I am all about family run restaurants which this is but not at the cost of me paying them to bus my own table. Their kids are essentially the waitresses but god sake teach them how to be one. Meat was over cooked, fried rice had a weird 'old oil' smell/taste to it. Portions were small compared to other places. They do not serve both noodles and rice. You have to order noodles as add on/side order. Our kids love the noodles so we ordered but they refused to eat because noodles had that same 'old oil' smell/taste to it. Their yum yum sauce must be house made because it was terrible. Any modification is charged as extra. We sat next to a table that was never cleaned from the time we got there. The chicken pad thai is delicious, this is the only place around that I like pad thai; it is usually way too sweet for me. The sushi here rocks, it is so fresh! My personal faves of the ones that we always get are the Pearl River, the Shrimp Tempura and the Spicy Tuna. Soft drinks here come in a can. If going on the food alone this place would be 4/4.5 stars but you have to lose points when customers have to go to the counter to ask for their check and carryout boxes when there are only two tables in the whole restaurant. read more

The food is really good here. However, the service is the worst I've ever had. We have been here multiple times. When you're seated, no one takes your drink order. Once you get your food and drink, no one ever comes back over to you. We have had to get up every time to ask for a refill or the check after we have been sitting there waiting for a long time for someone to come over to us. There was a Living Social deal for Yama Sushi, which is about 6 miles from my house, so my boyfriend and I decided to check it out. We tried to find out in advance whether or not the establishment had a liquor license, but it is not mentioned on their website. Following what turned out to be false information on a third-party website, we did not bring wine with us, only to find out upon our arrival at 6 pm on a Saturday evening that it is a BYOB place. (There is a liquor store in the same strip mall.) Before we had even sat down all the way, the waitress asked for our drink orders. I ordered iced tea and my boyfriend ordered water. The waitress brought our drinks quickly. We had less than thirty seconds to peruse the substantial menu before she asked us if we were ready to order food. The place was empty except for one other table so I am not sure why the waitress was rushing us so much. It was difficult to concentrate on the menu because there were two televisions blaring CNN. Very strange choice for a sushi restaurant, and extremely disconcerting to have a news story about Guantanamo prison playing while we're trying to enjoy dinner. As I mentioned, the menu is large and has a good variety of maki. The nigiri offerings were standard -- nothing unusual in this suburban joint, which wasn't surprising. The menu is checklist-style. We chose seaweed salad, which was listed under appetizers, and several rolls. My iced tea tasted "off." It was unsweetened, which I expected (and there was no sugar or other sweetener on our table) but had a strong taste of something fishy. (And later on the receipt, I saw that the iced tea, which we were charged for even though I sent it back, was called "sweet tea.") The other table of customers left after their meal ended and my boyfriend and I were the only customers in the restaurant. I believe one person came in to pick up a carryout order. About 15 minutes passed and we were trying hard to ignore the blaring television, but it was impossible. During this time, we decided that the atmosphere was so unpleasant that we would rather just eat a few bites and get the rest of our food to go. The waitress brought our sushi on one large platter, as is common in sushi places. That was fine with us. We were pleasantly surprised that the sushi looked and tasted good. A mango roll was reminiscent of the Thai dessert mango with sticky rice. The orange flamingo roll was also particularly delicious. Everything seemed fresh and was prepared with care. Unfortunately, our service continued to be dismal. We were not given small plates to eat our sushi, and instead we had to hover over the large platter until I asked for individual plates. We had never been brought our seaweed salad appetizer before the meal, and we had to ask for that, too. No apologies were ever made for any of these service mistakes, by the way. After a few minutes of eating, music was suddenly turned on. But the televisions also remained on, so there was an annoying clash of sounds. We couldn't stand to be there anymore, so we took most of our food to go and enjoyed it at home. If I lived closer to Yama I might consider getting takeout food from them, but I will never eat there again, unless I hear that they've done a substantial reworking of their service. I can make concessions for forgotten food items when a place is jam-packed, but we were literally the only customers most of the time we were there. And the televisions are a total deal-breaker, too. In a city with tons of sushi choices, Yama is going to have to shape up quickly. read more

Sushi is just okay, nothing special. They use way too much rice on their maki and nigiri. What is special is they charge extra money to add cucumbers to their Yellowtail Roll. $1 per roll, to be exact. Since you can likely make ~200 Yellowtail Rolls with a single cucumber that costs less than a dollar, I'd say that's a pretty hefty profit margin they're hauling in there. Whatever the case, adding $3 to my ~$40 order to add something which comes standard on every other Japanese restaurant's Yellowtail Roll, cost this nickel-and diming restaurant a long-term patron as a customer. read more

My most recent visit was very disappointing after a long pause. I've been a number of times and in the past, we've ordered basic dishes and been pretty happy with the product and the price. This time, maybe the quality was down, or our expectations raised, I'm not sure...some things didn't seem fresh. Not the fish, because we didn't get sick, but the tempura flakes used for "crunchy" rolls. The rice didn't seem to be sushi quality, the fish wasn't flavorful. It was just very mediocre. Whereas I would have recommended this place in the past, now I wouldn't - if you want sushi, go out of your way and go to Minato or something. If you're more interested in convenience and this is the closest place, just keep your order very basic - salmon or tuna rolls, nothing with slower turnover or more than 3 ingredients. The miso soup is right out of an instant kit, too. Seriously, you could make a better sushi meal yourself for cheaper by making a trip to H-Mart. However, it's not like it's actively bad...though the televisions do detract from what atmosphere they're trying for. The sushi is actually really tasty and they have a nice assortment. It reminds me of sushi from The Orient but better. The atmosphere leaves alot to be desired. The carpet is dingy and bleh. I do agree the tv is distracting especially because it kept catching my eye but my dinner partner could not see, so it just became an annoyance. And the reason why I rate this place so low is the waitress was chomping on her gum the entire time she served us! First, that is a huge pet peeve of mine. Second, I find it disgusting and unsanitary to be served food with somebody openly chewing gum to the point I could smell the mint and hear that annoying sound. This is my go to place for fresh sushi. I have tried some other sushi places both in the city and the burbs and I always come back to Yama. Sushi is always fresh and I love the tempura , sashimi's and the House rolls. I have tried the shrimp and chicken pad Thai and they are good too. It is located in a strip mall is not had to miss. There is a nice selection of options, easy parking, and a laid-back atmosphere. My favorite is the wonton soup, which is the best in the area. They use just a touch of ginger, which is delicious. This is my number 1 sushi joint. Angry dragon roll is awesome. Dumplings are great as well as green salad with ginger dressing. It's quiet and byob. Great hideaway place and not too busy like chopsticks. Great hibachi steak and scallops never been disappointed. Id like to update my review. Still my #1 sushi spot in Perry Hall. From the samurai roll to the red dragon toll. Tuna nigiri is always fresh and rice cooked and tastes wonderful and fresh as well .Thai soup, gyoza and great deal on the bento lunch boxes.
