Tea for 2, muffin sandwiches, scones, panacotta , tart and cake for £15
Penny L.

Popping in for tea and sarnies is something I have never done before.. For £15 per person we settled on the tea for two.which was quite fitting for this quaint tearoomy place. I was first served by cherry tea in a beautiful cute teapot...however most of it ended on the table. Pretty but impractical as the dried herbs n stuff were getting stuck in the spout. So I asked for another bigger and practical tea pot..which was better... When the tiered trays arrived I thought it didn't look much but this turned out to be deceptively filling. The sandwiches were ham, brie and cranberry and goatscheese..these were tasty but forgettable..the next layer of home made scones with clotted cream and jam were amazing though.. next layer was a white chocolate panacotta and cake...with blueberries mm which were so rich and divine..to finish was a gorgeous chocolate guiness cake which was too much ..I was really impressed with everything, I would definitely bring my mum here when she visits :)

Nom Nom Nom. I've been trying to find an excuse to visit Sugar Junction and I think I've subconsciously been stopping myself as I knew I wouldn't be just getting coffee. Eventually I caved in and headed on down eagerly anticipating the cake-y goodness that awaited me, and cake-y goodness I received! A huge slice of Jaffa Cake, which was great, perfectly partnered by a lovely Flat White (I know way to be different Matt). All in all, Sugar Junction is fantastic, the girls on staff were friendly and attentive and there was an overall positive vibe in this place. Really cute decor and cups that you'd get in Grandma's Kitchen, Sugar Junctions offers a different coffee shop/cafe feel to the others in NQ and I love it!

Afternoon tea!

I think SJ might win my Most Updates Ever award for 2011. I just had to mention the afternoon tea before the year came to a close... the festive version that is. Talk about being plied with a smorgasboard of amazing stuff. Stilton and walnut scones, and room temperature butter to slather over them; finger sandwiches of turkey and stuffing, Wensleydale and cranberry, smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill; brie and cranberry tartlets, egg nog cupcakes, Christmassy chocolate truffles, wholeweat sweet scones with amazing strawberry jam and clotted cream; mince pies and a hot mulled Pimms punch on arrival in one of their famous teacups, plus tea of your choice, including very festive options like spiced orange, which I went for and thoroughly enjoyed. Colour us stuffed, each person ends up eating about ten items! This was a great way to get into the Christmas spirit before the craziness began, and while we were there Sugar Junction was being used for everything from romantic dates to office parties. There's something for everyone here and they did an exceptional job of making sure we had everything we needed - friendly as always. Hugs and festive frolics at Christmas at one of Manchester's nicest tea rooms, what's not to love? Beyond impressed.

A lovely little tea shop in Manchester's booming northern quarter. Great quality teas and food with polite and friendly service. They use a wonderful eclectic mix of old ladies bone china crockery including huge teapots. I had a bacon sandwich and a pot of breakfast tea. It was totally delicious. I'll definitely go back, however it's not somewhere that I'd wait a long time for if there's a queue.

The tea, and one of those sticky toffee delicious amazing nommy things!

The absolute epitome of a vintage English tea room! (You can tell it's perfectly English as there were Japanese girls sitting eating cupcakes and looking in awe, and apparently they get Americans in taking photos a lot!) The décor is lovely, all floral sofas, regal old fashioned dining chairs, and 1940's models on the wall, accompanied by 1940's and 50's music. They have an extensive tea menu, which is one thing I'm always happy to see! Tea is served in pretty vintage china teapots and cups, and their range of freshly baked cakes and treats are also served on vintage china plates, which apparently you can also hire out! I had a pot of Sugar Junction English Afternoon Tea, which at over £3 for a pot for one might sound quite steep, but when you realise that it's quite a large teapot, and you get as many free hot water refills as you like, you realise it's pretty good value! I also had one of the delicious looking sticky toffee cakes, which at first glance I thought were nice looking, but would be spongey, wheras I got one and it was delicious moist cakey toffee om-nom-nom-ness! The tea itself was also delicious! The staff were friendly and pleasant, and happy to chat. They made me feel very welcome :) It was also nice to find somewhere with a proper coat-and-hat stand, so I could hang my hat and coat up for once instead of shoving them on the back of my chair and on another seat, or squashing them under a table etc. I will definitely return, if anything just to try out some of those other amazing sounding teas, and prowl around their lovely sweet treats! Bravo!

Think they'd notice if I stole that gramophone?

The tea here is lovely, much like teacup it is a tad over priced but I at least feel that this place is less cramped for space. The English breakfast tea is lovely toward the halfway mark but really needs more leaves in the pot to make it strong enough for a full pot, this is where the tea cup method of 2 pots actually works better. The food is delicious. I had cream and jam scones and it was delightful and I felt very British. It was like eating at my grans house and I know that's the style they are going for. They nailed it, some places over compensate for quirky purposes, this place gets the feel down to a tea ;) All in all, I can imagine it's a lovely place to go for a lunch date with a special someone :)

I like Sugar Junction though I don't come here that often. There's such a choice of tea/cake selling places in the NQ, and generally in the city centre, I tend to get stuck in a habit of where I go. Sugar Junction is not one of my habitual places but usually come a few times a year. Today's visit was after watching rugby, and we needed to cheer ourselves up after a really disappointing performance and result. My friend went for a glass of wine and sandwich. I forget how much she paid and what was in the sandwich (sorry, not much use as a review is it) but she enjoyed it so that was the main thing. I went for the cream tea and chose a pot of the Elderflower Tea. The scones were warm (mmmmm!) and were very nice. Having spent a few childhood holidays in Devon, I always put cream on before the jam and feel that is the only way to enjoy a cream tea. The Elderflower Tea was a perfect accompaniment - not too heavy with a subtle taste. The cost was £6.95 which was really good value, especially as they top up the tea for free. Highly recommend a visit here if you haven't been.

Macaroni cheese and Elderflower Tea make a beautiful combination in Sugar Junction.

I visited Sugar Junction for the first time yesterday and I want to go back today. In fact, I want to go back every single day for the rest of my life. This cafe has the feel of your grandma's living room and I mean this in the very best way; cosy, surrounded by an assortment of antiques and oh so very much at home. (The staff also play grandmother very well by spoiling you absolutely rotten.) The menu is crammed with hearty homemade meals and there is such a variety of tea that one is bound to tickle your taste buds. This place has rocketed to the top of my favourites list and I think I could quite happily lose entire days in here. The eclectic assortment of furniture and crockery made me feel like I had been whisked away to the tea party in Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' - though thankfully the Mad Hatter was nowhere to be seen. Having said that, it is possible that he had some influence in the menu because the kind prices and generous portions are mind-bogglingly refreshing in Manchester's somewhat overpriced Northern Quarter.

The Mediterranean panini and Mexican Chill Bean Wrap. All come with sweet potato fries &slaw
Winnie H.

The feeling I had for Sugar Junction is similar to Home Sweet Home. I heard the fame first and then go to taste them. Unfortunately, they both are kind of letting me down a little bit. I heard how much people like about Sugar Junction for quite some time. We decided to go for dinner for a friend's birthday on a late summer evening. We ordered the Mediterranean Panini and a Mexican wrap with an Oreo milkshake and an Americano. All food came with sweet potato fries and coleslaws. The bread of the Mediterranean Panini was just hard as stone and I only had half of it. The Mexican wrap was alright. We also had a three cake platter for dessert. Overall, I have to say it's a very average quality food and cakes. It's a homey place for the atmosphere and the food quality.

Tea and scone
Ying L.

I have heard great things about this place and wanted to like it. The ambience and atmosphere of the place is great with the chandeliers, old style decor around the place and plenty of tea on the shelves. The clientelle was mixed as people were stopping by for morning tea. I ordered some peach tea and a scone as I only needed something to tie me over as I was having a late lunch. The tea was delicious and the scone seemed freshly made and was still hot as the clotted cream melted into the scone. Despite this is it was delicious. I was disappointed with the cup as I could barely get my fingers in it to hold it properly, perhaps I need to perfect the technique. Again, I thought this wouldn't be the case looking at photos from other peoples' visits. I have given this place four stars as the waitress was chatting a lot to a customer and the tables including my own were dirty with lots of crumbs probably from breakfast. As I was paying up, more staff arrived, probably to start the lunch shift. Therefore, I definitely will be here again and try some cake!

Winter spirits evening at sugar junction. Too many glasses for one table!
Emma M.

Very quaint with a great friendly atmosphere. The cakes are bigger than my head. I love places that serve me tea and wine simultaneously! Before Christmas a large group of us came for a 'Christmas spirits' drinks tasting event. Because who doesn't like to drink gin from a tea cup!

bourbon coke float (2013)

Cozy, cute and kitsch - that's everything Sugar Junction wants to be. Thirsty from a few hours of sale shopping, we fancied something different and decided to go against our usual NQ haunts, opting instead for Sugar Junction. Walking in, you're instantly stood next to the 'wait here to be served' sign - we were left waiting for a little while, feeling like the tourists who don't know what to do while everyone continued with their day. Finally, a waitress came over and apologised for leaving us waiting. There was a full on tutu and pink hen party downstairs (how very vintage...) so we had to sit outside. Not that I'm complaining, it's pretty humid at the moment and I didn't fancy being sat next to a gaggle of girls, but the NQ isn't exactly picturesque. Sugar Junction faces a military store and, for anyone who's ever seen Pulp Fiction, places like that are never a good thing. With this, I feel we missed out on what everyone loves about Sugar Junction - the inside. The menu offers up a variety of tasty sounding dishes, including afternoon tea (champagne and gluten-free available) and breakfast, but we were only there for a drink. The specials menu offered up lots of summery cocktails, but I went for a bourbon coke float, thinking only about my inner child and not about whether I even like bourbon. The result was a sweet yet savoury treat, served with Penelope's ice cream. The other half went for a coffee, served in a huge china mug - thumbs up. We had to wait what felt like ages for our drinks, making me think that perhaps they were a touch understaffed for a Saturday - there was barely a moment when people weren't walking in. I'll be coming back for sure - the breakfast offerings are enough to make me want to get out of bed - but it remains at 3 stars for now.

What even is that. Brilliance, that's what it is. What looks like something beyond what you'd get at Room or Australasia in the nouveau cuisine stakes is brought to casual dining, in a casual environment at thoroughly casual prices. I've had some utterly lovely meetings and social experiences in here recently and its reclaimed its crown as Norther Quarter Big Daddy. No, wait. There are too many contenders to that crown. Let me get my Game of Thrones geek on. You know how in the second book there are seven folks claiming themselves king? If you don't, seriously, get involved. Anyway, Teacup feels like one of the more rightful contenders. Kind of like a Stannis Baratheon. Willing to experiment with new things. Determined and full of effort. Takes things seriously. Might have had a dip in popularity at some point, but heck, that does not keep a rightful king down. Teacup has totes re-stolen my heart. You know how quite a few Yelp reviews complain about certain things? Particularly Claire I's whereby the manager treated her meanly - well, fear no more. The manager she mentioned is gawn. In his place is an environment that feels so welcoming and friendly that it's like going into your best friend's front room for a brew. Their coffee is still one of the finest blends in all NQdom. It's time to wipe the slate clean. I for one cannot WAIT to taste this new evening menu. Supper and a cuppa, yes PLEASE!

But now to the rest a teatime should be sacred time with loved once an hour to relax calm down and enjoy good tea and food. We had the queens tea and it comes as a full high tea with scones, sandwiches and sweets. While the service - as already mentioned was great (they switched one set to vegetarian sandwiches) - the sandwiches have not been. The toast was a bit try on the edges and the actual spread and creations have been lackluster to be friendly. The chickpea vegetarian was the best by far. The scones clearly made in house fresh and really good tasting. But they have been more like a bead bun in consistency- but together with the clotted cream very very good. Just not really scones. This tea room also did disappointed me with just serving a tiny glass of industrial made strawberry preserves. They also only serve one "scone" per person and did not offered any more sandwiches or scones. And then finally the "sweets" the Richmond tea room takes that word very very literal. Besides a macaron and a little passionfruit tartlet they served two pieces of cake that have both been tasting like sugar only. While looking ok they just had no taste whatsoever other than just being overly sweet. No fruit flavor or distinctive taste. Since I left mine untouched since they were just not good maybe that why they don't offered more sandwiches or scones. All in all it was just not the teatime I was looking for spending with my husband as quality time we slowed down drinking the tea but we did not really enjoyed the food and that messed up the experience. Sadly. Starting with five stars I'll take one of for the stall sandwiches, another one for uninspired sweets and a third for the jam and overall price / quality relations. Since I would have lived with it when it would have been a cheap teatime in a restaurant, but it's a location that ha w tea room even in the name.

However these wonders of technology take something of a back seat in this beautiful, delightful pop-up tearoom. Each lovely and friendly member of staff is dressed head-to-toe (okay, maybe not head and toe - some lovely quirky haircuts and glasses obvs. This IS Manchester after all) in 1930s tearoom staff finery. A proper working gramophone takes pride of place, providing the kind of soundtrack that makes the Northern Quarter's retro vintage cafés sound like they've got Now 56 blaring out, and I'm currently seated on a plush leather sofa in front of an aviary. With real tweeting birdies. But there are cheeky nods to the present day too. My choice of cake (officially the best cake choice I've ever made in my life - not even joking) was a delicious slab of Americana amidst all this quintessentially English tradition... a peanut butter and jam cake. Listen here, I spent part of my time devouring it, part trying to figure out how the hell I could replicate it. I'm reckoning it's standard Vicky sponge, but it would appear that a layer of crunchy PB has been baked into the base. The topping is a jam icing, similar to the one Jamie Oliver got us all to make one Red Nose Day where he smushed up strawberries with icing sugar... but even better than that, somehow. Does this frosting have butter in it? I don't know! But I need this cake in my life again. So why am I so desperate to replicate it? Because I'm already in mourning. This place is only open until Friday 10th Feb 2012 and I am utterly devastated. I want to try everything on the menu. I've not even started on the vast selection of teas available. There are more cakes than you can shake a hungry fork at. And about that coffee. When did you last get - let me just check - FIVE cups for £1.50? Out of your own coffeemaker at home perhaps? I want to start a petition to keep this place going, permanently. As in, it always needs to be final year art degree money-raising project time. The only thing that sucks about all Manchester's amazing pop-ups? That they're not forever! I don't want to be *that girl* holding somebody's ankles begging them not to go, but if Holden Tea Room had legs, well, hand me my best grabbing gloves please. Seriously, no pride. Stay. Don't leave us. We love you.

We arrived for final service at 6pm and as you can imagine it was very busy on Mothers Day. The maître d' came straight over to us to let us know how long it would be until we were seated and continuously gave us progress updates. Whilst waiting we perused the small shop of local produce, had a drink and soaked up our surroundings. The Tea Room is a new addition to Holden Clough Nursery being built in the last few years, but looks like it should have always been there! It is beautiful and sympathetically designed to its surroundings. So, the food....WOW! I'd seen pictures but when our Afternoon Tea arrived on a mini picnic bench I felt like clapping!! (In fact, I think I did!!) Such a great idea and adds a little bit of originality and quirkiness to your experience. Everything on my picnic bench was delicious. The Mushroom soup was silky, creamy and full of flavour. The mini Roast Beef Dinner served in an individual yorkshire pudding was beautiful and of course came with a little jug of gravy and beef was tender and pink. The scone was fresh and light with jam that had just the right sweetness and fruit mix. My other main highlight was the Rocky Road, I'm not usually a fan because its too rich and sweet but O-M-G this was amazing. I still find myself thinking about it now two days on. Many people might recognize Annie's as being owned by Jennie McAlpine and her partner, Jennie is a British actor who is from the Manchester area, being born in Bury and she placed Fizz in Coronation Street. When I visited, it didn't have a nice feel to it, it just felt a really small place and quiet, myself and another party were the only ones in there, before they originally vacated, the service didn't improve because of that, the guy who served me seemed nice but he did seem a little pushy, trying to stay near my table when I was trying to concentrate on my order, so kept coming over too soon before I decided on what I was to choose, he had a decent knowledge on what on the menu was gluten free but they didn't have a menu or allergy book, which was awkward and made it more tiresome and frustrating for me, as well as harder to order. I was also upset that Annie's wouldn't accept my Tastecard, despite it not stating that it must be on the main menu and after 5pm on their website, they even seem really strict on having to pre-book it, meanwhile places like Pizza Express and Prezzo, also in Manchester don't seem to care if you waltz on in, after speaking to Tastecard they should have accepted it as it says nothing in the terms and conditions about certain menus you have to order from and times, which was frustrating. They also had loads of menus too, they just thrown on my table with no explanation, which just was rather unusual and didn't seem too welcoming or friendly either, which was a shame. At the end of the day, due to the awful atmosphere, bad selection on the menu, poor service, poor menu and high pricing, I decided to walk out which made me quite sad as I have wanted to try Annie's for a while now, as from the outside it does seem quite nice, but sadly it doesn't seem to be, which is a shame and I feel sadly warrants a one star review, and for now due to breaking Tastecard terms and conditions, which they agreed and signed up for, warrants a place on my "Places not to go list"
