We have ordered take out from Yama in the past but for the first time we decided to dine in. We were the only ones there which made me sad because this is a wonderful establishment!! They have plenty of seating, it is clean, and the service was on point. The fish is fresh and the appetizers were hot and crunchy. Overall a great experience. There is something different about enjoying sushi at the restaurant versus home and I highly recommend showing them some more love! read more

Placed an order for takeout. They said it would take 20-30 minutes, and when I arrived 30 min later my order was ready and waiting for me. It appears that the inside dining is not open, so they're just doing takeout orders right now. My order was gyoza, seaweed salad, double crab roll and volcano roll. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! Highly recommend the volcano roll which is a tempura roll of tuna, salmon, avocado and spicy crab meat with flaming special spicy sauce. It's delicious! An explosion of flavors and textures in your mouth. read more

I visited Yama Sushi on a Saturday night and was surprised to be the only diner. Despite the quiet atmosphere, the food was good. I had the Baltimore Roll B, the Angry Dragon Roll, and the Mountain Roll. All the rolls were great. The service was pretty average but this seems like a family-owned restaurant so I wasn't expecting too much. Over all this was a solid experience. You can tell that they put a lot of effort into their food and I think it deserves some more business. read more

I visited Yama Sushi this past Saturday night and was very surprised. Being the only table sat within the restaurant was a little jarring at first, but I was quickly impressed with the speedy service and great quality of food. I ordered the Baltimore Roll (B), the Angry Dragon Roll and the Volcano Roll. All the rolls were great, especially the Baltimore Roll! We also ordered the Pork Gyoza which was pretty okay. The service itself was pretty average as it seems the owner's children work tables and to-go, but this seems like a family-owned restaurant so I wasn't expecting too much. Overall this was a solid experience and you can tell that they put a lot of love into their food. Despite its shortcomings I think this place deserves a lot more business and would fully recommend others give this place a try. read more

Ok. Sushi is good. Service is subpar. This is a family run joint. They have their children helping out. So sometimes you just need to help them out as I know you are paying but not much expectation. I've been coming here when they open by Italian sensations and needed bigger facility. Plus side it's BYOB and the liquor store down the street can deliver. Why do I come back? It's good sushi and can't really ask for much more Solid 3 stars. ProTip: order the soft shell crab appetizer read more

Really nice, lowkey spot for good sushi. Can't complain at all. I had some gyoza and the hawaiian roll.

Amazing lunch date- food was phenomenal. Staff is friendly and quick. Good prices, speciality roll was out standing. We also got a combo platter of general tso's to share with fried rice. Plenty for two people to share with sushi. Fried rice was brown... I'm not a fan of yellow fried rice and very very flavorful read more

I am all about family run restaurants which this is but not at the cost of me paying them to bus my own table. Their kids are essentially the waitresses but god sake teach them how to be one. We had to get up and ask for everything ourselves. They never check back. As for the food, the sushi that my wife ordered was GOOD, the hibachi dinner that I ordered left much to the imagination. Meat was over cooked, fried rice had a weird 'old oil' smell/taste to it. Portions were small compared to other places. They do not serve both noodles and rice. You have to order noodles as add on/side order. Our kids love the noodles so we ordered but they refused to eat because noodles had that same 'old oil' smell/taste to it. Their yum yum sauce must be house made because it was terrible. Any modification is charged as extra. We sat next to a table that was never cleaned from the time we got there. I may order sushi again but as take out! read more

Yama Sushi - Tables that never get cleaned up - Sushi Bars Near Me - Perry Hall, Maryland

Service here can be excruciatingly slow so be sure to allow ample time if dining in. If you live where they deliver, note that they have a $2 delivery charge. The chicken pad thai is delicious, this is the only place around that I like pad thai; it is usually way too sweet for me. The sushi here rocks, it is so fresh! My personal faves of the ones that we always get are the Pearl River, the Shrimp Tempura and the Spicy Tuna. Soft drinks here come in a can. If going on the food alone this place would be 4/4.5 stars but you have to lose points when customers have to go to the counter to ask for their check and carryout boxes when there are only two tables in the whole restaurant. read more

There was a Living Social deal for Yama Sushi, which is about 6 miles from my house, so my boyfriend and I decided to check it out. We tried to find out in advance whether or not the establishment had a liquor license, but it is not mentioned on their website. Following what turned out to be false information on a third-party website, we did not bring wine with us, only to find out upon our arrival at 6 pm on a Saturday evening that it is a BYOB place. (There is a liquor store in the same strip mall.) Before we had even sat down all the way, the waitress asked for our drink orders. I ordered iced tea and my boyfriend ordered water. The waitress brought our drinks quickly. We had less than thirty seconds to peruse the substantial menu before she asked us if we were ready to order food. The place was empty except for one other table so I am not sure why the waitress was rushing us so much. It was difficult to concentrate on the menu because there were two televisions blaring CNN. Very strange choice for a sushi restaurant, and extremely disconcerting to have a news story about Guantanamo prison playing while we're trying to enjoy dinner. As I mentioned, the menu is large and has a good variety of maki. The nigiri offerings were standard -- nothing unusual in this suburban joint, which wasn't surprising. The menu is checklist-style. We chose seaweed salad, which was listed under appetizers, and several rolls. My iced tea tasted "off." It was unsweetened, which I expected (and there was no sugar or other sweetener on our table) but had a strong taste of something fishy. (And later on the receipt, I saw that the iced tea, which we were charged for even though I sent it back, was called "sweet tea.") The other table of customers left after their meal ended and my boyfriend and I were the only customers in the restaurant. I believe one person came in to pick up a carryout order. About 15 minutes passed and we were trying hard to ignore the blaring television, but it was impossible. During this time, we decided that the atmosphere was so unpleasant that we would rather just eat a few bites and get the rest of our food to go. The waitress brought our sushi on one large platter, as is common in sushi places. That was fine with us. We were pleasantly surprised that the sushi looked and tasted good. A mango roll was reminiscent of the Thai dessert mango with sticky rice. The orange flamingo roll was also particularly delicious. Everything seemed fresh and was prepared with care. Unfortunately, our service continued to be dismal. We were not given small plates to eat our sushi, and instead we had to hover over the large platter until I asked for individual plates. We had never been brought our seaweed salad appetizer before the meal, and we had to ask for that, too. No apologies were ever made for any of these service mistakes, by the way. After a few minutes of eating, music was suddenly turned on. But the televisions also remained on, so there was an annoying clash of sounds. We couldn't stand to be there anymore, so we took most of our food to go and enjoyed it at home. If I lived closer to Yama I might consider getting takeout food from them, but I will never eat there again, unless I hear that they've done a substantial reworking of their service. I can make concessions for forgotten food items when a place is jam-packed, but we were literally the only customers most of the time we were there. And the televisions are a total deal-breaker, too. In a city with tons of sushi choices, Yama is going to have to shape up quickly. read more

Sushi is just okay, nothing special. They use way too much rice on their maki and nigiri. What is special is they charge extra money to add cucumbers to their Yellowtail Roll. $1 per roll, to be exact. Since you can likely make ~200 Yellowtail Rolls with a single cucumber that costs less than a dollar, I'd say that's a pretty hefty profit margin they're hauling in there. Whatever the case, adding $3 to my ~$40 order to add something which comes standard on every other Japanese restaurant's Yellowtail Roll, cost this nickel-and diming restaurant a long-term patron as a customer. read more

Sushi is delicious, service is awful. I've been here numerous times, mostly because of their coupons in Val Pak, but their is never anyone is there! Maybe one or two other tables, tops. Which works for me since I have a two year old and dinning out can be hard. At least this way I don't feel like I'm ruining someone else's meal! The sign says they open at 11:00, but we came at 11:15 once and they weren't open. Tried calling, and it just rang and rang. All in all, I go back. It's cheap, sushi is good, it's quiet, I can bring my kid. I can deal with a less than friendly waitress! read more

The sushi didn't seem all that great. I feel that I've had better pretty much everywhere else I've gotten sushi ( save for the grocery store ). Service was decent, but that may have been partially due to the restaurant being nearly empty. Not sure I'd recommend this place to a friend. read more

Barely a 3. Sushi was extremely mediocre. Just a cut above grocery store quality. Service was okay, considering there was only one server for the whole restaurant. I was glad to find they have a beer and liquor license. It's nice that they often include a complementary roll. No real crab meat at this restaurant - crab stick only. I'd recommend Sushi Hana on Falls Rd for 4-star sushi and San Sushi Too in Towson for 5-star. read more

The food is really good here. However, the service is the worst I've ever had. We have been here multiple times. When you're seated, no one takes your drink order. Once you get your food and drink, no one ever comes back over to you. We have had to get up every time to ask for a refill or the check after we have been sitting there waiting for a long time for someone to come over to us. The waitress is not very friendly and I find to be rather rude. We are normally the only ones in the restaurant when we go. They have never been busy. read more

My most recent visit was very disappointing after a long pause. I've been a number of times and in the past, we've ordered basic dishes and been pretty happy with the product and the price. This time, maybe the quality was down, or our expectations raised, I'm not sure...some things didn't seem fresh. Not the fish, because we didn't get sick, but the tempura flakes used for "crunchy" rolls. The rice didn't seem to be sushi quality, the fish wasn't flavorful. It was just very mediocre. Whereas I would have recommended this place in the past, now I wouldn't - if you want sushi, go out of your way and go to Minato or something. If you're more interested in convenience and this is the closest place, just keep your order very basic - salmon or tuna rolls, nothing with slower turnover or more than 3 ingredients. The miso soup is right out of an instant kit, too. Seriously, you could make a better sushi meal yourself for cheaper by making a trip to H-Mart. However, it's not like it's actively bad...though the televisions do detract from what atmosphere they're trying for. I'm rounding up to 3 stars due to some good experiences in the past but it really didn't measure up to my memory (which wasn't of a stand-out place, just a good value). read more

Yama Sushi - So yummy! - Sushi Bars Near Me - Perry Hall, Maryland

The sushi is actually really tasty and they have a nice assortment. It reminds me of sushi from The Orient but better. The atmosphere leaves alot to be desired. The carpet is dingy and bleh. I do agree the tv is distracting especially because it kept catching my eye but my dinner partner could not see, so it just became an annoyance. And the reason why I rate this place so low is the waitress was chomping on her gum the entire time she served us! First, that is a huge pet peeve of mine. Second, I find it disgusting and unsanitary to be served food with somebody openly chewing gum to the point I could smell the mint and hear that annoying sound. I thought that was a big server no-no and I would make a return visit if it was not for this. read more

When choosing a sushi spot, my wife always chooses Yama -- a family-run business. The sushi rolls are always well-made, fresh, and tasty. The restaurant is always clean, with friendly service. There is a nice selection of options, easy parking, and a laid-back atmosphere. My favorite is the wonton soup, which is the best in the area. They use just a touch of ginger, which is delicious. We have lived in the area for 7 years, and enjoy the food from this restaurant around once every 2 weeks. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. read more

This is my number 1 sushi joint. Angry dragon roll is awesome. Dumplings are great as well as green salad with ginger dressing. It's quiet and byob. Great hideaway place and not too busy like chopsticks. Great hibachi steak and scallops never been disappointed. Id like to update my review. Still my #1 sushi spot in Perry Hall.
