This review is bittersweet.
It's sweet because this was the most delicious Mexican food I have had in a long long time.
It's bitter because as of 12th January 2020 ... this restaurant will be closed .
I was told to try this restaurant by multiple people on a Facebook group and when I heard it was closing, I knew I had to come up especially to try it before it closes.
This being the first time I've tried an authentic Mexican restaurant (one that isn't Taco Bell or barburrito (nothing wrong with those places by the way, I love them too)) I didn't know what to expect.
I checked the menu before hand to see if I could order something (I noticed there was calamari, octopus and prawns and other things I haven't tried yet) but saw there was old faithful chicken and steak.
I think part of the reason it closed was because it was a little hard to find. Luckily I go around the street often on my way to forbidden planet so I had an idea where it was. I got into the place fine and noticed it looked a little like it's parent restaurant (solita) with its layout and decor. This isn't a bad thing btw ... it fits in well with the trendy norther quarter kink.
For some it could have been a bad thing but I didn't mind, but when I got in, I got seen to fairly quickly but the only 1 seat available was next to the till and near the kitchen, I didn't mind as I could have a peek into how to make Mexican food .. although I was near the prep area so I pooped out of luck there.
The place was busy though so there was a little wait, but I didn't mind, I didn't have anywhere else to be and was able to read a small chapter of my book.
I ordered a starter of tostada volcanos with steak (I was worried volcanos meant spicy but it didn't ) followed by a main of tinga de pollo quesadilla and a side or tortilla chips.
For some reason they arrived out of order with the quesadilla first and then the others came shortly afterwards .. which is fine coz usually I want it all rather than the starter, then to wait.
Omg .. it was all delicious ... the quesadilla was super tasty with the perfect amount of meat, cheese and a little kick which I like.
The tortilla chips were multicoloured and really crispy and freshly made .. none of the store bought ones. However I found them a little dry but my uncultured heathen self usually has salsa with them .. which I may have been able to ask for but hey ho.
The tostada was out of this world ... sometimes steak can be cooked and be chewy but this was glorious ... it melted in my mouth and there was no struggle to chew it. If I could have 3 tonne of it, I would have.
The whole staff were super nice and I wish them the very best in their future of whatever is in store and I am super sad that I only tried the place the day before it closed.
I shall always remember the best Mexican food I have had in Manchester though. read more
