costs. Oh, and its £1 for the Grey ones at lunch time. Winner, we'll stick to the greys and we can't go wrong. Lets do this. Grab us those pots off the side. "Whats that pink stuff? Thats not Wasabi" says El Food Two. Pickled Ginger I reply (I've done Sushi once before, it wasn't very good and very expensive. It was a chain I shall not mention, as I think we've got one too many pending law suits. It rhymes with Mo Pushi) Another pot is grabbed, full of the green stuff. "You know its just horseradish dyed green" I pipe up, in a classic attempt of wanting to seem like I know what I'm doing. No one is impressed. Ok, we can do this, we've got the ship the right way up and heading in what we think is the right direction, but we still can't tell you which way is Starboard. Ride on the the São Food Brothers as I take you on our high seas adventure, picture by picture. (You'll have to cross reference with the pictures on Yelp) Think this is a Cucumber hoso maki - no fish yet, we might as well have stayed on shore Katsu Fish Cake - No we are talking. But Katsu, thats basically Birdseye territory, and a fish cake? We could have stayed on shore and gone the chippy Breaded Crab Claw - Now we are talking, this is proper sea food. Look at its little claw! But wait, breaded? Thats definitely Birdseye, and once you get over the claw, it was like a fish finger lolly. If the stick used to be attached to creature of the sea Crab stick hoso maki (again I think) As if the crab hadn't had a hard enough time having its claw deep fried, I've come back to eat its stick. Spicy tuna gunkan. I didn't try this one, but I got a good bit of it up my nose. Being fish keepers, we both agreed this smelt exactly like an aquarium. It was definitely worth casting off for this one That concludes our sail of the seven (five then) seas. We had an Katsu egg as well, but failed to get a picture of that. You think you've seen all the ways of cooking eggs, but then something like this surprises you. I shall insist on having all my eggs katsu-ed from now on. We head to the till to pay, only a fiver for me as I am exclusively drinking water. I'm more than happy with the food and experience for that money, and El Food Two even said he might come again. Maybe next time we'll have learnt our Starboard from our Port. Our Hoso Maki's from our Gunkan. Or maybe at least we'll have learnt how to swim. 7 Kastu Eggs out of 10 Katsu Chickens

Is it just a bit of fun or a disturbing sign of the times that we would rather get served raw fish from a conveyor belt than get served cooked food by an actual human being- you remember those don't you? To be fair, the sushi here is fantastic (if a little overpriced). Be warned however the dishes are small so Wasabi is definitely not a place for the famished. Years ago an evening in a sushi restaurant would have meant a few hours listening to some overpaid new media wankers on the next table harp on about someone called Rosario who they'd commissioned to create an art installment out of collected cow farts in some kind of statement about greenhouse gasses. Thankfully sushi is a lot more mainstream these days.... so you can now expect the same wankers to be talking about Dave in IT.

The problem with this place is its lack of variety. There are only a handful of dishes that go around the conveyor belt. The seating area is only small (around 30 people) so this place can not handle lots of large groups. On the upside 12pm to 3pm Monday to Friday you can get all sushi for a £1 a plate- I know its crazy talk hey but true. Great service and great staff but overall not the best sushi restaurant I have been too.

    Yumm prawn sushi!!!

I am not the biggest fan of conveyor belts or for that matter super crowded restaurants but the delicious food in Wasabi makes up for everything! When I think of sushi i cant really think beyond Wasabi because you can never go wrong with their deals. My favorite deal is the 8.50 one, where you get 3 plates of Sushi along with any main dish (Fills me up every time). They have a wide range of Sushi, prawns, salmon, eel, chicken, vegetarian and many more. Definitely try their miso soup and Laksa curry, because they are absolutely delicious! I would say its best to avoid peak times like evening 5-7 or weekend lunch times because then you wont have a good experience and might just get pissed off. I would recommend going there for a late night dinner when its quiet and you don't have to wait for an hour to be seated and then compete with the others to snatch your favorite plate from the belt. Verdict: Great food, value for money but not the best place to sit and dine! If you are a foodie like me you might become a regular here!

Anyway we had originally settled on Red Chili on Portland Street because their menu looked divine online...however do not expect a warm welcome if you turn up at 9.30pm...Expect to receive a cold scowl and shoulder to match instead..so we left.. Anyway back to this place....Mooching through China town we thought ''hey lets try here'' the odd name certainly intrigued us... Instantly a cute waitress beckoned us in, pleasantly handing us a menu and guiding us to a table...each table was simply set with Chinese bowls and chopsticks which gave it that humble feeling... The menu in all honesty offered you items you would find on any Chinese menu, except for the odd fancy Sea bass dish. What grabbed our attention was the set meal where you could choose 3 items EACH from the starter menu, quarter of a duck to share , a main meal and rice/noodles each and a dessert....all for £24 ....bargain.. I was quite concerned how we were going to demolish this all...I mean my handbag was big that night..but the potential doggy bag was not going to fit... The starters to my relief were manageable , there were 4 pieces of assorted dumplings, dried seaweed, one chicken kebab and two hot and sour soups...which came in cute little glass casserole dishes.... The dumplings were like any other, but the soup ...tasted quite OXO cubey....very heavily flavoured in beef stock... The duck flew in next, to which a really polite waiter lovingly shred it in front of us... I admit I broke my Pescaterian diet because it looked so good...plus ducks live on water right? The mains , again ...these did not stand out...they were like any other Chinese Takeaway but the excellent service and friendly atmosphere ...made this special.. By the time we tried to eat this...there was no room for dessert and we were the last ones there..So I thought it would be polite and let these lovely people go home... Overall this place is really good value for money, I think it would be ideal for a large group to meet here and dine. as there would be no quibble about the expense.. The staff are just so genuine , and approachable..I think foodwise this is a three star,,,waiter wise I gives it a four...

We asked if one jug would be enough for our party of 3, to which the faultless response was "that depends how thirsty you are". As my visit here was about a month ago, the finer points are now lost in my memory. The stand-out dishes (the ones that I find myself daydreaming about) are the deep fried aubergine and the cold garlic belly pork. Give me a pile of each of these and I'll be very happy. Don't take squeamish companions here (or do, if you want to scare them). The menu is replete with various types of offal and organ. We ordered some lamb's ovary which was tasty enough - I'd order it again as part of a selection of dishes but it doesn't linger on my mind quite like the aubergine and the pork. The eponymous handmade noodles are delicious - thick and slightly chewy, in a delicious broth. Ours came with beef cooked with garlic and ginger, which was great. We ordered some baby squid skewers but had to make do with 'adult' squid as they had none. This was the main disappointment of the meal - so tough and chewy we struggled to maintain our dignity while gnawing through it. The seasoning hadn't permeated the squid at all and just left a greasy yet chalky residue on my tongue. Boiled rice was, you know, whatever. It's not something I ever personally choose (feels like a waste of time, money and calories) but it was sort of added to the order in a "and how many portions of rice would you like?" way. Food and beer for three greedy, thirsty people came to around £40. I would eat everything again other than the squid and would love to go back to try some more exciting and unusual dishes from their menu.

I was introduced to real Chinees food - I mean proper Chinese food, not gwailo-style, westernised stuff - in the late eighties, by my old friend Ronnie Chan. Ronnie and I would go weekly to Win Wah on Portland Street, an astoundingly cheap place where dishes cost £3-4, and I learned very quickly to use chopsticks (out of necessity - otherwise Ronnie would have eaten all the grub before I had any chance). Then Ronnie moved back to Hong Kong, Win Wah disappeared, and I was in the wilderness. After some years of searching, I found a new home at Wong Chu. Cheap, no-nonsense, with high-quality offerings - the noodle dishes, and the duck / pork / squid were always spot-on, I wandered the streets, checked the menus, and tried the other places - but always found myself returning to Wong Chu, because it was cheaper and better than the competition. I dined there hundreds of times. One Saturday morning in 2001, I opened my newspaper and saw the headline "Hacked to Death by Triad Maniacs". It was Mr Wong and his family. I'd seen Mrs Wong go through her two pregnancies, watched her kids scurry excitedly around the place, and I was devastated. But the restaurant re-opened, now managed by Mr Wong's adult daughter from a previous marriage, and continued to deliver great dining..... for another 5 or 6 years. Then it went into a sad decline - I have no idea why - and by the end, it was a pale shadow of its former self. Back to the wilderness. Now I have a new home in Chinatown. As good as Win Wah & Wong Chu at their respective peaks, with the same format - no-frills, low-end prices, but great quality, a relaxed and friendly informal atmosphere, and a menu of Hong Kong-style Chinese dishes that are a world away from the MSG-laden gwailo junk that's so ubiquitous in UK Chinese restaurants, Fu's is the real deal. Welcome home.

My favourite is the fish stew, done hot pot style and just so delicious you'd happily force yourself to eat too. Combos and sauces you might not have encountered before are the order of the day here and the creativity pays dividends. The secret trick here is not to be given the blue menu. They'll automatically pass it on if they think you're English, but it's the red one you want; that's what harbours all the wonderful stuff. The drinks are interesting too, especially the traditional Hong Kong iced tea, it's uber refreshing. And with wicked prices and smart service to boot, this is one gem you should ensure won't stay hidden long. Get stuck in.

Food wise I went for the shakshuka, it sounded nice, and it really was ... it was also EXTREMELY hot because it was served in cast iron and kept its heat. It was delicious. No comments on that. However, the host, who was also our waiter, was nice but we felt extremely rushed for our breakfast. He gave almost no time for us to decide on what we wanted to eat and seemed keen on getting us in and out and soon as possible even though we were one of two groups there. Like I said, he was nice and stuff but we felt really really rushed. Every time he would finish speaking to us, he would go over and speak with some guy sitting with a computer. So we think the rushing had something to do with him wanting to speak with whoever that was. The latte we got was delicious. The food was okay. Both our dishes came out warm or borderline cold. I asked for mine to be reheated and they agreed no problem, but when it came back, it was exact same temperature. I just gave up and said it was fine. The taste itself was okay. Definitely needed more flavor. Oh and why were both our dishes SWIMMING in chili oil?? I know the dishes said chili oil was part of the dish but I wasn't expecting chili oil soup with a side of steak and eggs basically. Idk if it was a presentation thing or a flavor thing.. either way it was just too much. just kept getting all over everything and one napkin is definitely not enough to handle all of that lol. I'd come back, but definitely not order what I ordered again.

This spot had decent reviews and it was open for an early dinner so we stopped in. It was absolutely delicious and definitely hit the spot for what we were hoping to get. We split everything between 4 of us so we shared the short ribs, the shredded beef in spicy sauce, egg-fried rice, and then the pork dumplings, shrimp dumplings and red bean buns. The ribs and beef were delicious - a really tasty sweet and spicy sauce. The dumplings were great and served steaming hot. All of us were pleasantly full after the meal and it was all cooked hot and fresh. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. It's comfortable and cozy and a great spot to great delicious Chinese if you're ever in the mood - and it looks like they do a lot of take out as well as have tables to sit down and dine in.

Holy crap, was this place good, and my sheltered students agreed: Red Chilli's food is better than anything available at where we live in the States! I ordered the Gong Bao Chicken (Kung Pao, for those Yankees who often get Panda Express) and...wow. Not only was everything super fresh but there were flavors/seasonings in the dish that I had never experienced before. I would certainly come back here again if I return to the area. The negatives, however nit-picky: The entrees don't come with rice (though, that could be my American fatness talking). The side of fried rice we did order was pricey and good, not great. Also, for those who are used to a Chinese restaurant menu in America, you might find Red Chilli's menu to be a little limiting, as there's no General Tso's Chicken or something similar.

Argh! This was not what I expected…read more My friend and I were pretty excited to try Siam Smiles after all the good reviews and were looking forward to some Thai culinary sunshine but both our dishes were seriously sub par. I had a soup with roast pork belly - the soup lacked any depth of flavour; the meat was just ok. My friend's chili and garlic chicken and rice dish looked totally uninteresting and was basically just a pile of raw chilis on top of some boring looking chicken and rice. She really didn't like it. Drinks wise they were out of lychee and regular Coke (my nightmare!!! Jk. But kind of not jk) so I decided on jasmine tea which cost £1.50...for a mug of hot water with a tea bag dumped in it. Hm. There are two menus shown on yelp at the minute - from November 2014 and January 2015. Neither are what we were shown, and I think the prices have gone up slightly again. In fact, the dishes now aren't that far off what you would get in nearby Thai restaurants like Phetpailin or even Try Thai or Chaophraya that have far nicer (and warmer) interiors. Might go back and try it again at some point but certainly not chomping at the bit!

Word has spread fast about this…read morehalf-restaurant, half-supermarket ever since a critic for Guardian Weekend magazine dropped by to eat here in October. The setting is pretty basic, but very clean, with white tables and simple orange plastic chairs. The menu, on the other hand, is pretty comprehensive given that all of the dishes are made by just one cook in their tiny kitchen at the back of the store. Some of the dishes we tried were as delicious as you'd find in places much more salubrious than these surroundings. Sharing is definitely recommended due to the wait - see above re: numbers of cooks. The drinks you can order (all non-alcoholic by the way) are simply plucked from the shelves by the waiting staff (bottles of soft drink) or made by the cashier behind the till (hot drinks such as jasmine tea). It's not particularly vegetarian-friendly here, and some of what we had could have been presented/prepared a bit better (I'm not a fan of eating raw ginger slices or whole red chillis, for instance) - but for meat lovers who like their spice, this place is worth trying.

Didsbury Noodles is a restaurant come takeout based on Lapwing Lane in West Didsbury. Just across…read morethe road from the West Didsbury tram stop and close to the major bus routes it's in the perect location to be able to grab something on your way home from work - which is exactly what I did tonight. I opted for Didsbury Noodles because I had a craving for the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup and I was aware that as well as your standard chinese takeout options, here Vietnamese dishes are also available. There are a few tables in the front of the restuarant but as far as I've seen in the past most people are sitting waiting for their food rather than actually eating in. The front of the restaurant is open with large glass windows so if you were to eat in you can enjoy the sites of Didsbury and people watch. I decided on the chicken pho and meat dumplings. The staff cleverly wrapped the chicken, noodles and beansprouts separately to the chicken stock and herb broth, which meant that when I got home I could mix it myself into the portion size I wanted and also things weren't soggy by the time I was ready to eat it. The pho was very flavoursome and had a little kick of chilli through it. The noodles were soft and the beansprouts were crispy giving the dish texture. The dumplings were filled with mixed meat and some vegetables, they were soft on the inside with a good crisp on the outside. A little greasy but certainly delicious. I will definitely be returning to Didsbury Noodles in future and I would recommend it to anyone in the local area.
