For our weekend road trip down south, we wanted to try something different besides tandem…read moreparagliding and good food. We found Performance Archery and their 1-hour intro lesson for $40 per person. Pretty fair deal. Me, my wife, and both our boys all tried compound bows. It was a tiring but fun afternoon. The next day, me and my wife definitely felt some muscles we do not use often. LOL. Our instructor, Todd, was very helpful and encouraging. He explained what we, as complete newbies, needed to know without making it confusing. Safety, stance, how to hold the bow, how to aim, and how to release. Just enough to get us started and actually enjoy it. He also gave a lot of praise to my youngest son, who showed some real potential. It was his first time ever shooting a bow, and he hit yellow at 10 yards. Beginner's luck? Maybe once. But he kept hitting yellow again and again. Because of that, I asked my youngest, who is 15, if he wanted to continue with archery and see where it goes. He said yes, so we ended up getting him a package that should last him a few years: an Elite Archery Basin RTS, a release, arrows, and a bag. He was super happy. The staff was also very helpful in setting up the bow for him. They adjusted the draw length, draw weight, and peep sight, and made sure it fit him properly. The only sad part is that this place is far from home. I checked Yelp reviews for places closer to us, and honestly, they do not look as encouraging. Overall, this was a really good afternoon. For $40 per person, the intro lesson was worth it. Fun, educational, beginner-friendly, and maybe even the start of a new hobby for my son.

These guys were awesome, helped get my wife familiar with archery, which was something, given that…read moreshe's in a wheelchair! Will continue to go back!

Bring your own, and thin metal stakes to affix them to the targets. 2. The distances aren't clearly marked 3. Even if you find a couple distance markers, they aren't accurate. The 30 yard target is 33.5 from the firing line, etc. 4. No bathroom. There's a port-a-potty. 5. No drinking water nearby. 6. The bow stands are falling apart / in terrible shape. There's maybe the ability to hold one or two bows (badly) out there. 7. You have to go for the office and buy an archery permit which is $15 for the year. 8. Hours are roughly sunrise to Sunset (6:00am to 8:00pm in summer months). See signage I photographed for exact info. 9. As in every range, you must bring all your own gear. 10. Please know what you're doing, or have someone in your group who does (and who takes responsibility for your group). 11. It gets hot as hell out there. There's a cover to give some shade but it's insane, regardless. There's no shade at the shooting line. 12. Point your GPS at the Lake Poway Recreation Area to get to the parking associated with this range. 13. Since you have to park your vehicle at the lake Poway recreation area, non-residents must pay $15 per visit. Residents park free. 14. They accept any kind of official mail addressed to your local Poway address to qualify for the free parking pass. So... if you're a non-Poway Resident, and it's your first time there: bring your gear, come during the day, and expect to pay about $30: $15 for parking and $15 for the one year archery permit. Oh and if you come visit during the summer, be prepared for intense sizzling brain-melting heat.

From start to finish, Bruce and his team were incredibly thoughtful about finding the right fit for each child--not simply helping us choose a bow, but carefully fine-tuning each one specifically for them. They took the time to answer all of our questions, patiently work through the options, and make sure we were completely comfortable with the final choices without ever feeling rushed. And once the decisions were made, the tutorial was absolutely amazing. They took the time to teach the kids how to use their bows properly, safely, and confidently, which made the whole experience feel so much more personal and meaningful. There is a reason Bow N Arrow Shop has such fantastic reviews--and why it was referred to us by multiple people. The drive from the coastal side of San Diego was absolutely worth it. We now completely understand why places like Big 5, Amazon, and other big retailers pale in comparison. We will definitely take Bruce up on his offer to come back for a check up fitting after 150 arrows, and I have a feeling we may be bringing my husband back soon to get a bow of his own! Thank you, Bruce, and the entire Bow N Arrow Shop team, for such a wonderful experience. We couldn't recommend you more highly!
