Perfect Dinner! After a cold January sunset at Yellowstone Park, my mom & I drove down the main street looking for dinner. I sent her in to check out the atmosphere and the mine theme with fireplaces and a good smell got the nod. We shared a 16 oz prime rib steak. I like medium, she likes m rare. They only serve the steak whole but brought a plate with half the veggie & extra condiments. I ate the edge pieces from the 3" thick slab, she ate the center. It was great for both our tastes, and delicious. I'm not a huge steak fan, but this could convert me. They split the side salad for us which had several veggies & fresh mixed greens. The house vinaigrette was tasty - both sweet & tart with good flavor. The baked potato had good flavor & texture from skin to center. The asparagus was done with a light touch. It went down easy with hot apple cider (plus Yukon Jack or rum), and despite being full of food and the tasty multigrain loaf bread, we picked the housemade Blueberry Pie with Huckeberry ice cream for dessert. Perfection. We almost arm wrestled to see who could lick the plate clean. The waitress was friendly, quick, & accommodating - we started dining alone then the room half filled. The bar waitress was also gracious in directing us to the non- fried food. The restroom was very clean, located behind a sculptural wall of quartz. Will absolutely dine here again. Uh, no. My trip to Yellowstone brought me to Montana for the first time, and I was very excited to experience a real Montana steakhouse. Now granted, I should have eased up on my expectations in Gardiner, which is a tourist town geared towards people just like me, looking for park-convenient lodging. But at the same time, this could be a great opportunity for a restaurant to really rise to the challenge of pleasing international palattes. Unfortunately, The Yellowstone Mine fails. Upon first look, I thought it was great - not too fancy, and decorated in perfect Western fashion. But pretty much the minute we sat down, things went downhill. The first server came by and took our drink orders. When I said, "Just water for now," she promptly took away the wine list. Strike 1 at a steakhouse, lady. Service was quite slow from that point forward, and it was laughable how long I had to wait for that wine list to return after asking our main server for it. After about 5 minutes passed, she asked if I'd seen the list yet. When I replied that I hadn't, she said, "Okay let me check on that for you." CHECK ON IT?? It's a wine list! Just GET IT FOR ME. Needless to say, her "checking on it" did nothing, and I had to ask another server yet again to bring it to me. All in all, I probably waited 20 minutes for that wine list. Unfortunately, once I did see it, I was very disappointed by the selection and opted for iced tea instead. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a wine snob, but please have something available that's a cut above Kendall-Jackson and Berringer. Our starters were fine - corn chowder and garden salad. But when we finally got our entrees, they were below average. The baked potato came plain, wrapped in foil. We were provided with butter and sour cream with chives on the side. This is not a huge offense in and of itself, but it would be nice for them to provide a loaded option for diners. The major transgression was the steak itself. I ordered a medium-rare rib eye, while my husband ordered a filet cooked the same way. These steaks didn't taste nearly as good as my own, cooked on an indoor grill. I'm all about the natural essence of the meat, but there was positively no flavor whatsoever. I actually set aside a good portion of it for my dog back in the hotel room - only his (mostly) undiscerning tastebuds could be satisfied by this. We had no desire for dessert, so the waitress came back to our table with the check after much time had passed. As she handed it to us, she instructed us to take it up to the register. Really? Really, at your nice steakhouse, we have to walk the check up? What is this, a food court? The straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that the receipt had tipping guidelines...beginning at a standard 15%, then jumping to 20% and finally 25%! I don't think I've ever seen tip guidelines that don't include 18% in the finest restaurants in the country. Now I don't have any problem tipping big when the service warrants it. And in fact, I'd say in general I start around 18%. But it's offensive for them to expect so much, especially for giving so little. 1 star just for being in Gardiner and providing a convenient dining option for tourists. A second star for the host, who is very friendly and seems to elicit more care about diner satisfaction than anyone else. But this restaurant wouldn't last 3 months in most places I can think of. read more

Delicious ribs! The atmosphere is country western, but there could be some changes to make it nicer. To be honest, you could mistake it for a senior living center's dining room if it weren't for the families eating there. The bathrooms are right next the place where the waitresses bring the food out, which is a strange positioning. However, the food is good, and the waitresses were polite. read more

My experience here was wonderful. I was very reluctant to try it out because of the reviews I'd read but I was very pleased and would recommend it to anyone based on my experience. The service was wonderful, although they were quite slow to get us seated. Once we were at our table the server went above and beyond to accommodate our orders. We have been coming to this restaurant for years and always could count on our food to be hot, well prepared and taste good. We returned this year and ordered rib eye steaks, which came out with absolutely zero flavoring. My green beans were cold as if not fully defrosted. No amount of A1 could help the flavorless steak. We decided to try the restaurant one last time before ending our vacation, hoping they were just off the prior visit. The second time we each ordered a bowl of wild game chili. When the waitress served the chili, it was cold as if just taken from the refrigerator. We sent it back to be reheated and when it came back it was still cold to the touch. My friends burger was raw and cold in the middle, like steak tartar. This restaurant should be avoided at all costs until their food preparation is improved/overhauled. Perhaps they need some new cooks with training. I do have to say the waitress was very nice and so was the manager who ended up comping what portion of the meals we ate. Good food but have never experienced such a rude waitress. Was afraid to ask for anything above her serving the food. Because if we ask for butter or anything else she gave us this look of exasperation. When she did serve the food, she slammed it down and hurried away. Even though the food was good I came away from the experience bewildered and wondering why I paid for such treatment. Not sure if she had had a bad day or what before my companions and I arrived. read more

There were 5 of us in our party. The food was okay. Service was not bad although our waitress was not checking on us for our entire meal but she decided to add 20 percent tip to our bill! We are not confrontational people so we paid and left. I don't think it is right to include the "service charge" in the check. OK, this is no Spago or other big city, fancy restaurant. If you want that you are obviously in the wrong place. We ate here on a Saturday night and, arrived late 8 PM. Unfortunately, the prime rib was not available and they were out of other entrées, as well. However, we were served dinner bread, salad, the trout almandine, with vegetables and a rice pilaf. Get the sesame bread! The rainbow trout I had was good, not sure about the almonds though, not bad just not the way I like my rainbows. My friend had the French onion soup and enjoyed it. The salad had real blue cheese crumbles and a lot of color, not just the old iceberg and ranch usually find in Montana eateries. I had the trout, which was only good after I put a lot of tartar sauce on it. My husband had the "filet," which was probably a sirloin steak, sold as a filet. It was very tough and way under cooked. I had 2 hairs in my food. Our bill was close to $100, after wine and dessert. Not worth it. read more

I've been eating at the mine for more than twenty years, easily the best restaurant in Gardiner, MT. Lets hope I'm still going for another 20, maybe 30 years. The ribeye with an appetizer of shrimp is the best. read more

Look, food outside National Parks doesn't have to be this bad - boring, bland. In the winter, this is one of the only places open in Gardiner, MT. It's a mystery to me that this place is open at all. Oddly, bad food seems to go hand-in-hand with the towns outside of national parks. There was nothing, nothing exceptional, or even really good about what we ate. Yes, burgers, steaks, etc are available, but not an ounce of creativity here. There was nothing that made us sick, nothing that I would have sent back, but definitely no reason to go here again. Boring American food. If you are a boring American, this place might be good for you, but I prefer to think I'm at least a mildly interesting American and restaurant left me hoping for an additional page of menu items for people who are not afraid of words like aioli, al dente, or seared. read more

Average food, terrible service - The menu's meat options like the prime rib and BBQ ribs were quite good but the salmon was overcooked and the vege pasta sauce too rich and salty. Our dining experience was marred by the incompetent and rude service of one of the waitresses (Veronica). We had to send back the bill 3 times due to her mistakes in itemizing the orders, and her attitude towards us was curt and arrogant. The other servers were nice though. read more

DON'T EAT HERE!!!!! We stopped in for breakfast after reading in the Livingston Enterprise that the hotel and restaurant had recently been purchased by the Delaware North company (they have also taken over the "gift shops" in Yellowstone Park). The article boasted ALL the upgrades the company had incorporated after their purchase. We thought great, upon walking in we saw it was a buffet, ok not always a bad thing, the hostess was polite and informed us it was $9.95 a person and we could look before we purchased. We shrugged and said what the heck. HUGE MISTAKE!!! Food was cold, sausage had rocks in it, french toast was tough, hash browns where a weird gray color but what really sent us over the edge was when my father visited the restroom and there was no soap. So logic states if there is no soap for patrons there is no soap for employees... He even informed the staff to have them shrug at him. Upon checking out my father asked if there was a senior or veteran discount to be informed "No the employees don't even get discounts", well the employees are smart enough to not eat there!!!!! I completely understand this buffet is basically for hotel guests and complimentary for them and we should have realized that as soon as we stepped in, we will never make such an error again. They really should take down the HUGE breakfast flag they have out front and close this sad breakfast down to the public. read more

It's hard to go wrong on a breakfast buffet but they succeeded. We went on a weekday morning before a visit to Yellowstone. The buffet included biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash brown casserole, pancakes, yogurt, cereal, fruit (not fresh), and a pastry assortment. While the selection wasn't terrible, it was missing several things I would have expected- bacon, a waffle maker, etc. The hash brown casserole was barely warm and lacking in taste - I couldn't eat it. My son didn't like his hot chocolate and didn't drink it. The sausage was good. The yogurt was okay but I had to wait for the frozen blueberries to thaw. The service was poor - we stacked our used plates on the table and they were not removed until the waitress brought our bill. When I asked what the age was for a child's price and told her one of my kids was under the age limit she was clearly annoyed at having to change the bill. I don't consider myself a picky eater but this was one of the worst buffets I have had. On numerous occasions I have had excellent breakfast buffets that were included with the room. It is disappointing I paid $9 for this (I was not staying at an associated hotel). read more

Great food! Friend staff! Great huckleberry ice cream!!!! A bit pricey for a family restaurant, the normal kids choices so we had to order the kids off the normal menu. Grilled chicken and veggies $18.00. All in all good. read more

Very good prime rib, and the price was right (especially this close to Yellowstone). Beer was cheap and cold, and service was very friendly. My only complaints were that the mashed potatoes were clearly from a box, and very dry; and my wife would have preferred more chicken options. read more

"Really quite bad" doesn't fully encapsulate the awful experience at Yellowstone Mine. First the food: Prime Rib was dry, over cooked, flavorless despite being promised I could get Medium (about the best you can expect from a roast at a restaurant). This was just plain an inferior piece of meat. The salad was wilted,the potato, dry. The ribs my son had were tender but bathed so thickly in a crappy tasting BBQ sauce that he remarked "dad where is the meat." Now the service: we saw our server exactly twice, one when she took our order, and two when I had to beg for the check almost 2 hours later. When she finally brought the check she said "we are very busy could you pay up front". I had no problem with this since I figured it would be much quicker but not what you expect from a place charging 20 to 35 for entrees. Oh and one more thing, we heard way more personal talk amongst the serving staff that we should ever have a right to. I picked up that the whole restaurant and attached Best Western hotel were recently sold to "the Clampetts" whoever that is.
