I've been shooting that poundage for roughly a couple months maybe before I quickly got used to it (and bored of the poundage I was drawing), so I picked up a couple of 35 lb bows, both of which were a proper recurve, and a longbow. So went nearly six months. Not just a couple weeks ago, I picked up my first pair of 45 lb limbs for the same takedown recurve bow, after trying out a 40 lb, 45 lb and a 50 lb recurve of the same make. Countless arrows lost, a few tips gone or so, and every single time I came back, I didn't have a bad experience. Getting guidance from people like Sam (I think that's his name?), and a few others, with their varying personalities, one of which seemed non-verbally intense, but I think he won't bite anyone, I have to be very impressed with the service I get here. Though, sometimes when I show up here, I get the impression that either there's not enough employees there, or it just seems dead, so getting something done there can take more time than expected. Every time I came here to get a new bow, or even replacement shafts and tips, I always never felt pressured to buy something. I felt like I was in my own natural habitat. And using their indoor range at if I remember correctly $12/hr (or perhaps it's slightly less) is actually a pretty sweet deal, at least in my opinion. Though, the one thing I have to gripe about, are whenever I go to their indoor range on a particularly warm and humid or hot day, someone always leaves the back door of the indoor range wide open, while running the A/C, which makes indoor shooting not only uncomfortable but also frivolous. I don't wanna even start talking about how expensive running the A/C during those times really is. Overall, even though they are one of the very few archery stores available here in the county, I can vouch this place as a great place to go to get started with archery.

We found Performance Archery and their 1-hour intro lesson for $40 per person. Pretty fair deal. Me, my wife, and both our boys all tried compound bows. It was a tiring but fun afternoon. The next day, me and my wife definitely felt some muscles we do not use often. LOL. Our instructor, Todd, was very helpful and encouraging. He explained what we, as complete newbies, needed to know without making it confusing. Safety, stance, how to hold the bow, how to aim, and how to release. Just enough to get us started and actually enjoy it. He also gave a lot of praise to my youngest son, who showed some real potential. It was his first time ever shooting a bow, and he hit yellow at 10 yards. Beginner's luck? Maybe once. But he kept hitting yellow again and again. Because of that, I asked my youngest, who is 15, if he wanted to continue with archery and see where it goes. He said yes, so we ended up getting him a package that should last him a few years: an Elite Archery Basin RTS, a release, arrows, and a bag. He was super happy. The staff was also very helpful in setting up the bow for him. They adjusted the draw length, draw weight, and peep sight, and made sure it fit him properly. The only sad part is that this place is far from home. I checked Yelp reviews for places closer to us, and honestly, they do not look as encouraging. Overall, this was a really good afternoon. For $40 per person, the intro lesson was worth it. Fun, educational, beginner-friendly, and maybe even the start of a new hobby for my son.

He comes twice weekly for 90-Minute lessons for a fantastic workout, and really looks forward to each session. He shows me what he learns, and is super enthusiastic, and it's helped his hand/eye coordination, too. I love the instructors--they are friendly to boys and girls, and it's a positive and safe environment--and the kids really get a nice workout, working on balance and actual technique. I'm excited to see where this goes! I'm hoping I can convince these guys to help out with a fencing team once he starts high school. What a great sport!

Did I mention you will need a screwdriver, an arrow puller, and a buddy? Parking: park close to the park entrance. Parking fee: $5. Range Fee: $10/YEAR. Get the pass at the Lake Poway Concession bungalo (close to the dock). COPY/PASTE: Lake Poway Concession: 14644 Lake Poway Rd; Poway, CA 92064 I wish I could pay more so the park can afford better target platforms. Location: This range can be tricky to find. Just turn on the satellite image layer on your map app and remember to be wary of cross traffic. Walk up a little hill lined with gravel. ***********SAFETY WARNING!!!!************* DO NOT hop over the chained fence! You would be stepping into the line of fire. Many beginners come here to practice and may not be aware of their surroundings. The range entrance is marked with a sign, but the walkway is covered by a jerk eucalyptus bush. :P Safety: If it's your first time here, be sure to take a short moment to read the advisories posted across from the entrance of the range. Targets: The targets here start at 20 meters and the furthest is at 80. For those who want a shorter range, I would recommend going to the Morley Field archery range - where the targets start at 10 yards (the units are differ at every range); and there is almost always a good Samaritan there to look out for your safety. There are 3 target platforms at 20 meters, 3 at 30 meters; and all of them have a hard spot on the center where arrows will not catch due to being worn out. Some of the usual archers here bring their own perforated surface (styrofoam wall insulator from Home Depot FTW) to make sure the arrow catches. The target platform material is made of stacks of carpet secured by wood on top, and on the bottom. Every time I hit the wood, I'm awarded a very audible 'THONK!' ....Upoon which, I have to put my ENTIRE BODY WEIGHT AND SOUL into the effort of pulling it out. Want some arrow tips? Come pull them here! You would deserve it if you can. The usual archers here always have the following: an arrow puller, a screwdriver, and a buddy to help pull the arrow. Trust me, you'll need all three. Good news: a few of the newer platforms are made of closed cell foam which are softer on the arrow. Amenities: There is a permanent recess with two tables to rest from the sun. It gets very hot here during the day. A porta-potty sits just outside the range, and for goodness sake, please don't hop the chain fence.

Very reasonably priced, and the money goes toward maintaining the facilities. Here's what you need to know: * Bring all your own archery gear. * Please be relatively experienced. Know what you're doing, or at least make sure someone in your group does. They should take responsibility for everyone and manage the sight-lines with others shooting around you. * Hours are sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year * Park in the Alcazar Garden Parking Lot in Balboa Park. As of the time of the writing of this review, this location doesn't exist on Apple Maps. It does exist on Google Maps. I've tried to make the location on this Yelp listing as accurate as possible as well, to avoid confusion. * Dont leave anything behind! Leave everything cleaner than how you found it. If you do see any junk on the trail, pick it up and help keep the place clean. * Be extra aware of your surroundings! This is very different from "similar" archery ranges in Northern California I am used to in the sense that everything is packed pretty close together. There are some targets that are relatively close to others that are facing each other. It's not impossible that an arrow could come in your direction, so just be aware of what's going on around you. * Targets 1-14 have been closed for some time. You have to hike through the range, under the bridge, and across to the other side to find the "start", which is Target 15. * Target numbers are not clearly marked, nor is the path. Highly recommend you photograph the trail map posted at the entrance! * It gets insanely hot in the summer. Plan to go early (start 6-7) to beat the heat and the crowds. Have fun out there!!

My friends and I attended one of their public events at Hollandia park in San Marcos. It was $25…read moreeach for as many 5-min games we wanted to play in a 1-hr period (which is plenty cause it's actually pretty tiring, especially if it's hot out). All the equipment is included except for the armguards, which they rent out for $2 each. Everyone on staff was super friendly. They teach you the basics on how to shoot, the rules of the game, and some safety tips. The masks are easy to see through but they do get pretty hot after you start running around. The game itself is awesome and super fun, kinda like dodgeball but with bows and arrows (but without the bruises you can get from paintballing haha). One hour nonstop playing was definitely enough. I guess with bigger groups they rotate people in and out for the 5-min games, which would've been nice cause it's pretty exhausting, but no one else showed up so we basically had a private archery tag party! Anyways, I would definitely recommend archery tag for any parties, events or team building activities you have coming up. Or go to one of their public events if you just want a fun weekend activity. :)
