Crab Rangoon pizza
Shawna H.

This place was great! We really enjoyed our dinner. Appetizers were tasty. We had the ham, swiss, and pickle egg rolls and the pork belly burnt ends. Both were good. We also had the pizza of the month that was the crab Rangoon pizza. The crust is amazing! It's a great yeasty, bouncy, and chewy pizza crust. We were very happy with the service and our meal.

Great addition to Bass Lake! Interior is nicely refreshed, very open compared to when this was Sporty'z. The drawback to this openness, however, is that the restaurant is super loud! Went a few times when the restaurant wasn't even at half capacity, and You could easily hear everyone's conversation. Acoustic tiles/panels on the ceiling might help this. Another minor annoyance- the printed menus. They're very thin and super worn out; they don't make the best first impression when you get seated. Their sister location, Peddler's Pizza in Valpo, has a slightly larger menu. Would love to see some more options carry over, such as a pesto sauce and vegan cheese options for the pizzas. A large downside, in my opinion, is the significant amount of deep-fried food. Yes, I know this is a gastropub/bar/pizza joint, but more fresh-food options would be great, especially if they could be sourced locally. I understand that the shelf life isn't as long, but I'm sure that could be figured out, such as having a rotating weekly special or similar. One last thing- include some more menu variety to appeal to more dietary restrictions! Veggie burgers and cauliflower crust aren't enough! Ultimately, I'm thrilled for another great dining option on Bass Lake, and I'm excited to see The Woodshed improve!

One 16 inch pizza and two 10 inch pizzas

This place is really hit and miss for me. There are times when the food is great, and other times when they just can't seem to get things right. Their bread nuggets are absolutely the best and worth the trip just for those alone! However, with a more recent experience using door dash, I can say I'm beyond disappointed. Our ER doc ordered food for day shift and night shift, and they not only cancelled one of the meals, but we were never notified that the item was cancelled due to being out of stock. So our doctor, unfortunately, did not get the food he ordered. Then to top it off, they messed up the rest of our order. We ordered one 10 inch pizza and two 16 inch pizzas. We got two 10 inch and one 16 inch pizzas. They offered to make us a 14 inch at no charge to make up the difference. However, we used door dash to deliver the food, and the staff said they could not bring us the 14 inch pizza. They also refused to refund any money. So not only were things not right, there is no refund, and we would have to somehow leave a busy ER to pick up a 14 inch pizza. The person on the phone was extremely unpleasant, and argued with my coworker saying that we had not ordered what we ordered. She finally decided to actually take a look at the order, and then verified that we in fact did actually order what was originally stated. Our bill was $137.92. To spend that much for the experience we had is just not acceptableTo sum things up, we will not be ordering any meals from there again.

Unfortunately, that perfect evening didn't just take a turn... it drove straight off a cliff. Seven of us ordered appetizers and full meals, and everything hit the table looking and tasting great--except for one unfortunate burger that was so thoroughly charred it could've doubled as a hockey puck. Our friend tried to power through it (because who wants to complain?), but eventually realized it just wasn't edible. They politely asked if it could be remade or replaced. Simple enough, right? Wrong. About 20 minutes later--after everyone else had finished eating--we weren't met with a replacement, but with what I can only assume was the owner, who approached with an accusatory tone that immediately made the entire table uncomfortable. Instead of resolving the issue quietly, she marched back from the kitchen holding the same burnt burger and presented it like courtroom evidence, as if we were on trial for daring to send it back. At that point, we were all sitting there in disbelief. Was this really happening? Then came the comment: essentially suggesting that next time, we should say something before eating most of it--despite the fact that our group had spent plenty on food and drinks and clearly wasn't angling for a free burger. The implication alone was enough to sour the entire experience. To "fix" things, she offered to comp the burger (which we had already declined) and, as we were leaving, handed over a $20 gift card--as if that could somehow erase the awkwardness, embarrassment, and frankly rude treatment we had just experienced. It couldn't. What should have been a minor kitchen mistake turned into a bizarre and uncomfortable scene, all because of how it was handled. Mistakes happen--burnt burgers happen--but treating paying customers like they're trying to pull one over on you? That's a choice. It's a real shame, because the night had been so enjoyable up until that moment. But after witnessing that level of unprofessional and unpleasant behavior, it's hard to imagine returning. Do better. Seriously.

After dinner we went over to the meat market and picked out a few chubs of hamburger and pork sausage and a chuck roast. The market is easily accessible thu the large dinning room side of their bar/restaurant. The whole place is clean and cozy. The bar side took me back 50 years when I used to go there when it was Louies Tavern for lunch with my Dad and the crew. Then on the menus they have the story of how the owner came from the city and married a dairy farmer and learned how hard it is to be in the dairy farming business. I also milked cows when I was first married too. Milking was twice a day 7 days a week and twice on SUNDAY! Other dairy men will get this play on words. But for the others....most people work 5 maybe 6 days a week BUT Dairy guys work 7 days a week EVERY Sunday TWICE a day. Anyways enough of my reminiscing. We're glad was came across this gem and will return very soon! I almost forgot my wife had their grasshopper cheesecake. MMMMM GOOD.

I had always wanted to go there and am very happy to say that I totally enjoyed the visit. While there, we visited a lot of places and ate most meals out. Ironwood was one of them. Most of you know that I have serious OCD when it comes to craft beer. I like to try new breweries, always rate my suds on Untappd, and rarely drink beers that I have already had, unless there are no other options. So, of course I was going to try the breweries in Valparaiso. This one just happened to be owned by one of my wife's college friends. The brewery is in a nice little building. I'm sure it was probably a home before the remodel. It has ample parking in the back next to a small little patch of woods, probably about the size of a normal backyard. There were birds all over the trees, reminding me that I had made the stupid decision to leave my camera in San Antonio. My eyes immediately fell on the flight boards. They are set up with 9 spaces so that they can easily match the beer to a number, as they had nine choices to choose from. I asked for all nine to be on one, and she let me have them half-filled. I love beer, but never want to feel buzzed, if I plan to drive. In this situation, I just wanted to taste them. I liked all of the beers here. My two favorites were the Triple XXX Belgian Triple and the Cricket IPA. I also really liked Goliath's Demise barleywine. Barleywines in general are not my favorites, usually because they are not fresh. This one was fresh and not cloyingly sweet. My wife, as most of you know, is not a beer drinker- AT ALL. For that reason, we left after I finished the flight and a couple of small glasses of my two favorites. The atmosphere was very cozy. The local patrons who came in were all very friendly. One lady at the bar spoke with us as if we were there with her every day. The owner's husband came in and placed a plate with smoked salmon and crackers on the bar for everyone. And, most notably, there was not a TV in sight! Imagine, a place to cozily sit and converse with fellow beer drinkers without sports blasting in your ears!

I had the pleasure of a couple free pours today, Abolition and British Ugly. Abolition, a robust porter, warmed my heart...so I bought a growler to go. British Ugly, a mild English ale, was nearly as good. If I had the time I would have done it the right way and ordered a flight, but we had other fish to fry. I enjoyed their small/local approach. If you find yourself in this neck of the woods do yourself a solid and pay these fathers a visit. Cheers!
