I politely declined and continued to look around. The same question was then repeated a new employee. I, again, politely declined and continued to look around once more. This same routine happened numerous times before I realized they must think we had been doing something wrong. One employee even went as far to follow us across the entire store. Overall, it was humiliating and I do not suggest going there unless you like being treated like a criminal the entire time. (I did end up buying things at the end so it was pretty irrelevant being treated the way we did.)

Initially, my family discovered The Soap Factory from a freebie coupon in The Daily News that was designed to attract people to local businesses. My Mom tried the soap, she was hooked, I tried it, I was hooked, and then my Dad tried it too. His only request was for a less "girly" scented soap. Which we got him. We all have our favorite scents-- Mom's is Sweet Baby Angel, a light, baby powdery fragrance, mine are mostly herbal scented, lavender and rose, and Dad's are fragrances like Kentucky Bluegrass, which is reminiscent of Irish Spring soap. When I walked in the other day, I was greeted by an employee with bright pink hair who offered me a shopping bag. I politely declined and started walking into the store to browse. Instead of letting me shop, she continued talking to me while following me around the store. I tried several times to politely disengage by continuing to browse, but she kept following me and speaking very loudly. The interaction quickly went from friendly to overwhelming. I understand greeting customers and offering assistance, but this employee seemed unable to recognize that I wanted to shop on my own. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable and like I couldn't simply browse in peace. By the end of it, I just wanted to leave and come back another day. I've never experienced anything like this at this location before, which is disappointing because I genuinely enjoy shopping here. I hope this employee receives some coaching on reading customers' body language and recognizing when someone is politely trying to end a conversation. Great customer service isn't just about being outgoing... it's also about knowing when to step back and give customers the space to enjoy their shopping experience.
