She went BALLISTIC and ranted at us for 10 minutes! Clearly INSANE. The other female waitress with the short, short shorts was so sweet and nice. It has changed since we had been by before, but never gone in, and was now open under new management, name and only just it's 4th day. To celebrate the opening they had decorated the entry with floral arrangements which was a nice touch. Once in the restaurant , one will notice a quite sizable tank for lobster etc, a very clean and tidy interior, a few other ornaments like vases and the unusual one of a grandfather clock....I have never seen one of them before in a chinese restaurant. Something different .....a little strange but for me did not ruin the interior outlook at all. Service was good, with greeting on entering and quickly presented with menu at table. We ordered the Taiwanese soy sauce chicken ( 三杯鸡 ) and the Hong Kong style fried fish ( 避风塘炒鱼 ) . Soup of the day is bought to the table when you first sit down. That's nothing flash, soup with veges and meat bone . Is common to give such soups to patrons in cantonese restaurants. Our food came out , was up to scratch...so much so that we nearly never had to takeaway the left overs. The price is a little high though. But still worth the expense. Chances we would come back

It was only after reading a recent review by Cheap Eats that I remembered how much I used to love it. I had a re-read of the review I wrote back in 2013, "After driving past Royal City Dumpling many times I finally tried last week and I am very glad I did, it will now be my go to restaurant in Auckland for dumplings as they were truly delicious. Their pork and fennel dumplings were particularly amazing. I look forward to going back to try the noodles which also looked great. The owners are friendly and prices very reasonable." Their menu has changed since then. They now have a yum char menu as well as a full dumpling menu and full sized Chinese menu. I have since been back twice in one week which is always a good sign. The first time was to try their yum char menu for dinner. We were excited by all the options and low prices but knew we couldn't order everything this time. We went with the Steamed Coriander and Shrimp Dumplings ($5.30), Deep Fried Squid ($6.50), Deep Fried Spring Rolls ($6.50) and the Stir-fried Chinese Veges ($11.80). This was more than enough for two people. The squid was extremely large for $6.50 and while it was delicious we really needed another 1 or 2 people to help us finish it. The spring rolls were probably my favourite. They were FULL of shrimp and were crispy and delicious. But everything was good. I then went back to get some takeaway dumplings for dinner. Pork and Fennel pan-fried. As Royal Dumpling is across the road from Pak n Save I thought I would pop over while the dumplings were being made. I may have left them for too long as when I got them home they were a bit chewy, luke warm and not that great. This was entirely my fault, I just want to warn people so they are not tempted to do the same. I was a sad dumpling eater that night.

My partner and I both had a full meal each as well as a side of pan fried dumplings and I had a hot oolong tea. We were stuffed to the max (and we both like to eat) for $35. And at the end of it we both agreed we didn't need the dumplings (however we always order 1-2 entrées anyway). This place is VERY good value in my opinion. I had the three sauce chicken with noodles ($9.5 I think?) which was huge. The chicken came on a small hot skillet sizzling in soy sauce and oyster sauce with ginger and other herbs, and the noodles appeared to be the hand-pulled noodles in a soup with herbs. The fresh coriander in the soup merrier well with the three sauce chicken and totally it the spot. It was VERY Delicious. My partner had the chicken katsu on rice which came with 3 different sides of vegetables as well as a small cup of soup. Both of our meals came with a slice of orange, which surprisingly was a cool and refreshing palate cleanser after all the salty and spicy (I always add hot chilli, but of course after tasting the dish first) flavours from the dish. Word of the wise - if you like bubble tea and order any of the teas off the menu it will be very sweet (unless you have a major sweet tooth, then perhaps this is right up your alley!). You can always ask for no sweetening or half sugar like at other bubble tea places. Also if you don't finish it ask for take-away and they will happily seal it in a cup for you. Weird and wonderful - Taiwanese Meat Ball. I had this the first time I went to My Kitchen a while back now. This is for the adventurous only - it is not your standard Italian meat ball. I've been to Taiwan and I'd say they are pretty authentic. Come see for yourself though!

We saw signs for 'Yum Cha' (meaning 'drink tea' in Cantonese) throughout the cities in Australia and New Zealand, and quickly understood it was similar to getting 'Dim Sum' in the States. Once we were seated, we were given laminated menus and a dry erase marker...we got the message. One thing similar is the no nonsense service provided at Chinese restaurants (good and bad)...it's the food you come for. So my brother and I ended up ordering a variety of things, and everyone of them was good. Steamed Prawn dumplings (NZ$10.90) - basically har gow, coming in fours. it was as good as I've had, using expertly seasoned whole shrimp. Roast Pork (NZ$23) - roasted pork belly, reminding me of Filipino Pork Lechon, even coming with a similar dipping sauce. Very expertly done and delicious. Deep Fried Large Prawns (NZ$27) - looking exactly like the menu picture, these whole head-on shrimp and been battered and deep fried. Meant to be eaten whole shell and all. It was good quality shrimp, firm and sweet. Shrimp Fried Rice (NZ$23) - a good rendition of fried rice, with small salad shrimp. Steamed Mixed Dumplings (NZ$21) - this could be a good sampler with one of each for the most popular eight steamed dumplings. As always, I much prefer the savory versions vs the sweet custardy ones, but have to admit the steam creamy custard buns were very cute to look at. Steamed Shrimp and Scallop with XO sauce (NZ$13.90) - I liked the sauce on top, but couldn't really tell if there were scallops in there or not. I preferred their har gow. As one can see, the dim sum runs on the pricier side as expected being in a tourist area. They really cater to a Chinese clientele, with big families enjoying their dim sum while enjoying the nice outdoor weather.

So i take the milder route..Especially more so after having been to another newly opened Cantonese style place along the same road the week before this was an even bigger let down. It is obviously aimed more at the dessert menu but does also have a decent selection of meat and vege dishes. The place is has a clean appearance as it should have when newly opened but if you looked toward the rear past the counter was a mess. Finding a table was hard and ordering with the lady seemed to be a major mission. Ill trained staff?? And we were speaking the same lingo!! It was that bad that at one point there was a LOT of people coming in and getting annoyed that some got too fed up to wait and walked out, one throwing the menu at a table before storming out. Beyond the counter the tabletop where the desserts were prepared it was a mess, a jumble of containers etc. Two big pots of dessert sat on chairs by the counter.....not the best look.We ordered a pork dish and chicken which both tasted very good , so thumbs up to the chef. We had a free dessert , which came free if you added the restaurant on your WeChat app. I think that is just an opening offer. The price is pretty good and they do actually have a pretty decent courtyard area out back which you can sit in if the table are free. Overall the food is good, which is a plus. But the service and state of the place is a mess. They really need to get a decent system in order when it comes to service side of things. And clean the whole counter area and surrounds up.Until we try again and see if it has changed nay i will give it a lowly rating and that is just for the food alone!!
