The service was spot on - impeccable but not in the least fussy. My personal highlight was the breakfasts which were incredible and served until noon - a very healthy time for those on holiday! The home made Victoria Sponge was a huge hit with my partner and the scones for the cream tea were delightful. Such good value - you won't find anything better in Weymouth or in many other places for that matter! I particularly loved the tea itself which was endless and delicious and in marked contrast to other places we visited. Trust a Frenchman to totally outdo the English on the perfect English Tea! Marvelous!

We ordered cheese toasted sandwiches and hot chocolates and mulled wine. Prices were reasonable and the sandwiches were very nice. The couple and their business are fairly new to Weymouth, but doing plenty to make their enterprise inviting to passing customers such as us. For a start, Cafe Vie D'Amour occupies a commanding corner position on the seafront, in a handsome and characterful Georgian building. The interior has a mixture of stripped back wood, cosy second dining area, twinkly lights here and there, with decor in warm cream and brown tones. Cafe Vie D'Amour is by day a cafe serving sandwiches, coffees, cake and scones plus more substantial lunches, but by evening it also functions as a bistro. The literature placed on tables promised various theme nights, and the proprietors were also trying out slots with muscians. We only stopped by for a coffee and cake break (yum), so cannot speak for the other food. However, if you are the kind of person who would rather have service with a smile, a bit of friendly chatter and, most importantly, support a local business as opposed to a faceless 'anytown' chain, then this will be the place for you!

We were looking for somewhere interesting and calorific pre hike around the new forest and this little place fit the bill. My partner had clotted cream and scones while I had a cheese and ham omelette. The omelette had good large chunks of ham and generous helpings of cheese while the scones/clotted cream were nice and traditional. The value was also pretty good though overall the food was not out of the ordinary. There are plenty of other options in the town though the willow tree provides good service and great value food whilst also being quiet. The service was fast and the servers friendly perfect for a pre hike feast! A solid three stars, bordering on four.

We visited because we'd seen a nice-looking ad in a "Visit the New Forest"-type brochure. But we were deeply disappointed. The decor is gloomy, and the massive teddy bear in the window was probably cute when originally bought but is now just a bit mangy. There's a weird system of attracting the attention of waiting staff by hanging a small wooden teddy on a pole on your table - an explanatory note on the door gives instructions, but there's no real reason for it and if anything it makes the staff less attentive. They don't make eye contact with customers easily. We had some sympathy for them though - they are dolled up in an almost 'Allo 'Allo-style get-up with silly headdresses and aprons. Some explanation may be found in the personality of the manager, who at one point burst out of the kitchen, patronised a teenage boy who had come through to ask whether his family's ice creams were on the way, and didn't wait for an answer to his question "is anybody waiting?" (which we were). He seemed more interested in talking loudly and ignorantly about hospitality than actually doing any, and certainly didn't create a good impression for customers or role model for his staff. When our order arrived, we were still unimpressed. A banana milkshake was mainly warm froth; the cafe latte was metallic and tasted suspiciously like Kenco; the treacle tart was doughy and unappealing and the carrot cake appeared to have had a bite taken out of it before it got to us. So much for an afternoon tea. Anyway, the details are mostly by-the-by. The upshot is that Brockenhurst is a beautiful little town, so don't ruin it with a visit to this shabby, poorly-run, unimaginative and slightly creepy little disappointment.
