Argh! I was so excited to go back here after I learned that it reopened. This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant. Unfortunately, things have gone downhill in a major way. The food was below average at best. The chips were soggy that came with the salsa. The tortillas were as thick as a pancake, which over-powered the taste of everything that was within. Of the 4 of us that were there, only one somewhat enjoyed their meal. On top of the below quality food, the service was even worse. We were the only ones in the restaurant for lunch and our waitress never once came to check in with us after we received our food. She stood at the register the entire time on her phone. We sat the entire service without drink refills or other items that we needed. On top of that, the waitress accidentally knocked over my daughter's drink when we first got it. She cleaned it up but didn't bother asking to get her another. What a shame. Hopefully they can turn things around quickly! read more

We came here for lunch, an unplanned stop during our drive home from church. The prices are very reasonable and good portions. The restaurant is in the back of the Mexican store, it is a good size restaurant..guessing can fit 30-40 people in there. We ordered the chicken dish, shrimp dish and sweet plantains... Decent and hidden Mexican spot in Souderton. Recently moved to area and was in the mood for tacos. Through the storefront window, all you see is a Mexican grocer. You have to walk straight to the back to get to restaurant. The hubs had 3 pollo tacos. I had 1 pollo, 1 chorizo and 1 al pastor. I liked the pollo y chorizo. I've tasted better al pastor tacos elsewhere. I was also in the mood for platanos fritos. These came out nice and hot served with beans and crema. The salsa was fresh and slightly spicy, a good combo for me. read more

I just ordered from here for the first time after reading all the good reviews. After picking up the food and getting really excited with the aroma in the car, I was so disappointed when I opened up my Tacos Gobernador (shrimp tacos). It's to come with avocados. You would think that they would offer nice looking avocados but they had black spots all over it!!! It looked diseased. Very disgusting! I called them and asked them why they have black spots all over it. I have never seen it served in a restaurant like this. He puts me on hold; gets back on and tells me it's stain from Pico de Gallo sauce! What a load of crap! I googled to see if it's ok to eat and it said not if they have black spots and streaks all over it. I threw it out. My daughter also had these rotten avocados in her chicken platter! This was a very disappointing dinner! I will never go back! read more

This has become my favorite local Mexican spot now that I've had their hand made sopes. And they have green apple Sidral soda. They're a bit further so I don't get here as often. It's tucked in the back of a Mexican grocery, which I love, but "done up" with sit down restaurant finishes. Their menu is not like the other local places. It's a bit larger and if you ask the right questions, almost any combination of ingredients are possible. Although I find that to be true at the other local places too. On the last couple of visits one with my wife, and one alone, our server Alondra was very engaging. I'm very inquisitive about Mexican food, and she was all too happy to share. And if she didn't know, she asked the cooks. We also talked about various Mexican dishes not on the menu and of course she gave us plenty of tips. The food is great here. None of the local places I've been in this area makes fresh sopes. Until I ate the Sopes Adobada here. Fresh sopes are always better! And ask for salsa roja. Spicy is good. I also took a dinner entree of Chuletas (pork chops) with rice and beans for later. A large platter with fried pork chops. I'm sure I will be back. Just wish they were closer to home. read more

I like this tienda. I was confused how to say the name until I asked, now I have a better idea. The restaurant in the back has great food. I recommend the cuban torta. The shop in front has some fresh produce and ingredients for Central American cooking. I love their selection of dried chilies as well as heavy creams in the refrigerated section. There is also a small medicine wall with Advil other types of medicines for coughs and colds, although they did not have benedril when I stopped on for some, or any other antihistamine. I shop here often because it's down the street from me, in additional the people here are very friendly. read more

I can't express my disappointment enough after trying this place for the first time. I had a chicken burrito and it was terrible. I can't even consider it a burrito, it was a tortilla filled with rice and that's about it ..... really bad.I didn't even encounter a piece of chicken until I was 80 percent finished . It was a quarter inch piece of chicken, so small I thought it could be a bean. The green salsa was really very good and I also tried the taquito and it was also pretty good but certainly not deserving of 4.5 stars on yelp. I think there were a few things that magnified my negative experience. For one this place has 4.5 stars and the second is that I was Really hungry and really expecting a delicious burrito! I have many friends in Souderton and the people are very nice . I think that there are two reasons this place had 4.5 stars : Souderton has the worst restaurant scene of any town I know, there just aren't any good bars or restaurants in Souderton ( Northbound just opened and it is decent but tries too hard to impress) . This is the only Mexican restaurant within many miles so I don't think most of these reviews came from people that know quality Mexican food, Chipotle's burrito blows the one I had away. I wonder if the 5 star reviewers have even been to a Chipotle? Also , it seems like this place does a nice business so lease one of the vacant storefronts and open a bodega, then make a real restaurant out of this place . I have never been to a bodega with a restaurant in it , or is it a restaurant with a bodega? Either way it's a weird set up.. Wonderful authentic Mexican food! A big thanks to Yelpers for helping me find this hidden gem as most of the "Mexican" places around Philly are not truly Mexican, but chains or Americanized "Mexican" food. First off, go here for the food! As others stated, it's in the back of a Mexican grocer with only a few tables and chairs next to the kitchen (picture included). It's more of a takeout place than a sit down and eat place, although you can certainly do so, but it's not a full-size restaurant. Second, the menu is huge with entree names in Spanish, so make sure to read the ingredients, which are in English, to ensure you get what you want. I wanted chicken fajitas, but had to order them individually versus other places where you order skillet fajitas and receive several tortillas on the side. Each fajita is $3.50. At first I was not thrilled about this idea as I like to put together my own fajitas, but they couldn't have been more perfect! I ordered three chicken fajitas and each one was prepared with layers of refried beans, made-to-order grilled chicken, lettuce, real Mexican cheese, avocados, sour cream, and tons of flavor...better than I could have prepared and quite large (photo included). They have a mixed fajita entree with chicken, shrimp, and beef that comes as one large order versus individually, but if you want all chicken (or all beef) like I did, you must order the individual ones. You will NOT be disappointed. I found it easier to order our to-go meal in person and wait 15-20 minutes for it versus over the phone as language barriers do exist. They make everything fresh as you order it, and it's worth the wait. I also ordered chips and a large guacamole to go, which was delicious. The guac was a bit spicy, but not too much and had no strong lime flavor, which means it was made fresh. Limey guac is never good unless you like the taste of it, but no thanks. :) Their prices are reasonable and even better than the non-authentic Mexican places around Philly, you can't beat it for the taste. I've known this place existed, but then was always so skeptical about going in. It's tiny-- is a grocery store? Restaurant? Are you sure? Ahh-- forget it-- let's just go someplace else. Today, after speaking with yet another friend that told me I just have to try it, we did! After her coaching of how it does feel a little weird walking through a grocery store to the back where the restaurant is, I finally said ok- we are going! Wow wow wow- delicious! We started out with chip and guacamole. A little on the pricier side of $9.50, but chips were delish. I'm a little used to a chunkier guacamole, but the flavor was on point. I got 3 chicken tacos and they were so good! My friends and kids got the burritos and they were humongous AND delish! Thank you Yelp Community for another solid recommendation. The Reverend Dr. Steak and I headed over to Xinantecatl for dinner while the NMT was at practice in nearby Harleysville. As others have described, the Taqueria is located in the rear of the storefront Bodega. It is tiny, maybe 12 feet wide by 20 feet long, with maybe 5 utilitarian tables set up. You order at the grill. While we were waiting, other customers, some from SoCal, raved about the food. They were not wrong. Everything here is cooked fresh, to oder, and it is so wonderfully noticeable. We ordered chips & salsa. 15 minutes before the chips were served they were normal tortillas. They were crisp, slightly salty, and quite good. Salsa was tomatillo, nice medium heat. Both of us got our bellwether dish, the Chimichanga. I ordered it as described, with the unusual addition of broccoli to the mix. The Rev. got his without broccoli. Both were excellent, again fresh, not over fried, the broccoli I thought added a nice tang to the meal. Service was friendly and reasonably efficient. We got our own drinks from the nearby cooler - everything from US drinks to Fanta to Mexican Coca Cola (yum!). On our way out we picked up some chili chips for the NMT which he happily ate after practice. This is a no-frills, authentic Mexican Taquiera, and one worth visiting again. read more

They updated the restaurant and it looks beautiful, don't let the front of the store fool you. It looks like a grocery store but if you continue to walk to the back you will see the restaurant. The waitress was super friendly and the food was perfectly seasoned. I ordered chips and guacamole and an entree of Mexican style steak.... Can't forget the banana soda. I've been searching for a taqueria for a while near Lansdale. So this past Saturday, my dad suggested we get Mexican food and we drove to Souderton where there was a promising restaurant named Xinantecatl. In my experience, mexican restaurants in the US that are named in mesoamerican languages tend to be good. This one was a small mexican grocery store with a room/open kitchen in the back and 4 tables. One of the tables was occupied with a Mexican woman chatting up the chef in spanish and her Indian date. The chef, Juan, was a pretty cool guy and apparently worked with a lot of Indians, who he labeled hard workers (bonus points in his book). He also seemed to like the indian food his co-workers brought to lunch. Juan hooked us up with a couple great tortas, tacos and a shrimp and potato soup that has the house special. The tortas were excellent and I'll go back for those. I've recently been transitioning away from tacos to the torta as my go-to carb accompaniment to the meat...and this place re-inforced that. Juan was the man and mentioned that the owner and his son (Juan's brother and father in law) are renowned for his whole goat barbacoa...hopefully they start cooking that up in the summer. Pros: The tortas....don't be an idiot and get something else because you are trying to be different...just get it, enjoy and then order something else. For extra special, ask Juan to soften up a Jalepano on the grill for you. Cons: Barbacoa isn't on the menu....c'mon fellas...please make that happen. read more

I only live a few blocks away but always seem to go here during the chaos of Souderton's Third Friday's. You have to wait awhile but the food is always spot on. We usually get our food to go since the seats are always taken. Last time I got the shrimp burrito with chips and guacamole. Really excellent. In the 4 months I have been living here I don't think my fiance and I have gone more than a week without takeout from here. The food is delicious and fresh, and the workers are always really friendly. To top it off the prices are really reasonable as well. I crave Mexican food on a monthly basis (yup) and I was born and raised in southern California where great Mexican food is on every corner. I was a little skeptical on the food because the restaurant is tiny. But I gotta tell you, the food I ordered was pleasantly surprising. And very nice and friendly. Ordered takeout from here tonight. Had the special shrimp tacos, which were probably the best tacos I've had outside of Mexico, including living 7 years in Phoenix. My kids had the chicken and steak tacos and both were very good. Portions are plenty big. Wife ordered a steak enchilada which she really enjoyed. Overall very fresh and great tasting. My husband and I are new to the area - we're moving from Philly to the burbs and one of the things he'll miss the most is the philly food scene. We decided to venture out and try some of the local food to get a feel for the town and we were not disappointed with Xinantecatl! We started with an order of chips and guacamole. The tortilla chips were fried fresh and delivered HOT! The cool guacamole (which, btw, was phenomenal) paired with the steamy chips was a perfect combo! For entrees I got the cheese enchiladas, which were pretty good. I prefer red enchilada sauce and a little more kick, but the green sauce wasn't too bad! The tortillas were def prepped fresh in the kitchen and the cheesy goodness inside the enchilada was a hit! My husband got the chicken fajitas which were DELICIOUS. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and they def don't skimp on the grilled veggies. My husband and I prefer a little more spice and will probably be asking for jalapeños/hot sauce the next time we come, but that's a quick fix! The decor/ambiance is pretty simple but I'm okay with that as long as the food is good :) don't let the look of the place fool you - we def didn't miss the glitz and glam of Phillys Mexican restaurants while eating here! read more

This is by far the best Mexican in the area. Enchiladas are fantastic. Chicken tacos also really good. My kids live the shrimp lime burrito.

It's a hole in the wall shop with very confusing decor and vibes, but very friendly staff. The service is slightly slow and it's hard to discern the freshness of the ingredients at times, but all-in-all, it's great. The prices are cheap, portions are fair, and flavoring is on point. I felt compelled to write a review about Xinantecatl for two reasons: 1.) The food 2) The service First and foremost, what this place has to offer is absolutely spectacular. An adobada special burrito and three different tacos (biztec, adobada, and chorizo)-- the meat was tender and flavorful and the spices/seasoning was spot on. I'm already thinking about what to order the next time I go visit. Second, when we first walked into the restaurant, we were greeted with smiles and the service was excellent. I had a few questions about the menu (i.e. difference between al pastor and adobada) and the lady answered everything very kindly. It's always a plus to feel welcomed and comfortable (especially when you want to get the order right). Overall, five stars is what this place deserves. I can't wait to go back next week. read more
