I'm a little surprised that I've never reviewed I am Pho before - such is the extreme awesomeness you can get here from a £7.50 bowl of steaming broth! Manchester is becoming quite the place to be for Vietnamese cuisine now with the Oldham Road area of town now becoming the Little Vietnam area of the city, muscling out the ancient Little Italy that has traditionally been here. I am Pho though is a lot more centrally located than this and actually advertises itself as the only Vietnamese restaurant in China Town. Although it's probably not going to win and interior design challenges the setting is efficient and relaxed which means it can cater for all sorts of moments - whether it's a meal out with friends, a quick snack on the way somewhere else or a cheap lunch - I've done all 3 and it just works! Pretty good value with a range of Vietnamese dishes (spring rolls, skewers etc) I do struggle to get past the Pho with it being so tasty. It's also super filling but hey why not get stuffed for £7.50 - especially if in my case raw beef Pho is your bag! Chinese tea is only £1 for a pot and they do some imported beers which are pretty good value as well so make sure you check them out! read more

we were craving something hot in this cold weather & i thought of pho! a few of my friends here have told me that i am pho was the best pho place in town so we put it to the rest! the location was easy to find but it's slightly underground so service/data is spotty;; once we walked in though, the service prompt brought us to a shared table which we didn't mind (quite use to it since two of us were brought from hong kong descent)! the inside was decorated nicely & it carried a nice warm/homely atmosphere! we went around half past one & there was quite a few people! i ordered the veggie pho while my two friends ordered a chicken dish (39), one with vermicelli and the other with rice! the food came out within 10-15 minutes just as we were catching up/having small talk! the service was very kind & bubbly which made the experience all the more pleasing! i really enjoyed the pho--the broth was very flavorful & there was loads of mushroom/tofu along with the noodle! the friends dishes look very appetizing as well & we all finished our foods happily! in total, between the three of us, we paid £25 which isn't bad/expensive as other noodle/pho based restaurants i've heard/seen! it was a really nice experience, especially since we stayed for quite a long time talking--the staff didn't mind & they were quite keen on playing korean music through the tv! read more

I am Pho is a cutesie little Vietnamese restaurant in the heart of China Town. Fairly plain and simple inside, but the food is absolutely cracking. I had the mixed meat pho which was packed with flavours. I asked for mine slightly spicy, which made it even warmer and enjoyable. The broth, noodles and meat are served in a bowl and on the side comes a tray of extras. There was a slice of lemon for those who like a little zing, beansprouts for a little crunch and chilis for those who like a little spice. I absolutely love Vietnamese food and I am Pho is definitely up there in my top restaurants to hit my cravings. Plus this restaurant has extremely reasonable prices. Winner winner! read more

Been here a couple times and generally really like the food. Both times I went, there was something who was from Vietnam in the group and they rated it. And ordered a banquette as a takeaway for the train ride home. As well as it being good, its also good value for them compared to London. Both times I have had similar dishes. I have had pho before in other places and not that keen on it - even if no coriander in it. We asked for no coriander in any of the dishes and that was no problem. First time here had the Vietnamese pancake - had it as Mi and Pho where it is amazing - BUT here at I Am Pho it wasnt good. Basically not a proper Vietnamese pancake - not thin enough. Too dough-y. So this most recent time, we had a couple different rice rolls - a mince beef one and prawn one. Delicious first time I had it and still delicious this time. We also shared some pork skewers which tasted good. For main, I had a noodle dish with garlic beef. Lots of garlic with the beef, the noodles itself are very plain but mix it with the beef and the chilli dipping sauce and its lovely. Its a big portion and very filling. If you get a pho, the portion is very big. Generally, its all big portions. For drinks, we just had water. I think first time just had tea so nothing expensive but the total cost is about £15 per person. read more

We went here during it's soft launch period and I must say I was very impressed. The service was 'work in progress' but I guess to be expected on soft launch. It was over attentive rather than under though. The food was fantastic, Vietnamese at it's best. Our starters were fresh and zingy and then we both followed with the Pho noodle soup. The broth had amazing depth of flavour and a little tip would be to add the birds eye chillies one at time as they were very spicy. Can't wait to get back here for more Pho! read more

I've only had the banh mih here, so this review is just about that. Firstly, the price is great - £3 for a freshly made sandwich, or £3.50 if you have two meats (which yes I did). The bread is more like a normal baguette than the slightly fatter shorter types I'm used to for banh mih, but it's good. Anyway, although the rest of the ingredients are all there, it feels like something is lacking the flavour. Was there some kind of tangy (lemon? vinegar? fish sauce?) element missing, maybe in the picked carrots? I don't know. I am not a food wizard. But more could be done. That said, I am sure I will be back in given the great value and the overall decent taste and change up from the usual sandwich. Would be interested to try the rest of the menu too (inevitably will as this is one of what appears to be only 2 Vietnamese restaurants in Manchester - argh), but that will have to wait for the evening...wish there were more quick take away options in Chinatown for lunch. Sooo after many recent recommendations i used pure will power not to go to Wasabi Sushi..but this place... Okay so we walk in and it reminds me of Bakdu...very clinical..the difference here is that the staff are VERY relaxed.. Taking a seat I unstuck the menu together to expose adequate pictures of available food.. there is a vast majority of soup based meals and dumpling type things to start. I noted that fish were quite limited on the Main menu...I decided on some prawn dumplings, prawn crackers and a won ton for a main.. The starter looked very pleasing to the eye and arrived quite swiftly. However although the textures were good, they were like mini mojitos..VERY minty... The main had a nice touch as extra condiments were placed in front of us, where we could add additional seasoning and ingredients..me being hard core put two tea spoons of chilli oil in mine...my lips are still swollen..better than botox I guess.. There was a lot of soup l! I recommend you share one..my wonton did not have many dumplings in it though :( to drink they offer Chinese tea, wine and Vietnamese beer..because I had already indulged in beer I thought I would be sensible and have the tea.. Overall again this place excellent for a cheap spicy broth, but I do know of better places. This was my first time at this really great little Vietnamese restaurant. Very clean and very efficient service. I had summer rolls to start and a very tasty noodle soup with pork and beef. A nice touch was a dish of fresh bean sprouts, chilli with which you can augment your dish. I'm just taking a mark off because the quality of the meat in the soup was not great - just too fatty for me. Raw beef; and 21. Chicken pho), banh cuon (thick, steamed, sticky rice rolls with chicken and mushroom) and bun cha (meat skewers and vermicelli). It was way too much food for 3 people - but it was all delicious. We accidently left a necklace behind, and called to see if they had found it. I really shouldn't be writing this review: all the other reviews are spot on and I'm only going to repeat what they say, but I Am Pho is so good that it deserves yet another 5 star review and even more praise heaped upon it. £7.50 for the "raw beef" pho (not really raw, actually delicious and tender) is fantastic. Delicate, incredibly clean flavours served quickly and with excellent service. The beef actually tastes like beef, rather than some horrible wagamama-style leathery protein analogous to beef that should never be presented as fit for human consumption. Ahem. I'll just add briefly that the chopsticks here are good wooden ones, so it's also a pleasure to eat the noodles. I despair of other places in Chinatown that go for plastic. No. Just no. My friend and I had just completed the Manchester marathon and were after protein and generally a LOT of food. I suggested Pho - hot soup, delicious noodles and tasty beef. YES PLEASE! I Am Pho has become my regular haunt for when I am craving good vietnamese noodles. It is such a reliable option - when everything else is closing its kitchen early, I Am Pho welcomes you in. The staff here are amazingly efficient and really friendly. And you never have to wait long for your food. Come here with a hungry belly and you will soon be munching away on flavoursome noodles. I have tried their vermicelli noodles and marinated beef (very tasty but it didn't live up to my favourite vietnamese restaurant back home in Australia) and both the spicy and non-spicy noodle soups. For people trying Pho for the first time, don't be put off by "raw beef" - it cooks in the hot soup and is extremely tender and satisfying. It is really good value and you will come out of here and roll down the street full of delicious noodle soup goodness. read more

Maybe I should have ordered the pho. It's right there in the name of the restaurant. But it just wasn't what I fancied. This place was mercifully quiet on a Saturday evening when Oonagh C and myself were scouting around Chinatown trying to get something to eat. It's easy to see why it wasn't rammed - looking a bit like a canteen, it's not a glamorous establishment where lots of people will flock on a weekend. But it served a purpose and met a need, so. Service was a bit slow and patchy but not terrible overall. I ordered prawn crackers, summer rolls, and leaf-wrapped pork dumplings with noodles. Everything was tasty. The sweet chilli sauce was particularly good and very spicy. Summer rolls with pork were good, very fresh tasting with a delicious satay sauce. Pork dumplings tasted nice but had a strange greasy texture - though maybe by this point I had just overloaded on pork ordering it for two courses. I came in for a quick bite during my stay in Manchester. My hotel was located nearby and I had a sudden craving for pho. I admit, I was curious to see how this place compares to my favorite local Vietnamese takeout in NYC. I ordered the pho with raw beef. Service was prompt and the noodle soup arrived in a short while. The first thing I noticed about the pho was it was served with mint instead of Thai basil. The second thing was the broth, which had a sweet taste to it. Neither is bad, just a personal preference and I prefer my pho broth on the less sweet side with basil. The beef was served as chunks instead of slices which made the dish very unauthentic for me. I also ordered a vegetarian salad to go. The salad was quite disappointing as it turned out to be a small portion of nothing more than cabbage with peanuts and fish sauce dressing. read more

I started loving the Vietnamese food after dined in three different Vietnamese places. For years, I hold an idea that Vietnamese were so much like Chinese cuisines. Plus the Chinese noodle soups are so brilliant that I have never bored of them. I decided to give a try on Pho on a winter afternoon for a quick lunch. I am Pho is hidden in Chinatown and I didn't even spot it when I walked passing it. It's such a simple and rustic place but the space was actually spacious. I sat next to a young generation Vietnamese. They spoke perfect English and know Vietnamese food just like they have them all the time at home. Although they have a typical Vietnamese food menu, my focus was specific on Pho. I ordered their meaty Pho, which included the raw beef, sliced beef, pork and chicken on top of the flat rice noodles. I am not greedy but just would like to see how their meats have been cooked in this place. I must admit all the meats were good. The raw beef was different (some Chinese don't usually eat raw red meats) but it bad been medium boiled when they met the broth. The sliced beef was exactly how it was in Chinese cuisines. The chicken was impressively tender and tasty. About the service, all I can say is it was prompt and efficient. No long waiting, no smile and friendly greeting. The thing made pho different from any other Chinese noodle soup is its fresh and clean soup. It also added fresh bean sprouts, basils and lemon/lime wedges into the soup while the soup was delicious and clear. You also can add fresh chill into your noodle but handle with caution since those chilli are very spicy. They also have their own beef paste and hoisin sauce on every table. I really liked Pho-the new form of noodle soup, which expanded my concept of this particular dish I have bad since being a child. I haven't tried others in I am Pho and I am very interested to come back to have a proper dinner to try the rice and fried noodle dishes. read more

It's mainly thanks to this place that I started discovering and relish Vietnamese cuisine. On my first visit I went for a dish of rice and chicken, good but not excellent; luckily on my second visit I decided to follow the advice of a friend, much more expert than me on Vietnamese food, so I opted for the Pho, a broth with meat and tagliatelle-shaped rice noodles. I found it super delicious, the beef was very tasty and, above all, I liked the fact that, alongside the soup, you get various herbs, chillies and sauces that you can add to your broth. Why only three stars then? The service is sometimes not too nice, and they have this annoying habit of adding 10% to the bill of groups of people composed by more than 6 people, but only groups of their choice, as it's clearly written on the menu (rices are not high though, almost everything costs less than 10£). During my last visit we also had a few issues paying by card. To conclude, the venue is not very warming, I would define it almost aseptic, and the main feature in the furniture is a gigantic pink fake three at the very centre of the room. read more

The noodles are not my favorite as I'm used to the really thin vermicelli noodles and the ones served here are a bit larger than I'd prefer but really that's my only qualm about this place. There's loads of different condiments on the table such as chilli oil and beef paste which can be added to your soup to make it taste just how you like it. Cute kitschy Vietnamese cafe with good food. This is definitely a cafe rather than a restaurant. Somewhere to go with your mates or long term partner not a seduction spot. I liked the cafe vibe. I definitely enjoyed the fake cherry tree in full blossom and the artwork on the walls. It's cheap and cheery which suited me. Plus, as it's not romantic it's possible to walk in with no booking (unlike the other 2 restaurants we tried). I had a pork pancake as a starter, which was a bit too greasy really. However I enjoyed my bbq pork and rice main course and all of what I sampled from Emily B's plates! We also shared some tasty crackers to start. I went for lunch with a friend and her lovely daughter one Saturday. They were very helpful when I mentioned a baby was going to be with us he offered me a table in a quiet part of the restaurant. We had some lovely jasmine tea although my friend warned me I might not want any additional liquid if I was ordering pho, a soup based dish. She was right, the pho is a huge portion and very filling. I had tofu and mushroom in mine and it was delicious. They bring chillis and lime so you can add your own, there is hot sauce on the table too if you want some heat. I loved this, the food is filling but I didn't feel too full or uncomfortable afterwards. If you are in Chinatown but fancy something a little different then I really recommend this place. read more

Wow. This place is ALWAYS a treat! My boyfriend and I are always coming back to this place and it's no wonder why. The staff are friendly and the food is cheap and delicious. For both my boyfriend and myself with starters, mains and drinks, we usually spend about £30. Every time I go, I know exactly what I want - Vegetarian spring rolls (£4.80) and the Pho Bo Tai (£7.50) with mushrooms in it. For those who don't know what Pho is, it is a basic broth made with meat, generally served with rice noodles, and a mix of vegetables. The first thing you notice once you sit at the table will always be the extra flavoring that you can add to your pho. There is a good selection of things (beef paste, chilli oil, hoisin sauce, fish sauce, sriracha) on the table, in addition to the tray of fresh things that the waiters bring out with your pho. They usually bring you fresh coriander and Thai basil, a huge helping of bean sprouts, fresh chilli, and some lime. We are always served promptly and with courtesy - the staff treat us like family and it's so nice to see. A few times now I have seen the staff go outside and help customers with prams in through the entrance (it's down some steep stairs without a ramp) and carry them down the steps. You'd think that since it is in a basement, it would be dark or dank, or gloomy in some way, and it really isn't. The overhead lights change colors as you eat and it had a very nice ambiance to it overall. It's usually fairly busy around suppertime, but at lunch it is more quiet - something I really like. The menu is varied and though I stick to my favorites, my boyfriend enjoys everything from the summer rolls to the pork skewers to the wonton noodles and says everything is equally scrumptious. Even if you have never had pho before, the waiters explain everything to you once they bring out your food, and are happy to answer any questions as to flavor profiles and what extra flavorings go nice with which broths. And yes, they have vegetarian options in both the starters and the mains! The portion sizes for the pho are absolutely gigantic, and it's delicious all the way down to the very last spoonful. This restaurant is tucked away downstairs, so it is easy to miss. The place is pretty cozy with simple decorations like most of the Vietnamese restaurants I've been to around the world. I went there with a group of 4, and we all ordered pho. There was not a good variety of pho which was a bit disappointing. I'm used to being able to select from a list of nearly 20 options, but I Am Pho comes in under a half-dozen. I had the rare steak, and the steak came out over-cooked. I like my rare steak rare...have some pink on it! Instead, it came out tough and brown. The broth is ok but it was not hot enough to properly cook the bean sprouts. One redeeming quality is that the noodles were cooked just right and had a good texture, which I enjoyed. The staff was friendly and fast. In Footscray, Melbourne there is a Pho noodle house on just about every corner. When I came across this Pho house in Manchester my heart nearly exploded. Despite looking a little like a school canteen, which is actually quite typical for Pho Houses, the Pho was delicious with good prices!! I think you can get a bowl of pho (which is an enormous bowl) for about £5-7. My favourite is Beef Brisket. Yes it is raw beef but it is so thinly sliced that it cooks in the broth as you eat it and it is amazing. Highly recommend! read more

The inside is basic cafe style with tables that seat about 6 or 8. Great for a group of you not so great if you want a cozy dinner for 2. Went for the rice paper wrapped prawns for starter at £3.50 very good value as you got 3 lots with three king pawns in and a lovely dipping sauce. Couldn't not have the Pho ( what with it being the main dish in the name of the resto!) so i went for the chicken Pho. Our waiter showed us the various little bottles of sauces on the table and advised us to customise our own broth- was very tasty and meant that you could get the right amount of heat! We didn't have to wait too long for a table on a Saturday night which was great, and we had a very generous basket of prawn crackers to snack on. I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 3 because I'm basing this on Manchester standards, by which I mean there are only 3 genuine Vietnamese restaurants. First impressions was that this place was clean, modern, minimalistic apart from the blossom tree feature in the middle of the restaurant, and has good service! The lighting was a bit dim but not awful. We came here as it was the ONLY place in Manchester that serves Bahn Cuon - this delicious oriental lasagne wrapped in silky rice sheets and steamed with mince and black fungus filling. The dish looked perfect but was lacking in seasoning. We also ordered prawn summer rolls which was served with the lovely traditional accompaniment peanut hoisin sauce, nem spring rolls which were okay, two delicious piping hot bowls of Pho (one with sliced raw beef and the other with everything!) the Pho was authentic and delicious and generously portioned. My only criticism was that it was not served with more herbs than just mint. However, upon requesting for Thai basil and coriander, I did manage to get more coriander. The staff were great and friendly. I would definitely come back again as this is a more convenient location that the other two on Oldham Road. The place was very popular with young people as it was filling up nicely when we left it on Saturday evening. read more

To say this is standard vietnamese cuisine may make this sound plain and unexciting, but what I mean is I have been to Vietnam, sat on those plastic chairs and supped my broth from a bowl on a street corner, and the guys at I am Pho have recreated this culinary experience, albeit giving me a table and side dish of garnishes to justify the price difference (honestly Manchester I don't expect you to make a living serving bowls of deliciousness for the equivalent of 2000 dong). The food is clean, by that I mean you will feel no guilt after eating a massive bowl, its all good stuff in there. The coffees (or should I say coffee flavoured drinks?) will sort out the fluffiest heads and I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes. I am a happy noodler whenever I go and I will be back. When people speak of a hidden gem, this is what they're talking about. Hidden away on George Street in Manchester's China Town, there is a small staircase down to a venue on a lower level. Once there, you're greeted by very friendly staff and seated in a clean and simple cafeteria style setup of tables and chairs. The atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming, with a very diverse clientele. The menu isn't very expansive, but what's on offer is all very good. I had been looking for some time now for a Vietnamese restaurant who does Banh Mi, those delicious baguettes filled with all manner of delights. I Am Pho definitely delivers on that front, but other dishes equally as delicious are on offer as well. Whether it's spring rolls, the Vietnamese staple of summer rolls or classic main dishes like Pho, it's all there for you to try and without a dud in sight. After being stuck in downtown manchester traffic for what seemed like an eternity, I walked to this place after finding a parking garage to leave the car. It's on a quiet side street on the edge of Chinatown and it's in the basement of a building. The decor is a bit run down but I came for the food so I didn't mind it. The waitstaff is young and not very good at being servers. After I placed my order I sat and waited as two other tables arrived, ordered their food, receive their food, eat their food, pay the check and leave before I waved over a server that was hanging out behind the little bar with the rest of the servers. They didn't put in my order! So I had to wait some more before my spring rolls and sliced raw beef pho finally made it to my table. The bad experience aside, the food was just plain mediocre. The food is alright but the service by the manager is really bad, the worst I've seen. Very rude and unapologetic about his bad attitude by going his way out to scold his customers... It's a pity the food is good, and the rest of the staff are nice. To sum up, absolutely not worth enjoying a bad dinning experience, especially if you are there to celebrate a special occasion. I am Pho would do better with a more patient and responsible person in charge. read more
