After all, we were in Cody, Wyoming, surrounded by all that incredible Wild West history! Unfortunately, this was one of the more disappointing stops on our trip. For such a large and highly promoted attraction, I found the experience surprisingly underwhelming. There seemed to be an awful lot of empty wall space, and I kept waiting for something to really grab my attention. Unfortunately, that moment never came. The dining options were also very limited. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that perhaps it was because we were visiting later in the tourist season, but it was still disappointing for a major attraction. We even attended a live raptor demonstration, which sounded like it would be a highlight. Instead, it felt more like sitting through an educational lecture with a heavy-handed message than watching an engaging wildlife presentation. I certainly appreciate learning about animals and conservation, but there's a way to make education entertaining, and this just missed the mark for me. I understand that this museum probably appeals to serious history enthusiasts, and there's certainly a lot of Western heritage to explore. But as someone who enjoys history, wildlife, and unique experiences, I expected a lot more. Bottom line? Lots of square footage, not nearly enough excitement. I came looking for the Wild West and left feeling like I'd spent a little too much time in the Mild West. Not every stop on a road trip can be a winner, and unfortunately, this one wasn't for me.

The artifacts have little or no restoration to add to the authenticity of the town. There is a small graveyard on the site where the remains of several notable people have been relocated. When we pulled up it looked really small, but when we got up to it, we saw that it was much bigger. Overall it was a great experience. At Old Trail Town, you will find artifacts from the Old West as well as grave sites of several notable Western figures. You will also find original cabins used by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as well as a Wyoming saloon frequented by Cassidy's "Hole-in-the-Wall Gang". Some of my favorites were the log cabin home of "Curley" a Crow Indian army scout who helped guide Lt Col. George A. Custer and the U.S. 7th Cavalry to the battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876, and the old schoolhouse.

We watched an old movie that gave insight on what had taken place all those many years ago. Much information is contained in the Center and, at a cost of just $7 (senior), you can learn a great deal through murals, short movies, as well as talking to the staff. The fee was reasonable, and the museum took us about 20 minutes total. The building and exhibits were top notch, and brand new. While the exhibits were not very big, they were educational and gave you information about the big horn basin area. They have an area dedicated to paleontology and one to archeology. I enjoyed getting to do something educational while needing a break, instead of just shopping or doing something mindless. If you are passing through this area, I'd take the time to stop and support this local museum.

The museum had tons of items that shows what a general store, a newspaper office, a bank, a blacksmith shop, and many other examples of life in the late 1800s. The building is very deceiving because it has a full basement. It took is over 2 hours to go through the entire museum. We were all impressed with the amount of items on loan from local residents. It is obvious that the community is very supportive of the museum. They have a large amount of the museum dedicated to the armed forces and the local contributions of individuals and families.

The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The food was like you were eating at a high end restaurant every night. Our guide had grown up in the area and was very knowledgeable about where the elk would be moving and where we needed to be. We shared a lot of laughs with him but when it came time to hunt, it got very serious. Like any elk hunt, there was plenty of walking at some altitude so come in the best shape that you can. The hard work paid off as we both tagged out on the second day. Once we got the elk off the mountain and in the cooler, the guys helped us pick out a processor to take them to. I would highly recommend Wood River to anyone that is looking for a Western elk hunt and wants to be treated like their trip really matters to the outfitter.

In addition, the staff was very welcoming, and made us feel like one of the family. The ranch itself is located in a beautiful valley, which is teaming with wildlife, such as antelope, elk and even moose, all of which we saw. While at the ranch, we had a lot of relaxing down time, but also did some great hikes as well some fishing. With the Wood River just a short walk across the road, we were able to fish several times, and caught (and released) a number of very nice cutthroat trout. Since we flew into Cody, we spent some time in town and highly recommend that you set aside at least a half or full day for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. We were pleasantly surprised by both the quality and quantity of western art, historical displays and the firearm collection. It is truly a world class museum. Since the ranch is also an easy drive from Yellowstone, we took a day trip to the park, did a driving tour, two different hikes, and still had time to stop in Cody for dinner on the way home, and then stop at the Cowboy Bar in Meeteetse for a night cap. The Cowboy Bar was like stepping back in time, and you could really feel the history. I mean really, how often do you get to have a drink in a bar that Butch Cassidy drank in! In summary, we had a great time at the ranch, and the surrounding area, and would highly recommend that you visit yourself.

We expected to see a bunch of tanks. But OMG - this place has incredible displays. It's not just a bunch of tanks and armor, it's full sets with animated backgrounds and sounds. Bombers flying overhead with bombs blasting. Not over the top PTSD triggering scenes, but enough to seed your imagination so you can better understand what the men and these machines went through. In most if not all respects this museum is better than the Smithsonian. Yes, it's a lot of armor, but there are all kinds of it, many from different countries, and even a few aircraft. Also, don't miss the vault full of every type of rifle you can imagine - including the one that shot the first bullet of the Revolutionary war. We stopped here on a whim. Our next stop will be planned. Don't miss this place.

I am deducting one star off of my review for a very specific reason. Before entering the Holocaust section, there is a trigger warning, letting viewers know there are images that some may find disturbing. There is no such warning before entering the Vietnam section. This area of the museum is very realistic with dim lighting, bamboo shoots, and literal "Charlie in the trees", waiting to be illuminated and startle you. Many Vietnam veterans, like my father, are suffering from PTSD. Knowing how many of them will probably visit this museum, there needs to be some sort of warning before entering this area!
