We had the opportunity to visit Wood River Ranch recently, and had a wonderful time. We stayed in one of the "Hawk's Rest" rooms, which was very clean and well kept. In addition, the staff was very welcoming, and made us feel like one of the family.
The ranch itself is located in a beautiful valley, which is teaming with wildlife, such as antelope, elk and even moose, all of which we saw. While at the ranch, we had a lot of relaxing down time, but also did some great hikes as well some fishing. With the Wood River just a short walk across the road, we were able to fish several times, and caught (and released) a number of very nice cutthroat trout.
Since we flew into Cody, we spent some time in town and highly recommend that you set aside at least a half or full day for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. We were pleasantly surprised by both the quality and quantity of western art, historical displays and the firearm collection. It is truly a world class museum.
Since the ranch is also an easy drive from Yellowstone, we took a day trip to the park, did a driving tour, two different hikes, and still had time to stop in Cody for dinner on the way home, and then stop at the Cowboy Bar in Meeteetse for a night cap. The Cowboy Bar was like stepping back in time, and you could really feel the history. I mean really, how often do you get to have a drink in a bar that Butch Cassidy drank in!
In summary, we had a great time at the ranch, and the surrounding area, and would highly recommend that you visit yourself. read more
