    Korean melon candy
    Angela F.

I was shopping for groceries at Waterloo Central Supermarket, and I was happy to discover Yangyum which recently opened right by the cashiers! They serve a variety of Korean dishes for takeout such as kimbap, spicy kimchi rice, and bulgogi. It looked like their specialty is their Yangyum Fried Chicken where you get to choose your spice level. I decided to order the Bulgogi Rice ($10+ tax) to go. Oh, it was so delicious! The egg was fried perfectly, and the rice tasted so good mixed with the runny yolk. The texture of the rice was like sushi rice without the vinegar as it was sticky. The green onions added a nice crunch to the dish. The bulgogi to rice proportion was just right as there was enough to meat to cover all the rice. Also, the lady serving me was friendly and she gave Korean melon candy along with my order! Overall, I'm definitely coming back when I'm craving Korean food - would love to try their spicy kimchi rice next!

Yangyum Cup . Taste : 8.6/10 Price : $7 + tax Service ‍: 9.5/10 Worth it: 8.5/10 . Thought my blogs of Korean food were over? This time, I'm blogging Korean Fried Chicken, also known as Yangyum Cup at Yangyum: Secret Korean Recipe. This secret hotspot is located inside the Waterloo Central Supermarket which I would also highly recommend checking out if you are looking for Asian groceries. The Yangyum Cup consisted of boneless fried chicken bites tossed in Red Yangyum sauce that tasted sweet and spicy. The chicken bites were very crispy and I loved the sauce's flavour! The owners of the restaurant were very kind and gave my friends free samples of the chicken and were patient with taking our order. This place is NOT to be slept on.

Bulgogi Kimbap with Cheese ($8). A little dry, but flavours were pretty good.

Popped by after class one day to check this place out after noticing it on my last visit to the supermarket, and I must say that I wish I'd discovered it sooner. We ordered the Yangyum Chicken Cup ($7) and Bulgogi Kimbap with Cheese ($8), and the lady behind the counter was super friendly and sweet. She recommended the red sauce for the chicken (over the black sauce), and let us know that the food would take around 15 minutes to prepare. Conveniently, this little joint is tucked away in the corner of a supermarket with tons of snacks and other knick knacks, so the wait wasn't too bad at all. The chicken was great, and the sauce was probably finger lickin' good, but we were given skewers to eat with so I wouldn't know for sure. :-) The kimbap was decent, but a liiittle dry for my taste. I also couldn't really taste the cheese, so I'd opt for the regular kimbap w/ no cheese ($7) if I were to order it again. Pro tip: dip the kimbap in your leftover chicken sauce. You heard it first here, folks. Food - 3.5/5 Service - 5/5 (the lady was vvvvv friendly) Value - 4/5 Overall, a great place for a quick Korean food fix if you're looking for something on the go. Well, on-the-go with a 15-20 minute wait time. I'd definitely come back again if I'm feeling a little snacky (which is always).

SO UNDERRATED!!! This is by far the best gem in Waterloo and it's hidden inside this small indoor plaza underneath an apartment building. I religiously get take out from this place weekly and it's become my absolute favourite! I get the Korean Dosirak (which means lunchbox) and my choice of protein varies from Yangyum Chicken or Bulgogi. The Dosirak includes a little bit of everything from rice, choice of protein, vegetarian dumpling, braised potatoes, japchae, spicy cucumber salad, cabbage salad, fried egg, and tofu soup. However I ask to substitute a few of the items for more dumplings!!

    BULGOGI and rice takeout.

The people who own Yang yum are really really sweet. I ordered late night take out from them and the lady who answered was so nice and positive :D I've had the bulgogi rice which comes with a layer of bulgogi, on soft rice, a fried egg, and green onions on the side. The sunny side up egg was just right (NOTHING BETTER THAN A RUNNY YOLK AMIRITE), the bulgogi was really tender too. I think my only complaint was the lack of veggies because the green onion really is only there for the flavour. The dish otherwise is very heavy and dense. I also really like the taste/texture/quality of the rice (not the typical cheap kind from chinese take out). Overall, the dish tasted really home-made - definitely the best korean place in the plaza. Thanks Yangyum :)

This place is awesome! It's located in a little grocery store that is basically an Asian snack haven and everything is made fresh to order. It's completely no frills and authentic. We ordered the kimbap, fried chicken and their new yangyum chicken rice. The only disappointment was that they no longer serve kimchi fried rice. The kimbap is a little on the expensive side ($7) but really can't complain. Fried chicken was delicious!!! Really large pieces of chicken, heavily battered, and the sauces were really flavourful as well. I personally preferred the spicy sauce (and it's quite mild, I usually can't take very spicy) to the sweet. The yangyum sauced rice was good but I think I was just disappointed I didn't get to have kimchi fried rice (I'm still searching for a good place in KW area) This place is take out only, but it's certainly a gem. The food takes around 15-20 minutes to cook but it's no problem since you can go snack shopping while you wait. Can't wait to come back!

Great place hidden inside the Waterloo Central Supermarket! If you have a craving for Korean fried chicken, this is your best bet. Ordered the mixed combo fried chicken ($16) with half spicy, half sweet and bulgogi kimbap ($8). The lady behind the counter told us it would take around 10 minutes to prepare. While we thought it was a bit on the pricier side the food was delicious! The chicken was heavily battered and very crispy, but I'll definitely be coming back for the kimbap. Overall it was vvv good and will definitely come back to try their other dishes! (:

Chicken in a cup with red sauce.

The chicken in a cup with red sauce is really delicious and the service is friendly. The only thing I would improve is make the sauce less sweet and more garlicky and spicy like the other traditional Korean sauces that are so addictive.

Absolute amazing - a weekly staple for me and my wife. I'm a fan of their bibimbap (gotta ask for the extra gochujang sauce;) )

We were seated in a booth so it was roomy and comfortable. They had kpop playing on the TV which was nice and entertaining to watch. We ordered the spicy ricecakes and kimchi pancake as our appetizers, which were delicious! It was my first time trying the kimchi pancake, and it was so crispy and fresh. The refillable side dishes were tasty as well, particularly the kimchi radish and potatoes. There were many options on the menu to choose from but I finally settled for spicy bulgogi which comes with a bowl of rice. The spicy bulgogi came on a sizzling plate, mixed with different veggies and glass noodles. I haven't tried glass noodles in bulgogi before but I found that it was a nice addition since it carried the sauce well. It was a really yummy dish and I'd order it again. I'd recommend coming here if you're looking for a tasty and satisfying meal. Can't wait to be back for more!

The shop inside is small but had some seating if you wanted to dine in. Staff were friendly and greeted us with a smile upon entering, very welcoming! You would order at the counter and I think you pick up your food as well, we didn't dine in so I'm not sure if they do table service. The Kimbap is made fresh to order so it took them 10-15 minutes to make our order. We had ordered 4 Kimbaps and a bulgogi cup bowl dish. The cup was a bit small for the price we paid ($17 before tax/tip) but the Kimbap turned out to be very large and filling ($13-$14 each before tax/tip for the tuna and bulgogi kimbaps). Although the Kimbap was large and colourful with a lot of nice ingredients, we found a few pieces kept breaking when we were trying to pick it up to eat. It didn't hold together as nice so it made the experience a little messy with the ingredients dropping out. For the price and the Kimbap not holding together well, I'm not sure if I would come back as often. I rather get it at H-Mart for cheaper or make it myself at home. The prices are before tax and tip so it can get expensive for only 10 large pieces of Kimbap. It's worth giving the spot a try though! The Kimbap did taste pretty good and staff are friendly. They do have other items as well such as the egg sando etc.
