I have been using this shop for cars since I moved to IB in 2009. Chris and Tom and many more through the years have always been helpful, fair, and provided great repairs. I honestly dont know what I would do without them here! Today I had a a car problem and managed to limp the car there from the strand and they got me fixed up same day. I've always been skeptical about local shops because they've been predatory in my experience. Woody's is NOT like this!! Their customer service is legit! I was concerned about an engine sound so I took it in and talked to the Owner (Chris) . He could have EASILY charged me an hour labor just to listen and give his opinion, but he didn't. He listened gave his professional opinion and didn't charge. Because of the awesome customer service, I took it back to get my transfer case and differential fluid serviced. Both time I was in by the morning and out by the afternoon. No issues. I'm REAL critical of how I spend my money and would go back in a heartbeat. Quick turn around. Reasonable. Trustworthy. Dependable. Friendly staff. Took an old ford fusion in and it turned out to have a transmission issue. They referred me to Sotos Transmission down the street and didn't charge for the assessment. Sotos was also great for transmission issues just super busy so be patient. Sotos fixed the transmission issue but had to go back to Woody's to replace my O2 sensor. I got a next day appt at 9am and the car was ready for pick up by 1pm. I did pay $90 or so for the diagnostic but I didn't ask for it be waived because they waived it the first time I took the car in to get looked at. Thank you for the great service! read more

This auto shop is really unprofessional and rude. I've gone in a couple times trying to get them to look at my car because it's the one in the area. Every time I've gone in they always say they cannot help me that I would have to schedule an appointment and then when I schedule they say oh we can't work on your car because it's a low car. My car is a stock Honda it come low from factory. They look at me and only go off age. They see a young kid with a nice car with rims and immediately go no we can't help cuz your car not stock. Like they say it's "Auto Care" but clearly don't car for the auto trend going around with everyone doing stuff to the cars. If you wanna bring your dad's old piece of shit truck bring it I bet they still won't help you. read more

The reason I brought my vehicle to Woody's was pure proximity. My alternator was making noises and due to previous experience, I suspected it was bad. My request was to test the alternator and confirm it is was working. The diagnosis ($83) was a bolt was loose and that the alternator is good and working properly. They ordered a bolt, put it in ($90) and a new noise and smell was noticed upon pick up. I drove it a bit, yet it seemed off. The winding noise I was hearing is one sign of a bad alternator. I was told it's fine and sent on my way. After one day of driving less than 20 miles, I stopped at an Auto Zone to have the battery checked due to the light coming on. It was confirmed that the alternator was bad. I spoke with Woody's this morning and asked them how they could help me. It seems that an alternator can be good one day and bad the next?? Did they really test the alternator? An improvement in transparency and educating the customer is recommended. Also, when a part is changed out isn't it protocol to give the customer the old one? At the very least, be willing to install a new alternator at no cost. I was told I would again have to pay for the installation. It would be nice to talk with the mechanic that tested the alternator and put in the new bolt. Customer care could definitely be enhanced. At this point in time, I struggle with any positives...oh, they wear uniforms. Nice touch. read more

I took my car in 2000 miles ago and they said I needed a valve gasket which I knew I needed. They said I needed an O-ring and an axle in the front. I had them do the work because I wanted to give my money to a local business and it cost me over $850. I started hearing noises in the front left side, the side they said that needed work done. I had an honest mechanic look at it & he checked the oil and it was bone dry. There's oil all around the distributor where they replace the O-ring and oil around the valve gasket. Chris acted like it's normal to go through that much oil in the 3 months I drove the 2000 miles. Chris put dye in the oil to see where the leak is coming out. Told me to drive it over the weekend, which I did and brought it in Monday morning and the guy knew nothing about me coming back and the problem I had. I was told he won't be back for three days he was out snowboarding. I know it's something that you would look at under a black light. I asked him to take a picture/video to show me where the leak is. I never received a call all day regarding my problem. I finally called them 15 minutes before they were to close and he said that my distributor is leaking & it's a motor mount that's making the noise when l drive it. I went to pick it up the next day & when I walked up to the desk the phone rang & he answered it but didn't put them on hold. What kind of customer service is that? You should put the call on hold if a customer is standing in front of you who's car is there with a problem. I was there first. Rude!! Lost my business because of that & their lack of communication (It could at least be put in the notes on my records if they can't talk to each other) I was standing there for quite awhile & another guy was in the shop doing nothing. I finally asked him to give me my key. I'm very disappointed with the guy who is covering for Chris and that they didn't care about my business enough to communicate with each other nor me. UPDATE: see pics. They charged 2x the amount for a valve gasket kit (no part # on invoice), didn't put all the parts on obviously. They charge twice the amount of time they are supposed to charge to replace the Oring too!! read more

I cannot tell you how wonderful Woody's is. First of all, they are the first - and perhaps the only - mechanics that I trust implicitly. They ALWAYS help you think through the what "must" be dones vs the "should" be dones, so you can budget. Also, they never inflate their charges or mislead you about what's going on. In truth, as well, sometimes they've told me that nothing is wrong and they've tweaked small things and not charged me at all. I mean...who does that!? Chris is a great guy to talk to, and he'll always offer you a fair price. They do great work and never offer something they can't deliver, and the time-frame for turn around with repairs is always reasonable and --- better yet --- communicated well. Can't say enough about how great the team at Woody's is! I had heard good things but not only did they live up to the great things I had heard, they surpassed. Chris and Tom were both responsive, honest and all around so nice. They easily could have told me things needed to be done to my car, but they were honest and let me know that I still had miles left before I would need new brakes and a tune up. They were even so kind as to replace a bulb and didn't even charge me; I had received quotes of $100 labor to replace the $5 bulb from other auto repair shops. Woody's used to be the best car mechanic in Imperial Beach that I would recommend to all the locals in San Diego to use. When we first arrived, Chris, Tom and the crew would go above and beyond the call of duty and they gained our trust. However, their service has been slipping over this past year, and I unfortunately have to write this review that we no longer trust them as a car mechanic. They started doing the bare minimum, we caught them a few times when they didn't properly inspecting the vehicle and not checking things and lacked communication with the customers. On our past visit, we had previously brought our car to a dealership for a recall and they recommended additional repairs. We called Woody's to get a ballpark price estimate and it was significantly lower than the dealership so we moved forward. When I arrived for first appointment at 8am, Tom mentions the repairs would take 1/2 day and they would be done in the morning, and they would call me right away to confirm the estimate. I get breakfast and a few hours pass by, and I get no phone call, and no update with my vehicle. I walk back to Woody's and I see my car in the same spot on the street from this morning! They never even did an inspection! I walk inside and ask Chris what's going on and he gives me a new estimate which is $200 higher than what we previously discussed on the phone. After further discussion, I still agree to Woody's proceeding to the car repairs, however he says the car won't be done until tomorrow. Really poor communication considering they mentioned it would be done in the morning same day. So now I have take a lyft ride home because I needed to attend to my dogs and work meetings in the afternoon. I send Chris a friendly professional email regarding the price increase and the inconvienence they caused hoping for a resolution. He gives me a call, and tells me that I can pick up my car and bring it to the dealership and he is refusing to give me service. While he has every right to refuse service, I was not being at all a rude customer to not want to work with. Woody's gave me no choice but to call another mechanic in the area to service the vehicle. It was very unprofessional of Chris on how he handeled the situation and I believe its reflective of the way Woody's has been treating customers in the past year. I also noticed that he was arguing with several other customers on the phone while I was in the waiting room, and I felt a very negative tone overall. Its a tough business to be in but a few pointers, to gain customer's trust when you promise something (cost, time, etc), you have to stick with it, and if issues occur that you can't meet your word, you need to communicate that with your customers right away. If Woody's continue down this road, they will lose more customers, and Karma will get them at the end. read more

I have been taking my cars to Woody's for easily over 12 years. By far this is the best auto repair shop I've had the pleasure to do business with. Chris, Tom, and all employees treat you like family. They do fantastic work and stand behind what they do. I recently had a radiator installed, it was leaking (no fault of Woody's) and they replaced it. The associate who installed the new one didn't replace the oil cooler in the proper place and as a result the oil cooler started leaking coolant. Brought it in for the leak and an oil change. After investigation, they discovered why the cooler was leaking and repaired it at no charge. Needless to say that particular associate is no longer employed there. Because of my inconvenience and what happened, they didn't even charge me for the oil change. What other repair shop would do this. Not very many, I assure you. Woody's Auto Repair knows how to treat their customers. They have never mistreated any one that have gone there and I will continue to be a loyal customer. We are so lucky to still have places like Woody's around. We wanted to find a small local IB auto shop to support, and this is our place. It's close to home, and our new auto shop of choice. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly honest! They diagnosed my boyfriends truck and could have added a lot of things to what needed to be done, since we thought the problem was bigger than it was. But instead they gave us a fair and honest quote, that we decided to go with. They had the truck in the shop for a couple days and since we've got it back, it's been running great. I just took my car into woody's because I was having problems with It dyeing at stops. They took it for a run & of course it didn't happen. Instead of playing around with it not knowing why it was stalling Woody's advice was to take it home & C if It continues. There was no charge & no wasting my time. I had gone to another local auto shop when our power steering first went out. They claimed to have fixed the issue, and $200 in labor (they didn't charge us for the "part") later we were on our way. Less than a week later the power steering went out again. So we called them and took it back. Again they claimed to have fixed the issue and let us go no charge, but said if it happened again we'd likely have to replace the entire steering column/rack & pinion, and quoted us over $2k. AGAIN less than a week later, the power steering went out AGAIN. So our car sat.... knowing it wouldn't be driven while hubby was gone on deployment, and that when the end of the year rolled around we'd be getting a new vehicle any way. I kept seeing Woody's and Chris' name come up as highly recommended on all the Imperial Beach happenings/neighborhood watch pages, with others saying they had started at the other local place as well and were met with the same disappointment we were. I decided to take a chance and get a second opinion from Woody's knowing we'd be needing the car again soon. Best decision ever!! I called Chris (the owner) and scheduled a drop off for the next Monday morning to get an estimate and see what their opinions were compared to the other place. About 3 hours later I got a phone call from Chris saying they found the issue and it appears the other place didn't really fix anything at all, rather kept re-welding the same piece, which kept failing. He said they could order a NEW part (vs the whole rack and pinion) and would FIX it for under $700. I followed up asking how long the repair would expect to hold, and he said that it shouldn't fail again any time soon as they were actually FIXING it vs. trying to cover it up. The next day Chris called letting me know the car was up and running and steering smoothly. He also let me know about 2 other up coming issues with other parts. He had estimates for the other 2 repairs when I arrived to pick up the car. Not only were they estimates for the PARTS but also the LABOR so that there were no surprises. He honestly answered my follow up questions, and entertained my 5 year old while I was checking out. So far I've got no reason to give them anything but 5 stars (unlike the other local shop). Chris was nice, broke it all down in language I could understand, didn't sugar coat anything, and actually FIXED the problem in a very timely manner, and cost was more than reasonable. I have been coming to Woodys for about 3 years and I wont take my care to another mechanic! My first time coming here I though my alternator was bad, but it ended up being my battery. My eject button for my CD player was trying to eject a cd when there was nothing there and it drained my battery. After work I received a voicemail explaining all this. It was a 3 day weekend and Chris and Woody let me borrow a battery for the weekend until I could swap mine out at autozone (I just bought it and it was still under warranty). They didn't charge me a dime! I was very impressed with their service. They might not be the cheapest option for everything, but I will pay a few bucks more for a good / honest mechanic any day!
