Ok, I'm from SF so I'm used to eating quite amazing Chinese food. Honestly expected this new, spacious, and lovely restaurant to have the usual Hong Kong carts of dim sum. But no. You order off the menu. My extended family likes to get together during Chinese NY so 15 of us went there last Sunday. I thought it was pretty good but my niece loved and raved about the food and the place. She especially loved the hot and spicy soup and the char siu bao. I loved the beef chow fun. The service was great and attentive. So yesterday I took my husband (he had to work Sunday) for his input. He loved it! He told our waitress (she's gotta be the head waitress) that the hot and spicy soup was the best he's ever had, so fresh! She was so tickled I thought she was going to cry! He also loved the soup dumplings and the beef chow fun was the best he's had. So we agreed this place is the best Chinese food in PDX (this includes ambience, service, and food). Great dumplings & in the heart of Sellwood! Xin Ding Dumpling House is a nice addition to the neighborhood, taking over the old Hollar building. The pork xiao long bao (XLB) and the eggplant/green bean dishes were both solid. Prices & portions are right in line with other Chinese spots in town, with main dishes meant to be shared by 2-4 people. Love that they are a locally owned mini-chain (only 3 locations in PDX) and not a massive corporation. Plus, the location is unbeatable for a night out, just a block or 2 walking distance to both Nectar Froyo and Dairy Hill Ice Cream for a post-dinner treat! It's a large, open dining space with traditional Chinese furniture & decor great for large parties, and a separate bar area (with sports tv) for those looking for a more casual meal. read more

We come here all the time, especially when we have friends visiting from out of town. It's such a delicious and consistent choice. The downtown location has, in our experience, usually been a longer wait so keep that in mind if you have a big group. The newer sellwood location is a little quieter but just as good! This is easily our favorite restaurant in Portland. read more

Everything on the menu here is phenomenal. I love this Cell location because it's nice and spacious so it is awesome for groups. They have a nice bar area so if you want to watch sports that's also an option with great Chinese food. I love Szechuan style food because spicy food plus tons of flavor is always a win. We always start off with Bao or dumplings. Love the spicy wontons in chili oil (no need to get my fix at DTF Anymore. The string bean dish and broccoli dish is a great palette cleanser. Every single time we come here we get a dried pot (most of the time shrimp)It's spicy, it's salty, it's flavor to the max! The Chong Qing chicken is always crispy. Family style is the way to go here. Service is always friendly but not overbearing. read more

This space is really large and can accommodate big groups. The food ia delicious. I got the green beans and Japanese eggplant and it was incredible. Out table also shared the dan dan noodles which was the perfect blend of peanut and spice. I will definitely be back. The menu is full of different things to try. read more

What do you get? Super fast service. And friendly too. Lots of seating so if there is a line it moves quickly. Lots of wonderful dumplings. Pork is the best. Great sides - the roasted green beans (and I'm not a big green fan) are amazingly good. A great meeting spot as they have very large tables for groups. read more

Noted tastes were the dan dan noodles and the dried green beans - great flavor, nice spice level (good enough for them, I could have used a bit more). Hands down my new favorite restaurant in SE! I highly recommend the Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup - the beef was extremely tender and I finally found a Szechuan that is worthy of the spice level (tip: it's even spicier the next day). I am not a fan of green beans but had to try them due to the hype. I can now say I love green beans! But only these ! The service was 10 star top notch! Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful with recommendations, service was quick and cocktails were flowing. My only regret is not asking to see if they had a side of spicy chili oil for the soup dumplings. Trust me, there will be a next time! read more

I've been to the other location downtown but it's been a while. We got food to go because it was so busy when we tried to go in. We couldn't even talk to any staff so just went to a bar nearby and ordered online for pickup, which was actually pretty fast. We got the chicken potstickers, which were pretty bland, shrimp Har gow which were decent, mapo dofu, and the spicy fried Szechuan fish. The mapo and fish were very spicy - as we expected. I thought the mapo was just meh and the food overall wasn't as good as what we'd had before at the other location. They also don't give rice by default which was annoying since that caught us by surprise. Spicy dishes definitely need rice! With all the other places that have cropped up for dumplings and Szechuan food, I'd probably go elsewhere unless I were already in the neighborhood. read more

We ordered several dishes, and while everything tasted good, the portions felt smaller compared to the downtown location. The rice bowls we got also had some lint in them, which wasn't great. They did just open recently, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but there's definitely some room for improvement. read more

Walked by NYE - we had no idea they opened in Sellwood! Really excited to have this type of restaurant in the area. We ordered soup dumplings, potstickers, and general tso's chicken. It all tasted great. The chicken had a light crispy batter (not too thick) and the sauce had flavor (not super sweet). The staff was attentive and friendly. I also liked how the decor was pretty traditional for this kind of dining experience - it wasn't "portlandified" (iykyk). We will be back to try more dishes - I'm hoping they have moo shu. *Fingers crossed* read more

Delicious food. Great service. The food here is as good as almost any Chinese food in town. They prepare and serve the food very quickly. Extensive menu. Fresh ingredients. Very well prepared. The only drawback is that prices are a smidge high for the quantity that you get, especially compared to other Chinese restaurants where it is common to take large portions home. To be clear, the portions are fair. Absolutely enough for a meal. So the price point doesn't make the restaurant bad, it's delicious and definitely worth the (repeat) visit, but if I had any feedback it would be larger portions for all that deliciousness. I might even say they could charge just a tiny bit more if they had more ample sizes. Otherwise, a great addition to Westmoreland and really, really good. read more

The food was good. No notes. The service, however, is strange. Went there on a quiet Wednesday. There were plenty of waitstaff and only about 6 tables of diners. We were a table of 5. We were rushed to order drinks and food at the same time. Then we waited. And waited. One drink was served. Then the food appeared. Then another drink. Eventually, after asking, the remaining drinks came out. I cannot figure out the issue, although they seemed to be spending more time on DoorDash orders than on the patrons in the room. We went Xmas Eve to have dim sum. The food was mediocre at best. The service was awful. we waited a very long time to be seated and when the waiter finally showed up, he was nearly useless. We ordered a pitcher of beer and had to ask for it 3 more times over a period of nearly 25 minutes. Many other patrons seated before we were had not yet been served after we finished our very bland food. There was a lot of yelling between someone getting to go orders bagged and the kitchen....ridiculous commotion. It was clear the place does not care much about customers in front of them. Nice new spot in town, to complement their one downtown. I'm half Chinese and grew up in SF so am biased towards the type of restaurant my Popo used to take us to. Love their xiao long bao and the place has nice large round tables for parties. Service was so-so, the waiter kept smiling but was very curt and took a while to come around. Lighting was kind of dim in the area we ate but otherwise nice atmosphere with a large panel print. Food is why it gets my vote--I was there for a birthday dinner so we know we love their dumplings (5stars) and other dishes were tasty but they don't have things like whole fish or large rice bowls family style--you have to order individual servings. It's a mish mash of comfort food with Americanized dishes and the spicy ma po tofu that advertises three chilis was maybe one chili spicy. Still, very positive experience. Right on the money with the dry fried green beans and soup dumplings, otherwise food is good but not fantastic or particularly authentic. It IS a place I would take non Chinese friends because it is all very accessible cuisine and is well done, especially for Portland. read more

Unfortunately, I had a bad experiences with our waitress. The dumplings were delicious, and we were about to order a dessert when the waitress approached us with the bill even before our plates were picked up, she did not ask if we wanted anything else. It took me by surprised because we were still enjoying our conversation and ready to order more. She appeared in a hurry for us to leave. I asked her if they were ready to close, since I felt pressured to pay and leave. I told her we were still wanting to order and she asked us what we wanted. At that point, my friend and I felt that we could not stay there any longer, so we paid and left. Even though, the dumplings were delicious, the rudeness of the waitress ruined our experience, and I am not sure I would go back there. My friend and I come from cultures where we enjoy sitting and conversing while we enjoy our meal, the restaurant had plenty of empty tables and there were no people waiting for tables. She helped us figure out gluten free items on the menu (there are quite a few though it was hard to tell online).
