Try out the calamari. Some of you may order a second round to make it your entire meal. My eyes and stomach immediately lock to calamari whenever I see it on the menu of any place. The calamari were crispy and came out hot and throwing a little something different since this place is a fusion of Mexican/Chinese it came with gyoza dipping sauce. The menu is filled with options that combine two different styles but if you are not feeling adventitious you can get the standard. For the main course I went with the Szechuan Surf & Turf Burrito. Yooooooo.......... I was like who... no what ..... why .... How did someone come up with this. It is like when you visit somewhere and have good food but you know you are visiting and will not have it again until you return. Hopefully the place is still open. So much flavor packed up and rolled by some angel's hands back in that kitchen. No hunting for shrimp as with some places when they tell there is shrimp in the selection. I am so glad we decided to eat there because you can tell this is the type of meal where eating it hot is the only way to do it justice. I thoroughly enjoyed my Beef Bulgogi Burrito which was served with tortilla chips vs. my hubby who specified extra spicy Szechuan surf and tuft burrito. The restaurant itself has outdoor and indoor seating, since it is overlooking the street, we opted to sit inside where we were greeted with a suprisingly spacious interior with a bar. The moment we walked in, the service was impeccable. Our server was attentive and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu, guiding us through all the offerings we had questions about. The restaurant was not very busy so we were seated very quickly. We were really impressed by the vast amount of menu offerings so we opted to try a couple of items including the Loco wings, Crispy Bao, Sezchuan beef tacos and of course a side of fries. We started with the loco wings drizzled in their loco sauce...seriously, they were a game-changer! The server described the sauce as a mix of wet and dry seasoning, I would describe it as absolutely delicious. It was very savory, with a hint of citrus and punch of smokiness, I haven't had anything like it and I'm already dreaming about when I can have it again. It was definitely our favorite of the evening. The Tacos and Bao were also amazing. The Bao especially was a unique twist on typical Bao offerings with it being fried which was a deviation from the typical soft bao buns I am used to. It felt really innovative and added a delightful crunch to the soft filling. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these options. The fries were topped with "Mexinese" seasoning which made them stand out from your normal fry offerings and felt like a great side. We ended the meal with their fried tequila cake...yes I said fried tequila cake! It was a fried angel food cake that was soaked in tequila and it was amazing. I think the chunjang fish tacos might have lacked a bit in flavor, but the fatty fajita bao was a really unique spin on what I normally expect with a bao dish. Wong Gonzales is a nice lunch and happy hour spot. They're able to accommodate larger parties. I've had a few different things on the menu and everything has been pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of fusion dishes as I usually find myself wanting just one specific cuisine but a lot of the dishes work. They have bento boxes during lunch that are a good deal. Their happy hour is 4-6pm every day including margaritas, cocktails, wine, and beer. They can be a little busy and understaffed so wait times can be longer. The high ceilings are really nice as I noticed the place is well ventilated and you don't leave smelling like the restaurant. I will say between here and their sister restaurant in Short Pump, I do prefer the latter. read more

I absolutely love fusion cuisines and Wong Gonzalez does an amazing job of blending Mexican and Asian dishes. I ordered a little bit of a sampler and really enjoyed just about everything I got. My main entrée was the beef Bulgogi burrito and it was one of the best burritos I've ever had. The protein was nice and juicy was not overwhelmed by vegetables and had a nice rice in it as well. It was really enough for two meals really a red fantastic dish . The chips that they were served with seemed homemade and had a nice seasoning on them. That was nice for a change of pace. I also got the bow buns and like them as well, though I would've preferred a steamed bun as opposed to what seemed like a grilled bun. The fried rice was really good as well. I really liked the addition of the fried shallots in with the rice and other ingredients you'd find in a fried rice dish. The shallots had a nice bit of crunch to the fried rice that I enjoyed. On top of all the service was fantastic. The manager took my order right away offered me a seat at the bar got me a glass of water to drink while I waited for my food and had my carryout order in my hands in less than 10 minutes incredibly efficient process delivering really good food. Happy experience! My Uber driver recommended this spot - here for a work trip - and it was a success. The restaurant is on a cute little street, walking distance from my downtown hotel. The restaurant is a long room with a bar, as well as booths, and an upstairs area that can be booked for private events. I sat at the bar as I came by myself, and enjoyed a cocktail, appetizer and meal. The drink was a variation of a cosmo, and it was sweet and delicious. I ordered the bao buns and then the Mongolian Chicken Pot. The bartender recommended pairing with the fried rice, which is a slight up charge, though seemed worth it. If I came back, I'd order the main dish again - with the fried rice - and while I enjoyed the app and drink, I'd probably choose others just to experience more of the menu. He asked if I had any questions, which I did. I ordered: Guacamole & chips - although I asked was it at all spicy and he said no, something is definitely spicy in the guacamole. Ugh! You only get a small scoop of guac and a plate full of chips. Besides the hint of spice, it's missing salt/garlic salt and there was none on the table to add myself. That being said, it was bland. Fish tacos - spicy. I'm not a spicy person. I always ask if food is spicy and only order it if I'm told no. I understand spice tolerance is different depending on the person but if you say no, then that means no, no don't mean a little or no don't mean not to me no means no. Besides that, the tacos were good. Tacos were more spicy than the guacamole. Sweet tea - it was ok I probably won't be back but mainly because I don't want spicy food. I ended up ordering the beef buligi banh mi($14) and Bulgogi burrito($14).The beef on the bahn mi was not sauced evenly, most of it had no flavor till the end. Bread was way too hard and quite different from a typical banh mi. I normally like cheese, but it did not blend well with this sandwich. Bulgogi burrito was also a bit bland and lacked flavor. Beef was not evenly covered in sauce and felt dry in most spots. It was mainly just beef and white rice no other toppings inside. A very disappointing burrito. WONGarita ($10) was a typical margarita, nothing special. Overall I was really let down, the food was nowhere near the amount of flavor I thought it would have. Mexican Japanese fusion spot in the city. It's an excellent choice for early dinner before seeing a show at the dominion energy center. It's very reasonably priced and the food is delicious. I got the taco flight and had a hard time picking a favorite because they were all so tasty. My partner got the surf and turf burrito and we both would order it again. It was big enough to take one half home for later. The also shared the chip trio appetizer to start which is just a must at any restaurant. I really wanted to love this place, but a few things just fell short for me. I'll start with the positives, the phenomenal staff. They were fast, attentive, and friendly. I appreciated the experience a ton! The food is so creative and I loved perusing the menu. We went with a few different tacos and the dip sampler. The Malay salsa is a cool flavor, and probably my favorite thing, though the queso had an interesting consistency I do not often seek out. As for the tacos, the meat itself (beef tacos and shrimp) was cooked perfectly and very tender. However, all tacos seemed to have a VERY sweet sauce inside, which made it really hard to enjoy the flavor of the meat. While Wong Gonzalez suffers from generic and inexplicable decor and an overly capacious dining room, its food was solid. Drinks were on the strong side. I got the vegan ramen, which was oddly served on a plate rather than a bowl--it wasn't broth based, so I'm not sure why it was called a ramen. Regardless, it was fresh and good. My biggest knock against it is they tried to make it Mexican-infused by adding shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes in a pile on the side. There was no need for that. Our waiter was excellent. Wing Gonzalez is such an original restaurant because it combines both South East Asian and Mexican flavors into its menu items. There are many tasty appetizers such as Wong's Guacamole, Loco Wings, Fiesta Bites, and Nachos fries. Additionally, you cannot go wrong with any of the entrees such as their burritos l, Bahn Mi, salads, rice dishes, and noodle bowls. My personal favorite is the Gonzi's Stir Fry Skillet with chicken. I love it's sweet and spicy flavors! If you have a sweet tooth, like me, you'd me remiss to not try any of Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches that they offer. The banana pudding flavor is amazing! The restaurant also has lots of wine and beer options if you're looking to have a night out with a few drinks. It's located super close to Dominion Energy Center, so Wong Gonzalez is a great spot for dining before or after a show. Fusion places are pretty common these days, and this one does Mexican-Asian fusion quite well. I ordered the pork baos, skillet stir fry, and the fried cheesecake eggrolls. The baos had tasty pork and some nice fixings in them, but I was most impressed with the crispy toasted bun/taco shell. The skillet stir fry had Asian tastes such as the oyster sauce and chili peppers. I also enjoyed the addition of pineapple, which gave the dish a really tropical flavor. Well-cooked chicken and veggies. And it came on an iron skillet, with a side of "Wong" white rice. The fried cheesecake eggrolls surprised me. I was thinking the dish would be too heavy and greasy, like some crab rangoons, but it was more light and fruity, much like a crepe with fruit dressing. The passion fruit sauce was a great complement to the cheesecake eggrolls. I was very intrigued by Wong Gonzalez and was excited to try it. Sadly, our visit was a "one and done". First, service was friendly, but our waitress was also tending bar and had too much on her hands. The bar is very popular so management should plan accordingly. Second, the table was sticky, like the floors of bars I frequented in college. Ewwwww. Now for food. Bahn mi appetizer- delicious, but dry. We all agreed it needed a sauce. Own goal. Gyoza - dumplings were tender with nice filling, but were too dark on the bottom. The dipping sauce had a soapy taste. Fiesta bites - good, tender chicken nuggets. Sauce was also a bit soapy. Wings - with Foo sauce. The wings were large and well cooked, but seasoning and sauce were too cumin-heavy. Tacos - all agreed the pork was delicious; the rest were just OK. Shrimp bowl - large tender shrimp and veggies, but the sauce was cloyingly sweet so the dish went largely uneaten. The Wong rice portion was huge, and I it was appropriately sticky. I'm sure this place does OK because of the location and great bar scene, but if you are looking for good food, look elsewhere. read more

They had an upstairs area where they seated us. Steven was our server and he did an amazing job with taking orders, checking on us and splitting the checks. The other employees we came in to contact with were nice as well, the restaurant was clean and very spacious. The food and beverage was so so. For my drink I had the Blueberry Vodka lemonade which consisted of Smirnoff blueberry vodka, fresh blueberry, fresh lemon, simple syrup. The drink could have been a little smoother. For my meal I went with the fiesta bites which is Tempura battered chicken bites wok fried, with cilantro, jalapeño, onion & red pepper. I modified and asked for none of the toppings. The chicken was bland and the sauce that accompanied the bites tasted bitter. I also ordered nacho fries. The nacho fries were topped with chorizo, jack cheese, lettuce, pico, pineapple mango salsa, cilantro, red onion, crispy jalapeños & chipotle ranch. I asked for the pico on the side and no jalapeños. I had more lettuce than I did fried and for that reason alone it was hard to enjoy my nacho fries. The food was subpar but the customer service was great. I went here this evening with some colleagues. It was about an hour wait time, but at least we were able to get some shopping done at Short Pump while waiting. I got their seasonal peppermint espresso which was okay, it was small but decently strong. I wish the drink was sweeter & had more flavor but it was a fun idea.
