I heard so many positive things about this place I wanted to to be great. Sadly the food wasn't great at all. Mid at best. Poor at worst. The crab cakes were TERRIBLE! Some of the worst I've ever had. My waitress Julia tried to say everyone has particular crab cakes tastes, but I told her these crab cakes were burnt and objectively bad. I will note that the mussels and soup were good. The Grouper and Wahoo were just okay. While vacationing in St Thomas we had a free night. Took a ride to Red Hook. Had a couple of cocktails at Magies and took a shot at XO Bistro. We got a table. After doing some research on Yelp this place kept coming up. We wanted a little more upscale place and this seemed pretty good. We made a reservation, which I do recommend as it got pretty busy. Service was great and everything came out in a timely manner. I ordered the Filet Mignon. The flavor of this dish was tasty but the filet was a tad over cooked for what I asked for. My biggest reason 4 stars vs 5 was how loud it got in there. Like I said before they got pretty busy but there was a group of guys that clear had a few before coming to dinner and they were very loud and a little obnoxious. I was excited to try this restaurant based on previous Yelp reviews and posted menus. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The wine menu was good and had several great choices. Our server was great. Where the restaurant fell off was the food and ambiance. I will start with the ambiance which was the biggest negative for me. I was expecting an upscale, somewhat intimate dining experience. Instead, the whole restaurant was overwhelmed by a sauced collection of frat-bros competing for the title of loudest of the loud. The food was OK. I ordered the lamb shank pot pie. I guess you can say it was deconstructed (?) because it was more of a soup with a potato filled pastry on top. For appetizers, we shared the ceviche and bruschetta, both plated beautifully and packed with fresh, vibrant flavors. For mains, we went all out -- stuffed chicken over rice with a side of vegetables, lamb chops with garlic mashed potatoes, and a surf & turf plate with steak, shrimp, and more of those buttery mashed potatoes. Stayed in Sapphire Beach for about a week and actually had dinner here twice. The first time was via reservation and second was with some luck that bar space opened when we walked in. Lots of locals and visitors to chat with but it was the bar staff that made this place to us outstanding. They were so attentive that at times it felt like private dining. We had shrimp, caprese salad and split a ribeye one night and a filet mignon the other. Each meal was cooked perfectly and plentiful (took some home). We highly recommend it. Enjoy! read more

This restaurant used to be one of our favorites. We've been coming here for about 15 years, but unfortunately, today will be our last visit. It's disappointing to see that the owners no longer seem to care about the quality of service their customers receive. Please, see also reviews about roaches and fruit flies in the food. We had the rudest waitress "Shaina" and the worst customer service we've experienced anywhere. My wife and I ordered the same dish. While my wahoo was cooked perfectly, my wife's was completely raw inside. The meals also arrived without the plantains, and the waitress said she would bring them out once ready--but they never came. Because the restaurant was dimly lit, my wife didn't notice the fish was raw at first and asked me to check. When I used my phone flashlight, it was obvious it was uncooked. When we informed the waitress/bartender, she made it seem like it was my wife's fault and even told her it was "okay to eat raw fish." She took the plate, and we expected a properly cooked replacement, but no fish ever came... and neither did the plantains. After waiting, I asked her if my wife was still getting a new piece of fish and what happened to the plantains. She responded with attitude and rudeness, asking, "You still want the plantains?" She also claimed my wife had eaten 75% of the dish, which was simply not true. Her behavior was unprofessional and completely unacceptable. To the owner: you have not only lost loyal customers who have recommended your restaurant for years, but you are also losing many others who refuse to return after being treated so disrespectfully. We are not tourists--we are locals--and we will not be coming back or bringing anyone to this establishment again. read more

The ambiance and service was good. However the food was disappointing. I ordered the mahi mahi ceviche, shrimp linguini, and lamb chops. All were a 1/10. Mahi mahi ceviche was dry and the wonton chips seemed slightly stale and chewy. The Shrimp linguini with the garlic and white wine sauce was not reduced, sauce was alcoholic and watery. Why did I not check with Yelp first?!? We chatted with a couple at the pizza spot we got food from the night before. They raved about XO Bistro, especially the lamb chops, so we had to give it a try! We were seated immediately and drink orders were taken. The strawberry vodka cocktail with Himalayan Salt rim was perfect. Everything went down hill when our meal was served. We began seeing fruit flies on the table. I smashed two of them and figured they were rogue bugs that got into the restaurant. I couldn't have been more wrong. Another review on Yelp mentioned a roach, so I most certainly would have avoided this restaurant had I checked Yelp reviews beforehand. A lesson learned. Fruit flies were crawling throughout my friend's Thai salad. I was able to keep the bugs off my lamb chops while he sought the attention of the server. Upon request, she moved us to another table and offered to have the kitchen prepare a new Thai salad. She shared that the fruit flies are present when the kitchen doesn't take out the garbage. She went on to say that the owner was aware of the fruit fly problem, but hasn't sent anyone yet. Ok, disappointing, but the new table seemed to be the remedy. My friend was brought a fresh salad as I enjoyed my lamb chops dinner. He's about halfway through his salad when a fruit fly lands on his plate and another is on an obstacle course through the pieces of lettuce. He threw in the towel (napkin). This problem was again brought to the attention of our server. She smiled and told us there was nothing she could do about the fruit flies and left the bill. I wonder if we had problems at the dining table if the kitchen also is having the fruit fly issue. Truly let down by XO Bistro. 2/5 because the lamb chops were fantastic and the cocktail hit the spot. However, had the fruit flies shown themselves in his 2nd salad before I finished the lamb chops, I wouldn't have been able to complete my meal either. I was excited about going to XO. I am disappointed to say that it did not live to my expectations. I am giving it 3 stars because the service was outstanding and the drinks the bartender made were well crafted. Upon seating we ordered the brie as an appetizer and jt was actually delicious but our main course were both a serious disappointment. My husbands duck was tough, the sauce was overpowering and it felt like they were trying to mask the flavor with the sauce and my pasta was very citrusy, I could barely eat it. We then ordered dessert and the bread pudding was so dry and flavorless it did not make things better. Maybe we went on a night the chef was having a bad day. I've been to EXO many times and usually their food is good but last night I ordered the ribeye steak, which wasn't inexpensive. The steak was horrible. It was full of fat and gristle and being a dark room. It was hard to tell the difference between the meat and the gristle until you chew it. I was very disappointed in this meal and when I was done, I went down the block to send you a pizza and got three slices of pizza. read more

I had a very enjoyable meal here. I order the lamb shank pot pie. The lamb was perfectly cook in an aromatic broth with a lovely array of vegetables. The service was very goo as well. I have two small critiques. the music was way too loud to enjoy conversations and the Puff pastry was not cooked. It contained mashed potatoes which were tepid and the bottom was raw dough. it would be MUCH better to cook those separately and fully the place it on top of the filling. Stopped in after fishing. Nice little spot inside a shopping center. Bartender/waitress was super friendly and attentive. Apps: Street Corn Guac: it was good. I usually feel like I have to add salt or lime to guacamole but this was spot on. Not a big fan of wontons as the chips, I think I prefer tortillas but overall it was pretty good. Garlic Bread: anything with lots of cheese as a hit so this worked out great. Steak Wrap: It had some sort of sauce that made everything a little bit soggy and the wrap fall apart. Otherwise it tasted pretty good and the meat tasted great all on its own. Mahi Wrap: All I can say about this was that it tasted OK. There's nothing really wrong with it, it was just ok. My friend and I were recommended this place by another tourist. They promised it was real good, so I was definitely disappointed when it did live up to the hype. The appetizers, which I took pictures of, were a good size and could have been our entrees. Those dishes were tasty, not the best, but tasty. I got the chicken wrapped in bacon dish. I don't know if the cook just ran out of seasoning that day but it was bland, very flavorless. I love bacon and I don't know how they took the flavor out of that. The drinks, on the other hand, were very good. I ordered an espresso martini that was real good. I would recommend this spot only for the drinks which is why I gave the 2 stars. XO Bistro is one of my favorite places for lunch and happy hour. It's one of the few places on the island with a parking lot and its conveniently located near the Red Hook Ferry Terminal (official name is the Urman Victor Fredericks Marine Terminal). It's a convenient restaurant to go to after visiting St. John. There is additional parking in the back, if you cant find any in the front. Happy Hour is pretty much all day except from 6-10pm. Lunch is served 11am-5pm and Dinner is served 5pm to closing. I love the cocktails here. Monday is $7 Stoli martinis; Thursday is $6 Tito's cocktails; Friday is Kettle One cocktails for $6 and Kettle One martinis for $8. I have never been disappointed grabbing lunch here. My favorite appetizer is the STREET CORN GUACAMOLE it's topped with chipotle street corn and feta drizzled with truffle oil served with wantons, it is absolutely amazing!! My favorite lunch entrée is the PRIME DIP, it is slow roasted Prime Rib, sliced and topped with Swiss cheese, on toasted French bread served with au jus and horseradish cream sauce. I ordered this with a Caesar side salad, but the Pasta Salad is a local favorite. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

When first entering I thought "oh, it looks like a bar". It turned out to be a very small, quaint restaurant. They have a regular food menu as well as nightly specials and a very large drink menu. Our waitress was a sweet young lady who took great care of her customers. She made several food and wine suggestions for us. We started with the caprese salad which was delicious. I had the local Wahoo dish with vegetables and they aloud me to switch out the plantains (I don't like plantains) for the risotto. My friend ordered the stuffed chicken, our two girls had the chicken salad and lasagna. All of the food was great. It is quite pricey but we enjoyed all of the food. The only downside was I spent the night in the bathroom. We had not eaten all day so I knew it had to have been something from dinner that upset my stomach. I don't understand any of the good reviews. I had a party of 15 people and I'd say 7 did not enjoy their meal at all. The only ones that did enjoy it were the ones who ordered the Mahi. I'll start with mine I had the scallops. They were HIGHLY recommended and very expensive. They had zero sear, and the fresh taste was tainted by a sweet bacon glaze. Not appropriate for scallops. They were served with steamed vegetables and competent risotto. Not work the thirty something dollar price tag. My boyfriend had the NY strip which was sadly over cooked to death. It was served with a port "reduction". Reduction is in quotes because it wasn't at all reduced. It tasted like they just splashed port on the steak. Too acidic, too sweet, too thin. Again with steak vegetables and mashed potatoes. My boyfriends brother had the seared tuna which was... just okay. High price for ... okay. We left pretty disappointed to say the least. read more

Every time we go to XO we are super impressed! The drinks are delicious from the sangria to the martini's. The atmosphere is cozy with a nice large bar that is usually jam packed. But the food is the star of the show! The espresso rubbed rib eye is phenomenal, didn't finish it all so I ate my left overs the next day and it was still delicious! My husband had the Mahi special which was a little spicy for me so I didn't eat much of it but he loved it. We also had the appetizer shrimpscargot which is always great. This is a tough place to rate. The food was a 5+, but the service was a zero. This is a busy restaurant, and you will need a reservation to get a table or you will wait over an hour. That said, they don't seem to be staffed to handle the tables they seat. It took more than 10 minutes to even be acknowledged after we sat down. Our server was also a bartender and that may have been part of the problem. Food and drink orders were very slow as well. Also they added a mandatory 20% gratuity to our group of 4 (menu says they add this to 6 or more.) It's almost like they knew they hadn't earned a good tip. On the positive side, the food was incredible! We tried the following: Baked Brie in a Puff Pastry - really tasty and a good size for 2 to share. Chicken Gnocchi Soup - this soup of the day had a nice flavor and the addition of Gnocchi was a creative idea. Shrimp Scargot - a creative alternative to escargot, but with Shrimp. Super tasty and includes bread to soak up the garlicky butter. Bacon Wrapped and Stuffed Chicken Breast - also a unique blend of flavors. The spicy Brie stuffing could be a bit much if you are sensitive to spicy food, but I loved it. Bottom line - go for the food and hope for better service than we had. Although the locale may be a bit unassuming as it is situated within a bustling strip center, you would be doing yourself a disservice by not coming here while in St. Thomas. It was a genuinely refreshing experience in comparison to the rest of the area eateries. Food & Drink: Whether you're looking for something light or heavy, you will find that XO Bistro has a variety of food offerings. Additionally, they have a truly extensive wine selection - their wine list is more of a light-read short story rather than just a list- truly an extensive selection! You may want to try the Catch of the Day Ceviche if you're in the mood for something light and fresh - the Wahoo ceviche was delicious and not overpowered by the lime. The accompanying wonton disks added an incredible texture that I never knew I needed! Shrimp scargot was quite filling as the toasted goat cheese and crostinis accompanied the buttery goodness of the shrimp. The Espresso-rubbed Ribeye was perfectly cooked at the requested degree of doneness and was topped with a gorgonzola cream sauce that complemented the dish well without being overtly salty/pungent. The scallops were just slightly over cooked but the addition of bacon jam to the dish was able to save it. Plus, the rest of my experience here was so positive that I just shrugged it off without much of a thought.
