Like the rebellious outcast of the trendy family, the Macbeth sits on one of Shoreditch's backstreets making a silent stand against overpriced drinks and badly dressed door whores. There is a nice smoking terrace and in the evenings there is a free BBQ if you get there early. The sound system is absolutely incredible and the line up is always festival-worthy (last time I went I saw Fake Blood, Annie Mac, Diplo and Mowgli for only £5!) I think this warrants a 4*- after a particularly ridiculously anti- supercalifragilisticexpialidociou band, I kinda stormed out. Let just say, there is a reason why "modern" (as in modern art) music never made it into the mainstay and there is also a reason why you don't mix it with electronica. The result is that I am pleasantly surprised that I didn't start bleeding from my ears. The funny stone wall decor (DON'T pull the nails out!), pool table (yes, Lizzie there is just the one I believe...), smoking terrace, rentable 3rd floor and reasonably cheap bar with friendlyish service all ticked the right boxes. Ah the dirty drunkenness that has happened within these very walls I can not sum up in words, it would require an interpretive dance which would put mere mortals to shame. This dingy dark music venue has comfy sofas, shoreditch twats and overflowing toilets - oh how I love this place. I realize I have not written a review in months but i'm in London. So sue me. Anyway, I grabbed three of my flat mates, put on my gold chain and went to Beef, a monthly hip hop night at the Macbeth in Shoreditch. Beef is like 7th grade dance heaven. The DJ goes back and forth between each set of beef: Jay Z versus Nas, Biggie against Tupac and even Ja Rule going head to head with 50 Cent and so on and so on (I even heard Gangstarr's Dwyck, which just made my night. Ooh la la ow we wee, you say Muhammad Ali, I say Cassius Clay. You say butta I say Parkay. Perfect.) With every jam turning into a new one I found myself saying "Ah, now THIS is my favorite song!!!" This is where the prodigiously talented Amy Winehouse's scabby husband committed the crime that landed him in the old bucket and pail. That's jail to you and me. Right, glad we got that out of the way. The Macbeth is, as previous reviewers have remarked, truly a musician's pub. A gloriously insular feeling and unpretentious little pub whose main focus is music, good music, and good up and coming musicians. I have a soft spot for this place since seeing a good friend play a gig here a couple of years ago. A good place to go for a few bottles of wine with friends and to catch a band. Oh, and I hear the almost Dickensianly grotesque Fielder-Civil has gone back to jail so there's no danger you'll encounter him here. read more

So nice to know there is still a bar in Hoxton that has that Hoxton charm about it and not host a gaggle of "Sloany ponys". The type of night you have at the Macbeth really come down to the promoter and event that is on. I come here every now and then, The Macbeth is a well advised last resort to a night out! I went with some mates to find out that Tape-Deck was Djing and it was a mad night! Tonnes of up and coming music in the area will begin or at least come through these doors to play and drink (or both) because the drink are dirt cheap here some nights are mellow some are madness but you will always find mad people in there regardless!! Its about £2-£5 pound entry depending on promotion and night, and is owned by musicians and artists so you really get the feel of audio anarchy in there on a mad night! As long as you aren't hurting anybody or disrupting some one else's night or being sick in the corner, the bouncer's will more or less let you get on with it and they are cool enough to converse with! Maybe its just a one off hype and I'm being too accepting of a pretty dark and dismal place, but you shouldn't care or compare your Macbeth experience with other bar/club like pubs, this is the most you'll get out of a fiver on a good night in Shoreditch I feel! read more

Everytime I come here, everytime, the music is perfect. Friends have hosted two birthdays at various cover band nights here (Limp Bizkit and Rhianna). Both nights had our group in a sweaty mess on the dancefloor. If you get there early and you need to get there early if you want to get a seat, you can play pool. I love me a good game of pool. The Macbeth is a strange venue. Located in an unlikely part of Shoreditch, it often feels as though you are heading the wrong way. Once there, the pub itself is decorated in a dark way and there is very limited seating downstairs. The upstairs feels as if you are walking through somebody's house corridor and the roof terrace could be better arranged. But I guess that the whole feel of the place is that they are too cool to care about such menial things anyway. This venue is usually filled with the usual trendy cream of the crop. It hosts bands on a regular basis and has a good sound and space for them. Unfortunately for me, when I was there I had to greeted by Peaches Geldof's band, and they were pretty awful. Arrrgghhh. This venue has gained a reputation for putting on some of the "hottest" in the indie circuit - both new bands and breaking bands have played here. It's right in the heart of Shoreditch and all the trendy "kids" come here to watch a band and hang out. I've DJ-ed here before and I quite liked the surroundings and the buzzing atmosphere. The bands attracted a fair crowd and because the venue already has a bit of a rep, there seemed to be some regulars floating about. I must say, if you're not a Shoreditch resident, it's a little bit out of the way to visit just based on a reputation alone. Whilst the clientele wasn't annoying, loud or overly rowdy, I just prefer my venues with a little less pomp, somewhere more down to earth. It's a decent enough little venue for music but as the stage is in the middle of the pub, it's not a place for a quiet chat with mates. I've been to better venues, more central to the city centre. I wouldn't come back and would perhaps only visit again if someone really great was playing. read more

I really like this place. Yeah it's definitely got the feel of a musicians pub. I can't remember getting up to dance to a standard pub DJ so quickly in a while. The pub still bears a classic interior, and though it gets frequented by Hoxtonite hipsters, it's a decent crowd which is clearly still up for the music. Did some guy really take to the stage, strip and start dancing with the DJ? I think he might have done. It's got an upstairs too, but that was much too busy when we were there. A really good place to catch small but trendy bands as they have various monthly or weekly nights, usually showcasing about three different acts. The crowd are young and fun on most nights, cool, but not too cool for school. The bands are also usually part of clubnights so you can stay on and dance to djs of varying quality. Sometimes they totally get their crowd and sometimes they're so far up their Italo-disco loving bums you can end up having a bit of a lame night. There's an upstairs room and smokers' roof terrace too which can be excellent places to retreat and chat if said Italo-disco-dj-posers get to be too much to bear. read more

It's really easy to give hyper trendy places a scathing review, because of the try hard clientele, or the fact it's in Hoxton, but the thing with the Macbeth is that it's actually really great. It's a fantastic spot to see soem killer bands, and the DJ's are pretty decent too. And anywhere that spins Italo Disco is A OK with me. With a great balcony for smokers to fag off, this is one of those places i wish i didn't enjoy quite as much as i do. read more

The Macbeth is not a theatre bar. Not one bit. I've been here a few times to see gigs and I find it pretty great, much more interesting and intimate than at a standard club. It has the feeling of an old inn bar, with a pool table near the door and a long bar along one side (suspiciously always out of draught) with only a narrow area immediately in front of the stage that's open from wall to wall (this also leads to the loo). I find the makeshift feel really refreshing after walking up Hoxton through Shoreditch. read more

This bar is in a great location and has great choice of drinks behind the bar. It is also a wonderful place to see bands live. However, there is a but coming up BUT: If you go on a weekend night, don't look 18 and don't wear skinny jeans or style yourself on a character from 'The Mighty Boosh' you might feel a little out of place. I think of the place as a Shoreditch youthclub, which in many ways it is. Expect to see first year students that have just left home from St Martins, Camberwell and London Met. The roof terrace is nice to go out for a smoke, or to allow your ears to recover if they have been thudded to death by the thumping pumping electro beats. read more

I was meant to go home! I was not meant to come here! I wound up here on Thursday, when I was actually just ten minutes away from my house. This place is in the opposite direction, yet I'd had just enough to drink to throw caution to the wind and come out and play. And play we did, and it was messy. The Macbeth isn't going to get points for the nicest bar in the world. There's a cut on my finger from broken glass which was all over the floor and yes THE CARPET IS STICKY. But sometimes, that's kinda fun. There's an outdoor terrace which was nice, although I walked into the men's twice while trying to find it. That was fun. I can't remember how much the drinks were or what everyone else was like. It was a bit snotty, bit then, it's Hoxton. It's fake shabby chic, but it works. I like it here. I can't remember ANY of the conversations, or even half the people I spoke to, but damn it was a good night. read more

Went the the Macbeth to see a secret gig by the Good Shoes. Was awesome. A very small venue but that didn't deter people from crowd surfing! There is a really friendly atmosphere and surprisingly good sound. I agree that If you didn't know it was there you wold walk straight past as it is very dark. On my visit it was the summer and incredibly hot and sweaty, so the darkness was welcome so my sweaty bettyness could hopefully go unnoticed! read more

Saw DJ Scotch Egg here doing some pretty mental stuff a few months back. At first after entering this pub, which is set back in the more residential side of Hoxton, it seemed a little unlikely to be a great venue. Appearances were deceptive however as is always the case with the best of places. A great stage, which isn't too big, and nice ambient all over lighting help set the stage for the music. There's an odd little roof terrace with a sofa in the sheltered area which you'll be lucky to manage to sit on. There's a one in one out policy on the roof once it gets busy which can be a real pain if you need to nip to the loo or want a drink. Otherwise a good strong venue in which to see a few gigs even if you are a little put off by the usual Hoxton likely suspects. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I usually go out there to see bands play, and they do get lots of great bands to play. The sound is great, the layout of the pub is good, there's a nice roof garden area which is lovely on warm nights. But as a pub I find it pretty intolerable. The service at the bar is frustrating at best, and there is one bartender that I have seen on different nights months apart serve pretty girls who sidle up well after other people who have been waiting patiently. And it really is a hang out for the cool kids, so be prepared to be surrounded by twenty-somethings that have spent all week thinking about their outfits. I have actually watched girls tease their hair in front of the stage while a band was playing. But, if you're looking for a place to listen to a hip band, a decent DJ, or possibly spot a celeb of the NME ilk, this is the place to spend your Friday night. read more

Nice venue, with a good downstairs dancefloor and stage and a smoking terrace upstairs. The smoking terrace has a shelter over it, with plenty of space, so really good if it's raining (as it was last week when I went) I think they have a variety of nights on, all of which are on their website and myspace. The night I went to was 'Prom Night', which was pretty fun...though some of the music was a little recent for the 80's cheese theme! Drinks are average for a night out in London. One problem-they only accept card for transactions over a tenner. Allin in all a fun night for a bit of a laugh. read more

Used to frequent this place all the time when I lived in the area. Loved the atmosphere here, with bands, good music, nice staff, good crowd and a generally fun night. Although i've been to the pub a few times recently, and it has definitely seen an influx of non-regulars and a different clientele, unfortunately this is now reflected in the way the establishment runs. Pricier drinks and bad music, the once good upstairs area has now been totally changed. Cheesy graffiti now covers the walls and floors of the upstairs bar, which only a few months back used to be a grubby little chill out space. The smoking area is now so strict and so are there guys on the door, you almost get the feeling you could be drinking in Soho. Admittedly the line up of live bands is still strong and the nights are still fun, but apart from that, this pub/bar is slowly transforming into another boring Shoreditch/Hoxton bar. Let's hope it doesn't complete the transformation too soon. read more

Hoxton is full of bars providing live music, but none are quite as grungy as the Macbeth. Situated halfway down Hoxton Street, it would be quite easy to walk straight past, if it wasn't for the dirty riffs permeating the pubs walls. The venue does host a variety of music most nights of the week, and is very often free, the beer is fine, and the nights can get messy. In an area where cool is the rule, the Macbeth doesn't follow trends, and is all the better for it. read more

I first went to this hidden Hoxton bar when a friend of mine was playing a gig there and surrounded by mates and decent music, I thought it was genius. And reasonable for the Old Street location. But when we returned some Fridays later, what sight should meet our eyes but a ton of over-dressed Shoreditch types trying not to gurn too aggressively and unsure how to pose at the same time as shuffling to Girls Aloud. There was a girl on the dance floor touching herself at one point. Don't think it was ironic. In short - a nice enough venue, just take care what night you go there or you may get a nasty surprise. read more

I was pretty excited when I moved seconds down the road from the Macbeth, I'd always been in for gigs that various good promoters had put on, and was almost certain I'd become a regular. It's been a year now, and I think I've been in less than five times, and I can't quite figure out why. I'm in my early 20s and yet feel old here... and though I adore the rooftop smoking terrace (free burgers & folk one sunday? yes please) I find myself cringing at overheard conversations and wincing at overly polished quiffs & creepers. So my overall consensus? A great place to come once in a while, if you're okay about being stared up an down once you enter, then when you're at the bar, then when you're in the toilet, oh and when smoking too... hm, maybe I do know why. read more

The Macbeth host a good range of promoters throughout the week, who with their different music taste, contacts and audience give each night a refreshingly new atmosphere. The crowd are mostly young fashionable types complete with skinny jeans, leggings, tattoos and colourful t-shirts. If you're looking to catch the next Libertines, Laura Marling or even Sway before fame entices them to bigger venues then make sure you make it down to The Macbeth. read more

Honestly wish they would let less people in as they do not have enough space for people to dance and actually have a good time. Every time when I am walking towards The Macbeth I have my doubts, as the street always seems so dead and there is nothing pointing out that there would be any parties around, but also every time I walk in from the door I go " Oh, here is where everyone is! Confussing! Is this place a metal, or is it a trendster bar. It looks and feels like a metal bar. the clientele wear a lot of black and long haired men and women looking like Elvira. but I couldn't see any band t-shirts which is the normal give away! The music was distinctively 'gothy' in tone, the walls are faux stone, it's dingy and lit with candles and fairy lights but there were quite a few high top! Great gig venue however! Cheap drinks, bands and life drawing events are a definetly a pro, but it is run down and can get quite busy if you're looking for a quiet night out. Do however check out upstairs where you'll find a black and white graffitied quiet room and a small outdoor beer garden which is great in summer. read more

Lovely grubby pub/ bar away from the swanky uber trendy bars in the heart of Shoreditch. The range of nights held here is super eclectic and also bolstered by their knack of picking ace live acts too. The place itself is kind of grim- it looks as if they've just self-consciously kept the dingy old pub decor a la Old Blue Last. But I've had many a good and messy night here, especially as the bar staff are for some reason really keen on getting you hammered. read more

Just discovered this place the other night when I went with a friend who wanted to see Naked and the Boys, who were playing there. It's a cool little place, with a bar area, pool table and sofa area, and also a strange little gallery upstairs which looks more like someone's living room. They've always got different and interesting live music going on there, so it's a good place to check out. read more

Just looked like some random pub, but go inside and this place amazes you. With events ranging from rock to hip hop nights it is versatile, edgy, different and generally a great place to party. alot of the time it is free entry, sometimes it is quite sometimes it is packed depends on the day, check out their website for events that they carefully update. apprantky according to a review below me there is free wifi.shall factor that into my next visit. not that ill rememeber while im dancing and downing all that alcohol. great place, looks cool. definately one of those places that should be discovered. read more

It would be a good idea if the information on this site was correct. Public Transport - Nearest station for the Macbeth is Old Street, ... er, No! Look at your Tube Map, or London Oyster Network Map. Nearest station is now Hoxton on the rebuilt Overground Lines. This is the extended East London Line which was the Underground and is now the Overground. Trains go from Highbury & Islington every 8 - 10 minutes, or Dalston Jct through to Surrey Quays every 5 minutes, until about 22.30, then less frequently, 10 - 20 minutes until midnight. If you are using any Overground Line ask for a Timetable as it runs like the Underground during the day, trains no less than every 15 minutes, but after 22.00 hrs some trains only run every 30 minutes, although most services are 10 to 20 minutes. read more

Good venue and great music sadly truly arrogant and useless bar staff. Do NOT serve a tainted-tasting slush puppy as 'a cocktail' then over charge the punters and get seriously stroppy with them when they dare to ask for a refund / different drink because they don't want to poison themselves. truly stupid experience here last night - my friend had beef with the jumped up barman, cos he dared to sit on the bar when the gig started. this place is absolutely tiny and we've came to see gigs here many times before and perched on the bar to watch whoever is playing. it's always so rammed there is never any hope of anyone moving, let alone managing to get served, when people are squished right up against the bar. ANYWAY. the barman was a jumped up little snot who had a total power trip and got my friend thrown out by his big, burly bouncer friend. honestly, if he didn't want people sitting on the bar, fair enough, but don't throw a shit fit over it, it's no big deal! it would never have happened in a bigger, or less cliquey venue as the bouncer could have reasonably seen that my friend and the barman had just had a disagreement, and that it was ridiculously unfair to power trip and throw him out (missing the guy he'd came to see play) over it. yes, the crowds who come here can be fun when they are really into the bands they come to see (& it's always nice to see local bands being so well supported), but poor attitudes from staff means it's not likely i will ever return here, and nor will my extended group of friends. thanks for wasting our money, macbeth, you actual cretins! The Macbeth is one of those amazing places that you just wouldnt imagine. It looks like an old East End pub, in fact it is, but it is also one of the greatest music venues in East London. With regular band nights and some of the best London bands and DJs it is almost guaranteed a good night. There is a roof top terrace too which is great and not just for the smokers. The average entrance on a gig night is around £3 which is not much and the some of the bands that play are really good. One to keep an eye on as there can be some great nights on here. read more
