Located inside the excellent, Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel, just off Deansgate on Peter Street in Manchester. Peter Street Kitchen combines Japanese and Mexican cuisine in a cool, modern menu down to the standard A la carte menu and even the breakfast, for example with your standard hotel breakfast which is served here you can order "A taste of" one of these beautiful countries.
Japan: Smoked salmon sashimi on a toasted muffin with wasabi mayo, shichimi and fresh lemon
Mexico: Poached hens' eggs, cayenne-buttered muffin, sliced avocado and Mayan-spiced hollandaise.
I visited here for breakfast during my stay at the Radisson, and I feel I was impressed with the quality of both food and service. Breakfast is served from 7 to 10:30 during the week, and between 7:30 and 11 on weekends and bank holidays, which is pretty much in line with other hotels in the area.
At £20 per head, breakfast is slightly more expensive but as it is located in a five-star hotel this can be expected, and there is a discounted rate for hotel guests, for previous bookings I've paid between £6.25 and £7.25 each which is a considerable saving, while being much cheaper than other hotels in Manchester which generally charge between £13 and £18.
The buffet selection is small and it can be hard to access at times, as they are located on a high table and the breakfast area is slightly small and cramped so can get busy with everyone wanting the freshly made baked beans (had a paprika kick), or the creamy scrambled egg.
One thing I found confusing is that you had to order toast with your server, which most other hotel breakfasts usually let you do yourself, which did cause some confusion for me in knowing which toast was and wasn't gluten free, luckily I managed to stop myself before eating the first lot of toast that comes out - the gluten-containing toast my friend ordered looked stunning, it was presented in a cardboard tray with butter and jam, and split into quarters. I've never seen toast presented so beautifully, which is what added insult to injury when mine come out unsliced with no extras next to my omelette, with soggy store-bought bread which tasted like cat food.
All of the items on the buffet I tried were good quality including extras, they managed to make poached and fried eggs to my liking, even though I would have liked them on the buffet, ordering them fresh meant they'd be fresher and be able to make them to my liking so I did like that.
I also ordered a ham and cheese omelette, it tasted good and was seasoned well, I did have to send my first one back as it was really overcooked which was a shame.
The orange juice here was fresh, it tasted freshly squeezed with pulp, however, my main issue with the fruit juices would be that they were in jugs rather than the pourers most hotel use, and there was only a selection of orange or grapefruit juice, I would have prefered another juice or two to choose from such as Apple.
As within the hotel, they used the premium tea brand Newby and I had a really enjoyable earl grey tea which tasted fantastic, which is also something this hotel does better than others.
Overall, minus a few negatives and inconvenience, the breakfast and overall service at Peter Street Kitchen is good, and despite being in a five-star hotel the prices are much more reasonable than one would expect, such as charging between £6.25 and £20 for breakfast, and £28 for afternoon tea.
A four-star review for good quality food and service has been awarded, but due to issues with the presentation of the buffet and issues with how my omelette was cooked (an egg station would have been super to watch the chef cook your food), I feel it doesn't deserve higher than the four-star rating. read more
