Off the beaten track in the Isle of Purbeck, this tea room has now expanded to hot lunches and dinners too. A recent Sunday lunch did roast lamb or chicken with all the trimmings, including seven - count 'em - vegetables. This is hearty rural fare for farmers and walkers!I couldn't face such a mountain of food, and plumped for smoked haddock with crushed potato and wilted spinach, in a delicious creamy sauce. This showed the touch of someone in the kitchen who knew what they were doing, and was able to do more than traditional home cooking, welcome as that is. Dessert was an unusual take on a crumble. Warm and cosy environment, and despite being winter they were full. With a bottle of Dorset wine, and coffees, the three course meal for four came to £107 - very reasonable. This is a gem of a place. And there is ample hill and coastal Dorset countryside around for you to walk off the excess afterwards, or to work up an appetite beforehand. Go before they get too popular. read more
