I went to see Dr. Matsumoto and his team in March of this year. It was an annual physical, but it…read morewas billed as both an annual physical and a regular office visit, so I had to pay a significant amount even though annual physicals are free with my insurance. Dr. Matsumoto was also running extremely late (I was in the room, freezing in that gown, for 30 mins) and we had a short appointment. I learned from my insurance company that as soon as you mention that *anything* is not 100% normal (e.g. "oh, my knees hurt sometimes") during an annual physical, doctors are allowed to report that the visit is now "more than a physical" and bill you for it (and they get paid more too!). I have never had a doctor do this to me, but Dr. Matsumoto did. Even the insurance company agreed that it was done in poor taste. Later, I found out that Dr. Matsumoto had ordered tests that we *explicitly* talked about not needing. I wanted to get a stool sample done for colon cancer as it runs in my family. The doctor and I talked about how I did *not* need to get tested for Giardia, Salmonella, or E. Coli due to my lifestyle (no camping, no unfiltered water, no meat, etc.). To my surprise, I was later billed for all these other tests. I tried to resolve this with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Dr. Matsumoto himself over several months, and they refused to help. They charged me $240 for the "free" annual physical and $370 for these tests I did not want. On top of that, the entire time I was trying to get this situation fixed, Palo Alto Medical Foundation would not stop harassing me. They sent paper bills and e-communication constantly. My insurance company said that during disputes, the providers are not supposed to harass their patients for payment, but they did. 0 stars for both Dr. Matsumoto and Palo Alto Medical Foundation. I will not be returning to either the provider or the network.

I could hear his comments. Then he passed. a spot that looked like a sesame seed (I'm not kidding) and I had a salad with sesame seeds on it about 4 days prior. I guess the prep didn't get everything. So I commended on eating the salad. Dr Young went berserk. He screamed at me, "You should be sedated!!!" He screamed at the nurse. Within minutes I was heavely sedated and it took me more than the regular time to wake up. I did not think waking up during the procedure was my fault. I was in no pain. No need to lose it! I was awake of at least 8 minutes and it was fun to watch. What's up with his temper? Screaming at me? Nope.

I had recently scheduled a routine colonoscopy exam for my elderly mother. She had been a regular patient of Dr. Young's for years. We had to reschedule her exam due to a conflict. We notified his office nearly four weeks in advance about the need to reschedule. Their cancellation policy states that patients need to give them at least 7 days notice to reschedule or face a possible cancellation fee. We respectfully followed their cancellation policy. No problem right? When my mother called to confirm her rescheduled appointment, we were shocked at their response. His office said she would have to pay close to $300 in appointment rescheduling fees - even though we had clearly followed their rules. We had cancelled her exam well ahead of time. If she did not agree to paying this fee, his office would drop her as a patient. What type of medical professional does this? Is this how you treat an elderly woman who has been a regular, loyal patient of yours for years? All this for $300? Is this type of behavior even ethical? I am shocked, disappointed and upset at how she have been treated. I am appalled at how his office has refused to honor its own rules when patients have dutifully followed them. No one deserves to be treated so disrespectfully and dishonestly like this. No one!

Test results take a really long time and it's on you to follow up with them in order to receive them, as they don't bother contacting you in my experience. He only comes in a few days a week now, and when I've called for various issues I'm always told that someone from the care team will call me back shortly, but they never do. Unfortunately, this is leading me to reconsider him as my primary care doctor and I'm looking elsewhere.
