Saw Mogwai here. Live in Austin and they played a 2-3k capacity venue for more money. Saw them here with two friends and scored a side stage table next to the soundboard. I did not know they had a happy hour during the week until a few months ago. They had a band there that night that was amazing and ended up following the band to another venue the next week. I do wish they had more of a cocktail list.... I asked for a Manhattan and they said they did not have the items to make it(I am guessing the sweet vermouth) and so I had the old fashioned ( very good). Its a cool place to go as a venue but also for happy hour during the week. read more

Every show I've been to here has felt special and uniquely intimate. There's this sense of community you get from being in the audience here that you really won't find many other places -- and the musicians are almost always more willing, and even excited, to be a part of the Workplay community on nights that they perform.. it's really a pretty awesome thing. A big plus for me too is that ticket prices here are always reasonable, which you won't find easily anywhere else. And Birmingham, if you haven't been to a show here before, there are a lot of really good opportunities coming up! Awesome venue. Great acoustics. Small intimate setting. If you really love the artist playing and want a great seat without the hassle of arriving way early call ahead and reserve a table. 50 bucks for a two seat table. 100 for a four seat. You will not be disappointed. It allows you to relax and enjoy the show with an unobstructed view. Server will bring you your drinks and if you have to make a bathroom break your seat will be there when you get back. Also arrive whenever you want. The venue is pretty and intimate. They have wonderful musicians come through on a regular basis and it can easily be a chill show or a decent sized concert. The drink menu is kind of small though. read more

This place is great! Besides being one of the driving forces behind the revival of the Birmingham music and radio scene, it is also a great place to catch a show. This 2-in-1 venue offers a sound stage and a theatre-for large, loud shows, and smaller, more intimate shows respectively. They have a full service bar and there is not a bad seat in the house. Enjoy the shows at Workplay. We go When Black Jacket Symphony plays and have always enjoyed the place. You should wear your good jeans and look spiffy when you go here. The drinks are good. Service is okay. The bar can get busy, but they have plenty staff, so it is okay. We will be back. read more

One of the best venues in town. You can see a small intimate show like Tift Merrit in the theater or a mega rock show like Jack White on the Soundstage. It is the perfect venue for all genres of music. read more

Just went for one night and only got to go into the bar area. The show for the small venue was cancelled that night but the local female singer/guitar player ( Jessica "Jess "Meuse ) at the bar was wonderful. Rolled in from atlanta and met a very sweet woman named Robin who offered us free pizza from Rocky's and got me a free sample from the bartender of the local Ipa from "good people" which was wonderful. She told us about the Earthfest Festival at the "Avondale Brewing Company" that we went to on Sunday and had a blast!!! Robin also introduced us to the 2 super nice owners/brothers ( Tom and C. Clark Williams ) of Workplay. They actually gave us a private tour of the whole place even though the bar area was the only area open that night. The small venue space is amazing!!! I can't wait to go back and see a show here!!! Don't miss an opportunity to check out Workplay and hopefully see a show! This place is truly amazing. You might even run into Robin sitting at the bar. Saw Band of Heathens in September and LOVED the venue. Tommy Williams (owner) was a great host to us. We had never been to the venue and talked to him in the bar. Tyler at the bar was great and so was Jo Jo who took our tickets. We had a table for the 4 of us (thank you!) & then midway stood up front. There was happy hour in the bar which was awesome. This venue is beautiful and perfect for small, intimate shows. I love that they actually have the option for seating at general admission shows, even though I stood the whole time, and there's a bar. The sound system was perfect, which can sometimes be a huge issue in a venue so small. read more

Unorganized waited two hours for the show to start and my least favorite thing being told that seating is first come first served but upon arriving was told that either I can stand or pay $100 to sit at the seating on the bottom floor or $50 for the upstairs area. To me that is something that should be known ahead of time and came off as deceitful. read more

I called Workplay several times trying to get in touch with an event planner for my upcoming wedding. I wasnt able to get anyone on the phone after repeated attempts, so I emailed and finally got a response. i set up an appt to meet with the planner. This was important because i was flying in from California and would only be in town a few days to plan my wedding. The day my flight touched down, I got a call from Workplay stating the planner was sick and wouldn't be able to meet with me the next day. So, the day and a half before I got ready to leave I made one last ditch effort to view this venue. I stopped by and was rudely informed by the secretary that I couldn't see the planner without an appointment while looking me up and down like I was a homeless person coming in off the street. She refused to allow me to take a quick peak into the venue. Needless to say, I took my wedding, reception, and 325 guests to the civic center. read more

We were passing through Birmingham en route Destin on May 4th and went to WorkPlay theatre to see The Band Perry while overnighting. First the venue is great and you are close to the artists no matter what your location. The staff is great and the price, while not inexpensive, is certainly within what we would expect to pay for a venue of this sort. Second, the Band Perry was not great. They have changed their music style and sounded like a cover band of the Band Perry instead of the originals. Their electronic versions of their own songs were the hits of the night and the rest was a little terrible in all four of what we think are open minded opinions. Third, our car was broken into and suitcases stolen while the concert was going on. We were parked under a street light, at the intersection, about 200 ft from the front door and someone busted our front passenger window, tried to steal the stereo, and did steal an IPAD, and our trip suitcases, leaving us without even a toothbrush. The staff was great at assisting us, but we learned this is not uncommon. Make sure you park in their designated parking lot and not on the street. And to the Band Perry - What are you thinking? Wonderfully intimate venue for live music. I've seen only a couple of shows here but each time I've really enjoyed the experience. It's impressive the talent that goes through this place as you might not expect Birmingham to garner such top notch artists. read more

Went to see the Rebelution show at WorkPlay. Loved the place. As you walk in there is a bar to the right and a smaller music venue. Our venue was at the large stage down the hall. (both venues share central bathrooms) They had 2 bar areas and an outdoor smoking area in the L shaped hall. The stage is high so everyone can see. (no seating) The sound was fantastic. Probably the nicest crowd I've ever encountered. Atlanta crowds can be rude and pushy. Plenty of free parking around the venue and it felt safe as well. Looking forward to another trip over to BHam to enjoy another show there. read more
