Long have I pontificated about the mighty Solid Rock Cafe in Glasgow, the undisputed king of the rock pub north of the border. It's pushed hard for it's title by The Black Rose and Black Bull, both in Edinburgh. The Crobar, however, is my undisputed king of the south. I absolutely, positively, unequivocally LOVED this bar. The jukebox is awesome - custom built compilations of songs by group or genre. I heard everything from UFO to Nine Inch Nails while I was there. The drinks are pretty cheap for a central London bar... as in I didn't do a double take when I was charged. The decor is astounding! 2000AD pages adorn the walls, mixed in with other comic pages from the 80s and 90s... it's amazing. The bar doesn't have any draft beers, but does have an amazing range of bottles and spirits. The punters were all readily accepting of someone that clearly wasn't a regular, and there was a fair bit of banter and laughter between everyone, whether they knew you or not. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, even being quite clear that the beers they'd just put in the fridge weren't cold so they were selling them under protest! I was there a lot of the night, and can't say enough positive, happy, good things about them, or the place as whole. Even entertainment was provided by a small dog that was quite the thief, swiping half a vodka and coke while it's owner was distracted. Not sure that happens every night though... Seriously though... if you like your music a little loud, your decor a little wild, and you time to be filled in a pleasant environment, then for me, this is THE place to visit. This go 'round, I ended up having a crew to drink with every night and learned just how early the sun comes up during the summer in London. Sunday's hangover was as badass as this bar. Yelper, it's been practically four years. Since I discovered the Crobar, here, In London and I must say it's my all time *favourite* bar. Honourary, legendary, a kick ass, fast, rock superstar. Now this admitted in all honesty, Geek or tomboy chic is a more fitting style for me. Friend brought me here thinkin' I'd be scared. Lanky black chick, too cool for school to descend into this metal lair. Friend was wrong and shoulda' known better, after one trip I was sold. Ask me, would I rather visit another bar? Hell to the no. You can find me here, throwing back bourbon on a Saturday night. Or rocking a Crobar rucksack, cause their merch is pretty tight. And just between me and you? I secretly hated to write this review. Cause I want to keep Crobar all to my damn self. Leave me with Rock, Beer n' Bulleit, you can keep the top shelf. Oh Cro, you slay me worse than Slayer. And I love you even more, cause you'd never dream of playing John Mayer. Iron Maiden, Sons of Icarus, live acts, the scene is straight mean, Complete with a crew too fly to try hard to be seen. And incidentally, I've never felt out of place. A very tolerant bunch, just respect boundaries and don't act like a waste of space. Kick back, enjoy Ozzy, stay out of the doorman's face. Have a laugh, have a chat, hold your liquor and your night'll just be ace. And as far as the staff at the Cro? They make every other seem inadequate and slow. Don't expect a lot of fawning. Swift, no frills, still civil, it's all very nice. And you never have to ask for ice, or repeat an order twice. I'd bring my mum here. And that's no joke. From my lips to your ears or eyes, truer words have never been spoke. A regular, imagine my surprise and pleased (inward) 'awww'! A personal touch, my favourite Crobar-ette once gave me a pink straw. So Yelper, you can find me at 17 Manette, throwing back whiskey. Though mental note to diversify as it leaves one feeling rather frisky. I've killed a few brain cells here in my day. But to be honest, I would not have it any other way. Yelper, I'm telling you no other bar can compete! So minus a visit to Crobar, your life will not be complete. First of all, happy hour from 4pm to 9pm every day. That means £2 Heineken bottles and £2.50 Bulleit + mixer. There are a few other things on the happy hour menu (posted on the wall behind the bar) and legend has it there are £3 hot dogs too (though they were out of buns when we ordered ours so no hot dogs for us). The bar also offers clothing and other merch. We happened along during their £5 t-shirt sale otherwise they average about £12 each. The bar is narrow but goes back aways and we didn't have any trouble finding a bench and table when we were there post-work on a Wednesday night. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The bartender was totally willing to look up how to make a whiskey sour for me but I just switched to a Heineken. But, seriously nice guy to offer. The jukebox was also pumping! £1 = 3 plays, £2 = 7. Their signboard out in front says "Beer'n'Whisky Rock'n'Roll". While I'm a huge fan of the former half I have to say that I'm only a moderate fan of the latter. When I was visiting London I pegged this as one of the top places I wanted to visit because I had seen Zane Lamprey visit here in his show, Three Sheets. This place reminded me very much of some of my favorite San Francisco bars. Quite rock n' roll, but with a lot of quality drinks available. Also how can you beat a happy hour with 2.50 Bulleit and any mixer? Bulleit is AWESOME. Aside from their drinks, the staff were quite friendly. My girlfriend left her wallet on the bar as she brought shots to the table and about an hour later we came back in after tracing our steps back and they had the wallet, just as it was when it was left. The Cro is the epi-centre of the Rock and Metal world in London, if not the UK, if not Europe. Yes, it can get packed; yes it can be a fight for the bar, and yes the bogs are crap. BUT with staff that cool, a jukebox that awesome and the genuine chance that you'll see a guitar hero of yours in there, the Cro is a must for any self respecting Rocker or Metaller. Impressive range of Bourbons, plenty of fit rock chicks and no shortage of awesome tatts & piercings. Smoke outside on the street where some of the best chats take place. I didn't know this place existed two years ago, and now it's a regular haunt. I'm more rockabilly than rocker, but I love coming here for the great company and the cool music. It's like a metal version of Cheers - there's always someone there that you know, certainly if you go often enough! ;o) There are a lot of regulars here, which says it all. Crobar has long been a regular stop-off for me, as it is situated conveniently near my commute bus stop. The best time to visit is between 4 and 9 on a weekday, as they have some surprisingly big drink discounts for the middle of Soho. The place is tiny and corridor-like, which means it fills up very quickly and can be hard to find a seat. It's inhabited mostly by metalheads and a few locals, and is in my opinion one of the best metal bars in London. Their whisky and spirits collection is very impressive. The old-school jukebox has an extensive library of rock and metal tracks and the staff, sometimes a bit stand-offish, have a rock n'roll attitude. The bar can be a brilliant night out, as long as you get there early and don't p*** off the staff. read more

The Crowbar makes me want to go out and smash things. The background music is like, "AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and like "DEATH!!!!!!!!!!! DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and it rocks. This is a tiny heavy metal pub in an alley off Charing Cross Road that doesn't have a lot of seating room but sure as hell has a lot of punch power. Although most of the people there were death loving metal heads, they weren't at all abrasive. In fact most of them were fuzzy little teddy bears inside with pierced and tattooed exteriors. Happy hour is from 4 to 9PM everyday. And although "Rape Me" might not be the happiest tune to be listening to while you're downing your £2 Heineken, the cheap liquor and the overall good vibes will leave you not too homicidal once it's time to make an escape. read more

For all those who like a little bit of the alternative side of things, this place really hits a home run, smashes a six, goes the distance! The best way to describe it is like a festival in a box with host of metallers and rockers just hanging out and getting trashed! The music is juke box based metal and alternative, the walls are covered with judge dredd comics, it's dingy, often quite cramped, and visited by pretty much all of the metal/rock elite! If a good night of hard rock is what you want with a few jager bombers, you really can't go wrong with this place! p.s. It's 3am, it's a Thursday night (or is it early Friday morning? Who cares) you're on a night out that you should have left 3 hours ago. But, you know the next day at work will be tough, so why stop now! Where do you go at that time? Cro Bar is the answer! Always open late, gotta love that fact. Very small but a cool space, definitely. Would I go here at any other time than 3am? Probably not. Now I don't have anything against the place, it's obviously a hit with the metal & rock pub scene. Packed, packed and packed! It's obviously a must for any hard rocker traveling to London. Everyone who likes metal, punk or hard rock has been here and if you don't stop by you'll just have to make up some lame excuse for not at least taking a peek. There is hardly any room, but since you can drink in the streets, does it really matter? There is only one toilet for the girls (not sure what it is for the men), which was a bit of an issue for me and another gal that were waiting for the couple to "finish" in the stall. The bartenders are quick, and get a lot done fast, making for a good drink experience. If they weren't as efficient as they are this place would have issues. Perfect music selection on the 'box so be ready for sing-a-longs and possible rotten stares if you don't know the tunes. read more

There is not another place like this anywhere in London. Its a rock and metal bar - the staff are efficient in difficult circumstances - its a very small bar in a very very packed narrow pub. There is more space down the back where most people hang out - it seemed to me that the regulars are up the front where it is most crowded. there are a strange mix of people in there, but I have never seen any trouble. There are not that many places in the centre of town that play rock and metal. So squeeze on through the narrow doorway and sharpen your elbows to find a place at the bar! I don't know what it is about having rock and metal on the musical menu, but it does seem to attract a much different (slightly less touristy?) crowd to other places in the rest of the West End. The bar staff here are all friendly and efficient enough, but if I do have one criticism, all of the people that have served me in the past have seemed fairly anonymous. Drinks prices are average for the West End, but by the very nature of this place being so overly-packed and only a small bar over which to serve the drinks, it is unlikely that you will spend a fortune here. Just as a point of note - at certain times, they will charge you a relatively small cover charge to enter. As you may expect for a rock and metal bar -the toilets are quite often a mess of different excretions... The staff are generally fairly swift to remedy this, however, it is never pleasant to encounter it in the first place! Despite its shortcomings, I do love The Crobar - long may it reign! read more

A very tiny place. A bar that looks like a temporary bar at a school dance (no draughts?) directly when you enter. In the back a slightly larger room bit still supertiny. What can I say about Cro Bar, except that it is one of the best bars to go to in London. I don't think there is another one like it. To describe it think CBGBs in New York. It is a small venue but packs a big punch. Very popular with all the Heavy Rock crowd and the jukebox gets booked up hours in advance on a weekend night. The bar staff there are great and they always join you in the tradition of one shot for me one for you. The drinks of choice there are Red Stripe and bourbon and theres plenty of it. Definitely worth checking out but make sure you can name at least 4 Judas Priest songs and don your best leather jacket before heading off! Rock ON!!! read more

The Cro Bar has a reputation for being the pit-stop for all fans of rock. The bar is quite small, in fact, the whole place is pretty small - space is tight and seats are limited. However, people frequent this place for it's reputation and rocking jukebox. I've been here a few times, always on a weekend. After a certain time, they charge a few quid to get in but that's not bad if you just want a drink and don't fancy paying to get into a club. I must say though, I'm not the biggest fan. The place is always too busy, I'm lazy these days and prefer to get a seat. It can also get pretty noisy and it's not ideal for a quiet night out. However, if you're already half-cut and looking for a place to get rowdy and drunken with mates then the Cro Bar provides the perfect atmosphere. read more

Metal filled, noisy, bustley, dive bar. If you wanted a quiet night, why were you in the soho anyway? This place is dinky, and it does get super busy, you are going to bump into people, and not just each other, i've ended up bantering with plenty of band members too, who needs maddox club when you can have George Dickel, and a wicked rock filled custom jukebox? Right? The bar is dinky, the seating is limited, and you will end up sharing a table with interesting folks, like the man who was totally the lovechild of peter sellers and iggy pop, swayingly bladdered who walked in with swagger, threw his leather jacket down on the recently vacated seat next to me like the rebel in a fifties film (quite possibly his era, to be fair) and confidently slurring "I'm getting you ladies a whisky", to the whole table, and his bar bill must have been extensive, and he definitely had sharp enough elbows anyway to squeeze on to the packed bar. Thankfully, he didn't do a full iggy and hump any amp stacks in transparent trousers, but, I really wouldn't put that past happening here. If it's late, you may have to pay a small entry fee, and the toilets are gross, and down a rather steep intoxication test of stairs. Just don;t wear your nicest shoes, be ready to share your personal space, and you'll love it, the happy hour is great, the staff are even better (they definitely take no crap though), and the tunes are fab. read more

Ahoy!! The Crobar is cramped, dingy and just plain wonderful. They must be doing something right as I frequently end up back there. I usually turn up on week-nights and it's usually busy at those times, at the weekend though it is absolutely packed which may put some people off as there just isn't the room to move. After about 10pm they do charge a £2 entry fee but in comparison to many late night drinking establishments that's relatively cheap. The music is selected by you, the customer, on their juke-box and as mentioned in a previous review of this bar, there will be some sing-a-longs. That, however, really adds to the atmosphere and providing you don't mind a bit of hard rock and metal, you should quite enjoy a night in the Crobar. One slight problem is that the bar space is quite limited and can be awkward to find a way through but once you are there the bar staff are quite quick in their service. This, however, is only a small problem and doesn't really have an adverse effect on the evening overall. There are no beer taps in the Crobar with all the beer being in bottles. To add to this, they have quite an impressive range of whiskeys and other spirits, considering just how small the place is (and it is small). "Show me your tatts and you can come in." Well maybe it isn't quite like that, but I have always felt pretty privileged to make it past the doorman into Crowbar. It is a rock guru's paradise. Rock, Metal and Thrash (Yep I really know what I'm talking about here) oozes from the walls. It is a rock Mecca in the heart of London. My group forced me to drink dirty pooh water, yes Newcastle Brown Ale. It isn't good, but the rough edged rawness of Crowbar created a need for a dirty drink. Shots circulate like a bush fire in Summer. You do not have to look like a rockstar to get into Crowbar, but it will definitely increase your chances of getting through the door. Outsiders may get stared at, but keep yourself to yourself, find a quiet table to sit at in the back, try and enjoy the occasional random jamming on his guitar, drink sensibly (yeah right) and you'll make it out in one piece. read more

What a great place. The jukebox is loaded with metal, mostly older but some current selections. The beer was cheap, a 20 ounce Newcastle for 4.60 and they had lots of bourbons and whiskeys to choose from. The patrons of the bar ranged from old metalheads in the front, a girl with a huge pink mohawk, younger crowds in the back at the tables and dudes in suits. Put your rock hands in the air and head bang your way through your pint, this place is a proper rock bar. That's Rock bar with a capital R. Maybe ROCK with all capitals. That's how rocking it is. Its open til 3am on a Monday night, which was just what I needed after spending the earlier part of the evening in Tiger Tiger. Metallica and Iron Maiden got me through the pains of my weird tantrums and chav induced stupor. I didn't love the fact that there is a £2 charge at the door, but that was forgiven as the nice barman suggested house whisky instead of the JD I asked for, so I wasn't really out of pocket...in a round about kind of way. Its dive-y and dirty and there is nothing fancy about it, but that's not what you need or expect from a rock bar, so that's no big deal. The staff are friendly, the customers are happy and the drinks are plentiful and cheapish. Toilets are kind of well used looking (that's my nice way of saying a bit skanking) by the end of the evening, but its not like you need to spend much time in them anyway, so its no big deal breaker for this great bar. read more

What an excellent find in London. I stopped by on recommendation of a friend when I asked if he could recommend a place to get a late drink. It is definitely a metal bar, so if you're someone annoyed by metal, hardcore, or punk, don't even bother. I think it's fair to say that on first glance, one would not assume I am into that kind of music, so I found it wonderful that people approached me and struck up conversation. I met a lot of excellent individuals that night and shared some cheap drinks. The best was an Icelandic beer called Einstök which cannot be found back home. The jukebox has an excellent choice, but be prepared to wait a while for your songs. I met four bartenders the two nights I went, and all were friendly.
