TL;DR - An authentic taste of Japan, right here in Manchester.
We were in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago and desperately miss the place now we've come back, so when we heard about this Japanese tea room in Ancoats we had to give it a try.
Authenticity is the name of game here - take your shoes off before sitting, baskets by the seats for your bags, a menu in English and Japanese... But the star of the show is when you order tea - you get a real tea ceremony! Everything is done by the book, warming bowls, quantities of matcha to water... Even the utensils used are authentic.
When we first arrived, our first thought was that service was slow but don't be mislead. This is customer service Japanese style and when you're being served you are the absolute centre of attention. Everything is prepared with care and attention - this place is as much about the experience as the food and drink, and it excels on both counts.
In fact, this place is such a tranquil oasis it's incredibly easy to forget that you're in a modern unit on Great Ancoats Street.
I'm not sure when we'll next make it to Japan, but we'll certainly be back here very soon. read more
