This was a major disappointment. I had to literally pour the standing water out of the bottom of my salad bowl when it was served, the miso soup had no tofu and the green tea was just a mug with a tea bag in it. The table was dirty and was never bussed during my visit. Will not return. read more

Nearly every time I come here, I have an issue. The food is always outstanding, but the staff and service is painful to experience. On this occasion, we waited 15 mins before receiving any drinks. After the drinks, we waited another 10-15 mins before we ordered. ( remind you, this was not a busy time. There were 6 other tables opened) My friend had gotten his order after about 15 mins after placing it. My food never came. The staff began to argue and then our waitress asked me what I ordered. I really wanted to like Yamato ... honest, I did. I work in Winchester, Tenn. and get so bored with the business lunch options. It would have been nice to add Asian food to the line up but ... The first time I visited, I ordered one of their Thai inspired Panang curry dishes. Curry dishes by nature taste rich and spicy. Their version tasted bland and had a very unappetizing watery consistency. I nearly sent it back but I only get an hour for lunch and I was starving. Despite my awful first experience, I decided to give them a second shot. This time I order the shrimp teriyaki bento box, which is supposed to be shrimp with sauteed mixed vegetables in teriyaki sauce and comes with fried rice, a spring roll and four California rolls. When it arrived, I couldn't believe my eyes: four (yes, count them, four) shrimp with sauteed onions. No carrots. No broccoli. No mushrooms. The little buggers struggled to fill up the plate. I looked around and noticed all the other diners also had plates full of fried rice with less that a 1/2 cup of the main entree. The shrimp were okay but drowning in sauce. The fried rice tasted wait too peppered. The "spring roll" was over fried. Clearly this place skimps on portions in order to increase profit. The total food cost of my $10 lunch couldn't have been more than $2. I left feeling cheated. What food I did get served was sub par at best. I won't be back. read more

I would like to thank Yamato for providing us with a truly dreadful dining experience from start to finish. Maybe because we've lived in cities and have eaten great Japanese food, our expectations for the fare in our new small-town home were too high. Regardless, at least two of the things I'm about to tell you are unforgivable no matter where you're eating. Unforgivable occurrence No. 1: We ordered glasses with our beers. When the glasses came (unchilled, by the way), mine had lipstick residue all over the rim. After waiting several minutes for our server to come to the table so I could tell her, I carried the glass to the front of the restaurant, where the hostess approached me. I explained the problem and--AFTER DEBATING WHETHER IT WAS LIPSTICK OR MERELY FINGERPRINTS (she said fingerprints)--she went into the kitchen to get me another glass. My server emerged from the kitchen with the new glass, which I inspected immediately. This one clearly had greasy fingerprints all over it, including all over the rim. So I guess at the end of the day the hostess and I were both right--LIPSTICK AND FINGERPRINTS! Needless to say, I opted to drink my beer from the bottle. Unforgivable occurrence No. 2: We ordered a tempura-breaded appetizer from the menu. Tempura batter is supposed to be crisp and cooked through. When our item arrived, it was doughy, soggy, soft, and disgusting. It was obvious that it simply hadn't been fried long enough...by a long shot. Vegetable and shrimp tempura are Japanese staples. I've gotten awesome tempura at some pretty bad Japanese restaurants; In fact, I don't think I've ever had horrific tempura until now. Getting underdone tempura at a Japanese restaurant is like getting a pile of raw julienned potatoes at a restaurant called French Fry Factory...or even McDonald's. If anyone has been plagued with the question of whether thick, undercooked tempura would be disgusting (I wasn't plagued with this question, for the record), the answer is a resounding YES, it's inedible. Aside from these things, the food was also generally bad (teriyaki chicken tasted more like black pepper than teriyaki, rice on sushi rolls was undercooked, and don't even ask about the "Yum Yum sauce" (yes, I'm serious)). The service was a joke, and our server's inexperience manifested itself in every aspect of the meal, from her lack of base knowledge about the menu and Japanese food in general to the order she brought our dishes (our soggy tempura appetizer arrived LAST, after our entrees) to general confusion about common aspects of food service. If you're a masochist and think you deserve only the worst, go to Yamato. If there's someone in your life who you hate a lot, send them to Yamato. All others steer clear of this choose your own adventure of misery. read more

We finally tried Yamato after ignoring it for a long time. Wow! We were pleasantly surprised with the quality. We usually drive an hour when we want hibachi or sushi. This has quickly become one of our favorite local restaurants. I love sushi / sashimi, although I am definitely not a sushi snob, I have enjoyed Yamato every time. My wife loves the vegetable fried rice as well. This location is small and intimate, but it is usually un crowded. I was sure excited to see a Japanese restaurant in this gastronomically challenged part of the world but was incredibly disappointed by what I found. First, I after being seated with a menu (this was lunchtime; there wasn't much to choose from) I waited nearly twenty minutes before my order was taken. In the meantime, two other tables got seated and had their orders taken. When the waitress finally came around, I ordered the teriyaki steak bento box, which comes with a California roll. I told her that I am allergic to crab, even fake crab, and asked if I could have a tuna roll instead. There's only 50 cents difference between the two on the sushi menu, so it didn't like it should be a big deal. She seemed to understand, but then brought me the tuna roll separately and the bento box with the California roll. "No substitutions" I was told when I asked (never mind that they're serving potentially fatal food), and the tuna roll was on the bill. On top of this, the wrapping on tuna roll was dry and chewy, the ginger salad dressing was creamy and bland, the fried rice tasted like soy sauce, was bland and the only flavor in the teriyaki steak came from the overcooked onions it was sitting on. I was amazed at the complete lack of taste in any of these dishes. Between the service, the attitude of the staff and less than mediocre food, I will not be back. read more

I've eaten at Yamato twice and have had a nice experience both times. The hibachi steak was well cooked and tasty both times and hubby said he enjoyed his hibachi shrimp. I was utterly shocked the second time when we went to eat with my extremely picky eight year old because he actually liked and ate his orange chicken. I tried a bit as well and thought it was quite good. My only complaint is that the veggies that come with the hibachi meals tend to be a bit overcooked and I'd prefer if it was just zucchini and onions instead of having other things like broccoli included. read more

I got the hibachi chicken lunch portion for takeout today and I asked for a little extra teriyaki sauce. The hostess looked at me and asked "what kind of sauce?" and I repeated myself again. Her final answer was "the teriyaki sauce is already cooked into the food" and looked at me as if I offended her. So not only are they stingy and rude, but do not cater fully to their customers.
