I'm not sure what possessed me to agree to go to a club. I guess I was curious if clubbing in London was any different. Ironic that it was Valentino Khan spinning that night since I could see him any time in LA. Ambience: This club was so dingy and hot. The lights and disco ball were on point though. Having very low ceilings made it feel claustrophobic. There were also platforms that people could dance on. I'm not sure if that's the best thing for drunk people though. The platforms made it difficult to see the artist if you were standing in the back. Bouncers: shoutout to the bouncers. They were vigilant and made sure everyone stayed in line (without being unnecessary). They totally made my experience just a little bit better. I saw them break up a fight before it even started. They quickly yanked a guy out of the women's restroom before he was even able to get both feet in. Also, they cleared the pathway for me when they saw me struggling to get through the crowd with two drinks in my hand. Drinks: it was $5 pounds for a mixed drink. Bad reviews for XOYO could be said about literally any dance club: crowded, hot, creepy guys, expensive drinks, whatever. The difference is the vibe. Typical dance clubs look like middle school dances with men on the prowl and girls screaming it's their birthday. XOYO wasn't even in the same realm. I went on the night they switched party planning agencies and it was possibly the most epic night i've ever spent at a club. The cover was 7 pounds, no bigs. The line was long extending down the street but moved fast. When you walk in there are 2 floors the upper one being (ironically) a bit of a downer. But when we went down the basement level... my gosh... the room was literally moving. The DJ onstage was playing the best hip hop has to offer with the smoothest transitions - timing them to perfection. He had his whole posse on stage hyping the crowd up, people were moshing, every man woman & child was dancing their faces off, it was madness. In the venue there are multiple stages for anyone to get up on so we bounced around a little bit from stage to stage before finding a spot on the floor. There is no room to breathe or even think but you're probably too wasted at that point to care. For 1-2 hours the nonstop rager that is the XOYO basement becomes your only reality. Don't fight it. 5 stars for grade A, unpasteurized, insanity. read more

One of my favourite clubs in the city. It's up there with MoS as a great location for EDM. They consistently have a killer lineup and a fun crowd. Layout: There are two rooms. The ground floor room is the more chilled out area. Generally less intense music, less crowded, slightly brighter and just a lot less hectic. Nice place to get a few drinks at the start of the night or just to come up and chill for a bit if you feel overwhelmed. There's then the downstairs main room. It's always pretty rammed but it's a fun dancey crowd so no one really pushes or shoves too much. Some cool lasers and lights so that's always a plus. Sound can be weirdly soft at certain areas (for instance, on the stage), but beyond that it's pretty good. Notes: Can be a long line to enter so helps to get there early. Drinks are fairly standard price. They need a larger smoking area. There ends up being a queue to go out later in the night. This might be a summer phenomena though as it's nice to just step out for some air when the weather is good. Not sure if it faces the same overcrowding in winter. read more

The double standards at this club are insane. As to not put my personal bias on the situation, I have explained our experience in facts. - He (a member of our group) wasn't allowed in for wearing a short-sleeved shirt when other people were - When a girl in our group wore the exact same shirt, she was allowed in - When he wore the girls top which had already been deemed acceptable by the promoter on her, this was also unacceptable to them - When in the queue wearing a woman's top a different member of staff came up and said there is no way your friend is getting in looking like that. - At no point did they insinuate that he had too much to drink - The dress code states the only things which aren't allowed are suits and tracksuits, yet people were also let in wearing tracksuits We were given several excuses when the staff were trying to justify their behaviour of why some people were allowed in wearing shirts and our friend was not. The main reason reiterated was that it was a hip hop night. I would have thought with hip hop being a diverse and modern movement this backwards mindset would not be expected. read more

This is a solid spot for good music. Its on the edge of the Shoreditch area and has some grit to it. The night that I want was Born Electric showcase with James Zabiela, Kidnap Kid, & Kry Wolf and the crowd was in for a good time. Upstairs was more of a mainstream scene, whereas the main room seemed to play host to more of a music focused crowd. Beers were five quid, so pretty standard prices. More then enough kinds of other good stuff from various peddlers to go round. For sure a prime place, and less mainstream as say Fabric. When in London, I'll be back. read more

Went three times, and all three times very disappointing music. Keep an eye out for your belongings. They don't just pick pockets. I bought my last drink at 12:30 AM, didn't realize when my debit card was swapped out with another of the exact same design but different name. When I realized it wasn't my card the next morning, I found out from my bank they emptied my account (they even got my pin!) within an hour after I ordered my last drink! I lost my phone the same day as well. I suddenly found my bag open and my phone gone, even though I felt very sober and was keeping an eye on my bag as well. Find my iPhone told me my phone was still at the club, but the club did nothing to reach out to me even after I filled out a lost item report. They never pick up the phone when I called either. When I talked to a friend about what happened, I found out he had lost his high-end watch at the same club as well. There's definitely something sketchy going on there that involved sophisticated planning and colluding staff. BE CAREFUL! I'm never going back! read more

It's hard to find a great nice dance club these days with so many big over priced event locations out there. But I had the chance to go and see The Black Madonna again at this awesome spot. It's not pretentious or over bearing with to much decor that makes you feel like you can't lean against the wall. This place is down to earth with some great staff. Two floors of great music. It's not real big but it's a fun place with a great crowd vibe. There is nothing bad I can say about it. What was nice is the warm welcome I felt being much older than most of the crowd with no one giving me a second thought. It's a great place for a good time. read more

TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ANYWHERE ELSE! I don't even know where to begin with this place. My friends and I went to XOYO for their uni student night and bought tickets beforehand so we wouldn't have to deal with any issues when we got there. To our surprise we encountered a collection of bouncers with the audacity to specifically target the women of color in our group and go through their entire wallets, flipping through bills and looking at cards. A complete invasion of privacy. Then, they gave two members of our group a hard time because they were so stupid they couldn't figure out that the date on an American ID is month/day/year not day/month/year. They told these girls that their IDs were expired. These men also accosted two of my friends about their level of drunkenness, saying they were too drunk to go in. One was eventually allowed in but the other they completely refused. They were both perfectly fine. But the icing on the cake was truly the fact that each one of these power-tripping actions were taken ONLY against the women of color in our group. As a white female, the bouncers barely looked at my ID before stamping my hand and letting me in. This is unacceptable. We spoke to the manager about the terrible treatment and just he said what he had to say to appease us, but clearly didn't care at all. Not to mention that the scene inside was terrible as well. Bad music, weird people...not even enough people to be considered a crowd. There's a lot of mixed reviews on here but let me break it down. The hype about XOYO is undeserved. There are so many better places to go in London. Take your business literally anywhere else. read more

Just got back from a gig here! It's a bit weird to go to a venue that's SMACKBANG in the middle of city offices. Getting food at 7pm before a gig is pretty problematic since most places are shut at 7pm. XOYO itself is quite a cute little venue, we were led down to the basement and it's quite small so it's far more intimate (or maybe I saw the FRIENDLIEST BAND in the world, I'm biased) Surprisingly, I wasn't as squished as I'd imagined I would be. There was enough room to dance a little and see the band. I REALLY enjoyed it. I actually hope more bands play here since it's such a nice venue. (Maybe I'll try a club night soon!) The front of the building is a cafe/bar during the day which looks like they're trying to get revenues from everywhere. read more

I was pretty impressed by XOYO following the gig I attended last night. It is located in a super convenient location (for me) down a side street close to Old Street station. Once inside you can either head straight downstairs to the venue proper or hang out in the upstairs bar. Although the latter looked like a good option, the support had already started to play so we rushed straight down to join the throng. Being subterranean, there was a real risk that the downstairs room could become some kind of claustrophobic sweat pit or dungeon. However, it was actually rather pleasant (as music venues go) with ample bar space and good acoustics in the middle of the room. However, the sound quality did seem to suffer on the edges so it is worth positioning yourself with care. The lighting rig is best described as basic. However, you don't come to see a band because of the lighting show do you? The capacity is around 800 so this is a great place to see bands that are on the up in a relatively intimate setting before they become mega famous. This accords with the booking policy which always seems fresh and eclectic. read more

I had a great time here during the Urban Nerd Halloween party. The music was great and there are two floors for you to access. The atmosphere and layout of the place allows for easy movement, where people can crowd in the middle or chill in the back. Both areas have little sitting places, whether it be couches or mini-stages that you can sit on to rest your weary feet. There is one long bar on the upper level, and the bartenders were very smiley, friendly and helpful even when I didn't know what I wanted. Admittedly, when the "happy hours" or "cheap hours" were over, drink prices shot up. The music was great. The people that went was a mixed variety, but it was the first time I didn't get grabbed by random men. It may have been because it was a). Halloween and b). people came to hear specific DJs/artists. The only people that grabbed me were people who wanted to photograph my costume. There's a good range of students to mid-20's that night. It may be also due to the Urban Nerd party though, I'm not sure what other events are held here. The tickets at the door were a bit pricey (13 pounds) but the cloak room was cheap. It may have been because of the event though because I saw posters advertising for 6-10 pound tickets very early on. The basement didn't open until a bit later (11PM) but when we talked to the security guard, he was very nice about it, completely smiling and sociable. All the workers there were nice. Even when my roommate accidentally handed my jacket back and the cloakroom staff told me to wait until the club closed, I talked to the bouncer who went in with a stern word and then told me to talk to the manager next time. What a lovely staff! After all there are club rules, so I can't fault the cloakroom staff too hard, but my roommate did come back immediately five seconds later! My only thing would be if you're a smoker, the smoking area is tiny. It's possible the only place that has a line. I walked out for a bit and it's literally like a skinny long closet with high walls that might as well trap the exhaling smoke anyway. read more

If you're looking to come here then you're best pre-booking a ticket as it gets packed and tickets get sold out. I came to XOYO with some friends and had such a great time here. The venue is big, has cloak room facilities but the girl in the cloakroom wouldn't put 2 jackets on one hanger... Mugged off. People here are friendly (probably because they're on drugs) and we were the first to be dancing up on the front platform. The drinks are very reasonable too. Music was spot on, kept us dancing for the whole night. This might become one of our regular stomping grounds and I'm looking forward to the next time I go there. read more

I went to XOYO for Stand up for Japan, a charity gig featuring a stellar line-up of DJs including 2manydjs, Erol Alkan, Caribou and The Horrors. That night was indeed fantastic. It's a pity the club wasn't quite up to the occasion though. It's really small, and while small can also mean intimate which can be surprisingly fantastic (such as in the case of the much-missed Luminare), it's not quite the case here. The sound system isn't top-notch either. As for drinks... well, I got there around 6.45 pm and, by 8 pm, requested a round of Jager bombs (as you do), only to be told that the bar had run out of Jagermeister. Fair enough, they had other shots - sambuca, tequila, whatever - but the special that night was supposed to be Jager bombs, and, to run out at such an early stage only speaks of poor planning. XOYO's got a great location and there're tonnes of great acts who perform there. The club, however, needs to up its ante to match the quality of the events. read more

So I went here for a gig by Maps & Atlases. It was a great show and I had an amazing night (band gets 5 stars) but this review is me trying to separate the night from the nightclub. The place has a cool look and I was excited when I got there. Badly managed queues meant we got kept waiting outside for 20 minutes and so missed the first act. When I first got in I was impressed by the intimacy but then so many people were crammed in that it didn't make too much difference. Although you'll probably only be a couple of metres from the stage, you still might not have a great view because the stage isn't raised enough. Plus when I was there it was full of frustratingly tall Shoreditch types. I know I shouldn't entirely blame the venue for this, but there was also quite a lot of talking during the show. No real beer selection, but I appreciated the bottle bar which made for speedier service than the main one. This feels like a pointless review to write because you're probably going to go for a band rather than the venue (I know I did). In summary, if you have a choice of venues, I'd definitely look at other places, but the venue itself isn't going to put me off going again (especially if Maps & Atlases come back). read more

I've only been to XOYO as a gig venue - but I have to say it's a great little spot. The downstairs room is fairly small so it makes for a good atmosphere. You can get right up close to your new favourite band. Sagres on tap downstairs too - which is a bonus! I'd be interested to get to one of their club nights. read more

XOYO is probably the only venue in Shoreditch that is still making an effort not to become just another generic club full of generic people. They put on great club nights and gigs almost every night of the week and tickets are always reasonably priced depending on the lineup. Its a massive venue with an upstairs area (also used for art exhibitions sometimes) and a massive basement where the main nights are hosted. There is a great soundsystem, the only thing I would probably complain about are the drinks which are priced from about £4.50 upwards. Music shuts off at 3am so there's always plenty of time to dance your heart out before home time read more

The first time I went to XOYO was during the first week of opening and as a consequence things didn't run very smoothly. Fair enough, it takes a while for a new venue to settle into itself but I've been back a couple of times since and I don't think the venue has yet reached it's full potential. The space is great, the location is perfect (especially for me as I work on Old Street roundabout) and the acts that they get are inspirational. However I don't think the acoustics are up to much downstairs and the smoking area leaves a lot to be desired. Another thing that is disappointing is the lack of atmosphere before and sometimes during the sets. Waiting for Mount Kimbie to come on was like hanging around in a train station and at the end of night they have a horrible habit of making you feel like your mum's about to pick you up from the school disco and it's time to go to bed. Hopefully these things will get sorted out and XOYO will reach it's potential as a fantastic venue. But right now I don't think they are doing the big names they pull in or themselves justice as the music gets lost. After all - that's what we're there for. read more

I went to XOYO last Wednesday. here is the e-mail I sent them about my experience. I recommend you avoid this place like the plague. Hello I attended the Sunshine Underground gig at your venue on Wednesday. The whole experience of visiting your venue was very disappointing and the least customer friendly experience I have had in a long time. My two friends also found it disappointing, from your over officious and frankly rude staff to the enforcement of rules that appear to serve no purpose and that your staff refuse to explain. When my friends and I arrived there was no queue so we headed toward the door to be told that we had to cross the road and stand next to a wall on the pavement opposite where one of your staff was stationed, who then said "Right, you can go in now!" 1) What was that about? 2) Why were we made to cross the road and queue up like naughty children when it was unnecessary? About 5 mins after being in the venue I realised I had left my glasses in a pub. The pub was about 60 seconds from your venue, in fact, you could almost see it, yet when I asked to be allowed to go and retrieve my glasses was told that if I left the venue I wouldn't be allowed back in. When I asked why I was told that "They're the rules". I again asked why, and also questioned what the point of stamping my hand on the way in was if I am not to be allowed to retrieve my glasses, to be told by your staff that he didn't need to explain any rule & I would not be allowed in if I went to get my glasses. 3) Why do you stamp people's hands if you do not allow people to leave? 4) Why do you not allow people to leave and then re-enter when they give a perfectly valid reason? Let's not bother discussing £4 for a small can of crap lager. Let's just say that you know it's a rip off, I know it's a rip off, Stevie Wonder knows it's a rip off, and move on. Finally, the sound in your venue is atrocious. I commented to my friends during the support band and then the music being played before TSU came on that I was concerned at the sound quality and for me, it totally ruined TSU's performance. I have seen them on a number of occasions and know their songs well, but the sound was so bad in your venue that there were songs that were frankly almost unrecognisable. All in all, the experience of going to your club can only leave one to think that it is purely a money making exercise with no thought whatsoever about the customer or customer service. I shall certainly never return. In fact, The Beatles could reform, including a miraculous recovery of the two dead ones, and I could have guest passes for me and all of my friends and I wouldn't enter your venue. Please can you answer the questions raised in this e-mail, and also provide me with a list of any other venues that XOYO and any of it's owners or managers hold a stake in so that I can avoid them too? The lady who was doing security checks kept my grinder. Granted, I should not have had a grinder in my bag in the first place but I did not know the night was going to lead me to XOYO. This place is amazing. You feel like you are in a trance when you walk in, although this was my first time and I had gone in pre-drunk. The coatroom is truly purgatory in a positive way. I can't think of any other way to describe it. The coatroom is more chaotic than the cluh itself. I really appreciate the darkness and the smoke machines of the actual club because that means I can't see anyone and vice versa. I did not buy any of my drinks that night so I cannot comment on price range. They do have Hennessy though. read more

this electronic/indie music venue and club is one of the city's newest, and i'm glad i've been able to check it out because its atmosphere is perfect for eclectic, bass-heavy electronic sounds. i came here on a friday and was impressed with a few things: - the music sounded great due to the extremely loud, deep-bassy speakers. i was almost deaf with ringing ears afterword, which to me is a good sign when i've seen a live electronic show. - the space is basementy and feels like an underground warehouse with high ceilings and dark walls. it's very urban and will be perfect for more intimate electronic acts. - the night i came here, people danced (as in, they really danced, instead of just cruising or standing complacently) and the music was quality - a variety of deep minimalist/ Chicago-sounding acid house and UK funky. one of the DJs was a tiny woman who mixed her own sounds in awesome ways and made me proud to be an electronic-music loving female! The only cons were that the fire alarm went off several times as we came in, and the show could be cheaper (and could have involved a student discount, which would have been nice). Overall, would definitely come back here for future shows. read more

Came here for a gig - a fairly solid venue for live music. The queues outside are pretty slow moving, so make sure you arrive in plenty of time if there is an act you don't want to miss. Drink prices are expensive (but standard for gigs and the area, so not much you can do about that!) and it is a small basement venue, so if filled to capacity it can get pretty rammed. I could see the stage from where I was standing, but I was squished into the side like a little sardine - if you were standing at the back of the venue and are of average height, I think you may have struggled to see the stage as it wasn't raised. Sound quality was really good, the lighting was slightly erratic, but will definitely return for future gigs that are on here! read more

I've never walked past XOYO during the day, but I'd imagine the venue would look remarkably out of place amongst the multi-storey offices of Cowper Street. Located in the financial part of Old Street, the area does not emanate the same night-out charge as Brick Lane or Curtain road. The venue however appears unaffected by this, and evidently isn't reliant on the flow of hipsters looking for the nearest club. Walking to the club things seem almost tranquil, but inside could not be more of a contrast. The atmosphere is pulsing, and you immediately get the impression that everyone is really going for it. This is probably thanks to a number of factors. Firstly, XOYO showcases some of the best DJ-ing talent on the scene, the sound is loud and the quality system means you really feel the base. Secondly, the entry is a lot pricier than some of the other clubs in the area that are going for a similar vibe, ranging from around £8-£15 depending on who's playing. If anything, this seems to work as an advantage. The average clientele are not suited and booted with money to burn, and if they've parted with that kind of entry fee they're going to make sure they have a bloody good night of it. The dance floor is always hot, busy and sweaty, but that's exactly what you want from this kind of night. There's a kind of surging energy that hits as soon as you go down to the basement where hordes of intoxicated clubbers are lapping up the beats. Downsides? If you're a smoker, which, it being Shoreditch, everyone is, you're in for some queuing. In fact the queue for the smoking area is reliably longer than that for the door. Once up there you'll find a narrow patio, fenced-in and extremely crowded. Be vigilante against cigarettes not in lips to avoid collateral burns, and if you're a non-smoker not up for passive inhaling, give the area a miss altogether. If you know your DJs keep this club on the radar, with strong line-ups appearing around two nights a week. If on the other hand you're entirely ignorant to the disc-jockey scene, you should still give XOYO a visit, as the setlists have something for everyone. The people are fun, the weekends are busy and the atmosphere is always electric. You may leave strapped for cash and sweaty, but it's worth it. read more

In my opinion if your into your music then this London venue is one to avoid. The layout of the club isn't great (although they have tried to improve this) but the biggest let down of all is the fact that the soundsystems in both rooms are completely shocking. If your a snob who likes a good soundsystem like myself then don't go here. We went for a deviation night with Theo Parrish which on paper should have been the nuts, but the main room lacked all mid range and then the speakers gave up and distorted with all mids and highs completely, which for a venue of this caliber is shocking. The second room upstairs is no better and didn't help by the fact that the DJs couldn't mix!! If I were you I'd save your cash and head to a proper venue like Corsica studios or dare I say it Fabric who know how to run a system loud with it sounding nice. XOYO all I'm going to say is maybe you should have a look at a Funktion 1 system, there's a reason a lot of clubs use it! read more

Started off as a decent night, had the usual bag check going in which is all good but later on in the night myself and another female friend of mine went into the bathroom stall together and after a few minutes the security were banging on the door telling us to come out and forced us ouside the venue where they searched our bags again and gave us a pat down. When they realized we had nothing on us and that we genguinly were just using the bathroom I asked them if they could apologize as this was quite embarrasing for both of us and they said no. I was very dissapointed with this and we went back inside to retrive our coats and left the venue. As we had both come all the way from Ireland and were looking forward to a fun night out and having been told that XOYO was a cool place to go, we were very upset to have our night ruined just because the security thought we were doing drugs and embarassed us infront of all the other people queueing up to get in. :( read more

Decent club, definitely has the European vibe. More trance than house and what not. Very dark and foggy, humid from ....sweat/body heat? ....Bathrooms were well lit and clean. Two rooms, like other reviewers have said the first floor is less crowded and therefore more chill, less dance. Then the second floor which is packed reasonably tight with dancing- enough room to move but not so much that you feel like everyone is watching you. Smoking is up another flight of stairs, didn't go since I don't smoke. We didn't get prepaid tickets (4 of us). I didn't actually notice the flashlight guys until we were on our way out... but they do exist! Good location. Weak drinks. read more

I was Xoyo at Shoreditch Butchery for the first time last night for a gig and although I wouldn't rate it as highly as many of the other smaller gig venues in London, it did have a good vibe, quirky industrial decor and friendly bar staff! We had drinks in the bar before going downstairs to the club and overall it's what you'd expect from a club just off Old Street, but the main difference is the atmosphere was relaxed, unpretentious and the door men even smiled! The decor and furnishing is a retro, mis-match of old arm chairs and speak easy bar stools which all create a stylish, urban space. The gig venue doesn't really work simply because as you come down the stairs, people tend to stop and congregate (to the right of the stage as you enter the room) and this causes a bottle neck to spreading out across the venue to get a good spot to see the stage. Having said that, the sound was pretty good, beer at regular London prices and great location for public transport options at the end of the night to get home.
