Maybe my favourite breakfast I ever had. So many options, I recently unfortunately stopped being able to eat gluten and to my delight almost evening on the menu is gluten free, including the treats! I had the breakfast set menu with sockeye salmon and white rice. The fish was cooked perfectly, same for the rice. Portion sizes were absolutely perfect and the Japanese pickles were my favourite. All the dishes the food is served in are so cute which definitely matches the rest of the vibe inside the restaurant. Love their breakfast set! You can choose either the salmon or mackerel and it comes with miso soup, japanese pickles, veggie salad, soft boiled egg, and a slice of orange (for $16.95)! It was so well balanced and the fish was perfectly seasoned and grilled! Also got a Tuna Tataki Bowl ($15, and +$6 for making it into a combo) and it was delicious too! The black sesame latte was a little too milky and we liked the matcha latte more! Finished off the meal with a strawberry roll cake, and it was so fresh! Can't wait to come back again! read more

Return or Not return? Likely. Odd user experience and loss of one star immediately. I absolutely get offended when I get asked to prepay/tip and when I've had no service (and haven't tasted the food). That's what they did. And forgot to mention it's 11:15am, 2 other tables all of whom have their food, and yet I'm still waiting and waiting. Slow slow. And another btw, sign on the table that limits to "1 hour seating limit when we get busy". How can that be? All you really sell is pork belly and tuna tataki? Are customers enamored bc they are Japanese? If so, let's stop the nonsense that you have to be Japanese to make Japanese food well. Now the food? I had the tataki and it was very delicate, with a vinaigrette type sauce on the rice. Pleasant and arguably "created with love". It's not over the top, but likable. A nice little cafe that serves Japanese food and treats! They have great lunch sets and they also offer omakase meals at night if you book in advance. I highly recommend this because not only does Yama make your menu based on your request but you also get to have the cafe to yourself so it's such an intimate setting! I'm not impressed very often but I certainly was on my visit. The morning set included miso soup, a bowl of rice, Japanese pickles, a small salad, onsen tamago, fruits and a choice of protein. You can pick between sockeye salmon and mackerel and I got the sockeye salmon. Honestly this was a fairly simple meal but it was so delicious and I absolutely loved it. The salmon was marinated so it's on the saltier side but it's perfect to pair it with the rice. I personally love mixing the onsen egg to the rice, because the rice can absorb all the runny yolk. I couldn't leave without getting their bake goods! Their mochi muffin was as good as how I remembered, super soft and chewy. The monaka was something new that I tried, it was sooo cute and I couldn't resist. I really enjoyed everything I had and I love their vibe and wooden furnishings. Yama is an incredible cafe that serves Japanese food and cafe treats. However, a little known fact is that they also offer omakase meals at night! You have to book these in advance and they take all your preferences into account. The omakase is top-notch for a very reasonable price and feels exactly like what you would experience in Japan or at a high end omakase restaurant in Vancouver. Nice little Japanese cafe with a homey feel with lots of vegan options. They're only open for lunch (Tue-Sat: 9am-3pm), so I stopped in for lunch one day and ordered their vegan bowl ($13) with 8-grain rice ($1), and added a small miso soup ($2), and a couple of mini-"muffins" since they are all vegan ($1 each; I got azuki [red bean] and black sesame). They brought my food out in about 10 minutes. The presentation is very colourful and aesthetically pleasing, with creative items on there. You get all sorts of interesting stuff in there, though what's listed on their website didn't exactly match what I got. One of the nicest things in there was the bok choy covered in this interesting black dressing (black sesame maybe?). Everything works harmoniously and feels pretty healthy (not oily or anything). Reasonable portion, though I could've done with a little more substance. The mini-muffins were both really tasty: not too sweet, with nice texture. I wanted to like this cozy, little cafe on East Hastings. I've heard lots of positive reviews and passed by various times, but never stopped by until recently. It's worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood, but I won't be returning anytime soon. I had been wanting to come here for months and traveled from WA to try it out and was thoroughly impressed. 5 stars for quality of food (ordered to go and it was still plated beautifully and thoughtfully) as well as service. I came in right before 11 am and was still able to try the Morning Set that I had been wanting to try since I first saw their menu this year. I really wanted Japanese breakfast and found this spot. From downtown, it's about a 20 minute bus ride away and it was easy enough to get to. We were immediately enamored with the cute decor of the cafe. The wait is moderate so I wouldn't recommend eating here if you're in a hurry but this place is perfect for slow mornings. Our food was delicious and you could really tell that the chef was extremely detailed and put a lot of thought into the pairings. We got one matcha latte and one strawberry latte. We tried this place for the first time when we visited Vancouver for a day trip. After searching on Yelp, my daughter wanted good Matcha latte so we decided to stop by. The variety of baked goods that are mostly gluten free was something we're very interested due to my daughter's Paleo diet. They had brownies made of avocado, Mochi muffins made of rice, etc.. My daughter who has sweet tooth didn't seem to like her non sugarly matcha latte. But I love it very much that it had very intense matcha flavor. I absolutely adore Yama Cafe. In fact, I love it so much that I almost don't want to write about it because it's already quite busy in there. I ordered the Pork Belly Bowl and added the lunch set (additional Japanese pickles, 1 mini muffin and soup), extra avocado and extra egg. All this was enough between my daughter and I, but keep in mind she is a small and picky eater too. We ate every last bite. The pork belly was soft and marinated well. I miss East Hastings. It has always held its own, developing a unique subculture and character. It is now filled with a mix of chains and franchises, but the small indies are still the drivers, and the ones that hold the community together. Yama Cafe is one of them, to me. Make no mistake. Clearly, it's a Japanese operation. Yet, it has a strong East Van flavour (no pun intended). On one hand, it is sprinkled with Japanese influences here and there in the store. The miniature branches with succulents plants on the counter (and elsewhere around the store). But note the subtle branding on the branch with their Yama logo. The staff's dress code is hip and very....Vancouver. Each worker looks unique and that's us! The place is cramped hut everybody is happy. The Japanese word "Wa" comes to mind. "Wa" 和 is loosely translated as harmony. There's a sense of unity amidst the congestion. Everybody seems to know and find their way around the tables and chairs. So with that, I don't think I need to go much into the food and drink I had....but, but, but boy! Did you see that elephant latte art I got for my matcha!? How cool is that? Timing worked out for me as I got there after 2pm and their special set kicked in. I was able to enjoy a matcha cafe latte and their homemade strawberry cheesecake as a set. Yama Cafe has been on my list of places to try for too long. They're a cafe that specializes in Japanese baked goods. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 1:00pm) and it was packed. Service is friendly and sweet in typical Japanese fashion. There's a menu up on the wall when you first walk in along with a few other signs. Afternoon dessert tea is from 2:00pm to 4:00pm ($6.95). They make their own ice cream. Gimme a scoop of houjicha! Baked goods consist of mochi muffins, cookies, brownies, daifuku and dorayaki. They had a couple packs of mochi muffins ($3.00 for 5) that disappeared quickly. - Matcha latte ($4.00) - they use good quality matcha. Latte was well balanced (B opted for half sweet). - 5x Mochi muffin ($1.00 each) - we tried the houjicha, kurogoma sesame, earl grey, azuki red bean and matcha. Muffins had a good texture and weren't too sweet. - Tuna tataki ($12.95) - tuna tataki, white rice, salad, pickled daikon, ponzu sauce, ginger and Japanese chili pepper. The pepper added a touch of heat to the tuna. Tuna was fresh and again, good quality. - Pork belly ($11.95) - boiled pork belly, teriyaki sauce, half boiled egg, white rice and a salad with cabbage pickles. We added the lunch set ($4.00) which included nukazuke (Japanese pickles), vegetable appetizer, daily soup and a mochi muffin (espresso flavour). Mushroom soup was homemade and not too creamy. Loved the pickled carrots, celery and cucumber. The vegetables were just as good; mushroom, corn, tomato, wakame and green beans (with a delicious wasabi sauce on top). This is a quaint little Japanese restaurant in an unassuming location. I searched for a new place in this area, and Yama popped up. There are some nice choices of food. I love tuna tataki, so I was happy to see it on the menu. You can get it over regular rice, or pay an extra dollar to have it on mixed greens or grain rice. I was surprised that it cost a dollar more for greens as that is the lighter option. I got about 7 perfectly seared slices of tuna on greens with an umami-like sauce. It tasted fabulous, but I think $13.95 is a steep price for the amount. They also have bowls of the day. Today it was lavender salmon bowl. Interesting. Wonder how that tastes. They have a ffew other food options, but it's not a large menu. Plus, you can order baked goods like cookies and mini muffins. The mini muffin at $1.95 is too much, but 50 cents for a mini cookie seems fair. Coffee and tea are also available. The environment is interesting. There's a small play area for children at the front of the shop. The rest of the seating is comfortable and the place has Japanese hints of style. read more

We found this place by fluke as I saw it on a friend's Instagram story as she ordered some reusable masks from Yama Cafe's collaboration with a different vendor. Mr 12 was very hungry and he ordered pork belly bowl. I really didn't know what to expect but we were so happy that we ordered it. The bowl was absolutely delicious, melt in your mouth pork belly slices, a perfect amount of rice, nicely dressed greens, and beautifully cooked egg. I ended up ordering the tuna tataki bow after I saw the bowl that Mr 12 ordered. The tuna tataki bowl didn't disappoint either! Perfectly seared melt in your mouth tuna, thinly sliced, and came with rice and salad. We also ordered some moffin (mochi x muffin), so it has a texture of a mochi but in a mini muffin form. Got the hojicha, matcha, and plain. All were very good! I can taste the hojicha also the matcha on each of the them: Really delicious. The owners are very gracious and very friendly, displaying their Japanese hospitality. I wished that they're close by my area.. I'd love to come back to try more things on their menu (and just have them on repeat!) Yama is a nice and small Japanese café along the East Hastings neighborhood. It's a gem for this area. It's nice and quiet. Soft music plays in the background. This is a family run business. They have kids that are around as the family works. It's incredible that the father works while carrying his son on his back. Yama has been around for a couple of years now. The food is very good. And the staff isn't slow in preparing for the dishes either. It's a reasonable amount of time considering that it's only 1-2 people making the food for their customers. It does get pretty busy at the restaurant especially during the weekends. They're not good for large groups coming in (10+). This is a place for small groups 3-4 people. Ideally for 2 people at a time. We ordered the Grilled Fish Set. It was actually surprisingly enough and we were full when we finished everything in the set. The other dish we ordered was the Pork Belly. That was great as well. The Pork Belly was tender and flavor-able! Nice and tasty!! The ambiance was nice and light. Lots of Japanese decor. It's a nice and gentle environment. Nothing too overbearing. We taking can be hard to find around the area. Not much else to say here. There is a few spots in front of the restaurant. Other than that. You'd have to walk quite a ways if you can't find a parking spot closer to Yama. Price wise it's a little expensive. We ordered two drinks, a kids set meal, two set adult meals for $55 after this and tax. That's not cheap. We don't come here too often but when we do the food doesn't disappoint that's for sure. Cute Japanese style café. I loved my first experience that I had to come back when in town. I was excited to get their morning set again but did not expect it to be sold out by 10am. I went on a Friday morning and the place was packed, mostly because there was a group of parents with their toddlers. I was hungry so I ordered their toast with black sesame butter because that intrigued me. It was simple but quite tasty. The matcha latte was good as well. The matcha was prominent which is what I love. I ordered two bowls to go, I feel they are slightly on the pricey side for the portion, especially the vegetarian one, but nonetheless tasty. Yum, so good! It brought me back... Ok so the food. It was good!!! The tuna tataki was full of flavour and a little kick as well, which I loved. The dressing light and refreshing. The pickled daikon was a nice touch. That potato soup so tasty. The little pickled side veggies were good, not my favourite but completed the combo. Wanted to like it so bad as a reliable go-to place for Japanese breakfast, but instead, it was a bust with an utter long list of disappointments reflecting a total lack of professionalism. Before I get to the overpriced poir quality food, the first miss is they think their restaurant is a daycare, and it creates an unsanitary and disturbing environment. Two young boys were playing all around the front of the restaurant and were very loud. Their toys were littered all around one of the only two larger tables in the front. The kids also kept running back and forth into the kitchen, with one putting his face right into the plate where our food was being staged, breathing all over our food which was at the same level right in front of his face. Completely unsanitary. This was the first clue why they so rudely demanded that we pay up front before any of the food was served dining in, which also sucked. The back of the restaurant was more congested, and the restroom was completely inaccessible, barricaded by bicycles. We had to ask them to remove all of that to go to the restroom as they had no clue. It's like dining in a chaotic noisy home. There was no resemblance to the peace, tranquility, and hospitality to see in some restaurants. The food was very mixed, but in several cases, terrible taste and quality.. The grilled salmon was terribly over salted and had no taste or flavor besides being drowned in too much salt. Assume it was poor quality fish or not fresh if they need to prepare and serve it that way. Their tea, which they claimed to be sencha, tasted like the cheapest, worst stale commercial tea you can find anywhere. It was void of any enjoyment due to the poor quality. The miso soup was lousy and weird and not different in any good way. The salad was edible but nothing special. Other side dishes, including the whole grain rice bowl, pickels, and other cold dishes, were better, but nothing wowed. If people think they can give this place 4 or 5 stars, well, I wonder if they ate at the same restaurant. It wasn't cheap, and some people that came in were literally very filthy and touching and handling many things around the front counter. If I had to sum up the experience, it was a mix of eating in a soup kitchen or somebody's crowded messy house where the food isn't very good, but you still spend over $50 for breakfast for two. The concept was great, and it's wonderful to have Japanese restaurants that try to serve an interesting and healthy Japanese breakfast. The cafe also has a small play area for kids. They offer a wide selection of sweets, from cookies to cake. My favourite treats there are the Moffins (bite size mochi muffins) and their cookies. I highly recommend getting a few of each to try, especially the Moffins! They are absolutely delicious and at an affordable price as well. We also ordered some food along with our sweets. We got the chashu pork bowl and a tuna lunch set. The chashu was heavenly. There was absolutely no gamy flavour from the pork and it was super tender (making me wonder if it really is pork). I have to say this place is my #1 secret Japanese breakfast + lunch / coffee place in town. Their Japanese style mochi cake tastes the best, good with any kind of drink. Never too sweet or too plain. Lunch set is always very yummy and very beautiful. Food is very fresh. Don't even mention they have Lots of drink choice. Store is very clean and well-organized. I can always fell the owner's heart upon the food when I ate there. Highly recommend !
