My law firm recently had our holiday party at the Jonathan Club. For regular schmucks like myself, the Jonathan Club is a private members only club with two locations - Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles. Membership prices are too rich for my blood, so this was most likely the only chance I would ever come here as you have to know a member. Naturally, lawyers have money to spend so our firm has some members. The DTLA location has very nice if dated grounds. Our party was on the rooftop so we got some good views of downtown as we chowed down and drank the afternoon away. Their bar on the second floor was where the real party was at. All the servers had good pours and were friendly. If you get the chance to visit the Jonathan Club, don't hesitate to jump at the chance! read more

Old world charm at its best! This club is a nice piece of Los Angeles city history. It's elegant and graceful. It is an exclusive club so you have to be a member or invited by members to use the club. The facilities are a bit old, or be nicely maintained. They've updated the rooms and bathrooms nicely so no worries for modern comfort. I think their facilities, for example, nice banquet, halls, and rooms, would be great for private events. However, for their price point, I think there are many modern hotels in this area, for example, the Intercontinental, that would be better value for your money. read more

Attended an evening charity event at the Jonathan Club. The club is located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles and has been around for many decades. The building's history coupled with its architecture make it a true sight to see. The staff were absolutely amazing! Extremely friendly, helpful and professional. Our event, which included dinner, was held on the rooftop of the club. There were about 350 guests and an army of hardworking staff, which executed dinner flawlessly! Their timing and efficiency was superb! The dinner, which began with a fresh beat and fig salad, flowed by a salmon fillet , mashed potatoes and vegetables were all really good. Normally, preparing a meal for that many people yields a so-so or mediocre meal. Not here! The food was hot and the salmon was cooked perfectly!! Dessert was your choice of a chocolate gnash cake or vanilla bread pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I opted for the bread pudding, which left me wanting more! It was amazing!!!! All in all, it was a wonderful experience. If you are ever afforded the opportunity to visit the Jonathan Club, I would highly recommend that you go! read more

Had a lovely work celebration lunch here with someone who is a member! Parking was pretty easy, since there's a valet and from there, it's easy to enter the club. A the restaurant, I ordered the sand dabs -- I hadn't heard of this fish before, let alone eaten it, so this was a new experience for me! I ordered it because everyone had talked about how it was the Club's signature dish. Once I heard that, I needed to try it. I absolutely loved it and thought the dish was so delicious - from the sauce, to the fish and the mashed potatoes. For dessert, I had the pavlova and it was small, but mighty! It was amazing. A historic venue standing preserved in time. The ceilings were gorgeous and made me feel I could be in a museum. This is walking I distance from the metro and the rooftop has a nice view. I had a lovely dinner on the rooftop! A beautiful atmosphere paired with the best service. I ordered the caesar salad and Ora king salmon with chimichurri. Our table shared the mac and cheese gnocchi, vegetables, and spinach. First of all, the caesar was incredible and the salmon was even better. Perfect flavors and the salmon was cooked to perfection. It had a nice sear on the bottom but the fish itself was moist and tender. The gnocchi was also delicious and the veggies were freshly harvested from their garden. For dessert, I was intrigued by the piña colada pavlova and it was an interesting dessert. Not too sweet but very tasty. Just a spectacular experience overall. read more

Came here for a work event and the cocktail hour and dinner was well-done. It's a good spot for business meetings. Valet parking was available. Street parking would be near impossible. The cocktail hour that preceded the event took place with a live pianist in an opulent room with dark wood. The fried chicken sandwiches were the best h'ordeurve, while the shrimp was my least favorite (it was a bit over cooked). For the three course meal, we had the salad (a bit bitter), steak and salmon (steak was nicely cooked, salmon was a tad under cooked but still nice), and New York style cheesecake. Lots of different rooms in the club, and didn't really get a chance to explore completely, but seemed like there was a vibe for each room. What a disappointing venue. It's old and incredibly dingy and in need of a major renovation. Went to an event and we were told we could go to the rooftop so the men could smoke cigars. A few minutes later an obnoxious and rude employee came out and told everyone to leave. The food was average, the floors are cracked, carpets stained and not impressive at all!! My boss is a member of the Jonathan Club, so I've been fortunate to attend a few events here over the years. The JC is an exclusive, private social club that was founded in 1895. It has been ranked as one of the top clubs in the world by Platinum Clubs of America. There are two locations - The Town Club and the Beach Club, which is located on a private stretch of beach in Santa Monica. The Town Club was established first and is in a twelve-story building in the heart off Downtown Los Angeles. I really like the wood-paneled interiors and the European Renaissance inspired décor and original 20th century artwork contribute to the club's old school charm. It's a great place to host an event and is quite popular for weddings. In fact, my boss had his here. Plus, they have overnight rooms that your out-of-town guests (or bride & groom) can rent. In addition to special event rooms, there is a Rooftop Terrace that is perfect for summer dining, two in door dining areas, a large gym, spa, a gift shop, and a library that is stunning and full of history. I've had lunch in the Grill Room a number of times, and we hosted a wine mixer here for our clients. Each time the service was spectacular, and the food was exceptionally good. Their wine list is superb, and they have excellent cocktails too. Guests are treated with the same respect as members. While formal attire is preferred, business casual is acceptable. Jeans are not allowed, and neither is talking on your cell phone. There is valet parking on site and even a gas pump for members. Being a member here has many perks - there is some type of event every night of the week and special dinners/functions throughout the year. (I enjoy looking through the JC's monthly newsletter to see photos from these events.) To become a member you need to be sponsored by an existing member, go through a screening process, and then be voted in. If you are fortunate to know someone that is a member you should tag along as their guest for the experience. read more

What an amazing place this was. I attended a preceptor appreciation reception hosted by USC school of pharmacy. From the second we entered the parking, everyone was so kind and professional (this is for the staff of Jonathan Club). Great atmosphere, very beautifully decorated, amazing food and great staff. Unfortunately I was not able to take pictures of the food tables but they were very tasty. They had a dessert table and their creme brulee was heavenly and so rich and creamy. They also offered tea, coffee and hot chocolate. All in all, it was a great experience. read more

I arrived early afternoon on a Saturday for a private event here. There appears to be a "front desk" by valet so I waited there for some help on where to go. I waited and waited and no one ever came by. Valet was no where in sight either to ask so I decided to just venture more inside the club. I ran into the front desk oddly located in the middle of the club. I told the woman I had been waiting at the front desk and no one ever showed up when she rather snobbishly said, "well that isn't our front desk" and "members know where to go". I told her I was here for an event and others would be arriving and maybe as lost as I was and she reinforced that members know and valet should have told me. Well, they didn't! Of course there is no signage and they should have known that non-members were coming there for an event and to be prepared to greet them in a more kind and friendlier manner. I also worked with the main event manager and he wasn't at all friendly and also had a very snobbish and cold vibe about him. He was very standoffish. I like the venue because of its history but the staff is not friendly. I've experienced a more helpful and polite staff at so many other places and even private clubs like the California Club (exceptional staff), located one block away from the Jonathan Club. read more

Beautiful venue for my friends wedding that we attended. Though it's a bit creepy that it's flooded with old white men photos on every floor, kind of like the haunted houses where the eyes follow you... kinda gave me that feeling. The ceremony was beautiful, the art work is a bit dated and seems like a young child drew some of them but ornate enough that not many flowers or decor was needed to fill the place out. The rooftop was beautiful, their lamb chop legs looked a bit under cooked but the other hordeurves were tasty. The reception was fun & the bathrooms were clean. Okay, maybe for a large-scale institutional graduation dinner, the number of choices that can handle such a crowd may be limited. And in that sense, the JC with its old-fashioned and traditional understanding of noblesse is an appropriate venue for a festive environment (4 stars). And after all, it is on those occasions really about celebrating the wonderful graduates than worshipping any Chef. On a 1:1 food and service comparison though with smaller-scale restaurants, JC cannot compare (2-3 stars). Among a limited number of appetizers, there were some lamb chops that were extremely tender. But the rest of the food, particularly the beef choice was of mediocre quality - the opposite of tender. The arrangements were without love, without creativity, and without elegance. The service was limited to pure manpower for carrying in and out, but lacked any finesse. Coffee was a shadow (or fifth run-through) of the original beverage with the same name. As an East Coaster who loves the grand old clubhouses of NYC and London, I feel right at home at the Jonathan Club. Its wood-paneled interiors are elegant and beautiful, the staff is friendly and helpful, and its members are connected and philanthropic. The beautiful swimming pool is noteworthy -- as well as the club's history. Can you believe UCLA, the LA Times, and the LA Philharmonic have their beginnings at the Jonathan Club? I especially like its location downtown, which is close to many of LA's business centers and a burgeoning downtown scene. (It's less "plastic" than Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Perhaps I like downtown because it reminds me of New York?) Plus, if I'm ever jonesing to hang out at the beach, I only need to go to the Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica. read more

Absolutely amazing. I never knew that such an establishment existed in the middle of DTLA. First off, there is a business casual dress code that is strictly enforced so come dressed nicely! I had the pleasure of experiencing the rooftop steakhouse (which is only open during the summer) and it was an amazing experience. Being above the bustling streets of DTLA and enjoying the views of the sky and the buildings all while eating a beautifully prepared meal... what more can a girl ask for? We started off with the foie gras which just melted in my mouth... like butter. Eating it with the berries that were placed on the side enhanced the taste. For the main, we shared the ribeye and the branzino. The ribeye was cooked to a perfect medium rare topped with asparagus and mushrooms. The branzino came out with the skin crisp and the meat tender and juicy. The service was great also. They were attentive, helpful, and knowledgeable of the menu. If you have the opportunity to dine here, definitely do. (You do need to be invited by a JC member.) read more

I've been here several times with friends who are members and it's fantastic. The service is always friendly and attentive, the food is delicious and they have a wonderful wine selection. I loved chatting with their sommelier for a few minutes. It's a great place for a business meeting, a nice dinner or enjoying a game at the bar. I am writing a review based on my impressions of the venue, food, and service for a particular event. I attended a breakfast seminar. Hot breakfast included grapefruit and orange juices, coffee and tea, sausages and potatoes, oatmeal with real fruit compote, and a variety of sweet buns, rolls and croissants. Breakfast was tasty and high-quality. Servers were on hand to take away plates and cutlery. Each table had a bowl of arranged roses, mints, and a pitcher of fresh water. Went here a few times for various event. Most of the event serve wine, small bite appetizer, cookies, coffee and dessert. Food was ok typical nothing special. Only the decoration and the building is special at this place in my opinion. Overall, the atmosphere is good for event, very elegant but not sure if it consider professional since the place is kinda dark, need more lights. Although I did had a few event here for work. They won't let you wear shorts in their parking garage lobby, but they put up with bugs and roaches in the rooms. No cell phone use in the lobby. There are three booths close to the entrance where you can use cell phone and internet. I had a meeting here this morning with a colleague who's a member here. Receptionist said that she would inform me when my colleague arrived. She never did so he ended up waiting for me in the lobby while I was in the booth. I liked that the building is so well maintained considering it's been here forever. We went to the restaurant on the 2nd floor. Service was slow. The waitstaff served us coffee and never returned. It's a bit pretentious, I expected outstanding service for a private club. Service isn't up to par even for a regular establishment. read more

This place is OLD SCHOOL, which is great. It's a club, you must belong and you can't just join, you must be recommended by a member and then accepted by the board! Men must wear suits and women must wear a suit or dress. Don't try to buck the dress code, it's part of the allure here. If you don't like the rules then don't come (not that you can just waltz in). I appreciate that they have their values and stick with them. We have a friend who is a member so we were able to stay here for 2 nights, we had a trade show and it was nice to stay away from everyone. No tipping, I felt like I was taken back in time. If you have the chance to come here, dress up, pretend like it's 1960 (when they always dressed nice) and have fun. read more

Anyways, the service, food an ambience has always been excellent. I was recently here for a reception for the EU Ambassador to the US. This place is nicer (fancier) than the Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica. I've been here for a formal dinner and it's a traditional style. I prefer the more modern feel of the beach club. Plus, it's BY THE BEACH. It's an amazing building though, and the food is excellent. They have buffet night on Thursdays, and what's not to love about that. One time I went to the USC/UCLA football game after party here, and it was really fun, too. I got to finally try their CHILI and it is BOMB DIGGITY. Can't usually get that on a regular meal at the dining room or the buffet. Oh there is one advantage that this place has over the other location. This location has HOTEL ROOMs for guests. This place was okay. Given the history, and the aura I definitely had higher expectations, but if I'm being honest it didn't live up to the hype. I heard a lot of the staff gave my friends a hard time due to the dress code violations but they never said anything to me so that was fine. I had more of an issue with the mosquitoes, moths, and other bugs I (and others in my party) consistently found in and around our rooms the whole trip. However, to their credit, the gym/locker rooms were absolutely amazing (fully stocked utilities for the bathroom, sauna, basketball court, full free wights system, cycling rooms, and rock climbing wall, etc.) almost made up for all the other low points of the stay. Also have to give them bonus points since one of my buddies was able to bag one of the employees following the wedding we were in town for, so they get an A for accommodation. Lovely, lovely, lovely place to host a wedding reception! Honestly, the entire place is just an awe and inspiring location. This location features private valet parking, traditional steakhouse house like ambiance, and wonderful food. There are 3 stories including a large dance floor, a main hall for hosting the ceremonies and speeches, and finally a reception hall for mingling. Overall, I had a wonderful time at my best friend's wedding. Along the reception all, there are portraits of past US presidents, famous actors such as Clint Eastwood, and other famous figures. The location is extremely spacious and could easily host a 200+ people party. I highly recommend your hosting the wedding here and don't forget to invite your recommender ;)! read more

When you know someone that knows someone...perks! My lovely person and I decided to make an overnight trip by staying in DTLA and also catching the LA Kings! Go Kings! Now I can't speak for how the reservation were made but I can speak from the moment I pulled into the valet.... The valet was easy to find if you kind of have an idea how DTLA streets work. Once I pulled in I handed my car over to them and proceeded inside to the lobby area. My person arrived earlier and let me know to just check in and get my room key. Once all that was done, I headed to the room. I must say our room was quite lovely with plenty of amenities. We still had about an hour before the game started so we just relaxed and ordered room service. Later on in the night, from the Staples Center back to Jonathan Club...it was not a long walking distance. If you've never had a chance to stay at a place that is almost like a members only, I would recommend it. It was a very fun quick getaway in a the city I love most. Note- our bed was extremely squeaky....I can't stress enough how annoying that can get... read more

We've been to a couple of these clubs in Downtown LA, and they never disappoint. I wonder if they are all owned by the same person? Anyway, this venue is an incredible place to shoot in. We really love the 1920's vibe with than Downton Abbey feel almost. Very Edwardian in some places. I love how random that can be. In the middle of the craziness of LA there's this place! If you want a glamorous and timeless feel to your wedding, I'd totally recommend this place. It's great one of those one-stop-shop venues. Everything in one place.
