Lovely wee hipster cafe in the Northern Quarter. Great outside seating and amazing coffee - my flat White was fantastic and served up by the friendliest waiter ever and that made it even more enjoyable. They had a full food menu available but unfortunately I was just making a pit stop! Hopefully I'll get to visit again and try the grub and specialty tea!
I really want to slap on a 4-5 star rating on this place but I just can't. Meeting my frightened friend off the 'armoured train as he called it; I thought I would settle him into Manchester by taking him for a good breakfast. I have wanted to try Teacup for awhile, as its always busy and the decor just looked homely. Chancing it on a Sunday morning, this place was already packed. As soon as we got to the counter, a massive queue appeared out of thin air. Good timing. The lovely lady at the podium greeted us warmly and stated that there would be a 5 min wait. We accepted this challenge Five minutes soon passed by, when we were led to a table and introduced to our waitress who reported what the soup of the day was. Browsing through the menu, which consisted of posh beans on toast, eggs, sandwichs, pies and cakes my initil thoughts were it was quite pricey. But I thought hey if the quality is good I don't mind paying it. I selected the duck eggs poached on top of avocado, wild mushrooms on toast . To wash it down I went for the blueberry milkshake. It was quite nice how she flipped the menus over which became the placemats...quite a nifty idea actually. The drinks came first...bearing in mind I love a good sweet milkshake, but for £4.50 this tasted like a " be healthy smoothie" ...it was pleasant, but not what I expected. My friend went for the hot choc, which after slurping, it was more like a luke warm choc..tasty but cold! Sitting in hope, I waited for the food to blow my socks off...when mine arrived I was disappointed considering that for £9.50 all I was given was one egg to share between two pieces of dry toast. The mushrooms looked interesting with their wildness, but some had not been washed throughly which left me with some grittiness... Not pleasant. The bread was so difficult to cut through that I must have looked even less so lady like trying to saw it in pieces...in the end I abandoned all cutlery altogether.. My friend enjoyed his scrambled eggs, but for £6 I think that's pricey for 2 pieces big bread with egg on it. Overall I think this place is over rated, over priced pretentious shizzle. I wouldn't mind coming here for tea and cake (because the cake looked divine) but I wouldn't queue for it again. I have had a similar but tastier and cheaper breakfast at a chain called Bills in Watford which. I think I will try the one in Manchester...
Owned by local deejay Mr Scruff and his manager Gary, Teacup is a cute cafe inbetween print shops, clothes boutiques and bars in the Northern Quarter. It started off selling a cracking range of tee-shirts, crockery and limited edition screenprints as well as food and drink but these seem to have disappeared recently. Outside there's a couple of tables and chairs where you can catch the rays on a sunny day and inside there's enough space for a large coach party. The only problem is, the staff don't seem equipped to deal with a dozen customers let alone a coach party! I've been to Teacup three or four times this year alone and although I love their range of smoothies and hot drinks, I have to admit the service is so slow I'm always tempted to nip behind the counter and offer to make my own! If you're not in a rush however and you fancy a great fruit smoothie (my usual tipple is the Aretha Franklin!) a pot of organic and fairtrade tea or a piece of cake, Teacup is a fun place to go. They also do plates of pie, mash and peas - which I've never tried but have heard are the perfect cure for a hangover!
Awesome little cafe! Funky decorations and scrumptious looking brunch menu (too bad we'd already eaten brunch and were just in search of good coffee). Notwithstanding I was full near to bursting, i still succumbed to a blackforest choccie tart and also tried my friends eggnog tart. The blackforest tart had a deep dark chocolate flavour with a moist cherry plopped in the centre - not too sweet and not too rich either, just a perfect texture and flavour! In contrast, the eggnog tart was very light and fluffy - but again, not overpoweringly sweet and the pastry was perfect (not too flaky but not death-by-buttery-short either). All up I think quality of the food and general decor of the place was awesome and would've been a perfect joint to chill out on a sunday arvo with the paper and/or book + 3 coffees and a pot of tea later... Last but not least, my macchiato was perfect!! 3 thumbs up for this place. Must have brunch here if ever in manc again!
As tea/coffee shops go, Teacup IS as good as it gets for me. That's why when arranging to meet Kevin, the regional community manager of Yelp, I booked us a table. In this little Northern Quarter gem; Tea is the top of the agenda and there is a wide range. Teacup's own bagged blends of cute, quirky labels to have in or take home with you. Popular choice from the menu is Blue Sky Earl Grey & Cheeky Moo Pie - such a lifting, taste sensation and not over facing, it's no surprise. The little egg timer for brewing your tea was a cool little touch - apparently quite common but I've not seen it before. I'm going to make this place, that's in my favourite area of Manchester, a regular Friday treat. Might have to try a mini scone with clotted cream next visit :) The lunch meeting at Teacup concluded with Kevin urging me to start writing reviews on Yelp. The Teacup was the natural choice for my inaugural review.
Another Yelp mystery - how have I not reviewed Teacup before? I guess when you can use a coffee shop (or tea) as your office you can get a bit spoilt (also fat) and forget where you spent a lovely morning. Well I did just that at Teacup last week and on a sunny day in May, even sweeter! What was also sweet was the fantastic jam that accompanied my scone! I had one of those huge heart shaped scones that was well baked and didn't fall apart on touch. It came alongside some lovely cream and strawberry jam and I had it with a pot of breakfast tea. The tea was equally as nice and they do a range of flavours and options - so if you're a tea guy or gal over a coffee fiend then add this place to your list. I was lucky enough to get a seat outside and it was warm enough to do so - although there are only 3 tables outside!
Teacup is a wonderful little spot in the heart of the Northern Quarter. Whether your looking for some breakfast, a beverage or a slab of cake - this place has it all and hits the spot every time. Today I opted for the poached eggs on sour bread and I won't lie, I haven't seen yolks that orange I think ever. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the sour bread toast was buttery, crispy and just wonderful. I would also recommend the eggs royale or benedict here - you get TONS of salmon/ham and both are thoroughly enjoyable. Lastly, the cake, THE CAKE. You'd be mad not to grab a slice so forget about your diet and do it!
Disappointing cake and service here today. We strolled in after walking through the Makers Market this afternoon and were seated quickly before being presented with menus. We ordered and settled in to wait. And wait. And wait. 30 minutes later we asked for our tea, seeing as tables near us (seated after us) had already received their beverages and food. Tea and beer was brought, except the beer was both warm and not the one asked for. By this point we just accepted it because at least we had something to drink! So then we waited some more and eventually asked another server about our cake. We had ordered a Victoria sponge, a honeycomb brownie concoction and a slice of rainbow cake. When these eventually arrived with her apologies the ice cream with the brownie had melted, the Victoria sponge was actually one large cake sliced in half so had no crust to protect from the jam and cream in the middle, meaning the whole thing was soggy and dense, and the rainbow cake was tasteless (although aestheticly pleasing). When we asked for the bill we were asked if we wanted a box to take home the leftover rainbow cake as I could only eat a few mouthfuls, but to be honest it was so bland I refused. And all this (three drinks and three cakes with a 40 minute wait) for £26. I will point out that the restaurant was probably about 4/5ths full but had PLENTY of waiting staff available... In fact I couldn't understand why so many people were required for a place of this size! There really was no reason for the lazy service that I could see. Two stars then. One star for the tea which was proper (good loose leaf with a triple egg timer and instructions on how to get the right brew) and one star because I was seated near the kitchen and could see the lovely lunch food they were serving: it was clean, professional and looked great. I hope those diners had a better time than we did and the rest of the food was more substance to match the style.
Been here on numerous occasions because they have outdoor seating on the pavement, which is really nice on a sunny day. Although there are only a few so you sort of have to keep your eye out until someone moves. Nice little cafe in the Northern Quarter with plenty of tables inside. I've only eaten here once- had an incredible asparagus salad with poached egg from the specials. Usually just come here for a cup of tea, which is their speciality. They have all sorts of flavours of tea- I can't drink caffeine anymore so I had the rosebud tea which is really nice- comes with a fancy egg timer so you know when it's brewed- although I'm not exactly patient! If you order a slice of cake they are HUGE mammoth size slices so order between 2 of you (or 3). They also serve wine, should you wish to have an alcoholic refreshment. All in all a very cute cafe and a lunchtime staple in the NQ.
Quirky, though somehow exactly what I expected in this Northern Quarter stalwart. A modern building made to look like its been here forever, lots of mismatched furniture and 'shabby chic' which I'm not the biggest fan of. A good selection of teas available, the 'house' tea is very nice, and helped to wash down a slab of rainbow cake. And I really mean slab, it was huge, I've seen smaller house bricks! I thought it was a bit pricey for a piece of cake at £5, but in reality its amazing value on the basis that it would feed a family of 4 for week!! Patchy service standards, we were served by 5 different people! I also found the seating very uncomfortable. Wifi is available.
This place is owned by Mr.Scuff who if you have never heard of is the friendliest DJ in the world who also loves pies and tea. It is perhaps not surprising then that he opened up a café in the Northern Quarter such as the one he did. Cup is a great café that sells a wide range of pies, cakes and pastries all for really decent prices. There is also a wide range of egg cups for sale here that admittedly are quite pricey but are mostly antiques or collectibles. Anything that Mr.Scruff puts his hands to seems to be a success and this place is no exception. It would be unquestionable that a DJ who promotes caring for each other, giving one another a hug and all round niceness would employ bad staff so Cup is full of helpful staff that can advise you on which pie variety or tea flavour you might like to give a go. Get yourself a newspaper, prepare too eat great food and try to avoid spending way too much on one of the egg cups for grabs.
I have to agree with reviewer Penny: really wanted to rate this place higher but the fact is, it's not worthy. I'm not a local so I don't know of anywhere better to get tea and cake. It certainly has cool people vibes - 90% off the men in there were bearded, need I say more? Anyhoo, Teacup got off to a strong start with the food, delicious pie and mash although too light on the feta. My mate's beans on toast looked immense, literally and metaphorically. Hibiscus tea was refreshing and light. And they refilled us for free. Less strong was my £5 slice of 'lemon licious' cake - more lemon dry-as-anything. Although to be fair my companion's gluten free choc cake was gorgeous and I experienced terrible food envy. Another negative was the fact there was no heating on 21 November. It was close to freezing outside, and we were sitting there in our coats. For the relatively pricey food I expect central heating, dammit. And that, my friend, just cost you a star.
Teacup is one of the more popular places in Manchester, based on Yelp reviews and even being nominated and winning awards ; I hate to be Simon Cowell, but do they deserve it? It's a No from me. The store itself, is not the nicest place and is over 2 levels, with a small case of stairs separating both sides, so it is a big store on 2 seperate Manchester side-streets. I don't really think it is a nice store, it isn't the brightest or most modern of stores, and is filled with posters dedicated to "Mr Scruff" and in my opinion that just makes me feel put off the place, it makes me feel like staff stretch their armpits and put their hands all over my food, unwashed, I know it doesn't happen but if it is owned by Mr Scruff.. it wouldn't surprise me! The menu here is poor, they is a satisfactory menu options but they do not do standard beans, what I dislike and if you do want their "special" beans it could cost £3.50, which is something else to add to Teacup's expensive pricing. If I remember correctly my Gingerbread Latte was £3.90 and my flourless chocolate cake was £5 and for the quality, is just daylight robbery. My friend ordered an Americano, and she did not order this, she just ordered a simple coffee with milk, but not a latte, she doesn't like strong coffees and that is just what it was. I didn't like my latte too, the gingerbread flavouring was slightly overpowering and it tasted sickly and like it could be out of date, as I couldn't finish it as it left me feeling quite bad, like they was something wrong with it. Service here is pretty slow too, even for a cake what is ready made and right in front of me, and I was waiting for a while just for my latte, and then for my cake. I did enjoy my flourless chocolate cake last time, and I did find the presentation to be very good but the cake this time was the opposite, although they was slight flaws in my previous visit, it wasn't awful but today it was - It was far too chocolatey for my liking, and they didn't need to add this to make it nice, without flour as I know some people who make great flourless chocolate cake, and it isn't like this, it isn't too chocolaty! The clotted cream and raspberry are nice additions but I would prefer something in the cake rather than this as it just make an already sickly cake, more sickly. The staff here are not great too, they seem more about the sale and thinking they are all-knowing, rather than handing me a dietary book (which I'm sure they have as I've seen it before) or explaining certain dishes in detail, rather than trying to sell the more expensive things (The £5 chocolate cake) and passing it out to be "the best", "the nicest", "the only gluten free" thing on the menu which is worse having, and in all honesty if that is correct, they is nothing gluten free on the menu worth having. Due to issues with the store design, layout, food, coffee and pricing, I feel this place does not deserve its' success and really needs to improve and is the perfect example of a one star establishment.
my friends were craving something sweet after our late lunch & wanted to find a cake shop in northern quarter then we landed here! the atmosphere inside was very mellow & somewhat calm/regular cafe vibe! we seated ourselves at a table & a worker promptly supplied us with more menus & told us come up to the counter when we were ready to order! we looked at the desserts on the counter as well but decided on scones! they also ordered tea along with their scones since that's the proper way to do it haha! when they ordered, the worker put it in as cream tea which was like a bundle of scone/tea which did save them a bit of money! however, after we finished ordering, we were notified that they were out of scones & asked if we wanted to wait 20-25 minutes for the new batch--which we did since we had time (we arrived around 4pm & they close at 6pm). they did ask if we wanted our teas now or later & after they brought of my friend's teas, the worker asked if i wanted another cup so i could share the teas with my friends which was kind of them to ask! once the scones were out & served, i came to the late decision of wanting one for myself as well, however, when i ordered, they said they were all sold out again (a man had bought them all)!! it was disappointing but my friends gave me a few bites of theirs & shared their tea with me;; overall, it was a nice atmosphere, not too crowded or loud--nice place to catch up with friends or to study! i wished they could have saved/planned their quantity a bit better though! it would've been nice to have tried scones for the first time properly! read more

FIVE STARS REINSTATED. Oh yes. After a brief lovers' tiff, Teacup and I reignited our passion with aplomb after I visited twice recently. What a difference a holiday makes! Or rather, what a difference their effort makes. The entire back area of the space has opened up to create a whole new dining experience. What even is that. Brilliance, that's what it is. What looks like something beyond what you'd get at Room or Australasia in the nouveau cuisine stakes is brought to casual dining, in a casual environment at thoroughly casual prices. I've had some utterly lovely meetings and social experiences in here recently and its reclaimed its crown as Norther Quarter Big Daddy. No, wait. There are too many contenders to that crown. Let me get my Game of Thrones geek on. You know how in the second book there are seven folks claiming themselves king? If you don't, seriously, get involved. Anyway, Teacup feels like one of the more rightful contenders. Kind of like a Stannis Baratheon. Willing to experiment with new things. Determined and full of effort. Takes things seriously. Might have had a dip in popularity at some point, but heck, that does not keep a rightful king down. Teacup has totes re-stolen my heart. You know how quite a few Yelp reviews complain about certain things? Particularly Claire I's whereby the manager treated her meanly - well, fear no more. The manager she mentioned is gawn. In his place is an environment that feels so welcoming and friendly that it's like going into your best friend's front room for a brew. Their coffee is still one of the finest blends in all NQdom. It's time to wipe the slate clean. I for one cannot WAIT to taste this new evening menu. Supper and a cuppa, yes PLEASE! read more
If you're in the Northern Quarter and you're looking for somewhere for tea and cake, look no further than Teacup. It's easy to find, on Thomas St, in the heart of the NQ and you can't miss either the 'Cake or No Cake' sign outside or the huge queue of people waiting to get inside. Teacup Kitchen is always busy - so make sure you time it right when you visit. I've been here loads of times, when i've been lucky enough to get a table, for tea, cake, hot chocolate, coffee and it's always been great. The cake is to die for here - especially the flourless chocolate cake... WOW! I haven't eaten from their main menu yet - but it's high up on my list to try!! read more

I thought it was a bit pricey for a piece of cake at £5, but in reality its amazing value on the basis that it would feed a family of 4 for week!! This place is owned by Mr.Scuff who if you have never heard of is the friendliest DJ in the world who also loves pies and tea. It is perhaps not surprising then that he opened up a café in the Northern Quarter such as the one he did. Cup is a great café that sells a wide range of pies, cakes and pastries all for really decent prices. There is also a wide range of egg cups for sale here that admittedly are quite pricey but are mostly antiques or collectibles. Anything that Mr.Scruff puts his hands to seems to be a success and this place is no exception. It would be unquestionable that a DJ who promotes caring for each other, giving one another a hug and all round niceness would employ bad staff so Cup is full of helpful staff that can advise you on which pie variety or tea flavour you might like to give a go. Get yourself a newspaper, prepare too eat great food and try to avoid spending way too much on one of the egg cups for grabs. read more
I have to agree with reviewer Penny: really wanted to rate this place higher but the fact is, it's not worthy. I'm not a local so I don't know of anywhere better to get tea and cake. It certainly has cool people vibes - 90% off the men in there were bearded, need I say more? Anyhoo, Teacup got off to a strong start with the food, delicious pie and mash although too light on the feta. My mate's beans on toast looked immense, literally and metaphorically. Hibiscus tea was refreshing and light. And they refilled us for free. Less strong was my £5 slice of 'lemon licious' cake - more lemon dry-as-anything. Although to be fair my companion's gluten free choc cake was gorgeous and I experienced terrible food envy. Another negative was the fact there was no heating on 21 November. It was close to freezing outside, and we were sitting there in our coats. For the relatively pricey food I expect central heating, dammit. And that, my friend, just cost you a star. read more

Teacup is one of the more popular places in Manchester, based on Yelp reviews and even being nominated and winning awards ; I hate to be Simon Cowell, but do they deserve it? It's a No from me. The store itself, is not the nicest place and is over 2 levels, with a small case of stairs separating both sides, so it is a big store on 2 seperate Manchester side-streets. I don't really think it is a nice store, it isn't the brightest or most modern of stores, and is filled with posters dedicated to "Mr Scruff" and in my opinion that just makes me feel put off the place, it makes me feel like staff stretch their armpits and put their hands all over my food, unwashed, I know it doesn't happen but if it is owned by Mr Scruff.. it wouldn't surprise me! The menu here is poor, they is a satisfactory menu options but they do not do standard beans, what I dislike and if you do want their "special" beans it could cost £3.50, which is something else to add to Teacup's expensive pricing. If I remember correctly my Gingerbread Latte was £3.90 and my flourless chocolate cake was £5 and for the quality, is just daylight robbery. My friend ordered an Americano, and she did not order this, she just ordered a simple coffee with milk, but not a latte, she doesn't like strong coffees and that is just what it was. I didn't like my latte too, the gingerbread flavouring was slightly overpowering and it tasted sickly and like it could be out of date, as I couldn't finish it as it left me feeling quite bad, like they was something wrong with it. Service here is pretty slow too, even for a cake what is ready made and right in front of me, and I was waiting for a while just for my latte, and then for my cake. I did enjoy my flourless chocolate cake last time, and I did find the presentation to be very good but the cake this time was the opposite, although they was slight flaws in my previous visit, it wasn't awful but today it was - It was far too chocolatey for my liking, and they didn't need to add this to make it nice, without flour as I know some people who make great flourless chocolate cake, and it isn't like this, it isn't too chocolaty! The clotted cream and raspberry are nice additions but I would prefer something in the cake rather than this as it just make an already sickly cake, more sickly. The staff here are not great too, they seem more about the sale and thinking they are all-knowing, rather than handing me a dietary book (which I'm sure they have as I've seen it before) or explaining certain dishes in detail, rather than trying to sell the more expensive things (The £5 chocolate cake) and passing it out to be "the best", "the nicest", "the only gluten free" thing on the menu which is worse having, and in all honesty if that is correct, they is nothing gluten free on the menu worth having. Due to issues with the store design, layout, food, coffee and pricing, I feel this place does not deserve its' success and really needs to improve and is the perfect example of a one star establishment. read more

Any place that has a framed sign by the door saying 'Tea Revives You' is my kind of place. Continuing my quest for the perfect cup of green tea, this had to be on my list. Quite a large seated area with quaint little checked table clothes, but that is about as kitsch as this place goes, with t-shirts em-blazed with 'a balanced diet is a cake in each hand' worn by the staff and awesome tea towels with 'champion brew technician' on them, I think I had died and gone to tea heaven. There is a great range of loose teas available here, all with fabulous thirst quenching descriptions, some of the teas currently being offered are an Organic White Peony, Heart of Love Blooming Flower Tea, Darjeeling Second Flush and as I was on a green tea mission, I ordered the Organic Jade Sword Green Tea. It arrived, not in a cup or a simple pot, but was delivered to my table was a pot full of hot water and the green tea leaves, a second smaller empty pot, a small glass cup and a 3 in 1 egg timer. But dont be scared, my server came with instructions. When the first egg timer finishes, its time to pour the hot water into the 2nd pot, when the 2nd egg timer finishes its time to pour the water into your little glass cup. And the 3rd egg timer . . umm I confess, I lost count so just drank the tea, which was superb and just the right temperature, maybe thats what the 3rd egg timer was for? I was only here to sample the teas, but I enviously gazed at some of the dishes being eaten by fellow diners, there is a great menu covering breakfast, afternoon teas and dinner with a menu for meatballs all on its own and they had the most amazing pastries lined up on the counter. i have to come back, this time with an emptier bladder and empty stomach! read more
Came here with a friend on a rare hot day in Manchester for some lunch and a catch up! The staff were so friendly and helpful right from the start and we bagged a sweet spot in the sun outside We ordered sandwiches on ciabatta, my friend getting the cheesey option whilst I plumped for ham hock and cheese both coming with side salads. Orders for food and drink were taken quickly and the waitress was so lovely! Food came quicker than expected with drinks topped up and sorted at quick speed! Although its not the cheapest lunch option at £6.50 a sandwich it is worth it for a treat :) read more
We stumbled across this place after checking a few yelp reviews for somewhere in the Northern Quarter that did a good cake selection. As soon as I heard it was owned by Mr Scruff and dubbed as 'cake, tea and music', I was sold. The cake did not disappoint!! Much like Home Sweet Home, the cakes are ridiculously huge and range from the traditional to the multi-coloured crazy (although not quite as insane as the Home Sweet Home varieties which can be a bit too much to handle). The selection was fairly extensive, and between us we settled on carrot and coconut, pistachio, and an amazing heart shaped scone. All of them were delicious (yup, I helped finish them all!), but I have to say my carrot cake topped the table. We were fortunate enough to be sitting right in front of the kitchen as well, and although we only popped in for a mid-afternoon snack, the food coming out the kitchen and the care shown by the kitchen staff would definitely encourage me to return for something more substantial. Not much of a tea drinker, I didn't care much for their selection, but was assured it was impressive. Instead we went for some smoothies and milkshakes (just what you need to warm up in November) which were pretty decent, but nothing special. The staff were really friendly, and the place generally had an enjoyable, relaxed atmosphere. I did come away thinking the 3rd item (the music) hadn't left any lasting memories, so deduced it can't have been that good. A little disappointing from the establishment owned by Mr Scruff, but a minor annoyance more than made up for by a most delicious slice of cake. read more
Teacup is everything you want from a café and more. Varied and interesting menu, perfect cup of coffee and friendly, well informed staff. As soon as I walked through the door I was invited to see the menu and had my order taken quickly. I love the artwork that fills the space, some of which has been made my Mr Scruff himself. I was very tempted to make an art purchase... and eat pretty much everything on the menu as it all sounded amazing. I managed to resist, finished my latte, and asked for the bill. At £2.90 for a latte Teacup is slightly more expensive than some of the other options you have around the northern quarter, but the ambiance and quality you get here more than make up for that. I recommend this place for coffee, breakfast or a huge slabs of cake. Lovely! read more
Maybe it's because it's January and everyone has spent all their money on Christmas and is waiting for pay day, but wandering around the Northern Quarter today looking for somewhere to have lunch we were amazed at how empty everywhere was. Then we had the thought to try Teacup because whenever we've wandered past before people have been queueing to get in. Well, there was no queue today but it was pretty much the only place we saw which was full. I'd not appreciated before how big the place is - it goes back a long way, and is decorated in a quirky way with old German school materials hanging from the wall out back. Staff were friendly and helpful, and we went with sandwiches (hummus and falafel for Sparky, smoked tomato and chicken for me). Sparky then had a traditional tea whilst I branched out with a black lychee which was smooth and sweet and really tasted of lychees (it's a bug bear of mine when teas smell nice but taste awful; this definitely did not fall into that category!). It also seems nowadays that everywhere doing tea brings you the egg timers for brewing, but it was nice to actually get a recommendation about how long to leave our teas for - and a recommendation which was actually spot on. TL;DR: Good food, great tea, good service - but be prepared for it to be busy. read more

I'd heard wonderful things about this place so of course was excited to finally visited. I found the selection of cakes on display amazing and very quickly ordered a slice. My friends ordered a green tea and a smoothie of sorts. The cake portion was wicked - it was huge and could easily be shared with another one or two people. I was quite disappointed that it was rather stale - probably from being on display for the last few days, particularly in the hot weather. I mentioned this to the staff who apologised and wiped it off the bill. I didn't pay for the cake and the waitress was very helpful, so overall I would visit again but perhaps be sure to select a cake that still appeared quite fresh on the display. The servers were very kind, the cake was aesthetically pleasing and I look forward to giving it another go and seeing if they truly do taste as good as they look! read more

One of the most popular Breakfast Cafe in Manchester, you should see the queue on weekends! It is a typical Northern Quarter hippie cafe populated by the hipsters. They have a large selection of tea right from Assam to Earl Grey and a good range of desserts and sandwiches to choose from. I personally like their carrot cake but feel its a bit over priced for its worth! read more

This cafe is owned by Mr Scruff and is great to shop in, to have a cup of one of his specially blended fair trade teas (£1.20) and a cake, or go all out and have pie and mash and mushy peas. Or onion soup with rye bread. MMMMM. The place is quite big and the atmosphere is really chilled- students with their lap tops (there is free wifi) with tunes playing quietly and teapots to purchase, you must spend an afternoon in here. There is even a record shop on sight. Everything Mr Scruff loves, you will love. The decor is bright and welcoming, the sort of place which will draw you in and keep you coming back for more. We decided to give Teacup a try on Saturday Morning, we got there around 10:30am as we was meeting friends there, we have walked passed numerous times and always seen a long queue outside which must mean its good! Luckily we didn't have to queue and was straight in and was greeted by a lovely girl, i asked if we could sit at the back on the upper section but she said it was closed as there wasn't enough staff in, i thought ok but seemed a bit silly, we got a table right in the middle of the lower section though, it was already buzzing with people, a few minutes after we had sat down, the same girl started showing people to the upper section though the lower section was quite busy though kinda thought why she couldn't take us up there? Anyway we looked through the cool menus with a page for each section one for cakes one for the teas and one for breakfast items etc, its a kinda cool menu with loads of yummy breakfast items to choose from, when we was looking through the menu the lovely girl asked if we would like water so she bought us a jug of ice cold water and 4 tumblers, a nice little touch whilst still deciding what to have. This place is almost famous or maybe famous I'm not sure for its cakes, there is a selection of them on show on top of the bar near to where we was sat, they all looked devine!!! they had lemon meringues, carrot cake, red velvet cake and numerous others, i couldn't take my eyes off the carrot cake though, so i ordered a piece of that, at £4 a slice though its a tad expensive and a little dry but it was still really nice, i also ordered a latte which was really good! They also do a great selection of teas obviously due to its name, our friend ordered a tea which comes with a sand timer to know when you're tea is ready, kinda cool and never seen that before. I can understand why this place is so popular, its cool atmosphere and cool customers make this place stand out, and the breakfasts look amazing!!! obviously i will be back to try those out! The whole place looks great and I've never seen it quiet so its true this place ROCKS! read more

A very lovely place with a great choice of tea, perfect for tea lovers like me, veggie brekkie is really good, however little disappointment with the cakes, had a rainbow and victoria's sponge and both were too dry :( defenetly a few days old.. A part from that all good, only one waiter wasn't very smiling, a little smile can make the experience better, rest of the staff nothing to say! read more

One of my favourite discoveries on my holiday to the UK. At the beginning of an unexpected free day in Manchester on a flying visit, I found an article that recommended Teacup as one of the cities attractions. When on our walk later in the day we stumbled upon it we decided to have lunch there and aren't I glad we did! The atmosphere and style was eclectic and open, the staff very friendly and lovely and the food and tea was some of the best we'd had in the UK. If you are going with friends make sure you all get a different cake so you can sample as much of the wonderful range as possible! The only thing that could make this place better is opening another location in Melbourne, Australia. We'd love to have you!! read more

Came here 2 weekends ago with my boyfriend and his friend. We're not from the area or even the same country (well, the bf's friend is. He and I are not, though) so I had researched some places to come by once we were in Manchester. We decided to come here and we were quite pleased with our choice. Since we came on a Saturday, there was a bit of a queue to be seated. We did not have to wait terribly long, though, and there were even little cups of tea and pieces of cake for us to nibble on as we waited. Once seated, we perused their pretty extensive menu of teas and vittles. Their pastries change on a daily basis, so what we had that particular day may not be available on any other given day. I chose a hot chocolate for myself and a slice of their Victorian sponge cake, which also came with a generous scoop of clotted cream. Everything was quite tasty, but the reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 was because I thought my hot chocolate could have been a little sweeter and the cake slices that we got were a bit on the dry side. I'd recommend people to stop by if you happen to be in the area. read more
