** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. **…read more I would've never discovered this sliver of a park had it not been for an article I read about the $13 million footbridge that was built to extend the San Pablo Bay Regional Trail over the Amtrak rails above the wetlands and into Pinole Shores (review: https://bit.ly/3mVUVcf). It was completed about three years ago, and by default, the architectural addition made this small natural area a central hub for walkers and bicyclists searching for an uninterrupted stretch along this part of the bay. A small patch of greenery with panoramic bay views, it's a nice respite with plenty of birds in constant motion especially if you stroll along the rocky shore. Don't be put off by the sewage plant or the trains that speed by with frequency. Easy for me to say. It's at the end of Tennent Avenue, a straight chute from the Pinole Valley Road exit off 80. Be forewarned - it's tough going out here when the weather is hot, so make a point of going early before the heat of the day sets in.

It was so nice to walk the trail along the water while trains went by. It's a cute park in a lovely neighborhood. The trail was easy to walk or bike. People were friendly and the weather was perfect. That's why I want to write this review in hopes that as a community we can maintain and even maximize the things we love about this park. The small play area is due for a remodeling. Graffiti throughout, broken structures, broken fencing, and trash. The basketball courts have uneven pavement so I can only imagine what could happen when the older kids or even adults are playing. Even the bathroom, while better than before, some of the items aren't stocked or the fixtures/appliances don't work. Hopefully some things can be repaired soon, but overall the park needs some love poured back into it.

It's also right next to 'Leila by the Bay' restaurant. The playground is designed mostly for younger kids with the floor deck made from recycled rubber materials. It has a couple of toddler swings so definitely not for teenagers. We didn't have these kinds of playgrounds when I was growing up. It has three benches and three picnic tables with lots of grassy area. Depending on the time of day, the surrounding trees will provide some shade. I've taken my friends here during the pandemic just to get away from the pandemic madness while enjoying the outdoors while maintaining social distancing. The city of Hercules also does a good job of maintaining and cleaning this park, and the garbage bin is never full, which is a sign that it's being serviced in a timely manner. Best part of all, you can watch the Amtrak passenger trains and freight trains pass by on their scheduled routes. There's something hypnotizing about a train going by; no matter how many times I've seen it, you can't help but look and enjoy. It's definitely appropriately named Railroad Park.

Seems very family friendly. Halloween is a holiday for the children - don't be a party poopet. Miracle playground - not sure what that means but there was some signs to 'have fun' and to 'play safely.' Adult supervision required - 'the smart way to play.' Hercules seems to be a family friendly place to be. This general area seemed safe and to have mostly single family houses around it.
