Also, from their ONE session solely on how to control your balance, helped with an obstacle I had today at a race. I was able to walk across a beam without falling into the water. Honestly, their training works and I hope to learn more before my next race in August. Even though it doesn't look like much when you go inside, it's more than enough to get you by in the races. If anything, they do have OPEN gym days, where you can just come and goof off, but sign the waiver online before coming on in!

Half of the gym is set up for kids with smaller scale obstacles, the other half is larger scale intended for adults. However, both kids & adults are free to attempt any obstacle in either area. No lines, no "order" - just pick an obstacle & try it. Don't feel self conscious, because nobody cares if you fail & they sometimes cheer if you succeed! I have taken my 8 year old on 3 occasions now, and on the last trip decided to try some myself. Conquered the jumping spider wall, floating logs, bungee run & 8 ft warped wall. Anyone over 35 is not allowed to attempt the 12 or 14 foot warped walls; there have been a couple Achilles injuries. They offer memberships, classes, and drop in rates. Individuals are required to pay an annual $25 insurance fee; on your first visit this is all you have to pay. Bottom line, this place is FUN. And every ninja needs to practice :)

My experience with Worcester Common Fitness has been extremely disappointing and ultimately led to…read moremy membership being terminated after I attempted to address an issue. One of the biggest problems is the lack of professionalism from staff. On multiple occasions, employees have been on their phones instead of assisting customers and appeared unprepared to handle basic questions about services. When I approached staff for help, the responses were not customer-friendly and often came across as irritated or dismissive. The initial dispute stemmed from the fact that the employee I interacted with did not appear to be properly trained to handle the request I brought forward--despite the fact that other staff members I've dealt with previously were able to assist with the exact same issue without any problem. In contrast, this situation was made unnecessarily difficult. Part of the issue involved my 16-year-old guest. Rob and another staff member claimed that my guest was required to have his own credit card on file, rather than being processed as a guest under my account. This directly contradicts how other staff members have handled the same situation for me over the past month, where they were able to provide quick and straightforward solutions without any issue. This inconsistency points to a lack of proper training and internal communication. During my most recent visit, I went in with the intention of resolving the issue calmly. Instead, the interaction escalated. The staff member involved was not easy-going or understanding, and the situation quickly became unproductive. What was more concerning was how the situation was handled by the general manager, Rob. Rather than acting as a neutral party, he was, in my experience, combative and condescending. He made accusatory statements toward me before backtracking and then asking questions, which gave the impression that he approached the situation from an aggressive stance rather than trying to understand it objectively. He repeatedly tried to control what I could say and how I could say it, insisted that I answer his questions in a specific way, and criticized me when I did not respond as he expected. Rob also accused me of violating company policy, despite the fact that I had been following the same process for bringing in my guest over the past month without any issue. This policy concern was never raised previously, which made it feel selectively enforced and introduced only during this dispute. Today he also tacked on another supposed company policy violation that I have witnessed others commit on the daily basis. He claimed that it is against company policy to bring in a guest and train that guest, but from what I observe on the daily basis, there are groups of people who are not members, coming in as guests to be trained by a member of the gym who are not gym employees. And this is very common and prevalent, so I am confused as to why this policy is now suddenly only applying to me. On top of that, I never once verified or claimed that I am training anyone, they have not verified it, but he made the accusation before trying to backtrack the accusation to ask me if I am training anyone... just overall very biased and confrontational. At no point did I feel like I was being treated as an equal customer or that my perspective was being fairly considered. Instead, the situation felt one-sided, and the decision to terminate my membership appeared to support an employee who was not equipped to properly handle the situation. As a result, my membership was terminated without what I believe was a balanced or professional review of the circumstances. Overall, I would not recommend this gym to others who expect to be treated with basic respect, consistency, and professionalism. Customers should feel heard and respected, not dismissed or talked down to. I hope management takes a serious look at staff training, consistency in policy enforcement, and how conflicts with customers are handled moving forward.

Over the…read moreholidays, I was back in Massachusetts visiting the family and decided to make a trip over to Crossfit Centermass. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Crossfit - it's a mix of power lifting, olympic lifting, gymnastics, and sports conditioning. You workout in small classes (2-10 people) and the workouts are constantly varied. Typically, the other gyms will charge me a drop in fee, but the guys at Crossfit Centermass let me drop in for free because I belong to a Crossfit in Austin, TX. Much appreciated! I went during the open gym time at noon, so I'm assuming my experience is a little different then other times. During the open gym time they will do a WOD (workout of the day), but you do not need to participate if you do not want to. I opted to join in on the WOD - considering I hadn't worked out in a few weeks, it was brutal, but they always are. The gym seemed to be very well equipped. I really liked their setup for pullups. If I was going to make one constructive critique, it would be that their jump ropes sucked. But otherwise this seemed to be a fantastic box (gym) with a lot of friendly people working out. I'm not sure what the situation is with parking, but I found parking directly in front of the gym on Shrewsbury Street. Definitely give 'em a shot if you are looking for a Crossfit gym (or even if you're not)!

I cannot imagine who would find this "gym" appealing except a high school boy looking to buy steroids, although there was one woman who seemed to be the one selling them. Ladies, do you enjoy being ogled by sickly-complected 17-year olds who run 0.3 miles on the treadmill at an all-out pace in a hoodie, WITH the hood up? How about a 23-year old bro wearing seven pounds of hair gel and a tanktop comprised of four strings? Then by God it's your lucky day, as the exclusive demographics of this joint appear to be Really Weird Dudes. Further observations: The music is bad (not normal-bad, you-have-to-try bad), and it is deafening. Blaring Queen on my noise-cancelling headphones failed to drown it out. The lighting is...red. The locker rooms are small and dirty. The ambiance screams Ringworm. The temperature is hardly cooler than the outside (it's called a dehumidifier, friends). On the treadmill I used, half the buttons were straight-up broken and the belt was loose, and it crapped out after 30 minutes. I did not stay to use the weight machines, which were crammed together like tinned sardines, as the urge to escape became, well, inescapable. In summary: I'm genuinely impressed that I managed to move this close to The Worst Gym in the World. Like, what are the chances. I come here mainly on weekends, when my home Y closes way the heck too early (4pm vs 7pm here)…read more I'd say that about 70-80% of their equipment is fine. Lots of free weights and strength machines. The highlight is the huge, high-ceilinged (30-40ft?) functional fitness space that features a turf area, a sled, kettlebells, plyo boxes, plyo smash balls, a do-it-all calisthenics multi-station that includes weighted pulleys, dip and pullup and monkey bars, a free hanging real boxing bag (nice angled uppercut bag that's just the right weight to make you "dance" to avoid the swing back, yet forgiving enough that you can punch it without gloves without risking a broken wrist or bruised knuckles), a pair of Assault bikes and treadmills, a Concept rower, some meh Schwinn stationary bikes (more on that later), and two full squat cages with plenty of plates and barbells. So, what about the other 20-30%, you ask? Well, their cardio machines range from so-so to unusably lousy. All the treadmills are Precor, which are a clear step down from the Life Fitness TMs most Ys have: smaller uglier fuzzy screens with spotty internet connection that can freeze up in the middle of a workout, noisier and less stable platform. The stationary bikes are a mix of Precor (typical mediocre gym bike with crap ergonomics where you feel like you're on a creaky toy bike pedaling against some barbaric pad not magnetic resistance) and Espresso (video-gaming type bike clearly designed to seduce ADD teenagers or lazy af adults) and the horrible Schwinn bikes (just as bad as most home exercise bikes, you can understand why people mostly use them as clothes hangers). Please please please can you guys get at least a few KEISER bikes? We know you can have decent taste in cardio machines because you kept your CONCEPT rowers instead of choosing some oversized gym-brand rowers which look impressive but have similarly lousy ergonomics. Oh and they have non-mechanical Assault brand treadmills which nobody uses because they are brutal on the knees, too narrow and unstable. I don't know who was in charge of choosing the cardio equipment, but that person needs to be put to work cleaning the bathrooms or something more appropriate! The other major gripe I have is their sauna --- it's spacious and new and pretty, but who in the hell decided to have only ONE row of seating? Completely idiotic, folks: did you not pass seventh grade Life Science, where they teach you that heat RISES, and that's why all real saunas have TWO levels of seating, with the 2nd one being a good 4-5 feet off the ground so that you get the full benefit of the heat in the room? Here you have to STAND on the damned low benches if you want to get a decent sweat in ... the sauna thermometer reads 170F but if you're sitting down you'd be lucky to get 140-150F, which is useless. (The sauna of the Melrose YMCA has the same idiotic mistake.) So, while I'm grateful that this Y offers me decent hours to work out on weekends making the long drive out there worthwhile, their cardio machines selection and sauna design really really need a rethink.

The prices are a little steep but when it comes to gymnastic you kind of already have to assume that you are going to be paying a good amount of money. There is ample seating to sit and watch the children during class (whether they are in the large gym (next to the office) or in the back gym (the smaller gym that you can see from the cafe)). The parking lot is in two sections (the lower lot as you come in off the street and the upper lot) and is large enough for all the vehicles. Class sizes are small to medium. Classes seem to accommodate all age and skill levels. The instructors are all kind and patient with the kids who seem to range 1.5 to 18 years.

They are fantastic and caring, and it is a testament to the staff when the last day a child has camp, they hug the counselors and some of the kids get teary-eyed because they loved camp so much. I do not recommend anyone sending their children to this school. The school might look amazing when you walk in, the building looks new and the classrooms are nice, but beware sending your children here as you will regret it. This school went from an owner, teachers and a director that genuinely loved and cared for the kids to a building filled with people that could care less about you, your children and their development. Also, when voicing your concerns I suggest you put it all in writing. If you voice concerns they try to retaliate against you by making up stories about you and your family. The school will go as low as feeding your children negative thoughts about you! Also, keep a close eye on your bill! When you pay it, ensure they charged you correctly. They now have a nasty habit of overcharging you without you noticing and claiming it is correct. Let's not even mention charging your account without consent! Before I used to recommend this school to anyone and everyone, but now that they have new owners, management and teachers I would say steer clear for you and your children's sake. If you want to take a chance with this place it up to you, but remember when things are placed in small child's mind it can be detrimental.
