Very friendly ostess took my order and I had my food in less than 15 minutes (this was after the breakfast/brunch rush so they weren't super busy). I got the taco truck fries which while very spicy & garlicky were amazing. I also got the Eggs in Purgatory whoch were out of this world amazing. Ironically the coffee machine was broken but my spirit wasn't! Plus I don't really like coffee anyway so it didn't matter. One Sunday I went up as I could get there for opening time and decided to cross it off my list. When I got there it was already open so that was a little confusing ... but it was RAMMED. Luckily, I was going on my own so could easily be sat at the window, which was a great view, and easily got served. So many people came in after me and couldn't be seated without a reservation. But the host was very lovely and gracious and people understood. Food wise I went for the shakshuka, it sounded nice, and it really was ... it was also EXTREMELY hot because it was served in cast iron and kept its heat. It was delicious. The toast was crispy, the tomatoes were tasty, chickpeas were crunchy and a nice addition, The added sausage was very delicious, the eggs were good although I would have preferred if they had some runny yolk but its almost impossible to get that with baked eggs. At 11 am on a Saturday, they weren't too packed and even if they were this place is huge so there is plenty of room to sit down and enjoy! What I ordered: I got a cappuccino and a falafel salad. The cappuccino was huge! The salad was filling and came w hummus, guacamole, and a veggie mix! I loved it! Prices were reasonable for what you get! I got their chicken tenders dish that came with fries, gravy, and slaw. It also came with a barbecue (I think it was barbecue) sauce. I was genuinely surprised as most brunch places I've been to never really serve any of their meals with sides (it's usually extra) so to have slaw and fries with this meal reminded me of how the food is back in America. The service was quick and after ordering, my food came soon after. I enjoyed the gravy more than the barbecue sauce. It had a bit of a sweet taste to it which works well with the chicken (I did find it a bit salty). The portion size was good for the price. I'm not too much of a fan of sweet things but I saw that they had pancakes and would try that next time I check this place out!

I just got back from a tasty lunch at Gemini, or Dirty Gem's, as myself and Curly Friend call it…read more Dirty Gem's is the absolute epitome of what you shouldn't be eating; fried sausages, salty chips, piles of beans and 'meat' pies. And the best bacon you'll ever have. I have a lot of love for this little greasy spoon. There's no pretence here, amongst the worn-out vinyl cafeteria tables and sticky HP sauce bottles. It's a totally honest caff that serves greasy nosh at low prices. My favourite, the guilty pleasure bacon, sausage, chips and beans, will set you back a mere £4 and keep you full up long into the afternoon. Curly Friend always favours a fried egg over the sausages, and though I am not a fan of fried eggs, they always seem to be pretty perfect; plenty of runny yolk to dip your chips in. There's plenty here for those who don't want a classic bean/chip/meat combo. You can grab a pizza or pasta dish for around £4. Be warned though; they rarely actually have these to hand, and you could end up waiting awhile for your tuna pasta. The staff here are brusque, verging on incompetent and pretty unhelpful. But that doesn't matter, because Gem's is all about honesty and being down to earth. I don't think I'd want an over-attentive waitress pandering to my needs; I've got my sausages, I'm fine thanks! As well as a great array of food, Gem's offers a great hot drink menu, with their hot chocolate being a firm favourite, and the coffee erring on the right side of strong. In my student radio days, I had a 10am Monday slot with Shambolic Friend. We'd meet at 9 every Monday at Gem's to plan the show ahead over a plate of cheese on toast. These days I try and make a lunch date with Curly Friend, usually spent bitching and gossiping. Gem's is a great place to meet friends and eat greasy, yet wholly satisyfing, grub.

This place should by no means be confused with Gemini Takeaway which is located at the other side of the Whitworth Park entrance - they are not affiliated. Obviously different groups have different pet names for their favourite and least favourite establishments, but unlike Rebecca my group called the takeaway 'Dirty Gemini'. For us, Gemini Café was anything but dirty. It was part of our weekly ritual - more so than anything else, including lectures. Every Sunday at midday for two years we would head down to Gemini Café for brunch. I usually spent between £3 and £4 for their veggie breakfast and a large latte. Other dishes I have sampled include jacket potatoes with various fillings, tuna sandwiches (cheaper than buying a can of tuna and making a sandwich) and pizza. I've never been disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I've never been thrilled either, but the food has always been tasty and importantly for a hungover student or hungry builder, filling. The staff were always shouting at each other and shouting out order numbers to builders who were obliviously reading the Sun or staring out of the window. There was a very high staff turnover, therefore no-one really seemed to know what they were doing. However, to say that there were sometimes up to 15 of us who would meet for brunch, we always got what we ordered and it was always hot. I wish I was a student again, I miss Gemini.

While bopping along to the background music and working on my laptop, I was informed that Leaf would close early at 19h instead of 20h, so I seized the opportunity to order dinner as well: the jerk lamb rump, and an order of jasmine pearl tea. The waiter helped me verify that the lamb was free of dairy, and soon I was chowing down on succulent roast lamb and garlicky roast beans. The mango jam was a perfect accompaniment to the meat, but I found the coconut/coriander rice too mushy to my taste. It helped me to imagine them as mashed potatoes instead, haha. The tea was sensuously fragrant, and I welcomed the scented fog clouding my glasses. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I might return for brunch or tea - Leaf is truly a serene, wonderful establishment.

I've been converted .. any time I can get into Manchester first 8am I make sure to head to moose for breakfast. Not only do they do a great coffee .. but their Canadian/American style breakfasts are the best I've had. The service is always exceptional and the place is doing so well with more and more places opening up and it makes me so happy. The servers are always so nice, and the food is always so good .. I usually go for the grande bouche (French toast with bacon) or veggie version (no bacon) and it is to die for. You get 2 large brioche french toasts and a very generous serving of real maple syrup and I can't get enough. I usually put some syrup in my coffee and Ooof. The portion is great ... I'm content after eating there .. not hungry and not uncomfortably full so it's just perfect and today we had 3 drinks and 3 meals for just under £10 each ... you can't grumble at that at all. We went for breakfast and the selection was familiar but pleasantly different. With selections of classic breakfasts which could be Americanised with Texas toast for e.g. (I didn't see any grits which I'd love to see their take on). I had the Eggs Benedict with Ham Hock, it's one of those dishes which is a great judge of a place as it only has a few ingredients any one of which can disappoint. Alabama's was spot on. In fact I'm thinking that the ham hock possibly works better than streak bacon which I hate myself for saying, but it's less salty and gives it a more rustic homey feel. Which I really enjoyed. I love my coffee and I can say their flat white was spot on for me. The staff seem great here as well, very welcoming and friendly, offering to give suggestions or anwser any questions about the food. There aren't a huge number of places even in the city centre where I can guarantee a good breakfast and a great coffee in the same spot. I'm glad to have found another to add to my list.
