My friends did know that place for a many years and been there many times and recommended to try as an old school Chinese food and the establishment. I was asking about reservation, they said it's not needed-the Jade Island is huge! But we called for a reservation... I was very skeptical from the start about Chinese cuisine-not my taste, but my friends repeated about old school, classic Chinese Food! At the start-yes, the place is huge! With different shape tables -from 2 to bigger for 10 and more... Surprisingly, there were still a lot of diners at that late time... I forgot Chinese food totally and opted for a safe option- Fried rice with shrimps- very tasty, not salty..huge portion-took home half of it. We ordered Tofu with veggies-crispy veggies, Bock Choi not over- or under cooked-perfect - and tofu-delicious and family size prefix for 2 -with soups/spring rolls and main-chicken... Gosh, I still really love this place! If you haven't grown up with your family or parents having dragged you out to dinner at a place like this, you wouldn't understand. This place is so nostalgic just for the decor alone, it makes me long for the good old days! This is as American as Chinese food can get, so if you're looking for authentic Chinese food, you need to go elsewhere. This place has big portions, great service, and caters to a more American dining experience with big tables for parties or even reunions. Non-negotiable items I have to get every time I'm here: - egg rolls - big and crispy - wonton egg drop mixed - the pieces of pork are HUGE - orange chicken - perfect white chicken meat every time! - chicken and broccoli - tried and true We usually come around 5PM on a Saturday to beat the rush and it works out perfectly that we don't need to make any reservations. read more

This place is a solid 3.5. The Lunch Special Beef with Bok Choy was $17.98. The lunch specials come with wonton chips, soup, main with rice, and ice cream. Lunch started strong with prompt seating, courteous greeting, and decent hot and sour soup eating. The beef and bok choy was a generous portion, I wished they had a yu choi option but they did not. All these years of going to Staten Island and never been here and never heard of it. How did I not know about this restaurant! Lovely people when you walk in and it was lunch so we were seated right away. White linen table cloths throughout. You actually get a pot of tea that is included. There are too many places that charge for a pot of tea now. There is a lunch special but we ordered from the combination section. That comes with a choice of soup, we got the wonton. Old school wonton with nice soft slices of pork and lots of greens. Homemade noodles on the table with mustard or duck sauce for dipping. I ordered sweet and sour chicken which came with a huge egg roll and fried rice. The chicken had the lightest crispiest batter fried to perfection. My friend got the general tso's chicken that also came with fried rice and a nice portion of broccoli, nice and green perfectly cooked. Just when you think you're done the waiter asks what flavor ice cream you'd like. I chose vanilla of course and my friend got pistachio. I don't know who's ice cream they use but it was excellent! Soft enough to eat without sliding all over the bowl. Perfect end to a perfect meal! Waiter was very nice and the place including the bathroom was spotless. I never walked out of a restaurant, that is until Saturday. Took my family to Jade Island and I regret that I did. We walked in and it was NOT busy, we were a party of 4, and we were seated at a table that was clearly just wedged between 2 other tables. Tight doesnt even begin to describe how the table was. My poor son was pressed up against the table. So I asked the older man in the suit if we could move tables and with a straight face that they had no other tables which was an outright lie. The table was so tight they couldnt fit the me us and water on the table because my wife's water got spilled on her. Again asked to move tables and he still said no. At that point there was no other choice but to walk out, all because suit guy didnt want to be bothered to take 2 seconds to move us to another table. Will never go back. read more

Did pick up with some family and I loved the ambiance of the restaurant. Really cool island theme inside and I look forward to sitting in for a meal next visit. The food was amazing, top notch!! Loved the crispy noodles and house mustard. The pork fried rice was amazing, nicely loaded with everything. The vegetable chow fun was great as well, though I prefer a protein with chow fun this one was fantastic. And finally, the roast pork egg foo young. The best I've had in a long time. And the gravy was delicious too. Staff was very friendly and attentive and the food was done in excellent time. PLEASE BEWARE. I ordered pepper steak and onions, and began to have an allergic reaction. when I asked what was in the dish, I was told it contains oyster sauce, which is fish-based. There is no allergy warning on the menu indicating that this dish contains fish. When I questioned why this was not clearly labeled, I was met with hostility and told that they "can't possibly list every ingredient because people would ask them to remove stuff, which they can't do." This response was reckless, irresponsible, and unacceptable. Failing to disclose a major allergen and dismissing a legitimate safety concern puts people's lives at risk. very disappointed given the fact that I am a life long customer. The food was amazing from the delicious old style Chinese noodles with duck sauce and mustard straight to the pistachio ice cream. I had the roast pork egg foo young lunch special with brown rice and wonton soup and it was amazing. Haven't seen such large pieces of pork in egg foo young ever and haven't seen a soup that authentic since I was a kid with large pieces of pork and bok choy in the soup. The food and service is top notch! The ambiance is a bit dated. Like I walked back into 1992. I had the wonton soup and spare ribs combination. Both really really good. Since my family took me there in 1976, and my eyes were filled with wonderment as I never gazed upon anything so unique. I was just a small child, but back then a restaurant this unique stood out big time! Since then, the food has not changed very much. It was exceptional then. It's exceptional now. The "Negative reviews" are so obvious to a long time regular customer. This place (although excellent) has a bad habit of cutting corners, and not making the food up to standard when they get "Crazy Busy". Now that's no excuse, but it is what it is! That's why I get my food on a weekday usually early. After over 55 years of success, they can get away with a lot! Nowadays 99% of the Chinese restaurants on Staten Island stink! And almost all of them are take-out. There's very few "dine-in" places left that cook old school Cantonese style food. The prices have skyrocketed since COVID, but that's pretty much everywhere! I would love to know how they maintain their 1970's Era Polynesian style decor? All the cheesy bamboo and totems look good as new! Still killing it after over half a century! This is one of last of the great old school Chinese restaurants left in the city. It is a shame when you think of how Chinese food has completely gone to hell in most of the endless open kitchen take out dumps but Jade Island maintains the old great ways. From the amazing wonton soup to the perfect shrimp with lobster sauce to the great homemade krispy noodles & duck sauce to the ice cream at the end. Great kitschy Polynesian interior and all, this is exactly the way Chinese used to be served at hundreds of places in the boros. My family has been going to Jade Island since 1970 is our go to spot for Chinese food authentic Chinese dishes and Polynesian fusion make it a must try if you're in this area. It has a great decor makes you feel like you're in Hawaii and we've been going to there to celebrate birthdays for the last 50 years and it never changes and we love that. read more

The decor is a throw back, but I think it adds to the charm of the place. Service was solid, and fast. The food was hot. My issue is that none of the food was good. The best item was the spare ribs. The flavor was good, but they were so tough. The dumplings were doughy... More like the pork was wrapped in pastry. It consumed any flavor and made the dumpling chewy. The Jade Island Duck got it's flavor from the sauce only. The duck itself was overcooked, but also lacked flavored and seasoning. The beef and broccoli... Just bad. I cannot recommend this place. My family has been going there for 50 years and were regulars. John has no manners. Sometimes there are issues with their food and he doesn't like to be told that. This time it was too salty. Once my friend and I ate there and didn't like something, and he tasted it from the plate in front of us. At least do it in the kitchen. Gross. Or are we on a tropical island in the middle of the ocean...) all I can really say is that this place is awesome. The staff may be the nicest people I've ever met. A man came up to us who I believe is the manager or the owner and kept asking if everything was going alright or if there was anything he could get us. The waitstaff was quick and courteous. The food was great. The food is like an upscale version of what you can get from a typically Chinese delivery place, but with an expanded menu with some gems. The Pu Pu platter, which literally had a fire in the middle of it, was both cool as a centerpiece in the table as well as just being an EXCELLENT appetizer platter. I decided to order from Jade Island after seeing a review from a person that got wonton egg drop soup, which is one of my favorites. I ordered for a pick up. I ordered the soup,, chicken chow mein combo , Buddha's Delight and an extra eggroll. My husband said the chow mein was just OK. My soup was so disgusting that I could not even eat it. The wontons tasted like they had been sitting in that soup for days. They were a mushy mess. The broth had absolutely no flavor. The pork, although big slices ,was so hard to chew that I spit it out. The egg rolls were dripping with oil. The oil tasted like it was very, very old. The Buddha's Delight had large slices of tofu in it, which was gelatinous to say the least. I remember the Jade Island of years ago where you always got a great meal. I don't know what happened to this restaurant, but I will never order from there again. read more

Having lived on Staten Island for many years any resident realizes the culinary institution that Jade Island represents. Hell....Anthony Bourdain and David Johansen raves about it. The decor is 1960's Tiki polynesian complete with beach backgrounds, bamboo huts and cocktails served in Pineapples. The food is great complete with Pu Pu Platters. The platter contains teriyaki chicken wings, spare ribs, teriyaki beef on a stick, chicken toast and chicken wrapped in bacon complete with the fire. I love Jade Islands riff on Dim Sum, 4 pieces to an order and they are huuuuggeeee! Boneless chicken over vegetables is one of our favorite entrees, Jade Islands version is the standard floured/corn starched chicken breast but their version has wonderful shredded vegetables and mushrooms underneath. This place means a lot to my family and today I was thrilled to have my daughter try some of the best Chinese food in the world for the first time. Worth the trek coming back to SINY from the Jersey Shore for their soup , spare ribs , butterfly shrimp , and yes even the steak. For dessert a plate full of jello, pineapples, and ice cream to bring it on home. Cocktails served in a hollowed out pineapple is where it's at!
