Nice sushi to start with and then the Spicy pepper squid as the main. I highly recommend it.

Sitting in an underground premises on Oxford Road, Umami reflects the students swarming all around the local area. A slightly budget w***m**a but with same bench tables, open kitchen and scribbling-down-your-order-on-your-paper-place-mat kind of vibe. They do great lunch deals, which include a starter and a main for just £4.95, which really is a steal. I went to Umami with two friends for a quick lunch and we all taken in by the lunch deal. For my appetiser I had the king prawn gyoza dumplings. They came with a tasty dipping sauce and were served really quickly. For the main course, I chose the ngaulam gaeng keow wan (I wrote it down!) which is basically a thai green curry. It came with lots of cucumber which isn't really my thing, but it was hot both in a spicy and temperature way so it really did the job for me as it was freezing outside! At times, I did feel that it was so spicy the taste of the dish was lost, but I guess that depends on individuals' tastes. Umami is just fine if you're a student and fancy a quick, cheap bite to eat. It's not as good as Wagamama though. Oops. I said it. Wagamama. And again.

It will be acceptable to serve your main course before you have finished your starter. Lunch deal - £5.95 for 2 courses is good value and I had decent gyoza (3 pcs) and what was essentially won ton soup which wasn't particularly flavourful except I thought the dumplings themselves were quite good. There is a full menu too and basically this place is pretty good, overall though I do prefer eatGoody (it's Korean food though) which is also marginally closer to my office.

The food is classed as pan asian which is great as I love all asian food. However, the sushi, although very good, I feel it is slightly overpriced for what you get. My first visit to Sakana and I was pleasantly surprised at how its interior looked (more so the delicious smells wafting over as you passed by their open kitchen). We were seated in a corner with decent views of the goings-on, and set about conquering the menu - the group was almost military in its tactics, dividing the menu's sections between ourselves to make sure we got to sample lots of different dishes. Three of us ordered a bottle of their house red (a Merlot) which was actually quite good - a bit on the peppery side but I really liked it. The food started to arrive after a bit of a wait, but we'd had some prawn crackers to whet our appetite. The sashimi platter that I ordered for us all to share was a bit disappointing (usual price £28 for 15 pieces). I can't think of anything else that was particularly underwhelming; the combo of orders was all rather good - but the highlights for me were the Taiwanese buns which you could have with shredded duck or pork belly (we ordered both). These were absolutely heavenly, for want of a better word. Service was friendly, if not a tad haphazard at times; it's definitely somewhere to consider for date night. That being said, you'd have to be happy 'flashing the cash' as I don't think it's worth the full price they'd ordinarily be charging diners.

The food is good and the service is pleasant though they do add a (removable) service charge by default. It's in the Arndale shopping centre so it's quite noisy and you definitely hear the music and announcements from the centre. Plenty of seats, both bar seating and booths. They have recently launched new deals including a pricey all you can eat option and a three-plates for a set price option on Mondays.

On my trip, it was a little late to open as they had problems with the hot food service ... these things happen so I won't hold it against them ... so I got a seat straight away, the staff were extremely helpful and it felt good. I love the idea of food coming around and you checking it out on the menu and picking it up. First thing I picked up was some broccoli ... it was really nice .. the sauce it was in was awesome. I did kinda have an idea of what I wanted before hand so I just had to wait for it ... as it was just opening, things were a little slow to come around ... plus I was like at the opposite end of where the sushi chefs were so it probably all went anyways. I wanted the seared beef but it never came and, thinking about it now, it probably won't have come until the hot food part was working again ... by the time it was on, it was fuller so it would have taken a while and I'd already had 2 desert plates so going back to beef would have been weird I opted for the basic water .. it was so cool that there was a tap in front of me to get however much I wanted, when I wanted it. The downside was that it was tepid .. so maybe the cooling thing was bopped too or they hadn't turned it on I don't know. I finally tried my sushi and it was meh ... but this is me not really liking it so it could have been amazing. One downside for me was the soy sauce ... it was far too salty for my liking ... but I am used to having low sodium soy sauce at home so going to normal soy sauce is a big change. The desert plates were awesome .. I had a pancake with custard thing with a raspberry coulis and omg .. I wanted that coulis on everything ... I even did put it on the chocolate moochi that I also picked up ... the deserts were amazing but to go to a sushi restaurant for desert is weird. As I say .. if you like sushi then by all means go for it .. you'll love it ... but if like me you're not sure and wanna try it then go .. but look at what's on offer before hand to try it. It was also expensive .. but I guess sushi is. 4 plates cost me a little less than a burger and fries from solita and I couldn't finish the burger .. this left me slightly contempt but I snacked later. GREAT PLACE IF YOU LIKE SUSHI ... I can't stress that enough ... my review was because I found out I don't like sushi it seems. But I'm glad I tried it

I passed this place the other week (it's been there since mid August) Walking in reminded me of the large fridge section of boots or Eat. All the sushi here comes prepacked so its ideal for the quick takeout.. With a choice of udon soups on the top shelf, underneath they had individually wrapped handrolls, large sashimi boxes, salmon , chicken, dumplings and swordfish. As for the drinks I didn't see anything alcoholic..not even the likes of sake or asahi.. Choosing a stackful of boxes we opened them up to reveal our treasure. The first one was the seared swordfish, which is not the cheapest fish . Yet here I was eating massive chunks of it for £3.50 ODD. Next was the tuna and salmon sashimi box. I think this was the most expensive box,at £7 but the amount of sashimi it contained was amazing. Box number 3 exposed x3 salmon nigiri, x3 tuna Nigiri , x6 salmon California rolls and edamame beans . This was around the 6.50 Mark which again works out cheaper than £2 a plate for two pieces! Finally we fought over the salmon box, which held maki and nigiri for £3.50. This place gets its high rating mainly due to the ideology of it. Cracking concept, great value for money and convenient. I mean the decor is okay..although next time look at the ceiling in the toilet ...there is a camera..hopefully its no longer live... The service was also pleasant, a nice lady who asked if we prefered forks or chopsticks (which came with a tooth pick-) However the food will never be five star because everything is refrigerated which makes the rice not as palatable. The tuna is also the same grade that wasabi use..tasty but I'm sure it artificially dyed. So overall I would come back again for some sashimi and a hot soup..but I will not have the very ricey dishes.

It has a really great vibe and has been busy every time I've passed by - you really need to pick a bit of a quieter time for your first trip though as there is so much to choose from! It's all lined up on shelves like you would find at a supermarket, however the team are constantly bringing out boxes so you know what you're looking at is super fresh. I've tried two lunches there now - the first was Chicken Teriyaki Rice which they heat for you before you go. This was delicious with great flavour, although could have done with a little more chicken. Today I went with the Dumpling & Nudo King Prawn Sushi Rice Set. Again flavours were spot on, although there was no description of what was in the dumplings (I think veggies). I also tried the Jasmine Silver Needle Tea (£1.80) which I've managed to get three drinks out of and still plenty of flavour. http://nudosushibox.com/menu Sadly they've priced the boxes quite high, with most items coming it at around £5.00 & above, so this could only ever be a treat option for lunch. For a healthy and fresh lunch alternative to a bog standard sandwich though, it's a great shout. Well worth checking out.

I was SUPER excited to see that they sold Onigiri, I lived off these when I was in Japan and they're such a tasty, handy little snack. I had one for breakfast this morning :) I usually opt for the cooked tuna one which is YUMMY. It's basically a filled rice ball (or triangle) in a seaweed blanket. The only negative was the packaging, it's a faff to get in to and in the process of opening the packet you undo the seaweed, then have to put it all together again before digging in. Annoying. This time round I opted for the Salmon in black bean sauce rice bowl which is served warm. It was delish! I love black bean sauce and this didn't disappoint, the portion is pretty big, I didn't end up eating a proper dinner in the evening as I was still full from lunch. This branch is very conveniently located in the very centre of town with the option to take out or eat in. There's usually a queue at lunch time but it tends to move quite quick.

This is such a convenient idea, if you crave sushi but don't have time to sit somewhere like Wasabi Sushi you can literally grab and go from here. When you walk in various open fridges line the wall where you can take your pick. Each box contains a portion of wasabi, pickled ginger and soya sauce. They vary from salmon maki and sashimi boxes, calafornia rolls, Tuna sashimi, grilled swordfish, dumplings and ramen soups. I did try a soup the other day I did find this bland but the sashimi boxes are good value for money. Usually at a sushi place you can pay £6+ for a couple of piece, here you get a good portion for the same price. Other tid bits they sell are temaki handrolls, wasabi peas, edame beans and soft drinks ( no booze) .. You can choose to sit in the quite clincal cafe or take these home however I would recommended eating it the same day. I did buy some and ate it the next day and the rice was not pleasant, I think because they sit in a fridge all day anyway does not help. Overall a excellent concept, I do prefer the decor on Oxford Street though .

The fish is the freshest possible and comes served on an authentic Japanese platter with a compartment for soy sauce, wasabi and ginger. You can afford to keep ordering, which is exactly what I do on every visit. The restaurant is smart, and feels much posher than most of the places in the oriental area of Manchester, which it is on the border of. The prices though are unaffected as its one of the cheapest around. It's a very professional place and would be suitable for anything from business lunches to parties. You will be served by very pretty waitresses in beautiful oriental dress and treated to some Japanese pop music videos on their DVD player. Japanese art lines the walls.
