Northstar Restorations - Thermal bridging on the roof. Solution: 1" of polyiso foam board underneath the siding.

    Northstar Restorations

Northstar's team just installed a metal roof on our 1910 residential house in Sellwood. They did…read moresome siding, added some insulation in the attic and other work to give our house a nice upgrade. We decided to invest in a metal roof for its strength, good look, and longevity. And it can be recycled at the end of its life - that seems better than throwing asphalt shingles into a landfill. Northstar's team was comprised of good people with great skills who work together well. The price was reasonable and they had good references. Highly recommend.

I have to admit, I was a little hesitant when I received Northstar's bid. They were scheduling work…read morewhen other metal siding contractors were declining jobs for the rest of the year. Was their availability a bad sign? What was I missing? I'm so glad that I decided to check Northstar's references (glowing) and move forward. They were awesome! Their install team was professional and courteous, from repairing my home's sheathing and installing the house wrap, to interacting with the windows contractor and installing the siding. They clearly had experience installing the product (Metallion's seamless siding). (Example: They were able to disguise a 4" discrepancy in elevation between one corner of the house and an adjacent corner 30' away. Wow!) Most importantly, they were polite and accommodating to my many questions and requests. They even threw in some extra work at cost. We are delighted with the end result. We regularly receive compliments on how our house looks. We are thrilled to have new siding that never needs a drop of paint, a fact that offsets the higher materials cost than cement board. (Speaking of 'offsetting,' the siding manufacturer (SteelScape, in WA) operates on hydroelectric power, and the siding is recyclable at end of life. If you're replacing your siding, consider the material's entire lifecycle.) I would recommend NorthStar Restorations without hesitation. If you can get on their schedules, count yourself lucky. PS - If you're removing your old siding, this is the time to insulate your home. Ask Northstar to install 1" foam board onto your home's sheathing. This will help to prevent thermal bridging. The foam board increased the project cost about 20%: well worth it to increase comfort all year 'round. While you're at it, have NW Weatherization dense pack cellulose into your stud bays -- dense pack cost another 10%. Now our walls are a true R-18 -- no penalty for heat loss through the framing. Reading: "Thermal Bridging" by Martin Holladay in Fine Homebuilding, 2010 "Calculating the Minimum Thickness of Rigid Foam Sheathing" - Green Building Advisor (October 2010) "Fiberglass versus Cellulose - GreenBuildingAdvisor (March 2012) "Comparing Exterior Wall Finishes Using Life-Cycle Assessment," 7th International Building Physics Conference, IBPC2018 PPS - Three details if I could do the project over again: I would have insisted on house wrap and foam board that was not a vapor barrier (limited materials choices in late 2021). I would have laid 6' of weed mat around the house and landscaping, to pick up errant shavings of siding scrap at the very end. I would have negotiated a round of touch-up work. Small bare patches, where the color coating gets scratched off during installation, seem unavoidable.

They were friendly, too! I highly recommend them and I will certainly be giving them my business in the future. I hired them to do roof cleaning, gutter cleaning and moss-prevention treatment. And to me, the price was fair and affordable. Again, I'm a new homeowner and this was the first time I ever had to do this... so even if what I paid was too much (I wouldn't know), I don't care because their stellar customer alone was worth every penny. Thanks, Moss Busters! I'll see you again in September!

Tyson and Hayden did an excellent job on everything!! I get a lot of moss on my backyard roof due to a lot of maple trees. Each time Mossbusters made the roof look new. They do an inspection as well and will fix any light repairs (there were a few loose nails in some flashing that they hammered back in) and let you know if there are any concerns you should address. They do a nice cleaning and washing of all the gutters and even though you can't really tell from the photos, my vinyl siding looks sparkling clean, especially the side that in the shade and gets a bit green. I had recommended them to my neighbor who also had service done a week ago and they gave us both a discount!! I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who needs these services.

He said his kids had removed it over the weekend. I offered my 36‑foot ladder so he could take a look. He leaned it against my gutter, which began to bend as he climbed, so I stopped him to prevent further damage. He said he would return the next day with a technician and proper equipment to fix the gutter and inspect the skylight. He never showed up. When I called the office, I was told he would call me back, which never happened. Overall, this was an unprofessional experience, and I would not recommend this company.

Within months of them having done this the roof started leaking around the chimney and, it was noted by a contractor doing a different project on my house, that the roofers had lifted the electric roof fan, disrupting the power but did not cap the live wires. When I called Stalcup about these concerns they sent 2 guys out to tar around the chimney and completely remove the fan (a decision not discussed with me) and patch the roof. More recently, in prep to put my house up for sale a pre-inspection check revealed the roof is prematurely at end of life. I called Stalcup to request that they honor the warrantee but they declined to do this instead, they sent a salesman to offer me a bid on a 50 year warrantee roof! There are too many reputable companies out there, do not risk your roof with Stalcup.

Chuck did horrible work for us. No contract. He should loose his license for this alone. Agreed…read morescope of work was to take 2 weeks at $2000 per week Total $4000. After 4 weeks work $8000 work was still not complete. Quality of work was hideous. Did not caulk trim, wall paint on trim so it needs repainting, did not patch holes or remove screws left in wall just painted over them. We had to tear tile off back splash and redo as it was so crooked. Plumbing of sinks had to be redone, he damaged cabinets as he was not careful when installing. Jumped around from task to task with no rhyme or reason, getting work out of sequence. We had to tear out cabinet, stove hood, and trim to install vent for stove hood as he did not install vent prior to installing cabinet and hood. Really??? This guy is no contractor - he really does not know what he is doing. WHEN TOLD WE WANTED ITEMS CORRECTED HE WALKED OFF JOB LEAVING IT INCOMPLETE AND TOOK SOME OF OUR MATERIALS WITH HIM. He built some fold up shelves for storing pellets which were OK, but instead of using the hooks and eyes we purchased he used bent nails as wall fasteners. Chuck also installed a couple of pieces of siding around mesh venting. This looks terrible, the mesh is wrinkled and could easily be pulled away from the house. He moved a PVC water line to allow for access from the porch. This was fine except he left the hose washers and pieces of PVC on the deck. He left the saw horses unfolded and sitting in the middle of the carport along with all of the saw dust from cutting the siding. In general his work was sloppy and he did not clean up after himself. In addition to the quality of his work he is overpriced. If you deal with him be sure to get a contract in writing.
