WARNING TO SUBCONTRACTORS AND HOMEOWNERS: Yarrow Landscaping does not honor agreements. I was subcontracted by Yarrow Landscaping to provide CAD drafting, planting plan, and 3D renderings. Despite clear agreements and delivering all work, I was never paid for my services. For the Haskell St. project (6000 sq ft), I completed 17 pages including a planting palette, full planting plan, and multiple 3D renderings. For the Mariposa Montessori school project in Austin, I created 9 full 3D renderings at a discounted rate-- but was never compensated. Both projects involved weeks of effort, yet payment was withheld. I even have proof were Angela, the owner, said she really enjoys working with me-- which makes it even more disappointing that she chose to ignore my invoice instead of honoring our agreement. Nobody should be treated this way-- especially after providing honest, hard work. Angela, the owner, should understand that it is not right to withhold payment for services rendered. As a homeowner considering their services, you may want to think about whether you want to support a company that treats their subcontractors this way. Mandi is hands down the best landscape designer I have ever worked with. I had an idea of what I wanted, and she designed something WAY better for the same cost. It was creative, beautiful, cost-efficient, sustainable, and most importantly, it was our style. She listened to my wants and needs and delivered something well beyond what I was expecting. Mandi was available to consult whenever I needed. She made the introduction to her installation team, who were extremely nice and included me in any decisions that needed to be made when the project hit something unexpected. Horrible experience. Very disorganized. Killed trees by moving soil from one area of the yard to another. They are not mindful of soil ph(which is what killed our trees). Killed 6 large plants all together. Did not get our koi pond fully fixed. A young koi ended up dying. Had to literally get a lawyer involved because they would not accept that we didn't want to pay them after the decimated so much of our yard and didn't fix the issues. Had tried to work out agreement with business owner to simply take down photos from our botched job that we know represent false advertising. Owner agreed, but she didn't follow-up. As many/most other posters have stated, this was one of our worst experiences with a subcontractor EVER (and we've had our share of experiences across the U.S). We were naive, trusted Mandi and Yarrow, but we were just like most others the past 3 years based on the plethora of similarly negative reviews. They trashed our property, replaced more expensive trees with cheaper trees, broke our sprinklers and septic pipes by driving where we had marked off not to drive, etc, etc, etc. With so many reputable landscape companies, please don't waste your time with this company. I'm happy to provide emails, pictures, and invoices to anyone still considering this outfit. EDIT: The only thing worse than submitting an honest, but critical review is to be harassed by the business owner (I just had to block Staci) EDIT PART II: Business owners are good at painting paying customers in a negative light. Don't say you haven't been warned. Also, it would be great for Staci to share her email stating her sister is no longer working with new customers . . . EDIT III: In addition to Staci assuring me her sister would no longer work with new customers, I have the quote and emails from Mandi, after we bought the house, showing her sister Staci is simply lying about the timing. We had our landscape designed and installed by Yarrow Landscaping. I am generally happy with how the mostly finished landscape turned out, however, I would never recommend Yarrow to others. The frustration that we have experienced with the disorganized team, lack of attention to detail, and poor communication has been a complete nightmare for the last 6 months. During the contract phase, we had to correct them multiple times for things that they completely left off of the contract that were clearly stated in the design. Even after construction began we were told in the middle of the project that some items were mistakenly left off and we were expected to pay for them. They did offer these items at "cost," but it was still frustrating thinking we knew what our total cost was only to have it increase in the middle of the project. Their teams were poorly coordinated, rarely worked more than half a day, and had poor attention to detail. The work is still not complete as various issues with the installation are beginning to show. The Yarrow team prefer to argue with you over e-mail about why they are not responsible for installation issues rather than meet with the customer to see and understand the customer concerns. I wanted to like Yarrow, but I did not. There are many others out there, and I suggest you look somewhere else. Communication - Our first project leader primarily corresponded via text, but constantly lost the text messages, rarely responded to my emails, and never seemed to have an idea of when things were happening or why his team did not show up. He mostly seemed to tell us what we wanted to hear as far as timelines and status of work instead of what was actually going to happen. The second project leader came in without following up on any of the previous conversations, was passive aggressive in her emails, and simply would respond that certain installation issues were "normal" for landscaping or the best that they could do instead of trying to address the issues. Time Management - Our project was supposed to take 6-8 weeks. We are now going on 6 months and Yarrow does not seem interested in completing our project. Sub contractors rarely worked all day or consecutive days, and even the project managers were consistently late or missed scheduled meetings. Attention to Detail - We understand that the initial installation will not be perfect, but when we raised issues to the project managers they were not dealt with appropriately. It took the team several attempts on many of the issues as they would always try a halfhearted fix instead of fixing things correctly based on the underlying cause. Many times, we had to communicate with the subcontractors directly to get things right which totally defeated the purpose of hiring a general contractor. The edging has been particularly frustrating as we expected high quality steel edging. Instead they poorly installed the snap together metal edging from your local home improvement store. It is flimsy and crooked, and if that is what we wanted, we could have done it better ourselves. Craftsmanship - We are still dealing with a patio long crack in the back patio. They attempted to fix the crack but within a week it has already reappeared. A crack has also appeared in our front concrete patio addition and the gates they installed are already sticking and difficult to open. The carpenter and welder are painfully slow and have terrible time management, but did a reasonable quality job, until the "sealed" wood on our benches started spotting after only one light rain. Respect for Homeowner - One of the biggest concerns of this project was the safety of our dogs and kids. This was totally neglected and poorly planned for. After I complained many times, a partial temporary fence was put up (screwing even more holes into our house), that our dogs jumped. Trash - Construction debris was left all over our property and in Shoal Creek including screws, metal brackets, mortar, and water bottles. Instead of addressing the problem and coming out to see what our concern was, we had to argue for weeks about the definition of debris and spend hours cleaning ourselves before Yarrow finally came to at least haul off what we had cleaned. read more

I appreciate that the business owner's response to my review clearly illustrates the dismissive and patronizing experience we encountered as customers of Yarrow. Their response does not address all concerns and contains either deliberate falsehoods or inaccuracies about communications and interactions. However, I am alarmed and unnerved by the hostility of their fabrications. Why would I pull up turf I paid to have installed? We did not know what composite was until Mandi suggested using it for our project and brought it in our yard, so how could we have requested it against their advice? We have clear documentation showing that we have a zero dollar balance on our bill and that we paid on schedule. We never asked for free/extra work. Unless Yarrow considers completing the work for which they were paid and contracted to do, but inexplicably no longer care to complete, free and extra. As we are troubled to think that a company would be so intentionally negligent, we prefer to conclude that they are extremely poor communicators and do not care enough about integrity, transparency, or customer satisfaction -- further supporting our experience with Yarrow as careless, unprofessional, and not worth the risk. read more

We would not use this company again. It took several tries for them to get the quality of work we were led to expect, and we never knew when they were going to show up. While the price was reasonable, the end result was unremarkable. You get what you pay for. read more

I had Yarrow replace my "low-maintenance" (read: ugly) stone-covered back yard with grass for my toddler to play in. From the bid (with lots of free advice about improving my front yard) to the attention to detail - the experience was near-perfect. Mandi and her team did a great job at estimating the costs, leveling the ground, and redistributing all the pebbles (a task I wouldn't wish upon anyone), before putting in the grass and making it all look great. Just moved to Austin, I used Yarrow to do a major refurbishment of my front and back yards. Added pathways, fruit trees, irrigation, flower beds , lighting and patios. The driveway and walkway to my house is very long, i wanted a "wow factor" but had no idea how to do it. The Yarrow team developed a great concept and delivered. We are of the DIY vein and always looking for ways we can accomplish projects around our house for less money. Periodically things do come up such as our backyard landscaping project, that are bigger than we are comfortable dealing with or wanting take on. Mandi and her crew were just the right people to help us out. Mandi helped us walk through the whole process telling us the things that we could easily do ourselves and things they could help with. Elid her bobcat driver came in and very quickly excavated our backyard and he didn't even blink twice with my slightly more unusual requests to build berms on top of hugelkulture beds. He was able to manueuver the bobcat scoop to literally fit within centimeters of indwelling posts to make this happen - it was very impressive to watch. Mandi also wrote out a step by step plan, complete with resource links for how we could complete the rest of the project on our own to keep our costs down. For people like myself who get easily distracted in the midst of big projects this was very helpful! read more

Yarrow is the best! I wanted to spruce up my home for sale. I did not want to spend a ton of money since I was selling, but I wanted to really improve the aesthetic. I had no idea where to start, but I contacted Yarrow and they immediately understood my desires and goals, and graciously took the reigns. Mandi was extremely quick in designing a beautiful and cost-effective plan for me that would work despite the challenges associated with landscaping in early January. Her knowledge of seasonal and climate-specific plant life is unreal. I could not be happier with the results. I now have a nice plush lawn, beautiful flower beds and a simple, yet thoughtful, environment for the new owner to enjoy. We hired Yarrow Landscaping for a complete yard design that would allow use to create an urban food forest- including bees, pond, water catchment, and chicken coop - to name a few. Alex did a tremendous job of hearing what we wanted and designing a project that could be completed over time. We used them to build the berm and swale garden and will use them for other pieces of the project we can't complete ourselves. They have been very responsive when we didn't know what we were doing or needed advice on how to move forward. read more

Yarrow did a pretty expensive landscaping at my property, and did a good job. They were responsive to what I was looking for and spent time working with me to create a unique plan. When weeds started growing through it, I contracted them to do regular maintenance to remove the weeds. I would highly recommend you do not use them for maintenance work. The scheduling is a mess. The crew that shows up doesn't do what they say they do. They missed scheduled appointments. When I complained to their office manager, she told me they "did everything except the rocks." There are ONLY ROCKS. Net/net: good for landscaping. Not good for maintenance. read more

EDITED: The Yarrow team crafted a design that met our needs and has earned many a compliment. The designer was friendly, listened to my criticism and adjusted the design as needed, including doing some major rework. The irrigation system hits all the spots and works flawlessly. However, in hindsight, I wish the design had taken more careful consideration of site conditions, namely sun and soil, and chosen more appropriate plants (many died of wet feet or failed to thrive in shade). While most perennials stood out in the warmer months, the lack of evergreens and foundation plants really hurt come the "cooler" months, with big gaps in the landscape. Also, I wish they had leveled out ground surfaces for the walkways because they ended up being uneven and not as clean as the rest of the design, plus opted for more expensive edging since plastic composite just hasn't held up. Otherwise, we have a yard we can work with for many years to come. read more

We hired Yarrow to do some landscaping with rocks and drought-proof plants in front of our house and to get rid of the lawn. When it was done we had some things that needed to be changed and I was not completely happy. The owner contacted me and gave us several free services, then followed up, and then had the crew come remove some rocks we didn't want. She went out of her way to make sure we were happy and I appreciate that. read more

She thought of ways to incorporate what we had, made thoughtful tweaks along the way when necessary, and was incredibly responsive and friendly. We recently remodeled our home and lost all of our landscaping in the process. We hired Yarrow to replace all of the grass in the front and back; plant a Japanese Maple; lay down river rocks and gray tumbled stones in several places; and plant a few other plants. They worked around our timeframe beautifully as we were trying to get the sprinkler system in place as well. We have since hired them for yard maintenance. They are affordable, professional, attentive, mindful, flexible and the work crews are polite and thorough. They are often sending me emails making suggestions or offering reminders to keep the yard in good condition. I will continue to use Yarrow and delight in the fact that I am getting excellent service by a local business owned by a couple neighborhood women. read more

We hired Yarrow to implement a cinderblock (modern-looking) courtyard and horizontal cedar fence in our front and side yard. We were highly impressed by the attention to detail, service-oriented staff, workmanship, and ability to translate our vision into reality. The finished product looks unbelievable and all the neighbors have commented on the new features. I highly recommend this team for any landscaping needs. Overpriced and uninspired and super poor customer service. Took forever to get design and each turn around had errors. Designer had difficulty remembering and incorporating feedback. Only time they were super responsive was getting the work and sending the bill. Used them on the basis of a referral even though my gut said not to work with them. Wish I had listened to my gut. We hired Yarrow to help us landscape our front and back yard. We wanted to involve native species but we just didn't have the time to research them. We also wanted a garden, but again, we needed some professional advice on what and when to plant. Yarrow worked with us to imagine what our space would look like, and they helped us tremendously with their extensive knowledge of native species (which ones wanted more sun versus shade etc.).
