I came here a few years ago on a girls trip and have been thinking about the pizza here ever since! Specifically the Nona Mela pizza, which has apple butter, roasted garlic, cheddar, caramelized onions, and blackened chicken. Normally I would never get this type of pizza as I love a red sauce, but this was recommended by one of my friend's friends so we tried it. And I'm so glad we did! This pizza is amazing and the flavours are prefectly balanced. Fast forward to this year, I was on a road trip with my husband and my dog and I just HAD to have this pizza again. We ordered the Nona Mela and the Citta pizza (the Citta has prosciutto and brie), and they were both delicious! The Nona Mela was especially good, and my husband agreed that it was a lot better than what he expected. We couldn't finish the two pizzas between us, so we brought the leftovers home and reheated it two days later. Somehow, the pizza was even better than the day of! We actually ordered an extra Nona Mela to bring home to one of my friends who was on the girls trip a few years ago, as she also has been thinking of this pizza. That's how good it is! It was fairly busy when we went for dinner on a weekday but we didn't have to wait too long to be seated (without a reservation). The back courtyard patio is small but shaded, which is nice given the heat this summer. We ordered a Caesar salad and a Matriciana pizza. The salad was fairly standard. The pizza was good, thin crust, oven-fired. Maybe it was the toppings we chose but I wasn't overly wow'ed. (We opted for something other than my go-to, the Nonna Mela, which I think I would get instead next time I go back.) We also asked for roast garlic (which is a base) to be added to the pizza but you couldn't really taste the difference. Our server was very nice and offered to move us because some water was dripping from above but we declined since it wasn't a big deal. Was on a solo work trip in Kingston and this place was highly recommended by a friend. Got seated at the bar and requested a virgin cocktail. The bartender that night created such a refreshing drink for me that was off menu. It was so kind of him! For my meal I ordered the dynamo pizza which did not disappoint! This had pesto, smoked chicken, feta and tomatoes. It was so flavourful and delicious, I was even debating coming here another night! Noisy, cramped (esp in the interior, front of resto), probably one of the busier places in downtown Kingston with ok pizza. Restaurant doesn't have a flashy sign, so it might be difficult to spot. Aside from pizzas and a handful of salads, there isn't much on the menu. I found the pizzas pretty standard, nothing crazy or out-of-the-norm. Of course, you can build your own! Server said pizzas are "personal sized", but honestly, I think you can share 1 esp if you order drinks &/or a salad. Most of the pizzas are in/around $20 with meat pizzas over $20. Pizzas took quite some time to arrive after ordering. I'd say at least 20mins for thin crusts. I tried 3 pizzas: Campagna, Vegetariana, Alla Patricia, & Marco Polo. The "lemon chicken" on the Marco Polo tasted bland (no lemon) and a bit dried out as though they've been left out in the open. Again, the rest were pretty standard. Pomodoro sauce had a good tang to it! Service was good, polite, water was refilled on a regular basis. Nothing super personable. Wood fired pizza with plenty of tapas and mains for that one person in the group who claims to not like pizza (nobody believes you but we'll pretend for the sake of this review). Surprisingly we found a table quite easily. They have a large pizza menu so I wanted to pick the most interesting pizza they had. We went for the Del Bosco, which had pomodoro sauce, meatball slices, gorgonzola cheese, red onion, and white truffle oil. In addition, we ordered the Maiale e Gnocchi, which was blackened pork tenderloin on potato dumpling pasta with arugula pecan pesto cream and spiced maple glaze. The pizza was made very thin. It's how I like it. The crust was airy and had a slight crisp. I loved the aroma of the truffle oil on the dish. It made it really delicious. The red onions added a bit of sweetness to the dish. I loved the pizza but you get tired of eating it after a few slices. The pork tenderloin was the star of the night. It was a savoury-type dish. You had the arugula sitting at the bottom, and it was topped with pesto cream. They pair this with the pork tenderloin, which, I must say, was cooked to perfection. I'd say that the sweet and creamy cream sauce with the pasta and pork made for a symphony of flavours. You had a sweet and savoury taste and it was just so delicious. Have visited many times over the years and always enjoy the food/experience. The most recent time we visited Woodenheads, we opted for takeout and enjoyed the food. My bestie is preggers with twins and had a serious craving for their lumpia appetizer. And what mama wants, mama gets!! We also ordered a salad and pizza - all very tasty! My fave/go-to menu items are the coconut shrimp and really any of their pizzas - they are delicious and fired in a wood oven. This is the only place that consistently gets mentioned when discussing food options in Kingston. Visited as I was in town helping brother move out from university. Came by for a late weekday lunch (around 1:30 pm) and was able to get a table no problem. Ordered the Nonna Mela pizza while brother got the Margherita. The margherita was nothing special, but that was more because of the more "basic" nature of it having less specialty toppings. The crust and texture of the pizza was still quite good. The apple butter of the nonna mela was what clinched it for me - unique and sweet. Would highly recommend as it goes well with the garlic and onion flavour. It may not be the most photoworthy of the pizzas there (someone asked me if it was curry?) but it is definitely one of the most refreshing combinations I have had. Pizza prices range from $15-25, which is reasonable given the quality of the toppings and crust. Service is friendly and make sure to check on you often for water and opinions on the flavours. I stopped in for a fun meeting with three others. It's a darling independent restaurant that makes personal pan pizza fun. My order wa the Capretto which comes out a little over $11 after tax and tip. Just a heads up for anyone who isn't Kingston local, there is parking nearby but you gotta feed the meter. When you walk in during the lunch hour it's pretty hustle and bustle, just be patient and get a table, put your order THEN chit chat. The servers are great with timing to roll out all the orders at the same time, hot, right side single serve portion. After a couple hours drive, we were ready to re-fuel. We arrived just as they opened at 11AM and helped ourselves to a seat near the window. it was a sunny day and the warm sunshine felt great while it filled the restaurant. The restaurant isn't very big here and it is a popular destination for lunch and dinner. So be prepared to wait and it will be worth it. When you walk in, you will see the big red brick wood-fired pizza stove that cooks all the yummy pizza pies. The menu is divided between white/green and red sauce pizzas. The menu seems quite large yet each pizza combination seems unique and not seemingly a similar repeat of something else. You can start with a traditional margarita pizza or keep reading and it just gets better and better. We eventually settled on ordering the giovane (smoked mozza and pepperoni) and the more unique meraviglioso (lobster curry, brie, and fresh basil). Both turned out to be excellent choices. The giovane was taking the pepperoni pizza and adding another layer of flavour with the smoked mozzarella. It had this light smokey flavour as you chewed and the pepperoni had a great savoury taste. Worked so well and elevated the flavour up a notch. The meravigiloso had a pretty good lobster flavour in the curry sauce. The fresh basil gave it some freshness and colour. The brie was creamy and nicely melted too. The staff are really efficient and friendly. They make sure you have a good time and are treated right here. We had 2 pizzas for take-away, since the dining room was full for our limited dinner availability (they were booked for the rest of the days that we had in town). But, they were very close to our hotel and the pizza was very hot (& tasty) on arrival. Fresh ingrediants, well proportioned cheese, sauce & toppings. Wooden Heads was recommended by a local at The Brier and our only regret is not being able to have a regular meal -- the place looks inviting, although crowded and full of life, not bar noisy where you're incapable of having a conversation. They are equally the top two restaurants in our opinion. With COVID, take-out and pick up are also wonderful options for a stay-home supper. For us, the only possible rival, in terms of taste, is a Caeser Salad from a small, local west-end deli. If I want a Caeser Salad restaurant experience to remember - I head to Woodenheads! Even their water and presentation is great; my best friend, whose apartment water pipes are not good, chooses Woodenheads for his water much of the time. "Look, any fantastic place that can also do *water* like that..." Good seating options: comfortable "hard" chairs, padded benches, and bar stools. Our favourite meals - are the Pollo Saltimbocca and Milanese in Bocca, I believe. The spicy sauce chicken and potato cake dish for him; the non-spicy chicken and potato cake dinner for me. We've tried many appetizers, salads, and mains at Woodenheads, but those two dinners are what we order almost every time! Dessert, oh dessert. While I wish Woodenheads had a chocolate cake like Swiss Chalet does, they more than make up for it with their Strawberry Phyllo Lasagna with Chocolate Mousse, Dark and White Chocolate Pear Calzone, and Apple-Crumble Pizza. Well, if you are going to Kingston from Toronto, don't plan on just spontaneously popping by at Wooden Heads. I called them on Thursday to reserve for Saturday, They could only seat us at 9:00 p.m., and it was the last table. Three of us went to Woodenheads, and I can say that its popularity is indeed deserved. They specialize in Neapolitan style pizza, wood-fired on their imported stove. Well, if you are into Neapolitan pizza, than this is nothing especially new. However, the attentiveness of service, the charm of the surroundings and the creative pizza combinations that they suggested on the menu made this place stand out from some other Neapolitan pizza places. At least, on the evening that I was there, this was true. When we arrived at 9:00 p.m., it was rather noisy. This was just due to one party of rowdy people. What could I expect? Exams at Queen's University were ending, and students were celebrating. I noticed the waitstaff gently encouraging them to settle up and free up their tables, and when they left, the atmosphere improved immensely. Even if they had stayed, I would still have given the pizza a glowing review. Looking at the menu, I was thrilled to see the variety, and the options to sub out one topping for another. Annie, our waiter, was enthusiastic and helpful, especially because I wanted to try an experimental pizza based on one of their suggestions. The pizza Guglielmo is described as: "herb veloute, brie, pear slices, prosciutto, rosemary." I asked Annie what she thought of gorgonzola in the place of brie, and she seemed to find this an intriguing idea. I went with it, and it was AMAZING!! It was so good, in fact, that I matched Annie's enthusiasm when I suggested that they make this a feature on their menu. Then, she mentioned that another customer who had just ordered the exact same bespoke pizza also suggested that they make this a menu item. The only thing that I would have done differently would have been to ask for the crust well done. I like a bold bake, as I've heard it called. Annie said that, of course, they could have done that. My daughter and husband were similarly pleased with their (rather more traditional) selections: Margherita and (appropriately) Tradizione. Check it out if you are in Kingston! We got the last seats at the bar. The bartender was wonderful though so we had a great time with great food and service. Tip #2: Don't judge this book by its cover. Decided to try this restaurant because of all the positive reviews on Yelp. I walked in to the restaurant and asked to do takeout, and was directed to the bar. Luckily there was 1 seat at the bar so I could sit while I waited for my food... as this place as packed! For takeout, you place your order with the bartender. He passed me the menu and I took a look at it. Honestly there were just too many options... but then I came across the "Make your own pizza" so I thought I'd give it a shot. I went with the following toppings: Smoked Mozzarella, tomato sauce on base, banana chili peppers, smoked chicken, Italian sausage, mushrooms. With tax that came to about $25. It took about 10 minutes to make and I took it back to my hotel room (which was just around the corner). Once I got back I opened it up and the first impressions of presentation were disappointing. It didn't look all that great... but then when I took a bite of it... yum! It was tasty, the toppings were good (they could have been a bit more generous though considering the price tag) and it was filling. For the price, the portion was extremely small. It is expensive to build your own pizza, as a comparable pre-picked toppings one will run you about $7-10 less. As I mentioned , despite the smaller size, it was quite filling for 1 person.
