    Sichuan Noodle soup
    Cindy L.

I am trying the best as I can not to be biased as I am writing this review. And coming from California, it is a bit difficult, but I really have to give Red Chili a break. For it's location, the food isn't too bad at all, especially when they have the lunch time deal, which I so dearly appreciate as an international student! Whenever I come for the lunch special, I usually go for the choice of meat & sauce - wherein I go for the beef & black pepper sauce (YUM!), and a side of boiled rice (egg fried rice just seems going too far on the savoury side). And I think they do that quite well. I have also came here during their non-lunch-special times, and had the sichuan noodle soup, of which I expected to be quite spicy, seeing that it was supposed to be Sichuan cuisine. Sadly, it was not. But then again, with my experiences, not much in the UK really is, so it was good effort. But I was really expecting a kick! The interior is very nice. Definitely a nice place to take the parentals to. For the value, I think it is quite fair, although I personally wouldn't really come unless they had their lunch special! Which I have heard they no longer have =[. Please bring it back!

I'm actually quite surprised that so many people are a fan of this restaurant. Granted, the sunken dining room and interior design provides an enjoyable dining experience, but the quality of the food is in no way comparable to the gems of China town (again, Chinese food enthusiast here). I do absolutely give credit to their amazing lunch deal. £8 for a starter, main dish, and choice of rice. £10 for 2! starters, main dish, and choice of rice. For the amount of food you get, it's a great offer. However, I found the quality of the food to be pretty average. It was also a major bummer when I got the crispy chili beef (for the second time since the first time blew my mind). And there was hardly any beef within the fried bits. I was so sad, my emotions were all over the place. I simply could not recover. Overall, it's a solid lunch spot but I probably won't be going back due to the mediocrity of the food. You can find me at Happy Seasons or the Rice Bowl instead!

Sechuan pork and Noodles with spicy soup. Lovely.

Four stars! I came here for the Yelp world food night, and was advised by my new friend Max that Sechuan was the specialty. He wasn't wrong. The food here was outstanding, authentic and full of flavour. There were seven of us and no one was shy with the experimental stuff so I got to try some incredible dishes. High points for me were the eel, the pork belly stew and the spicy Sechuan pork and noodle soup. I'd recommend this place to anyone who wants to try some new dishes that go beyond takeaway standards. The tofu was the best I've had, having tried it a couple of times before with less than joyous results. Here, it made sense and I truly did enjoy it.

My parents are from Hong Kong so I've not been brought up eating chillies or very spicy dishes but I am a big fan of this Chinese restaurant which specialises in Szechuan and Beijing cuisine! Unlike most of the tired looking restaurants in China Town, Red Chilli is boldly decorated - a bit blingy for some! It's a large restaurant with wall dividers creating intimate spaces as well as large round tables for parties of 8+. I've been here for their lunch specials - service can be quite slow during busy lunch times but the food comes out piping hot and generously portioned. The lunch affair is a little bit more than your average British Chinese favourites but not much. The real gems come out of the pictured main a la carte menu. This is amazing because having pictures make people unfamiliar with Chinese food more adventurous! The dishes are authentic and this is evident from the large Chinese patronage. On our latest visit, we ordered a selection of starters - Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings, Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab (came out in a heavy batter rather than a light cornflour dusting), Spare Ribs in OK Sauce (the ribs came chopped up in bite-size pieces), Filet Steak Rolls in Cantonese Sauce (the beef was a bit dry) and Pan Fried Shredded Courgette Pancakes - all were generously portioned. For our mains, we had Shredded Pork, Tea Tree Mushroom, Sliced Bamboo Shoots and Pepper Stew (not spicy, very light and good textures) and Frog's Legs in Big Grandma's Chilli Sauce Stew (very tasty and not too spicy) both of which were served on a mini cauldron and bubbled away at out table. We also had Stir Fried King Prawns, Chicken and Fried Beancurd Balls (a nice light dish usually but wasn't too great here), Spicy Hot Poached Mutton in Chilli Oil (very hot and only for the adventurous - looks slightly overwhelming but the soft tendon mutton is so worth it!), Geleshan Dry Fried Diced Chicken with Pepper Corn & Dried Chilli (this was not so great - the chicken was a bit on the chewy side and did not taste of much unless you got one of the dried chillies but then it was only heat and not actually tasty). Come here if you love your traditional Chinese food! Especially if you like it spicy!

Always one of my favourites Red Chilli felt it had lost a little of it lustre on this visit - in attention to detail though rather than quality of food. Arriving at 8 for dinner for two we were not treated (nor was anyone else) to the usual complimentary appetisers of roasted nuts and pickled vegetables. Service was as friendly as always and the food was great. Prawn and pork dumplings, seafood and beef birds nest and braised pork with pak choi rich in aromas and flavour. We were however surround by stacked chairs and a stored table which felt lazy and undermined the ambience and sense of occasion. After so many fine meals here though, I'll forgive them this once.

I'm honestly shocked by the 1 star review that a previous reviewer gave Red Chilli. I absolutely love this place! For those in the know about Chinese food, Red Chilli serves authentic Beijing and Sichuan cuisine. For those who (like me) don't know what that means, expect strong chilli and soy flavours and rich, sticky sauces. The food here is great quality, and delicious too. Though the a la carte menu is sizeable and exciting, the absolute stand-out thing about Red Chilli is the £5 lunchtime special menu. This absolute gem of a menu is available Mon-Fri 12-2, and costs £5 for a main, or £8 for an astounding three courses. And there's no cop-out, either; the three course meal consists of soup (hot and sour or chicken and sweetcorn), dim sum (spring rolls or salt and pepper ribs...go for the ribs!) and a substantial main. The main choice is wide, with six meat or veg options that you can team with one of ten sauces, and a further eleven complete dishes including beef fried rice and Singapore vermicelli. I can't even do the maths, so let's say there are approximately four million combinations, that should cover most bases. My favourite is the beef in gongbao sauce. I had never even heard of gongbao sauce before coming here, and man I'm glad I did. It's a thick, sticky, fragrant chilli sauce full of whole peanuts and sliced garlic and chillis, and a lot of beef. Also highly recommended is Curly Friend's favourite, Singapore vermicelli and Vege Friend's mixed vegetables in satay sauce. The a la carte is not as bargainous as the lunch menu, but they do offer set banquets (for those who find the colossal menu too hard to handle) for between £22 and £26 per person. But where's the fun in that, when you can explore the menu! Starters and dim sum will set you back between £3-£7, mains £7.50-£16. It's not the cheapest place to eat if you're going on an evening, but the food is well cooked, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is great. The general idea I have of Red Chilli is that it is great for lunch, truly marvellous, and though I wouldn't pop in for a casual dinner, it's nice for a special occasion. Hmmm, that reminds me, it's my birthday soon...

Amazing food, atmosphere, staff. This Red Chilli on Oxford Road I'd a lot better than its parent on Portland Street, not as central but big, great decor, good chouce, quality food, good price on wine, starters, set menus x had prawn and pork dim sum for starters, crispy beef fillet, king prawns in red and green chilli, belly pork with Pak Choi Cabbage and egg fried rice, 14 quid for a good Chilean merlot, 7 quid for starters and about 8 quid each main course :-) x

The Plymouth Grove Restaurant is aptly named as it is located within the old Plymouth Grove Hotel off you guessed it, Plymouth Grove. The exterior looks the same as it ever was (being a Grade 2 listed building), but inside is completely changed, to provide a semi open kitchen, takeaway counter (also delivers) and seating for over 100 people. There is a pretty extensive menu, serving your usual sweet and sour chicken and fried rice, but they also cater for the chinese crowd, with roast meats, flat noodles, and congee. The banquets are well worth the money; we had a banquet for 5 between 5 of us and there was still enough for each person to take some home for lunch the next day. The dim-sum here is good value for money, but the roast meats (those roast ducks hanging next to the window) are also well cooked are the star attraction! For the unadventurous, I also note that they do burgers and chips!

Not only was everything super fresh but there were flavors/seasonings in the dish that I had never experienced before. I would certainly come back here again if I return to the area. The negatives, however nit-picky: The entrees don't come with rice (though, that could be my American fatness talking). The side of fried rice we did order was pricey and good, not great. Also, for those who are used to a Chinese restaurant menu in America, you might find Red Chilli's menu to be a little limiting, as there's no General Tso's Chicken or something similar.

A brief history of Chinatown favourites…read more..... I was introduced to real Chinees food - I mean proper Chinese food, not gwailo-style, westernised stuff - in the late eighties, by my old friend Ronnie Chan. Ronnie and I would go weekly to Win Wah on Portland Street, an astoundingly cheap place where dishes cost £3-4, and I learned very quickly to use chopsticks (out of necessity - otherwise Ronnie would have eaten all the grub before I had any chance). Then Ronnie moved back to Hong Kong, Win Wah disappeared, and I was in the wilderness. After some years of searching, I found a new home at Wong Chu. Cheap, no-nonsense, with high-quality offerings - the noodle dishes, and the duck / pork / squid were always spot-on, I wandered the streets, checked the menus, and tried the other places - but always found myself returning to Wong Chu, because it was cheaper and better than the competition. I dined there hundreds of times. One Saturday morning in 2001, I opened my newspaper and saw the headline "Hacked to Death by Triad Maniacs". It was Mr Wong and his family. I'd seen Mrs Wong go through her two pregnancies, watched her kids scurry excitedly around the place, and I was devastated. But the restaurant re-opened, now managed by Mr Wong's adult daughter from a previous marriage, and continued to deliver great dining..... for another 5 or 6 years. Then it went into a sad decline - I have no idea why - and by the end, it was a pale shadow of its former self. Back to the wilderness. Now I have a new home in Chinatown. As good as Win Wah & Wong Chu at their respective peaks, with the same format - no-frills, low-end prices, but great quality, a relaxed and friendly informal atmosphere, and a menu of Hong Kong-style Chinese dishes that are a world away from the MSG-laden gwailo junk that's so ubiquitous in UK Chinese restaurants, Fu's is the real deal. My favourite is the fish stew, done hot pot style and just so delicious you'd happily force yourself to eat too. Combos and sauces you might not have encountered before are the order of the day here and the creativity pays dividends. The secret trick here is not to be given the blue menu. They'll automatically pass it on if they think you're English, but it's the red one you want; that's what harbours all the wonderful stuff. The drinks are interesting too, especially the traditional Hong Kong iced tea, it's uber refreshing. Anyway we had originally settled on Red Chili on Portland Street because their menu looked divine online...however do not expect a warm welcome if you turn up at 9.30pm...Expect to receive a cold scowl and shoulder to match instead..so we left.. Anyway back to this place....Mooching through China town we thought ''hey lets try here'' the odd name certainly intrigued us... Instantly a cute waitress beckoned us in, pleasantly handing us a menu and guiding us to a table...each table was simply set with Chinese bowls and chopsticks which gave it that humble feeling... The menu in all honesty offered you items you would find on any Chinese menu, except for the odd fancy Sea bass dish. What grabbed our attention was the set meal where you could choose 3 items EACH from the starter menu, quarter of a duck to share , a main meal and rice/noodles each and a dessert....all for £24 ....bargain.. I was quite concerned how we were going to demolish this all...I mean my handbag was big that night..but the potential doggy bag was not going to fit... The starters to my relief were manageable , there were 4 pieces of assorted dumplings, dried seaweed, one chicken kebab and two hot and sour soups...which came in cute little glass casserole dishes.... The dumplings were like any other, but the soup ...tasted quite OXO cubey....very heavily flavoured in beef stock... The duck flew in next, to which a really polite waiter lovingly shred it in front of us... I admit I broke my Pescaterian diet because it looked so good...plus ducks live on water right? The mains , again ...these did not stand out...they were like any other Chinese Takeaway but the excellent service and friendly atmosphere ...made this special.. We asked if one jug would be enough for our party of 3, to which the faultless response was "that depends how thirsty you are". As my visit here was about a month ago, the finer points are now lost in my memory. The stand-out dishes (the ones that I find myself daydreaming about) are the deep fried aubergine and the cold garlic belly pork. Give me a pile of each of these and I'll be very happy. Don't take squeamish companions here (or do, if you want to scare them). The menu is replete with various types of offal and organ. We ordered some lamb's ovary which was tasty enough - I'd order it again as part of a selection of dishes but it doesn't linger on my mind quite like the aubergine and the pork. The eponymous handmade noodles are delicious - thick and slightly chewy, in a delicious broth. Ours came with beef cooked with garlic and ginger, which was great. We ordered some baby squid skewers but had to make do with 'adult' squid as they had none. This was the main disappointment of the meal - so tough and chewy we struggled to maintain our dignity while gnawing through it. The seasoning hadn't permeated the squid at all and just left a greasy yet chalky residue on my tongue. Boiled rice was, you know, whatever. It's not something I ever personally choose (feels like a waste of time, money and calories) but it was sort of added to the order in a "and how many portions of rice would you like?" way. Food and beer for three greedy, thirsty people came to around £40. I would eat everything again other than the squid and would love to go back to try some more exciting and unusual dishes from their menu.
