I was very tired tonight but had RSVPed for this LADWP meeting in Little Tokyo. I found parking on…read morethe street, wondered what I was getting myself into, walked up the long staircase, and knocked on a mysterious door. A friendly woman, Alana, answered and welcomed me in to a room full of warmth, safety and smiling faces. We started the meeting by chatting about our writing experiences. Our thoughts and feelings about the subject. We then moved on to each person going to the microphone to read the "homework" (which I quickly did while there as I was a "drop in"). It was a top 10 list. It didn't have to be funny, just 10 things. It was fascinating to see what others wrote about. After each we would discuss what we liked and how it made us feel. Alana gave positive feed-back and if you were comfortable some constructive criticism. Next we each read a Haiku and then did a mash up at the very end, making a new and surprisingly poignant collaborative haiku based on what we had already written. We ended by discussing the exercise and again everyone giving feed-back. This all was a surprising burst of creativity that I have been longing for for a while. My creative meter was running dry today and I left with a full, overflowing tank! Safe environment. Collaborative and individualistic. Teacher who really has a 6th sense and gift for drawing out confidence and creativity in others. And a chance to explore different perspectives. I highly recommend this class to anyone needing to break out of the hum drum of everyday L.A. life and reconnect with their creative side. I'm looking forward to returning.

Thank goodness I found someone because I was tired of hearing the renter across from me snoring all the damn time. He even had the nerve to buy gifts for me because he was embarrassed about him being drunk and passing out everywhere. Pretty much trying to buy me with gifts so I wouldn't complain on him for living there. Yeah I said it! Him and his friend who I thought were filmmakers ( so they said) were the most disruptive people I have ever met. I would be there late and all I hear is fighting from them... Bottles of alcohol and smelling of weed in the kitchen or hallway. People were complaining about the smell of the paint I was using. But all I could really do were open the limited amount of windows. Poor ventilation, nosy, rude tenants. I've had food stolen from me several times and problem never got any better. Restroom and kitchen were always filthy. So many negative experiences I won't even begin to list them. The only good part was dealing with Kelly. Other than that the owner is just eager to fill up space in a poorly maintained building. Never personally apologized about the POLICE RAID either!! One of the artists was pregnant and cops were pointing a gun at her!! All over a mistake the office made downstairs over some fraudulent document. Which for some reason required more than 10 cops going through our office spaces and having us lined up against a wall! F that! I hated my experience. I spoke with some artists that use to rent from the space during my time there and even they didn't want to continue because of harassment and constant accusations from the owner. If you are interested in lack of privacy, within a stale, lifeless building be my guest. Its easier to get positive reviews than honest ones, and that's all I was trying to do .

They do a great job of working with the next generation to get their minds working on another level. We were able to tour the various studios and speak to the staff about their roles. Everyone is in this for the right reasons. They are passionate about helping making the next generation great. The event was also great. There were two stages for music and multiple bars. Four food trucks were available too. Take some time to check out this campus and the programs they make available. It is a great cause.

Rosenthal Theatre is on the Inner-City Arts Campus south of Little Tōkyō. It's an oasis of culture…read morein the middle of small warehouses and small manufacturing shops. Rosenthal Theatre is a large, flat space with no raised stage. Bleacher seating on the first floor against all the four walls. Shallow mezanine seating looks down on the performance space below. Since it is sort of like a theatre in the round with no front, back, sides, I unfortunately sat where the actors mostly faced away from me so I couldn't always see their faces during much of the performance. With such a huge space that swallows up sound and with poor acoustics and not all their voices being projected and enunciated clearly, it was a slog trying to catch every word. Also coming in from the bright May afternoon sun and not being used to the dark lit theatre, going up the stygian stairs was awkward. Hero Theater presented "Tea" by Velina Hasu Houston, directed by Rebecca Wear. It's a story about Japanese women marrying American soldiers in occupied Japan right after World War II and living in their husbands' state of Kansas. They go through many hardships trying to assimilate living in an alien land facing anti-Asian discrimination. It reminds me of "The Women" directed by George Cukor in that the husbands that they talk about never appear on stage. A little bit of Mort Crowley's bitchy "Boys in the Band" where they lose their polite façades and tell each other their true inner feelings, but this time there is a less bitter, sweet ending. Nice production where perhaps a little knowledge of Japanese American culture & heritage does help understand some of the culture based humour & asides. 80 minutes went by quickly. 4- stars...If only the acoustics were better.

I needed a place to stay in town for a night while my apartment was dealing with construction, and…read moresince I've considered becoming a member of the Los Angeles Athletic Club, I figured this was a pretty good way to test-drive the place. The best part of staying at the hotel is that you get full access to the club, including the gym, pool, locker rooms, spa, sauna, and Jacuzzi. I used the locker room, sauna, and Jacuzzi and really enjoyed all of it. Very nice facilities and definitely the part of the experience that makes staying here different from a normal hotel. The locker room was a little confusing as a first-timer. I had no idea where I was supposed to get a locker or exactly how everything worked, and I happened to arrive at a very busy time. There seemed to be some assumed etiquette that everyone else already understood. A 30-second explanation at hotel check-in would go a long way. The hotel room itself was incredibly clean. Like, noticeably clean. Honestly cleaner than a lot of Marriott properties I've stayed at recently. Beyond that, though, the room is pretty no-frills. Mine was right near the elevator, so it was noisy, and despite being inside this grand historic athletic club, the actual hotel room experience somehow gives a little bit of motel energy. Clean motel energy, but still. Both the hotel staff and restaurant staff were very nice throughout my stay. For dinner I went to Invention, the club's lounge-style restaurant. Really nice atmosphere and a good place to hang out without having to leave the building. I ordered the steak frites and asparagus, plus a cocktail called Respect Your Elders, made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, St-Germain, Amaro Montenegro, and Angostura. Pretty good. Basically what would happen if an Old Fashioned developed a sweeter, slightly more herbal personality. I also had a Sangiovese, which really hit the spot after my recent trip to Italy. And then pecan pie for dessert. Yum. No notes. The steak came out a little more cooked than I would have preferred, but everything was very flavorful. For dinner entertainment, I happened to be sitting next to a couple on what appeared to be an exceptionally awkward first date. No reservation required for that show. The next morning I went to Famous Players coffee shop for breakfast. I had the California breakfast with eggs, avocado, and bacon, plus a latte. Solid breakfast, and more importantly, it was a nice place to wake up, open the laptop, and get some work done over coffee. I also appreciated the photos of USC football players on the walls. Fight On! Overall, I'm glad I stayed here. As a pure hotel, I probably wouldn't go out of my way for the rooms alone. But as a hotel attached to a historic athletic club where you can work out, swim, sauna, soak in the Jacuzzi, eat, drink, get breakfast, and basically spend your entire stay without leaving the building, it's a pretty unique experience. And as someone who had been considering membership, staying overnight was actually a great way to see what the club is really like.

LAAC has changed a lot since my last review from 10 years ago. It continues to have the best pool…read morewith advanced filtration system that does not make me feel like a chlorine tablet after swimming. But it now caters to a younger crowd and has substantial co-working space. I've certain found more members using the facilities but also discovered quite a bit of new programmings like the Pilates classes, mahjong club, live jazz performances and movie nights. I was not really sure about the change at the beginning but I am now fully embracing the new LAAC. Many of the staff and members have been here for a long time and it is nice to be greeted by familiar faces when coming to the club. The restaurants are pretty decent. Love to top my salad with a nice piece of salmon after workout at the Famous Players or have a tasty glass of scotch while enjoying the live jazz performance at the Invention. The sports bar Duke's has great happy hours and fun monthly evening karaoke or chess club meetings. The only thing I complain about is the need for shock absorbance and insulation of the noise or moving the weight station. The northwest corner of the Famous Players near Olive Street shakes every time the weightlifters drop their weights, which is very annoying and distracting for the diners. Feel like the ceiling or floor is going to drop out. No joke. For now, I would sit as far away from the northwest corner as I possibly can. But hope the club would look into it. I have been trying to sign up for the monthly wine tasting but they are always full. Maybe consider having the event more frequently or scale up? Regardless, I am still exploring all the new offerings at the club and really pleased with the Pilates classes and the live music performances. Although I am apprehensive when I first see the co-working space and the influx of new members, I now appreciate the additional events and classes that come with the new members and hope the club continues to do well and do better as I am here to stay.
