My recent week at the L&B was, without a doubt, one of the best vacations I've ever spent. Horseback riding, hiking, fly fishing - the ranch has it all. I had never been on a horse before my trip to Wyoming, and the wranglers made it so easy that, by Day 2, I was forgetting I had never ridden before. And the rides themselves were spectacular. We rode every morning, for about 2-3 hours, and on two other days there was the option to go on a longer ride (ranging from 6-7 hours). Regardless of which option I chose, the experiences were uniformly spectacular. The rides went through a range of countryside, including open meadows, foothills, scrubby flatlands, and along lakes and rivers. The breadth of the scenery was spectacular.
The L&B also does a great job of offering additional activities each day, including hiking and fly fishing. You can do these activities solo or with a guide provided by the ranch. As with riding, I'd never been fly fishing before and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon I spent learning the sport with a ranch guide and some of the other guests. I also went on a great afternoon hike near Lake Louise. The food was fantastic, and far exceeded my expectations. There was a full-time chef on-site, as well as a pastry chef, and the results were outstanding. We ate like kings every day.
In addition to the activities and scenery, the ranch provides ample opportunities for getting to know the other guests. During my week there, the guests were a mix of families, friends, and singles, and, by week's end, we all felt we'd known each other much longer than one week. There are evening happy hours on the lodge deck, group meals, campfires, and just general opportunities to sit and talk with one another; the ranch even arranged for a number of the guests to go to a square dance one evening in the nearby town. That said, there was also plenty of time to just hang on by myself, whether reading a book on my cabin's front porch or going for a walk through the beautiful countryside. Overall, the ranch came to feel like a small village of close neighbors and friends, which only added to the experience.
All of this happens because the owners, Jason and Deb Halmay, along with their wonderful daughters, think of everything and make each guest feel like a long-time friend who has returned for a visit. They make running a ranch look effortless, and the guests were all the better for it. read more
