I don't understand all the negative reviews. Maybe it's because the wait can be long, but he's popular for a reason with all the local (mostly Chinese speaking) patients. He's been my parents' doctor and my grandma's doctor for probably two decades, maybe even more. For the past decade or so, my parents literally make the 4-hour trek from their city all the way to San Gabriel just to continue seeing him. My dad is a stubborn hate-checkups kind of guy, so my mom loves that Dr. Yao threatens to "disown" him as a patient to get him to haul his stubborn self over to see him. He's still my primary even though I moved about 30-40 minutes away. When I do my annuals with him, he is efficient, courteous, and listens to all my questions. As busy as he is, I don't feel like I'm rushed at all during my meeting with him. My visit last month (June 2022) was about a 40-minute wait, and seeing him probably took a total of 15 minutes, but he was very thorough and had his assistant look up possible medications I could take due to my unique and rare circumstance. I really appreciated his time, bedside manners and overall friendly disposition and compassion, which has always been my experience with him. I will continue to see him as long as is feasible with my work schedule and commute. I am happy with the care he has given my family and would recommend him to any families who prefer a Chinese-speaking doctor. read more

My Linda and I are patients of Dr Yao for years. This review is for Dr Gordon Yao whom we are now seeing, Dr Gordon is extremely detailed and knowledgeable, may even surpassed his dad one day. Our 21 yr old started seeing him as well. This will be a life long relationship for my son and his primary physician. So glad to see young professionals doing things right for a change. My Yelp tip is still valid 2.5 years later. We don't have any big complaints about the doctor himself. We don't even have complaints about the staff. It's just the setup that's completely awful. Like everyone else has already mentioned, the wait is predictably ridiculous. Actual experience from our latest visit: signed in for appt, waited 10ish min for first name call for weight/ blood pressure, then waited additional 1 hr 30ish min for actually meeting the doctor. All for LESS THAN 10 MIN of face to face time with the man. I'm not saying we needed more attention from the doctor. I'm just wondering why patients have to show up 1-2 hours early EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. If it wasn't for that blood pressure check 10 min in, patients could probably come 2 hours past their "appointment" and be right on time. read more

Dr. Yao has moved to a new office: 230 E. Valley Blvd., Suite 200 San Gabriel, CA 91776 Dr. Yao has been my mom's doctor for more than 20 years. She's been his patient since Dr. Yao has been straight out of med school. Friendly and patient doctor, who will give it to you straight and a lil more blunt if he needs to be tough with you. He's taken really good care of her and has treated and cured a lot of her illnesses too. Granted the wait til sucks in here, nonetheless, he's done a good job taking care of her and so I don't mind the wait. His staff can sometimes be a hit and miss when it comes to being friendly, nonetheless, they'll get the stuff done for you. As for the new place: Bathroom Code: 5000 - restrooms are located in the lobby. Spacious and new and away from the cramped 500 N. Garfield Ave office space - so much better! There's more seating in here and not as sickly cramped as his previous office. Plus, there's a lot of pretty welcome to your new office orchid floral displays. If you get bored waiting, there's a bunch of boba places or eateries you can drive to or kill some time at Hawaii market. They also got a B&A Pharmacy down here for convenience to get your meds too. read more

Dr. Yu Yao is the man. He's been our family doctor for decades now. I've taken my grandpa there for years until he passed away. He was, unlike some other doctors, straight forward, honest, and gives great advice. For example in our family, money was a huge issue. We don't have health insurance for many reasons. Yu Yao took care of us and gave us advice on how to save money. He switched many drugs from brand name to generic. He also gave us insight to some of the name brand drugs and how some were really effective compared to the generic counterpart. Another example my dad was pretty sick one time and we rushed him to Yu Yao. One look and he told him to go to the E.R. immediately. While we were on our way Yu Yao called the E.R. and told him about our insurance issue and saved us a lot of money. He told us that some medical procedures are actually more expensive then others. Some leave bigger scars and are less invasive blah science blah. He saved us money and we're healthy that's all the matters. Downside: the wait is forever. Even with an appointment it takes forever. However, I do believe that he sorts out the patients by severity. That's the only reason why this isn't a 5-star rating. read more

Dr. Yao has been my 89 year old mother's physician for over 20 years. He is very attentive and have made sure her health issues are attended to. Even though his office is very busy he always makes time to spend with my mother explaining the issue and the treatment. One time when my mom was hospitalized she had issues with the nursing staff. Once I told Dr Yao he remedied that quickly by having my mom moved to a private room with new nurses. read more

Dr. Yao is one of the worst doctors my parents have encountered. His office (and his wife) are incredibly rude and have completely breached doctor-patient confidentiality by screaming my mother's medical conditions in front of everyone. Have they even heard of HIPAA compliance? He is disorganized, lacks professionalism, and has no understanding of bedside manner. As a doctor, he is pretty mediocre and has turned away my parents because of their insurance coverage, even when they offered to pay cash. I would recommend anyone see another doctor and not waste their time here. The only and major complain I have is the "office manager" (the sister in law of the doctor) charging copayment when she should know better when it comes to patients having physical exam. Per insurance policy, no copay if it is a physical exam; other office visits, there is a copay. My insurance company had to call the office directly to educate them. I was paying a copay regardless for over at least 10 years. Imagine how many patients have been paying and they have been collecting. $$$$ read more

Very patient and extremely busy doctor and staff. But the doctor is thorough in his examinations, approach to tests and even though he is busy, he takes the right amount of time given the circumstances. I'm very impressed with him. I'm not too crazy about always coming in every 6 months or so, but it is the law to see patients before re-approving medications for them. .. Dr. Yu is a keeper. The office staff is one of the most disorganized group of people. He has so many of them and yet there is no communication between any of them. Prescriptions are filed electronically yet they dont send them and the dont reply. The office wait is horrendous. The doctor has already mentally retired. There are other doctors. read more

My parents have been seeing Dr. Yao for over 15 years now. While it is true the wait can be up to 1-2 hours depending on how busy the office is that day/the amount of walk in patients, but Dr. Yao and all the staff try their best to be accommodating in order to see everyone in a timely manner. The new office is very modern, spacious, and comfortable with a private parking lot. Dr. Yao is very thorough by focusing on both existing conditions as well as annual preventive screenings/warning signs, which makes the long wait times worth it because he spends time making sure his patients get all the tests they need done annually. As my parents approach senior status, I appreciate everything Dr. Yao + his staff have done for them and can rest assured they will continue to be healthy as they get older. read more

I brought my mother here for a few months and the experience has been very disappointing. Once she made a 10:30 am appointment. The nurse said there was 20+ people ahead of us. The wait would have been over 2 hours. We asked the nurse, why the wait is so long, she said "that's the way it is over here". When we did see the doctor another time (this time we waited 2+ hours), the appointment was only 5 minutes because they are severely overbooked. read more

Dr. Yao has been caring for my elderly mom of 93 for the past 6 yrs & he is so caring, friendly, so respectful of my mom, and patient. He communicates well making sure you understand his explanation of his diagnosis. He's one of the best doctor my has had that I can remember during my left time. Definitely deserving a 5 stars. Before I start: I would like to give 5 star for the doctor. And negative star, if I could, to the appointment system and wait time. I am Dr yao's patient for over 13 years. While I have total confident in doctor's ability and have no complain about any visit. The waiting time, especially as of late. It's horrible. Case in point. My appointment is 11 45 am on Saturday. I am still waiting as of 2 15 pm. Last time I was told to wait 45 minutes and ended up 3 hours. The staff is it utterly incompetent in correctly estimating you waiting time. Actually they just don't tell you the truth in case you are too shocked and get a heat attack. Appointment is entirely useless on the weekend . with the time you need to wait . you might as well just build your self a time machine and come back another day. read more

really not happy with the way this dr and his staff conducts biz....they have so many patients waiting in their office to be seen....why? from my experience he takes advantage of them...wants them to come in to talk to him about results every time.....if you want referrals to additional exams he wants you to come in.....for any reason they ask you to come in....and once you get there...they are rude and make you wait so long...so you are there hours past your appt. why do they ask you to come in so often.....obviously they make money for office visits and when it cmes to paperowrk they dont use the fax or mail to send it to you.....they tell you to come in for this too...so unprofessional. In the beginning he was nice....but when he found out i had many health issues.....oddly enough for someone in his profession he stopped being friendly...... i am hearing if patients require to see a specialist it takes away from the money they receive from the insurance co......so the less they authorize the more money they receive. also, i've filled out forms over a year ago to tranfer my records to my new doctor.....discovered that this wasnt done so i have to take care of it again now.....still dont know if they will follow thru this time.....if they dont take care of it...i will complain to blue cross....maybe they will take action to remove him from their plan, especially if he has many other complaints. read more
