Extremely disappointed with my order of Yao's "Noodles with meat sauce". It's not their usual noodles and the measly little meat sauce that doesn't even tastes anything like meat sauce and the couple shredded cucumbers is laughable!!! The noodles is coated with more oil than noodles. Called and spoke to Yao. He went to the kitchen to confirm that the sauce doesn't taste that good and that is not the right noodles to use. I don't know where these negative reviews are coming from. This place is the most authentic and best spot on SI that I have had. I'm super picky about my Chinese food too. The veggies are fresh. I just don't have to drive to Chinatown anymore with all these new Chinese restaurants opening on Staten Island. Yao's Kitchen is probably the best one yet. I first started with the build your own Rice Roll, which was surprisingly massive for the price. What makes a good rice roll? The rice sheet has to hold up and not fall apart, while still melting in your mouth. There was a decent amount of pork and scallion inside too. I poured a little chili oil on top and a dash of soy sauce and it went down fast. Next were the wontons in chili oil. I expected a subdued take on this dish but it was perfectly spicy. I was disappointed not to taste any Szechuan peppercorns, but there were lots of scallion, chili peppers, and a flavorful chili oil. The wonton pasta shells were nice and thin and they were absolutely loaded with pork and chives. I think they give you 10 pieces, all for less than $8. The chicken with broccoli entree was way above average. It wasn't overly starchy and once again, the portion was massive for the price. Great chicken to broccoli ratio, and sauce didn't taste sweet or have any awful aftertaste like so many other restaurants. It had good flavor, just enough oil, and not too salty. There seemed to be a pound of chicken, sliced thin and very tender. I can't wait to try other menu items. read more

I was really looking forward to trying Yao's Kitchen after seeing the photos online, it looked like a nice dine-in experience with promising dishes. Unfortunately, the reality was a big letdown. Although it appears to be a restaurant with tables and booths, it felt more like a fast-food Chinese takeout spot. We were given paper menus and ordered some classic dishes: chicken fried rice, shrimp lo mein, and a shrimp rice roll. The rice roll was decent, but the fried rice was bland and mushy, and the chicken was dry. The lo mein had a strange aftertaste and was also overly soft, just not enjoyable overall. There were no sauces on the table, and the service was minimal. I had to call over the only staff member, who was also handling takeout orders, just to get soy sauce and a water refill. She did become a bit more attentive afterward, but by that point, my friend and I were the only guests left, so it shouldn't have taken that much prompting. It's disappointing because I really wanted to like this place. Sadly, the food and service just didn't deliver. I won't be coming back. read more

Excellent classic Szechuan food! Hot and sour soup with tofu had plenty of wood ear and enoki mushrooms, shredded vegetables and a nice kick of heat. Kung Pao chicken with peanuts was aromatic (wasn't thrilled to see celery, but it was crunchy and flavorful, a good balance to the well seasoned chicken) a nice measure for comparison with other restaurant's versions of this popular dish. Cold noodles with sesame/peanut sauce were also quite good, not sticky and easy to mix. A custom ordered vegetables with spicy garlic sauce was perfect. All the greens brightly colored, tender crisp, and the piquant sauce ample. None of the dishes were oily beyond what was necessary. It's clear that the chefs pay attention. I loved Green Garden. It's close to my house and I miss the food sometimes but I am happy that Yao's has opened in its place. First off, you can sit in there and eat. It looks very nice inside for lunch or dinner. I got a lot of food because I wanted to try a bit of things I was interested in. The menu looks more authentic than what Staten Island Chinese places usually have. It still has the common types of dishes (general tsos, beef and broccoli, etc) but also a few things I was surprised about. The food itself was super good. Best honey walnut shrimp I've had on SI, the noodles with meat sauce was really very decadent and refreshing. The chicken wings were a bit plain but the crunch and amount of chicken wings was impressive. I would definitely come back and want to try more, especially the brunch type food. Since this place is new, my food took a bit to get cooked. I had ordered online but not sure if the system wasn't working properly or if they missed my order when I got there. The host was so nice though and offered me a soft drink while I waited, definitely left me surprised in a good way. I think since they're new, they're still getting the kinks out. Place is clean, staff are amiable. Food is not bad considering how hard it is to find decent Chinese food in Staten Island.

This place took over from Green Garden. I have tried it twice ( the second time to give it the benefit of the doubt). The vegetable dumplings are all corn and peanuts and salt. I had no idea that corn was an ingredient in Chinese food. Very disappointing. read more

1st and last time coming to this restaurant. The sesame chicken was mostly dough with 20-40% chicken. The fry dumplings corn. I would rather buy frozen Chinese food from Costco than waste my money here. Also the food wasn't cheap so I was expecting a little more from this new restaurant . read more

Food was delivered promptly and hot but not too much else done right. The food is consistently bland. Fried rice, wonton soup and egg drop wonton mix soup all lacked flavor. The egg rolls were small but came 2 in an order and might have been the highlight of our order. The sesame chicken was surprisingly bland and over cooked and the meat was very dry. Beef with broccoli was ok but meat was a bit tough. The pork fried dumplings weren't too crispy and the dumpling dough was mushy and super thin. Same for the wonton soup dumplings. Also, no fried noodles given with the soup we ordered. New spot so maybe they work it out. Will give them one more try read more

The food is good but the seasoning is a hit or miss. Too much salt on the fish or no seasoning onbthe noodles.
